I have found that buying starter plants and growing from cuttings is the way to go A) Because the're cheap & B) They are easier to acclimate to your environment. Growing my plants this way has taught me to be patient and appreciate them more. I find I can't stand watching certain "platform artists" with their mature plants, not grown by themselves, in their perfectly staged homes. I wish we had more starter plant stores in the UK, you are blessed to have so many options in the US, I am envious. Thanks for sharing and enjoy your new plants 💚💚
Thank you! I see there is a big rare plant collecting presence in UK, I hope more collectors out there start to sell starters online at reasonable price.
Good morning PW Now you have gone and done it! I had told myself that I did not need to go around looking for additions to my collection for a while. I mean I really don't have space. The other great thing about buying plugs is they are small so it lulls me into a false sense of thinking that there's room for the little one. Hah! But alas, if all goes well; the wonderful growth of the plugs will show that I was delusional in thinking that small shelf edge was sufficient for the long term. Back to rearranging the plants again. Having said that about no space left, I am heading over to etsy once I hit the "send " arrow on this comment . Not only are you a PW (Plant Whisperer) but also the new PPP(Plant Pied Piper). Please keep the videos coming though!
Mz Kathy! Goodmornig, that's so true about space lol. Especially with the additions that need high light, space is tight. Thank you, always good to hear from you.
Have quilted dreams! Like it lots! And it does well in my care....my dragon tooth cones are both dormant right now...so is my bambino and a couple more.....my cupera is mini your is amazing and huge! Great job!
Alocasia are so beautiful I just wish they didn’t have to go dormant but I also thankful because I’ve brought back so many better than they were before
Yeah, the dormancy act annoys me. But those leaves look so unique, I was willing to learn how to bring them back. They are fun during the grow season, with the fast growth and self propping.
I appreciate anything that helps me out during mite season especially with a large collection I welcome any plant that wants to clock out during that time 😅
Same, my online plants I usually go to Etsy and get starter plants. Today I was able to get the Silver Dragon and a Purple Sword Alocasia’s at a near by Lowes for $5 apiece. One cause the decorative pot was missing and the other just had a bad leaf. I couldn’t believe it. Home Depot had Alocasia Black Velvet but I can get it cheaper on Etsy. I also saw some Xanthosoma Caladium Lindenii. So definitely check out your local Lowes this week if you can.
Damn! Thats pretty good, I'm always at the big box stores seeing what's up. Cali big box stores often don't have the good stuff because the state so strict on agriculture shipments that are in soil.
9 out of 10 plants i buy are starter plants...pretty much from those etsy sites in Florida...lol... yes they are cheaper and also acclimate better but the satisfaction i get from watching them grow is where i get my joy of plants. for me to buy a grown plant is just no fun...most of the time anyway...
I agree! Watching and raising the plant is part of the collectors experience. I do understand that for decor purposes, some people want a mature specimen.
I crack up everytime I see them hay stacks on top of your plants lol you not playing about fighting them demons. The Makaveli is fire it looks just like a satin pothos on the first listing 😍.
I love starter plants 🌱. Whenever I shop online for a plant, it’s definitely starter because you never know if the mature plants will like it’s new home or not. Great video. New subscriber 🥰. Happy Growing! Blessings.
I love those shops and have spent a lot of money on them! The green escape has such amazing variety and can't wait to see what they'll have next. I just got a syngonium wendlandii for 20 bucks from them and the philo campii. I only buy starters or small plants, it just makes more sense. I need an Azlanii next but I'm waiting for the price to go down a bit
Nice! My Azlanii is the only one that hasn't waken up for Spring yet. You're right, starters make more sense, especially when the plant isn't for immediate home decor but more for collection. All my Alocasias now are 2nd gen from the starters I bought in 2020-2021.
The gren escape I also have ordered from...half and half with success calathea did fine...my cissus discolor is barely hanging in there in water...from last summer but it could be just me on my end!
Another good vid. I’ve always strayed away from starters because I thought they would not ship well. Thanks for putting me on to those shops. I have a Zebrina Reticulata and it’s the most underrated plant out there!!!
Thanks! I'd say, the time of year factors into buying starters and also a reputable shop. Oh yeah Zebrina Reticulata is definitely one of the most underrated.
I bought two alocasia from salad beards too! My dragon tooth and red cupera.....the plant company has amazing alocasia for great prices too! I have got like 10 from them!
I get 90% of my plants from etsy because I love starter plants! Cheap like you said, healthy root system, pests are rare & in any case easy to identify since the plant is so small, & the best part is you get to watch them grow. Makes them much more special (‘:
OMG, I watched this video and bought from both the shops you recommended! Now I shouldn't have but I did it anyway. Thanks for the tips, and this will be my first alocasia and colocasia plants. I can't wait.
😬 I feel the pressure for recommending lol, I hope they do well for you. Colocasias are a bit different, they like soggy soil and lots of light or some sun. Let me know how it works out.
@@mfuller3172 Alocasia are a bit easier when you buy them in Spring. They mainly need lots of light! I let the soil dry a bit but ALWAYS make sure its watered if you see a new leaf emerging. Regular soil from the bag with a little extra perlite is perfect. Doesn't need a very chunky soil mix.
I really enjoy my collection and I only add plants that I truly love. I’d never heard of the ficus shivereana before so thanks for putting us onto it. The shop wasn’t playing, their description made it clear this is a special plant and don’t expect it to be restocked anytime soon lol! Im glad I got one because they are sold out now.
@@AroidDistrict True! Mine’s a baby too. But guess what-I put her outside because my greenhouse lights are too strong for her, and she’s putting on major weight! It has shocked me.
Too funny I have the same Anthurium Radicans / Lux from same place, an just got the Philo Canpi an Selbys Hol from same shop. All have great roots an the Anthurium is pushing new leaves in a month. Great advice for everyone!! You’d better get ficus before their gone lol 💚😀
Ok, great video as always! 2 questions for you. 1) I saw the comment about the ‘haystacks’ on top of your plants. Is that dried Spanish moss? I’m also serious about gnats. Every time I water, I treat the water (mosquito bit tea) and use the Katchy thing. 2) what’s your soil recipe? Would you share that with us? Thanks again! ❤️
Hey, yes that's dried Spanish moss I found at the dollar store. I use mos bit tea sometimes but its too much of a chore so I use the Haystacks lol. Alocasias- I use normal bag soil like miracle grow and add a little perlite. They do NOT do well with very chunky mix for me. My other soil mix I share in the" Philodendron Talk" video.
Oh yeah. There are actually Black Velvet and Silver Dragons in Big Box stores sometimes. Costa Farms doesn't send new shipment to California for agriculture reasons. But lucky you!
@@annagenuine1799 I buy a lot of plants from southeast and northeast, they ship to Cali rather fast. They arrive faster than when shipped from nearby! Mind you, you still can find Black Velvet/Silver dragon for cheap here. Just not Costa Farms.
Hey, I use regular Miracle grow soil and add just a little perlite and rice hulls. I hear Alocasia do well in semi hydro as well. The roots need access to moisture much more often than Philodendron, so a very chunky mix isn't the best, in my experience.
Yo, I just went through the same thing with the shop I promoted in this video. The starters I recently got don't look like the pictures. They refunded me.

Dave, they are beautiful!
I have a renewed interest in alocasia again. Your collection is awesome. (The leaf drop/grow one used to drive me crazy). Great tips, thanks.😊
