- Before learning how to T-spin or do DT cannons, make sure you know how to move your pieces around! If you want to play like the pros, you're going to need to figure out not only the basic stacking, but also the basic way to put the pieces where you want them.

Its been 3 weeks since I watched this video and I have actually started focusing on my finesse. I have trained to have atleast an 80% finnese rate and I can say it really helps with not only keeping my brain focused more on actually trying to place pieces down, but also lessen the tension on my fingers whenever I try to play fast. When I first started I actually get cramps because of trying to play fast without knowing the proper way of doing so. Thanks Orz!

I’ve gotten really good at tetris by myself, like .. “self-taught?” Lol. But I’ve hit a plateau in my improvement, so I’m swallowing my pride and dipping my toes into the online tetris community because everyone seems impossibly good at it. Now I’m angry I didn’t earlier because I have to rewire my muscle memory. 😔 I rotate the right way but I gotta relearn how I move the pieces - holding down the button instead of rapidly tapping is gonna be frustrating. Yeah there's SOOOO many good players it's confusing, and there's not a single top player explaining strats, you literally have to analyze top players to figure stuff
So I've played Tetris Sprint for around 2 years, and all I did was keep playing the same way again and again without changing anything. I reached 57-59 seconds on good days and those times I was still using the upwards key to rotate everything. I learned recently to finally break out of my shell and use the z and x keys to rotate left and right. It took me a few days to get used to it but I altered my muscle memory. After that, I watched this video. It helped so much turning the sound on on every finesse fault in jstris!! Huge recommendations. The first time I played with it, my time went from 1:10 to 54 seconds, finally breaking my record in just a week of practice in comparison to the 2 years of playing again and again. Thank you!! I practiced more and got 2.5pps which is absolutely amazing, my finesse dropped to 60-70 in comparison to my old 100-120. What was amazing was that it was too easy to do, I didn't even practice on Tetresse yet and I've improved so much.
tl;dr: Don't triple rotate and turn on the sound for finesse faults! It'll improve your game A LOT.
As someone who has nearly mastered finesse, this is a great guide!
I've been able to freestyle my way down to 1:06 on a sprint, but I was really struggling with pushing myself to go any faster without misdrops. Finesse is literally the PERFECT solution for this! Learning the rotations off of the wall feels SO consistent and I'm sure once I have re-wired my brain to use them quickly, misdrops will be a significantly smaller stressor. Love the vid and the tools you give at the end
As someone who is a more experienced player who never practised finesse this is really helpful! I just started and really regret not practising it earlier on and tbh the struggle is real.
Especially because finesse is super helpful when you play higher ranked games bcz then small mistakes and extra rotations can really waste time.
So if there are any new players watching this I really recommend doing it earlier on if ranked or speed is important to you!

The jstris finesse modes are nice! Sometimes it's possible to double tap instead of das + tap in the opposite direction.
My finesse is not great, but my movement has been so ingrained into my muscle memory that focusing on it makes me slower
Same for me,but eventually even my 'slow' 40L times became 10-15 seconds faster than my personal best was before i practised finesse
Been a melee player for years and just got into tetris. I loved how he mentioned that and I was like oh shit there must be something to that!! tetris and melee are the only two games i have ever been compelled to grind.

Ive wondered the same thing. I love Melee and Tetris equally. The games give me a way to express my creativity and competitiveness. There's a lot of appeal to me.

I enjoy Melee, Tekken, Tetris, Chess, and many other games for the reasons stated here. Some games just allow you to express some artistry and personal expression at high levels of play. A lot of games become "solved" in a way that restricts play, but this other kind of game opens up and forces creative solutions to a unique paradigm of problems. I'm sure there's a reason why things "feel like melee" and why our type of people are attracted to them.

i’m glad i learned it a few days after getting into tetris and i never used the up arrow (but did triple rotate) it makes placing stuff so much easier (i’ve only been playing about a month for context)

Thanks, man! I was so confused when I watched all them pros stacking with super high ppm. I thought they held the left/right keys for the exact right amound of time until the piece hovered over the correct spot. That's what I thought finesse was. Turns out I was wrong! The pros use 0 ARR. I didn't even realize they did the DAS-tapback thing until I slowmoed some top gameplay. Whups. I'll be working on this for sure!
The maps linked in the description were incredibly useful for initially learning the key presses for each piece, but personally I found using reset on finesse fault crucial for me to begin engraining the muscle memory for it. Something about losing all your progress if I mess up really forced me to think harder, instead of tetresse giving me the answer when I do it wrongly without thinking

I actually playing tetris for a while and i got sub 52 in tetrio but i use weird key bind that its the same as normal keybind that new player got but instead i bind rotate counter clockwise key to right- ctrl key and surprisingly it somehow making new player like me playing faster and easier to memorized but when i go to higher(rank in tetrio) and getting use to it it backfired since it like cap limits of using too much right hand to do many things so right now i try to practice finesse + using new keybind that improve efficiency its actually really hard like try play tetris all over again (except i have the eyes of viewing t-spin setup) :)

I’ve realized recently that incredibly, there is even more to finesse than this!
the next steps in order would probably be:
DAS preservation: hold down left or right if you have a chain of pieces you all want to place on the same side of the board.
Super DAS preservation: If the placement requires a double tap or das and tap back, you can hold down instead for the second tap to charge das if the next piece is going all the way to the side.
This actually works for any placement with tap as the final movement
I really had to think about this after seeing VinceHD’s 2.37 kpp 9-0 run and how that’s even possible even with smart stacking.
Thanks for bringing this up! I think DAS optimization is pretty interesting, but I didn't include it because it was a little beyond the scope of this video. It's arguably not super important in unlimited tuning games. I go over it a teensy bit in my 6-3 video.
What you call a "super das preservation" is a technique called pipelining. More on all of the different das optimization techniques can be found on the harddrop page: harddrop.com/wiki/DAS_Optimization
But, you've correctly identified that the two main ones are just regular das pres and pipelining. The other ones are a bit more niche.
What can be really cool is that sometimes in tuning limit games it's better to forgo two step finesse so you can get a good pipeline (because das optimization in those games is really about skipping the das window rather than saving keypresses). If you want to see more really really technical das optimization, I definitely recommend watching some high level puyo puyo tetris sprints.
I didn't understand the second one
After I started using ccw and 180 instead of triple spinning cw 2 weeks ago my finesse went from an average of 50% to 70%, I have to work on the other stuff but after barely holding my place at S- before I can now stand my ground there, looking back I’m impressed that I even managed to get to S- with triple rotate lmao

Along with Tetresse, I found that Big Bang on Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 worked for me as a finesse trainer. I'd learn the finesse tips on Tetresse, then apply them to Big Bang, which I find is more fun to grind muscle memory on than Tetresse 😅. Really helpful video too!

I can get 2.3pps but end up with around 100 finesse due to my hyper tapping vs precision that I tend to use as a crutch. learning finesse is absolutely the next step, instead of chugging to 3pps

I mainly use tetrio as my main tetrio client and see and have adapted to my custom bindings. However, on other clients such as jstris, fourtris, and even tetresse my das and arr settings are completely different from what I have set in tetrio. Is there any way to accurately set your das and arr settings on clients other than tetrio which correspond and act/move the same way as if it was in tetrio?

It's funny because I've figured pretty much all of these things out just from watching people recently, I know it wasn't nearly as much of a thing back when I was playing a decade ago, at least not that I noticed; definitely makes playing faster easier (now I just wish my brain would stop being a potato so I could actually play the dang game again..)

Total Tetris beginner here (well, I played a bit as a kid, but who hasn't, right?!). I'm rotating 3 times all the time, lol. I should really work on this as soon as possible since I have not yet formed any habits (I hope). As a kid, I only ever used a single rotation direction.

u can still use das movement in classics like NES ,but the das movement itself becomes a barrier at higher level speeds which is why hyper tapping and rolling was made

(assuming you're a beginner just trying to stack for tetrises here)
but the basic idea is to place your pieces in a way that accommodates your upcoming pieces. Especially if you can't look at your previews that well, this basically means you should stack so you're ready for anything: avoid (or fix ASAP) "dependencies" which are patterns on the stack that can only be filled by certain pieces, and avoid creating large differences differences of height between parts of your stack. I wrote up some diagrams and stuff here if you want them: uc-coaching.herokuapp.com/response#stacking.
The best exercise I've come up with to practice this fundamental stacking is "the eternal exercise" jstris.jezevec10.com/?play=9&mode=1699 which is basically just a restricted 40L sprint where you can only clear tetris and have a limited board height. You can also just do this in marathon / tetris.com if it's too hard. Really focus on avoiding those bad patterns above and fixing them ASAP with the appropriate pieces if you are forced to make them. This exercise will always be useful until you can do it really easily at basically your sprint speed.
I have some ideas for fleshing this out more and making an even more robust form of the exercise, but I'll make a video if I ever do so sub sc riii be ha ha ha ha ha

Some placements are extremely counter-intuitive. Learning them is kinda mandatory, or you'll go by intuition and make errors.

I never understand how to move the pieces when some top players play with low DAS, it's just too slippery that when i click the button, it moves by whole board, not sure how you are supposed to "aim" it
Handling is all preference, especially DAS. ARR should be low, but don't feel pressured to put DAS as the same as top players. I will say that it becomes easier to play with lower DAS and most players slowly adjust it down as they get faster. Just set it to something comfortable. (I'm pretty sure Riviclia plays with like over 100ms DAS and he's like sub 17 lmao)
not looking forward to learning optimal finesse since I've grinded down to a 32 second time without it. Lots of muscle memory to override
I got to a 50 second time by only rotating in one direction and rotating with my right hand and dropping with my left.
Transitioning to rotating in both directions with my left hand and dropping with my right was one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life lol. I'm at a record of 46 now and just discovered finesse.

i didnt even realize i used finesse naturally because of the version of tetris i played- its a shitty school version of tetris and it speeds up stupid fast. its basically nes tetris but with a lot of glitches. playing on it for all those years paid off ig
Honestly learning finese and changing my handaling settings from default on tetrio made me much worse, I'd be rank A+ easy before, now I bearly stand my ground vs A- players. I've been training it for 2 days for a few hours and I seem to not make many finese faults, but my speed is half now.
That's what learning a new skill will do to your game. But think of it like this. Without finesse, you would be stuck in A+, making it very hard to improve. With finesse, you initially will see a decline in your gameplay, but that's just because you're not used to it. Learning finesse opens the ceiling to more and more improvement. When I learned finesse, I had an around 50 second sprint time. Now, I'm at 37 seconds, and I can say, for sure, that learning finesse carried me there.
yeah, speed gets much worse, but over time you'll get much faster than before :]. it'll become muscle memory slowly, not in 2 days and a few hours. and soon

Fixing triple rotation at SS rank, now i cant even win against S-
it's also not very hard to change your habits. I spent a year triple-rotating and it took about a week to get comfortable using good finesse
So envious reading all these commenters who got sub-40 without any knowledge of finesse... I barely made it to sub-60 before scrambling to learn it. Sitting on a 40.9 now and realizing that it's my visualization and lookahead that's holding me back more than my finesse, just feel like an idiot because I've played this game for so long to be so bad at it.
