All our gods lyrics are very emotional as a lot of them are written by Tom Searle after he found out he was terminally ill! For him to write and record that album prior to his passing will always stand testament as a true show of spirit and mentality! Incredible

    Architects 2014-2018 in a nutshell:
LF//LT - Tom is diagnosed with cancer
All Our Gods - Tom knows his diagnosis is terminal and his remaining time is finite; the album is essentially a window into the highest highs and lowest lows of Tom’s mind as he contemplates the meaning of life
Holy Hell - band grapples to find solace and adopt a more hopeful outlook in the wake of Tom’s passing

As you got into in the video, much of Holy Hell is very directly written lyrically about Tom as well as a lot of his unfinished songs and riff ideas were still used for the record.
All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us is the last record that he was fully a part of, with the album releasing just a few months before he died. An important detail when listening to these old records is that Tom was the primary songwriter for the band, writing most of the music himself, as well as much of the lyrics.
Whenever you get to All Our Gods I recommend paying attention to the lyrics, some of the songs are absolutely devastating, given the context of his death not too long after the album release.

I can’t wait to see your inevitable All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us reaction that has to be coming soon. It is 100% on par with this album and is just as great. LF // LT and All Our Gods lyrics are both extremely heavy around the state of the world.
That one is Tom’s last album. Released in May 2016, then Tom died in August 2016. Tom was the founding guitarist and primary songwriter of the band.
He wrote the music of Doomsday on Holy Hell…or rather…it evolved from the music he wrote for a song for that album. His brother, Dan, wrote the lyrics for Doomsday following Tom’s death. It’s heavily noticed with lyrics such as “they say the good die young” and the song hits so much harder when viewing it through that lens.

Their lyrics have a lot references to previous tracks. That line in Holy Hell is referring to Broken Cross: 'remember we were born to burn'.
There is another one in For Those That Wish To Exist where they keep repeating 'Everything is fine' in the background of the bridge and that is a reference to These Colors Don't Run's lyrics - 'So repeat this line - everything everything is fine'
And my favorite is from Damnation from Holy Hell Album where Dan refers to what Tom wrote in Gone with the Wind - 'if hope is a prison, maybe faith will set me free'
That is why I love this band. Holy Hell is essentially Dan having a conversation with Tom after his death and it is the most beautiful thing

there is some lyrics that echo through their songs, take for instance, deep fake has lyrics like, “a return on the souls they sold” and then nihilist from all our gods have abandoned us has lyrics like it as well, “we sold our souls but couldn’t buy salvation”. a lot of songs have echoing lyrics, and it’s fun to figure out what song they come from. *btw, there’s a ‘for those that wish to exist’ callback in deep fake if you never realized.*

What a bloody pleasure watching that! Great reaction, and analysis. Absolute banger of an album, it’s good to hear an objective opinion that agrees as I do feel I hold a lot of nostalgia for older albums. That being said I hope you get to Hollow Crown at some point, production inevitably suffers a little but I say it holds up and shows another snapshot earlier in their sounds’ development.

On your comments regarding Toms death, timeline etc. just so you know Tom was the main lyric and music writer for the band before he died, hence the big change in sound after. Toms last album he wrote was All Our Gods… A lot of the songs are VERY deep when you realise he is writing about his impending death to cancer, especially Gone With The Wind and Memento Mori. Also why Sam finds those songs so hard to sing live emotionally.
Technically the riffs for Doomsday on Holy Hell were mostly written by Tom then the band built on it after his writing. Also Dan is Toms TWIN brother and now writes the lyrics 👍🏻

I’m about to hop into this video while I work on a uni assignment so I feel like I’m chillin with drew out here
this album is, literally, the album that got me into metal. I remember my brother and I were into a lot of uk alt rock at the time and it was starting to get a bit old. he came into my room one day telling me I had to hear this band called architects - and I asked ‘is it some lower than atlantis type shit?’ and he responded ‘not exactly’ - he played gravedigger at full volume on his speakers and that first breakdown absolutely blew my brains out. at the time, the music was still a bit too heavy to what I was used to, but I still knew I could dig it. I dived into the record not long after and fell in love with heavy music then and there. told my mates about it at school, and a big group of us went to go see them on the all our gods tour a couple years later - while I don’t fuck with the newer stuff, I will always respect architects for getting me into this stuff - they deserve all the success they’ve had.

This album is, to this day, still my absolute favourite record I have ever heard! I follow Architects since their 4th record The Here & Now, so two records before this one. And when LF // LT came out and I got my preordered CD, I not only listened to it once, I listened to it three times in a row because of how good this was at that point of time!
The albums before that they were imo trying to figure out which sound they want to have and with this record it just all clicked. The riffing was, as you mentioned, so ahead of its time. But in comparison to All Our Gods... or Holy Hell its way more prominent and versatile. The overall sound is just more raw but in a good way.
So when All Our Gods... came out I was, at first, a bit dissapointed in that the guitars were more stripped back or kind of in the background of the music overall. But then in context to Tom Searle's state of health at that point and the lyrics it just made sense to let more room for the Sam's vocals and the ambience sounds in AOGHAU.
LF // LT had so much impact on my taste of music and on my life in general (through its lyrical content) that it will just forever have a special place in my heart and I'm glad you diggin' it right away!

Have you heard of a very small band called Rogue? They have 3 EPs Anomaly, Aeon & Phantom. As a fellow fan of Currents & Architects trust me you’ll love them. I don’t know how they’re not bigger!

I know All Our gods is cosidered their best but LF//LT is 100% to me their absolute best work both with the singles and the album as whole. This album was what defined them, and more specifically Tom as a writer. I love that Tom gifted us with this album but mourn the loss of a talent that just can't be replicated.

When this came out it shaped metalcore. Every band "in the scene" copied this style for the years after. That's probably why this sounds so modern.

As for colony collapse, i woke up on my 12th birthday to News of the reactor failure of the Fukushima plant. It really made me wake up to the world as a whole. The song always brings me back to that moment, as tragic and devastating as it was.

Re Dead Man Talking and Orwell: the song is not about the environment but about whistle-blowers who have brought to light bad things various regimes have done in the past 20 years (think Snowden).
The reference to Orwell is about 1984: it tells a story of an enormous totalitarian country including all of Europe and Asia which employs mass surveillance on a huge scale. Mass surveillance which is also what Snowden uncovered in 2013 (so around the time the album was being written) which checks out.
Also this wasn't Tom's last record, All Our Gods Have Abandoned Us is and it's basically got his magnum opus in the last track (Memento Mori). Which he wrote kinda knowing that his cancer was getting worse, unfortunately.
