Nice end product. I don't ordinarily watch artificially distressed projects, but knowing your set-building background gave me a context for a practical reason for this process besides personal preference. Thank you for sharing your work.
This is one of the most well explained/demonstrated videos of wood sign making I have seen. Very clear and very enjoyable to watch. Thank you also for giving all the details of what you used and how you used it. So many videos are "show only" and they don't give the details.
@@NickFerry Ive seen videos that are "too talkative" and Ive seen videos that dont explain at all. lol. For those of us trying to learn in the hopes of actually making the item ourselves, its all about the details. Much better than "cut it, paint it, seal it" kindof video. My questions are always then "how, with what, what did you use, etc." You answered all of that in the video. You also went straight into the project without filling the first 6 minutes of introduction like a lot do as well. Perfect. I learned a lot in just one video. Thumbs up. :)
This is awesome. For a while now, I'm looking to make a sign with the name of my terrain. I will use the sign you made as inspiration to make my own sign. The weathering is really interesting. Thank you for posting this.
I like the idea of the bolt to make thread marks. Another way to distress panels ...lay it face down on gravel and walk on it. Simple and about as random as it gets.
Great sign. We've got a long stone drive and I've already chained boards behind my truck and dragged them up and down the drive. Stop, jump up and down on them a few times, drag some more : )
This is EXACTLY what I was hoping to find! Thanks so much for a fantastic tutorial! I love the stencil, completely appropriate for a "vintage" sign; stencils have been around for thousands of years!
My pleasure - i’m actually editing a video right as I type this that’s going to have some distressing and some faux metal in it - I should have that done by tomorrow if you want to check it out
This video is awesome. This is something that I have had trouble doing.... making something look old. Really glad you made this video thanks for the tips.
I like how you printed out the lettering and just wiped on the wood. All this time I've been hand painting my latter's. The time could be cut way down the way you did it. Thanks for sharing your technique 👍🏽
Thanks for the video. I often use a burner on the wood, more in some areas and less in others and then use a wire brush on an angle grinder with the grain. It generally takes off the summer growth faster then the winter growth.
I've watched several videos that tackle the distressing process, but yours is the best I've seen so far. The opening of the glue joint is a great touch.
Man I was right there with you because I happen to really dig old signage. Then the expensive, specialized equipment that I cannot justify buying (stencil cutter) came into play.
Then you are thinking about it backwards and not seeing what you have to work with - carbon paper had been my go to when I started - but then I didn’t have youtube to tell me what I couldn’t accomplish
Turned out Great Nick!! It's a cool feeling to try to make something look not perfect when most of the time we are trying to make things look as perfect as we can .... Great job Bro 👍
A nice technique video for those that like a rustic look. I'm not into rustic, but the techniques are interesting to watch. Plus, it's Nick Ferry video!! The only thing missing was Le Bucket lid !! ;) lol
Thanks for the info. We have been doing some projects like this for friends and sale. I like finding new ways to make old looking signs and stuff.. Thanks
Yeah they do. I just made a few for friends as gifts, took pictures and put them on our local buy sell marketplace on Facebook and they sold. I would just make to order . Id kinda like to do more. Not a ton of money, but it pays for my time and materials and a couple bucks in my pocket.. We are semi retired anyway
I had a similar idea for distressing signs etc. except I thought about using wire brushes, both hand-held and in a drill. I'll have to try it out and see if I can get results as good as this!
One way that I make things look rustic as I have a bunch of old keys on a big ring and you just take the keys holding onto the ring and slam it down on the wood it really does a great job of making it look rustic
You really should do more theater videos! You've got a great eye, a great way of explaining why you're doing what you're doing, and it's well filmed. There's a major dearth of videos like that for the theater community. I loved the Shrek castle and the organ grinder as well.
Thanks for the feedback - I have been trying to do more theater videos - a lot of times it doesn't coincide with my schedule - but you asking for more motivates me to make it happen
@@NickFerry I will. I was looking for ideas for a faux restaurant sign in my dining room and this fits the bill exactly. It's near the ocean so I wanted some kind of nautical look and a name like "The Captain's Table" or something similar. This would do it perfectly thanks.
@@NickFerry again, yeah good idea but where you can buy cheap pallet wood, they charge the earth for decent driftwood. It can get very expensive at flea markets near the coast.
Nice job Nick. Probably the best video I've seen on how to make a hand painted sign look authentically worn/weathered. There's million others on youtube, but most look fake to me. Yours truly looks old, Great work. I like the idea of the Sharpie drop shadow, never thought of that!
Great way to start the new year, a video from the Nickster! Nickerino. The Nick Man. Nickarunski. Nicky nicky... anyway, nice to see you in the shop bro. Have a great year!
Very very cool Awesome walk through on getting a great weathered look and you did a incredible job!!! Side note listen to podcast the other day I was so glad to hear it again and a Awesome show with awesome information.
My first comment of the new year and here goes. I like your vids and your presentation. I also like the sign. It looks great. You are awesome to watch. I've been making things as well.....for about 40 years. Some people can relate to this I'm sure but part of what draws me to maker channels (at least in the beginning) was the DIY aspect in order to not only DIY the project but to do it cheaper than buying or paying to build. Just about every person I watch on YT seems to think they have to have a CNC machine. I was loving this build till the expensive vinyl cutter :( I don't mean to be negative, man. I look at things like this as a way to make some extra money or in some cases for us poor folks any money at all. Sorry but 99% of the people don't have expensive stuff like that. I know it can be hand-lettered but again, most people that try that make a giant mess....lol. Look....I'm still a happy subscriber. I'm just getting this off my chest. I still like the vid and the project. Just one day....in the not so distant future.....if I'm still alive....I'd love to find that one channel that resists the urge to zing right past the average person's finances, and just keep it simple and affordable. One day.........................
I actually was going to show other ways of doing it but decided not to in this video - I can't show every way to do every thing in a video all the time - also can't show every tool a person could use to do each task - people need to take away what they can and make what they make even if tools, techniques and processes are an amalgam from various videos - glad to hear you are enjoying the videos!
Thank you for the reply. I once texted Adam Amin on ESPN during a game and asked him to please stop talking so much...lol. He was so cool with his response (as were you) that we became friends. Love hearing him call sports now. My point is I spoke from the heart to you and you were kind in your response. I appreciate that.

Hard to say but I’d imagine practice is one reason - another could easily be trying to trick your mind into it - a lot of what’s involved with it is counterintuitive to how you think it should be done
