- Mortal Kombat 2 Annihilation might just be the worst videogame movie ever made! The sequel to the amazing 1995 (we know it was also cheesy) has totally disappointed and nothing has changed as we watch it again years later. Robin Shou and Talisa Soto return at least as Liu Kang and Kitana but it's not enough to save this techno rave of a fighting film!

This movie had a bigger budget than the first movie. I repeat, this Movie Had A Bigger Budget Than The LAST MOVIE. Matt McMuscles has a really good episode of Wha Happun that explains how this movie came to be.

They probably blew their wad on all the late 90s cgi that was shit even for the time. The script was garbage. This movie was a huge money grab and 90% of the cast are on par with porn acting. They couldn't get half the original cast or crew to come back, the director was the cinematographer for the first movie, and the movie came out 2 years after the first so it's not like it was in production hell forever. It just seems like no one on set or behind the camera cared about anything but fan service, which failed hard, and thought the name alone would get people to see the movie.
Sad part is, it actually made money. Almost twice the budget.

The stunt double for that Raiden fight is Ray Park and this was his first role as a stunt double. If you don’t know who Ray Park is, he played Darth Maul.

I've been keeping up with the story of the MK games since 2005 and had done a deep dive of all the old games' lore through all the bios and endings before the reboot game came out in 2011. And having said that, I gotta tell you, I've seen the new movie already and I'm really not happy with it. It feels like someone took a brief glance at the games and just inserted whatever they felt like.
No spoilers obviously.
With that having been said, would you guys consider watching the animated movie Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge? It came out recently and it's a fantastic adaptation of the game's story, and while it's not perfect, or a 100 percent accurate retelling, it's a genuine labor of love and it's just as, if not more violent than the new movie that's coming out.
I will shill the absolute hell out of this animated movie lol it absolutely deserves a sequel.

In the games Sindel wasn't actually evil, she was just being mind controlled. Even though the movie never bothered to explain this, that's why she gets to live at the end. (They actually retconned all this in the newest game MK11, Sindel is officially evil now)

I *still* put this over the shit show that was Mortal Kombat (2021). Even though that one might've been less cringe, it absolutely sucked at feeling like classic MK. It's a red flag when the only good thing most people had to say about it was Kano.

Annihilation is lowkey my guilty pleasure. I love this movie. And my mother can attest as 5 year old me had her play it on loop for literally like 2 years. Everyday. I can still quote it.
The robots have dreads because they're slightly inspired by the Predator
As a kid I only remember disliking two things from this movie because as a kid I did know the game, smoke shooting a rocket was incorrect, it's the red robot that had the rockets. And then the animality looked shit even back then. Now rewatching this as an adult there's a character misstake in every single scene.

Max Payne at least has competent green screen and line delivery. Still atrocious, especially compared to the game, but it doesn't have any line delivery as bad as "Too bad YOU... ... will DIE."

One moment from that film that really stands out, it's suppose to be set in Medieval Fantasy Times yet at more than one point you can see pick-up trucks driving down country roads in the background.

I saw Mortal Kombat Annihilation at the theater with my friends when we were 16. We were huge fans of the first one and a bunch of dumbass teenagers who didn't know squat about what made really great movies yet. I remember sitting in silence/horror through about half of it. Only ones in the theater. Till someone in the group says "what time does Tomorrow Never Dies start?" So we left MK:A and went to buy tickets for 007 but the theater workers were cool and said since we watched less than hslf and didn't try to sneak into the other movie they just comped our tickets. Overall a good decision I thought. Finally finished Annihilation one day some time later. It was DEFINITELY a good decision..
Wow I don't remember this movie being so bad lol. In the games Sindel was under mind control, and is suppose to join the good guys so I guess that's why she lived even though they didn't explain any of that in the movie. You guys should react to Mortal Kombat 9 all cutscenes. Its about 2 hours long and tells the story of MK1-MK3 way better
and yes things are different then the original MK1-Mk3 but it's still way better then these movies. I think Marketa will enjoy the MK9 story better then these movies
For an example of an actually (somewhat) good videogame adaptation, watch Silent Hill.
It still has its problems, but at least it's a passable movie in general cinema standards. Which should be the only standard that counts.

First movie is good and still holds up (for the most part). Annihilation is basically the equivalent of a grind house film version of MK. I do like the fight scenes though.
No word of a lie, this was the very first movie I had ever stopped playing halfway through. I rented it, I could NOT finish it. That's how bad I thought it was.

Yea he was supposed to be Shinok, but this came out before MK4 so they didn’t know what he looked like. Also this was supposed to be a trilogy and the third would have brought back both the original Jonny and Rajin and would have quanchi as the villain.

Blockbuster used to have a promotion -- you could trade in a rental you didn't like for another free rental. The only time I took advantage was when I rented Annihilation. Got a new rental the next day.

In defense of the film Mortal Kombat Annihilation I say: except for the characterization of SHEEVA and MOTARO, not to mention BARAKA that got bizarre, the film was not so bad. Worst videogame movie was STREET FIGHTER, which both writer and director did shit after shit in the history of the game.
I saw this movie today on HBO MAX for the very first time (I believe) because I wanted to prepare myself for the new mortal Kombat movie, I was surprised at how bad this movie was. Looking at the lore now there's so much they got wrong... But only because of the "instability" of the lasting effect for the title. They didn't understand that this would turn into the fan favorite of the fighting genre or how influential it would be.
