  • I used some more scrap wood to make a shop sign. I tried playing around with a few simple ways to make the wood look aged without getting overly complicated using different stains or paints.

    If you alternate your clamps, you will keep from putting a bow in the glue-up a a whole. Also, why plane something you want to look old and rustic ? Maybe just belt sand it with 50 grit or drag it behind the car down a gravel road.

      +doesrealityexist Thanks for the suggestions! The clamps were alternating, it just wasn't shown on camera. The reason I planed it was because I wanted to try some distressing techniques starting with perfectly smooth wood. That way if I ever had to build something with a specific thickness, I could plane it down and distress it after.

    If you want to have some fun making worm holes get yourself a pellet gun and some darts or just plain old throwing darts.

    Love your video- no talking! One comment though- I know 3 people who have had their hand dragged back into the table saw blade reaching over to retrieve the pieces they cut, just as you were doing with your left hand. Please be careful! Keep up the good work!

      +Thomas Johnson great point! I'm very very aware of the dangers and focused when grabbing the wood like you're saying. But I really need to make it a point to avoid it due to the dangers I expose myself to. I'll stop being lazy! It only takes one time...

      Thomas Johnson When u do carpenter work this is what you have to do. It's not a big deal if you use common sense and are used to it.

      Just for the sake of argument..when he grabbed the wood the cut was already complete and past the blade yea?

    Good video! The wood seems to be cupped already maybe that is part of the charm of the distressed look. Be careful with your table saw reaching back to retrieve the wood.

    Nice. I use a mixture of vinegar, and steel wool that has sat for at least 2 weeks to age wood.

      +Buffalo Builds Thanks, yes that's another option I'll use sometimes. It really just depends on the wood and the end result desired. Have you experimented with any other techniques?

    Great but not sure why you would put it through a planer just to rough it up again...

    Is there a list of items used to make option 1? I’m very new to staining and whatnot so any help would be appreciated. Thanks and love the video.

    Excellent video! Whats that orange-handled tool you're using just after gluing the boards (roughly at 1:58)? Thx!

      Thank you! +withit062714 That's a paint scraper. It works wonders for getting the dried glue off the wood.

    I think this is too much work for a $9.99 sign which are sold at Christmas tree shops etc..

    • @AModernMaker
      @AModernMaker  7 років тому +2

      +Cornelius Maximilianus You can't always get a sign exactly how you want it. Besides, I was using free scrap wood and trying out different techniques. You can't get that for $10.
