"The Perfect Kiss" is a song by the English alternative dance and rock band New Order. It was recorded at Britannia Row Studios in London and released on 13 May 1985.
    Lyrics
    I stood there beside myself
    Thinking hard about the weather
Then came by a friend of mine
    Suggested we go out together
Then I knew it from the start
This friend of mine would fall apart
Pretending not to see his gun
I said let's go out and have some fun
    I know you know
We believe in a land of love
    I know you know
We believe in a land of love
    I have always thought about
    Staying here and going out
Tonight I should have stayed at home
    Playing with my pleasure zone
He has always been so strange
I'd often thought he was deranged
Pretending not to see his gun
I said let's go out and have some fun
    I know you know
We believe in a land of love
    I know you know
We believe in a land of love
When you are alone at night
You search yourself for all the things
    That you believe are right
If you give it all away
You throw away your only chance to be here today
Then a fight breaks out on your street
You lose another broken heart in a land of meat
My friend, he took his final breath
Now I know the perfect kiss is the kiss of death

Its impressive that New Order has a singer that dont sing, a bassist that thinks he is the guitarist, a drummer that dont know more than one way to play and a synth player that plays a frog solo mid song and still is one of the most amazing bands of all time

I had the opportunity to briefly talk to Hook, and in those few words, I told him that his bassline in this song is the best bassline ever and that I listen to it everyday.
He was very humble by it as he said it was okay, but not his best. He then said something in British slang that I couldn't quite understand because his accent was so thick and it was loud in there. But, he was appreciative of my compliment. Seems like a nice guy. It's so crazy how good this band was. You've got a drummer playing keyboards, a bassist who plays high notes on his bass and switches over to electric drums when needed, the singer also plays guitar and cowbell, and you've got a woman on other keyboards who was never with the band before. Somehow they're all doing this and putting together into one amazing song. Then you have to think that 3 out of 4 of these bandmates recently had their lead singer kill himself just before they were set to embark on a big tour that could have made them huge. They decided to go on, but despite going on, they didn't simply replace the singer. One of their own became the singer, so the new member that joined the band wasn't even replacing him. She was more in the background making sure the electronic stuff was going smoothly.

This song and this video are, in my opinion, a classic example of the fact that, in music and in art all, when you are technically very well prepared and you had in your life strong emotions that you want to convey and share with other people, then you will certainly produce a masterpiece. This may seem a trivial concept, but what matters to me is that New Order managed to transmit those strong emotions to me.

I saw this video on VHS in my early 20's. I rode my bike to another neighboring city and rented the VHS 'Substance' and was in a trance watching the simplicty of this video. Nothing special about it other than musicians practicing this song in a live studio. But it's the simplicity of it that makes it so special.

The way they do this is amazing. The drummer is on keyboards, the bassist is also playing drums, the singer plays guitar and cow bell, and you've got the new member on keyboards making sure it all goes well. Somehow they're all doing all of this stuff and it comes together as a great song.

I'll admit that I haven't delved quite deep enough into New Order to make much of a list of favorite tracks, however, "The Perfect Kiss" and "True Faith" are DEFINITELY among my favorites thus far...
Sadly, "Blue Monday" probably won't make that list, sad as that's the ONLY New Order song that we ever got on the radio here in the U.S....that said, it IS by default the song which exposed me to New Order LOOOOOONG before I even knew there WAS such a band or even knew what the name of "Blue Monday" was. I do like the song, it certainly has nostalgic value...but compared to "True Faith", it just lacks much in the way of depth.
Saying all of that, I DEF find it amazing that a band could put SO MUCH DEPTH into what sounds on surface like just simple 80s pop songs! You listen to a song like "True Faith", that song is about mental illness and drug addiction...yet it sounds every bit as poppy as say "Cars" which is just some guy singing about driving in a car.
These were true musical artists and I'm glad to have finally discovered more than just "Blue Monday" within their hitlist...♥️♥️♥️♥️😁😁😁😁

Back in 1985 this video was doing the rounds in cinemas. I heard this version of the Perfect Kiss for the first time live in Wolverhampton (Low Life Tour) and managed to grab the drumstick that Barney used after they left the stage. Another was more bold and jumped onto the stage and grabbed the song list from Gillian's keyboard. New Order are the soundtrack to my life over a 40 year period - I generally remember when something happened by remembering what single or album they had released.

Btw with the original 12” I don’t mean the substance version, bc the original 12” is about a minute longer than substance edit.
