  • Losing weight gets harder the older that we get. Especially after 60! When I worked at a Pizza restaurant as a young woman, I could eat as much cheesy goodness as I wanted and not gain an ounce. Now, I just look at a glass of water and feel myself expanding. The good news, it that there are small things that we can do to get healthy at any age.
So, in this morning’s video, I want to share 8 small things that you should get rid of if you want to get to a healthy weight in your 50s, 60s or better.
Do you agree that losing weight after 60 is harder than ever? What do you do to stay in shape? Do you exercise? Eat healthy food? Dance? Something else?

Melanie. Scientific studies agree with what is written
in the bible, speaking positive in your life. A study
was done using water. Beautiful music made the
water form a beautiful pattern. Hard rock music
made the water form an ugly pattern. Another
experiment was done with rice. Beautiful was
written on a glass jar of rice, (cooked rice) and
a month later the rice looked the same. On
another jar of rice the word ugly was written on
it, a month later the rice turned spoiled, and black
looking. I had stage 4 cancer, and a year later the
cancer was gone, without chemo. I spoke the word
of God over my body. The world was created by the
word of God. That's how important words we say over
      ourselves matter.

@@katkat-fm3wj That is beautiful. Thank you. Yep. It was time for me to let go. Let God. The peace in my soul is overwhelming. My Hyperthyroidism treated with oral chemo meds is so much better. Faith is my foundation. I am fitter than 40 year olds when tested in april. Thankful is all i can say. We are worth more to God. I will honour Him to stay healthy body and soul. Much love and prayers from beautiful sunny Africa.

I need to lose about 40 pounds yet I can't seem to stick to any diet. My body is the Atkins or keto type yet I really don't want to eat meat. So, I am trying the "eat whatever I want for lunch and then a salad for dinner" with 10 minutes of exercise/day. Hopefully it will work.

Just please be careful of the sugars,
( Studies show that Cancer uses sugar to grow ) and bad oils that are " hidden " in foods, such as Palm oil, Canola and Soybean being major ones as well as others, as cancer and other health issues can come from those, and be " hidden " from you also until,
It's too late to fix. A person definitely should be able to enjoy life but just be careful and prepare for the years ahead. Just a thought.❤️

And also small bowls. 😆 I cut up some fruit & put it in a little bowl, or plate, (when I am by myself I use a dessert fork to eat it) Why not feel cherished with such a simple act. Instead of biting into the whole fruit & being all messy. When a friend comes over for a coffee I make them a little plate of cut up fruit too. Mix it up. Enjoy a couple of different colours, textures. Like a banana & berries, or apple and orange. Soft, crunchy etc. So much lovelier than prepacked food, and no cooking needed. Since cutting my fruit I eat it 2 pieces every day. A small change, but big benefit.

For weight, these eight help you go back to basics, one day at a time.
    1. Change environment: what surrounds you and get active as opposed to driving everywhere and parking close.
    2. Smaller plates: use for main meal, get something pretty. Don’t have to finish all of your food.
    3. Toss the TV: don’t spend too many hour in front of it.
    4. Comfy walking shoes: make comfortable options a priority
    5. Buy quality over quantity and savor the good stuff
    6. Wear more fitted clothes: this helps as a reminder to stay on track with good body image practices
    7. Ditch snacks: no after dinner or in between meal snacks, don’t even bring them into the house
    8. Minimize eating out: cook so that you know what’s in there and can manage it.

I just don’t watch the news or politically biased shows that depress me. I need my car to shop and to visit and meet friends. Walking or cycling is not practical during bad weather or for great distances or when you need to carry stuff. I agree with avoiding sweets like biscuits, cakes, etc. My snacks are low carb like hard cheese, avocado. I must admit to not walking as much because every path I take reminds me of my dog that died recently so I end up bawling. I trust I can work through it eventually.

You might find that watching a lot of TV actually makes stress worse. It took me about a week of missing it, and then gradually I discovered new hobbies that made me feel far less stressed than I was with the TV. I have a few health issues, and there are many things I’ve had to give up. But now I listen to good radio programmes (not politics or news channels), I paint and draw, I mess about on a cheap piano keyboard, I read books and magazines, and I keep a diary. I really don’t want a TV ever again. It sucked energy out of me. Maybe give it a try and see how you get on?

I discovered you today! I just turned 60. You gave a lot of good advice, thank you.
I will share my little journey with everyone. I am a Petsitter and dog walker. In March 2020 the lockdown brought my business to a screeching halt. I gained 25 lbs sitting around and watching Netflix.
In early 2020 I tore a rotator cuff muscle and spent 6 months in PT, which was the greatest blessing. PT reminded me that it is fun to exercise and set small goals.
In October 2020, with PT concluded, I vowed to hit the gym. I hadn’t been in 20 years.
Walking in your neighborhood works just as well but gym was the best way for me to monitor my goals. Also I added a fitness tracker app to log my food and exercise.
I chose the “boil a frog” method. I began very slowly, riding the recumbent bike for a few minutes. Going every day was key for me. I’ve progressed to walking the treadmill for an hour without much effort. My resting heart rate is 55. I can climb stairs without getting winded.
Within 6 months I lost 25 lbs, now a total of 27 lbs. Honestly it wasn’t hard. It took commitment of course, but like I said, baby steps.
I don’t guilt myself if I miss a gym day or eat a piece of cake. Move on and do better the next day.
Now I’m adding resistance training. I was hesitant at first bc of my shoulder. My doctor says it’s necessary to stave off osteoporosis.
My diet changes aren’t for everyone. I cut out ice cream. I added oatmeal for breakfast, which fills me up and helps regulate blood sugar. I eat a salad every day. I drink a protein shake. I don’t like much meat except chicken and fish. No more Splenda in my coffee.
I no longer crave sweets. I may snack on a handful of nuts, or plain yogurt, or hummus. Just stuff I already loved, so again no major changes. Logging everything you eat is truly an eye opener!
I didn’t mean to write a book! But hopefully it will motivate someone to start *moving* to improve their overall health.

Exercise makes you fit, but it's irrelevant to weight loss. Go LCHF; keto or carnivore. At the very least stop eating refined carbohydrates. Breakfast cereals are garbage. If you don't want eggs and meat (bacon, sausages, etc.) in the mornings, you're not hungry and can easily wait until the afternoon to have your first meal of the day.

I have lost about 30 lbs doing this since a year ago. It is now a habit. I don't really get hungry that much anymore. I don't exercise, but I need to, and have no desire for snacks anymore. I try to eat clean healthy food. I did it for my health, but losing weight was a benefit. I still eat pizza and all the things I like, but only in smaller amounts. I don't deny myself any foods that I like.

I have always had problems with my weight, part of it being my addiction to certain kinds of foods. In the last year and 1/2 I have lived by several rules that has resulted in my weight, at aged 62, less than what I weighed in High School. Sugar is a real problem for me; once I eat it, I have a loss of control. So, I don't eat processed sugar or processed flours. I just eat whole foods, ALL whole foods. I eat three meals a day, no snacking in between, ever. I have 400 days of eating this way. There are other days I might have slipped a little but primarily get right back into the above stated rules for myself. I eat 20 oz. of vegetables every day. I eat 12 oz. of whole fruit every day plus protein selections and fats.

Hi Sixty and Me, Thanks for making this video about being healthy for women 60+. I have one more year before I get to 60. I am noticing small deposits of fat around my hips, back, and lower abs that didn't used to be there. I am trying to reduce my food intake, exercise, and love my body at this age. Thanks again for this video!!

I never watched TV, like you, I watched online those few things I really wanted to see. Then the rules changed in the UK which forced me into buying a TV License (you have to have one to watch BBC in any format and to watch programmes from any provider at the time of broadcasting). Since then, my TV viewing has increased tremendously. I have arthritis and find too much sitting around makes movement more difficult. I’m beginning to think I would be a lot healthier if I got rid of the TV again. I also think I would be mentally fitter if I made more effort on my appearance. You always look so elegant.

Small plates. Let me share my story. About five years ago, I began eating less. I just felt full after 1/2 my meal. I learned to put less on my plate, but continued to eat the same foods I enjoy. As a result, I've lost 30#. My husband took up the same habit to keep his weight in check after loosing 50# through diet and a LOT of walking. Due to health, he cannot walk the 4 miles a day that he used to, but his weight has stayed off. We are both in our 70's. So, you see, small portions on small plates can make a big change.

Gee, that necklace looks really lovely. I'm doing this; "I do what I want." If I want puff pastry, I learned how and make salmon filled puff pastry as well as raspberry and cherry vanilla, chocolate caramel or a combination thereof. One of my best rules is never travel alone. Bring a friend. Oh, and always be lovely, feel lovely, and exude that feeling everywhere you go.

I cut back 1/2 of what I use to eat. You’re right the smaller plate does help you to remember not to serve yourself to much food. I try to walk on my treadmill 36 minutes in the morning, and after dinner. I walk off 200 calories twice a day. And I cut way back on my desserts. I’ve found out once you’ve gained the weight, it’s so hard to get rid of. Thank you so much, great video.

Helpful tips from someone who's been watching their weight for 60 years!
*Avoid Processed Foods* Keep to the outer isles in your supermarket...vegetables, meats, dairy, etc. all the non processed food rim the walls of your supermarket.
*Don't have tempting food in your home...if you don't have it _you can't eat it!* Switch your snacking to fruit, nuts, seeds, vegetables...it's easier than you think.
*Keep in mind that the less sugar you eat the less you will crave it...if you can wipe it completely or almost completely from your diet _you will No Longer Crave it!* Fact!
*Craving sugar? Have a cup of diet or sugar free hot chocolate!* You'd be surprised...it's filling and takes away that itch for something sweet!
*Don't eat fast food!* It doesn't matter what age you are! It's bad and it's addicting!
*If you are able...try to walk 20 minutes a day!* If you need to build up to that, don't sweat it...the more you walk the more you'll be able to walk! Find a partner to walk with...it's fun and the time flies. Don't want to walk with someone...pull out your earbuds and play some music...music always makes walking more fun!

You surprised me! I thought you were going to tell about what foods not to eat! What a pleasant surprise. I will add something that I find particularly important. When you sit down and eat a meal DO NOT have any distractions, such as T.V., music, your cell phone, music, etc. Studies have shown when you are not paying attention to what you are eating, you will likely eat more. Also, you will enjoy your food more. Practice eating SLOWLY..it takes your brain 20 minutes to register that it's full. If you are racing through your meal before the 20 minutes are up then you will be wanting to eat more food. This has helped me a lot.

Hello Margaret, I've only recently found you but am loving your posts. You have a lovely voice and gentle manner, wise words and very encouraging....thank you for sharing with us.
Like all of us at 60+ fighting weight gain is a challenge.... I have found intermittent fasting works for me, if I stick to eating within the 8hr window I can more or less eat what I like. And you can't eat what's not in the cupboard, so leave the crisps, biscuits and cakes off your shopping list.....you are right it encourages healthier snacking.
Love to you lovely lady from New Zealand 😙

Always make a shopping list when you go to the supermarket and don't be tempted. Porridge oats with a little dried fruit for breakfast, will help you through the day.

That's an extremely high carb breakfast! Eggs are a great breakfast. I do a veggie scramble most of the time. Oatmeal always left me starving an hour and a half later. I complained about that as a kid .Sitting in school, lunch couldn't come fast enough!
