      did not care much about this band untill this album was released, really strong vibe of our world collapsing in the eyes of a single person, maybe not a masterpiece, but definitely the best Architects work in my mind. I wish Tom did not pass away, this album gave me previously dark emotions, now it is just a way too dark for me. Also, kudos to Northlane, they did not just take the name from Architects song, their last song on Mesmer - Paragon is dedicated to Tom.

    Momento Mori is Toms song. The entire song is a clear representation of his pain, his fear, his hopes, his dreams, and his fact. His fate. Its so utterly beautiful it brings tears to my eyes all these years later. Tom was so creative and thoughtful when writing this song that he uses something as simple as silence, to represent his point of view. All instrumental rests, all the breakdowns, they all represent his state of mind fluctuating through out his last year or so of life. The lyrics arent what gets me the most, although they are heart wrenching. The part that gets me is that he makes US wait, like he had to wait, he forces US into his shoes. Forces US to wait, and see what happens next, and although what happens next IS different, its still the same. Its the samr thoughts. "Is your life worth dying for?". This was Toms way of asking all of us, if we died tonight, if we died in 10 minutes from now, when you looked back could you smile at the way you lived life? Would you be proud of your life and live it exactly the way you did before, over again? His musical manipulation to emotionally show us how he truely felt. What he really thought. Not seen or heard through metal colored glasses, but striaght from his heart, to the paper. The clock in the middle being to me, the most profound sound in the entire song. Because he uses it in the middle. When we KNOW therez more to come. And we KNOW its (the song) already started. He uses it to show us that you never know when. It could be tonight. Could be 50 years. But in the end death is an open door, and anyone could walk right through "will i see God?". Tom is asking if he will know when hes dead. If he will have that knowledge that he is no longer Tom Searle. Even the distorted noises at the beginning represent the uncomfortable, uncertain, annoying yet, natural state of mind he is in. He uses these sounds to represent the fact that he is uncomfortable. He is uncertain, and forces us to be uncomfortable, uncertain with him. He uses the lyric "The seasons bring relief" as a way of admitting to himself that he WILL die. That there is no hope for him to make it out alive. He uses the lyric "Its a promise that you can not break" as a way of telling himself that everyone will die. Its something everyone will go through eventually. And that you cant outrun death. You cant hide from it. You can only accept the fact that it is here, and it will take hold of you one day. This is also supported by the lyric "The universe survives on give and take" meaning that death is natural. One will die, and another born. Such is the condition of life. "As within, so without" Toms way of saying, "there is no help for what is inside of me" i have this sickness "within me" and the is no help with"outside" of me, much like inside because it will not go away on its own. "I will be consumed, returned to the earth" a play on words of "eaten up with cancer" the cancer will eat him, and when he dies, he becomes one with the cycle once more... this entire song is one of the most painful songs someone could possibly ever listen to if they know the story and sadness that lies within it. Much love Tom, you inspire me everyday. And you will always hold a special place in my heart as the truest, realest, most selfless person to walk this earth. You gave your very soul to your fans, you opened yourself up for all the world to fall in love with. And most people will never truely understand the way you did it. The way you kept your head up, and was so strong for so long. And refused to let something as simple as death, get in your way of creating something beautiful. You are a true artist. And you will never be forgotten. RIP Tom Searle.

    First time I heard Memento Mori, I weeped. The pain in Sam’s voice. The certainty in which Tom wrote the lyrics knowing he was gonna be gone soon. My favorite lyric that was “A declaration of endlessness, I swear I will not look back, as I return into the black. As the veil lifts, how will I know? How will I know? Will I see God?” That broke me. Carries a lot of meaning to me even now. Literal perfection! RIP Tom.

    "Of all the patterns that I could create,
    I built a labyrinth with no escape
    To keep myself under lock and key
    I am my own worst enemy" This might be the most impactful lyric Tom ever wrote. Talking about how the human body is capable of so many incredible things, yet his created something so awful in cancer. I cant imagine writing about your own death while you're still alive

      It's one of the greatest gifts any artist has ever offered me. An insight into the mind and the heart of a young man facing his mortality in a masterpieceful work of art. Sharing with me all his fear, all his bravery, all his wisdom and insecurity.
      I am eternally grateful to Tom for having the courage to share this with us. I know the album is beloved by fans and I'm heartbroken the very fans who grieved with the band after his passing are today bashing them for taking a new direction with their sound.
      I stand forever grateful that Architects were so open and transparent with us throughout his battle, and throughout their grieving process after his passing.

    • @terribletimmy2
      @terribletimmy2 3 місяці тому +2

      I interpreted it a different way personally. To me it's saying: I am capable of so much, and yet in the end I decided to build a labyrinthian pattern of thinking to keep myself from "escaping" (and addressing) the nightmare I'm in, which in turn has caused me nothing but despair.
      Of course in this context he is talking about his fear of the cancer and what comes next, but it also applies to so many other things. Creating a labyrinth in our minds to keep ourselves "under lock and key" because at least then we won't have to confront the unknown and sheer terror that is the possibilities of this world, our own weakness, potential downfalls, and even the successes.

    The outro from Memento Mori is the same beat as the violins from Death is Not Defeat. "Now you're finally complete, I will see you where oceans meet" is also a callback to Memento Mori.
    Hereafter is directly related to the band staying "here after" Tom.
    Holy Hell is the last guitar riff Tom wrote for Architects. "Remember we were born to burn" is a callback to Broken Cross' "God only knows why we were born to burn".
    A Wasted Hymn is also about Tom, referencing "Holy Ghost" the name of their documentary. The guitar notes starting at 3:29 are the last notes recorded of Tom's playing.
    Doomsday was the first song released after All Our Gods & Tom's passing. Tom wrote the main riff for that also. The full Holy Hell album wasn't released until a year after Doomsday.

    My uttermost respect for this reaction video. Whenever I listen, I cannot stop until the end and tears are included for sure. Same went for their lifeshow 2 days back. Tom lives on in them and in their music. Some days I'm the nihilist, fuck mankind, there is no loss in extinction of the human race. But then I remember that life is to end and we will all become what we where in the beginning, pure matter in the universe, all the same, pure love. Universe survives on give and take and what do all our little quarrels mean in the end if we all share the same fate? I'm sick of all the hatred inside of me, I will let go and become one with everything.

    I couldn't imagine how hard it was for the rest of the band to read the lyrics Tom wrote on this album, knowing how sick he was and where the lyrics were coming from. This album tears through me every time. Albums like this one and Northlane's Alien as another example, which were born out of such extreme emotional circumstances, I feel like they'll stand the test of time, because you can just FEEL the vulnerability in each word screamed. I could also imagine it's hard to record and upload a reaction to these types of albums, because you can only glean a general idea of what this album's gonna be like from people commenting, and then you get smacked with all sorts of emotion when you actually listen to it and piece together the meaning. Appreciate these uploads though, man! ✌️ I get a chance to both discover new music and listen to old favorites in a more intimate context.

      Truth is, they didn’t really know. Yeah, they knew he was sick, but they didn’t know the situation like he did. From what I’ve heard and read, he was kinda told survival was unlikely but didn’t tell that specifically to the band or even his brother. It was only after he died, they looked back and saw how much of the lyrics on the album were about him. They didn’t even realize Memento Morí was about his death, they thought it was just about death in general since that was something Tom thought a lot about, even before the cancer. That probably makes it even harder for them now since they didn’t know. I can’t be 100% on this, but I’m about 99% sure this how it went, probably different at certain parts. (EDIT: Correct me if I’m wrong.)

    Some extra information about the phrase 'memento mori'. It actually translates to "I want to die". It means: be absolutely willing to die. The lyrics "was your life worth dying for?" reflect on this. Make sure every day in you're life you can say you are ready to die. If you are not proud of what you've done in life, you can do better.

    • @iMattLewis
      @iMattLewis Рік тому +1

      It has a varied translation across different dialects but I see it as very similar phrase to ‘valar morghulis’ from Game of Thrones. “All men must die.”
      Every beautiful life must one day come to an end, and so “I want to die” or “I am ready to die” or “everyone does eventually die” are all valid interpretations.
      Bloom by Of Mice & Men is another song that deals with the same themes and both are absolutely beautiful pieces of music

    This album is the reason why I became a huge metalhead and changed my perspective on how to see music. This album never gets old and is always as much impactful as it is at first listen, the meaning behind it gives another side and appreciation to it. Architects wrote music and lyrics that a ton of bands will never do, they have nothing to proove and owe nothing to anyone. They write bangers and write/wrote real emotional intense music. Will always love this band even tho their new stuff isn't my cup of tea, if they are happy and enjoying the music they write and there's people to listen to it, then that's all that matters

    Your initial interpretation of From The Wilderness was correct. It's one of my favourite songs ever because the message is so interesting and conflicting, but probably true. So many people are guilty of "being up in arms without lifting a finger" and I think Tom truly nailed the lyrical, political and ethical message on that track. I really don't know if another song is as bleak as From The Wilderness when discussing political/environmental issues besides maybe Colony Collapse. I really love any kind of lyrical content that looks at the human condition and Tom will forever be one of the greats for his contribution to those topics.

      I don’t know why you’re explicitly point a finger at political based areas for that when the whole human race is to blame. Myself, yourself? Tf are you going to do to fix the planet by yourself, nothing. The exact same answer I’d give for myself and every person I know. Most people will say “nothing I/we can do, not enough people care”; that’s the mentality because people were convinced and indoctrinated to think that way for thousands of years. And it’s exactly correct because it’s too far gone like cancer.

    To this day I can’t imagine how painful it was for Sam Carter to sing these words live after his passing. I can’t imagine the grief they all felt.
    Tom Searle continues to be a big inspiration to me. I remember the day he passed. My heart shattered.

    This whole record is just too deep for me. The lyrics for every damn song cut so deep. It's a masterpiece in every way. When I go back to it, I'm messed up for about a week. I miss Tom dearly. Tom's magnum opus for sure, but Dan and the boys have been killlllling it since Tom passed. He'd be so proud of his brother and friends. T//S 🖤

    So when it comes to the lyrics, Tom wrote them all up until the end I'm pretty sure. Then Dan took over afterwards. Sam just does vocals and some production stuff. I think it makes perfect sense to not hyperfixate on your own inevitable passing as your last words to the world. This album is legendary and always will be. Gone with the wind makes me cry every time I hear it. Can't wait for your reaction to daybreaker. Also I think the beginning of memento mori is meant to mimic the sound of a cat scan(the device used for the screening of cancer)

    I was fortunate enough to see them a few years back before they released their last two albums so I got to hear a decent amount of older songs live. It was such a fantastic experience. Then had tickets for the last two times they were supposed to come to the states but cancelled. It's sad knowing I'll never pay money to see them again because I have no desire to hear their arena rock setlist. Hopefully they do an anniversary tour for this, HH, or LFLT. That's something I'd spend my money on.

  • @aceofhearts37
    @aceofhearts37 Рік тому +6

    You absolutely gave this album the respect it deserves. I had the absolute pleasure of seeing them live last week and they played the intro part of Memento Mori as an acoustic guitar/piano version. Bawled my fucking eyes out. Can't imagine how hard it is for them to play this song (case in point, they only ever played the intro live, and they took Gone with the Wind out of the setlist for this tour because it's so emotionally taxing for them to play).
    And you hit the nail on the head too with the people who whine that Architects should make another album like All Our Gods. The question is... why? Do they want the band to be in that same headspace again? Do you want them to try to recreate (or worse, endlessly milk) the art of a man who was dying, or do you want them to be musicians in their own right and explore their creativity? Holy Hell was already a full, beautiful tribute to Tom. The band deserves to remember him dearly and move on.
