I saw Alocasia and clicked SO FAST!! I’ve fallen down the Alocasia rabbit hole the last month and I’ve added 9+ different varieties… My KopperT Canada beneficial mites just arrived today so I can’t wait to add them to my Alocasia’s and the rest of my collection! Your story of them and my story, are both shared on their Instagram story! I’m so excited to get them all added to my plants :)
@@wildfernI’ve seen you and a few other people talking so much about the mites lately, I finally had to place an order! I can’t wait to see the results! These thrips are driving me crazy 😅
Alocasia dragon scale is just breathtaking. I used to only have the silver one but finally I purchased the regular green and the leaves are just unreal. It's like cartoon or something, just not real 🙃🙃 and yes, seeing yours truly motivates me to give my newly arrived dragon scale the best care it needs so that it can grow like yours too!
Hi Fern. I grow my variegated frydek in a self watering pot in pon. I tried various mediums and for me the best it's done in is definitely pon. I also hold the leaves up with bamboo sticks. I have found that doing this makes the leaves last longer since they are so big and heavy at this point. Love this video! I just added a few more alocasia to my wishlist because of it❤
Wow, that's the very 1st Alocasia Dragon Scale I have ever liked. That is gorgeous with very deep colouring. Oh I do potting mix with self watering all the time, it's great!! I also do clear pots with chunky perlite and potting mix directly on top, and a syringe that reaches from the bottom to the top of the soil, and I water through the syringe - works like a charm. Wow, I hadn't liked the Jaclyn until seeing yours!! That green frydek! 💚
Your Dragon scale is gorgeous! 😍 Mine is the same color as yours and was also sold to me as regular Dragon Scale. I think the color has to do with the kind of light it receives. I have 2 Variegated Frydeks - one in chunky mix and one in pon. They are both in high humidity + good light. They are both pretty happy but the one in pon is definitely growing faster ☺️
The two I love the most are also the ones I struggle with the most- I've killed several of each already 😱🙄😭😭😭 and both look insane in your collection - dragon scale and jaclyn
I click the video because your hair.. actually we need hair video, what you use, how you are caring for your hair, what is your routine , do you use supplements and vitamins... etc❤
Love your collection. Alocasia are my favorite. I grow all of my alocasia with sphag moss in no drainage vessels. I just pop in some osmocote every 3 months and water with superthrive regularly. I keep a little layer of water at the bottom of the vase so they never dry out, and they seem to be super happy like that longterm plus I love seeing the roots.
I think your NoID might be a alocasia clypeolata. The shape of some of the leaves look somewhat alike. So does the colouring. All of your alocasia look great! All of your dragonscale are just absolutely stunning!!
I have serious alocasia envy, girl. Mine just keep rotting I'm so awful haha. Living vicariously through you and never trusting myself to buy another ever again 😂
I had someone gift me a pink dragon to keep alive after me aging the same thing. This has been a simple alocasia that gets a leaf and loses a leaf. Right now it has two beautiful leaves after losing the newest one. I’m hoping to be in the three leaf club. But I tried again. Pick something simple cheap and try again.
I’m sure your frydek will come back!! My variegated Frydeks (I bought 3 during the summer) are in a couple different substrates and living in normal room conditions by my south facing balcony window. The small one was sent to me in a pon-type mixture so I left it in that mix and it’s thriving, and my 2 larger ones from a different shop are in a super chunky mix and also doing really well so far! They’re putting out new leaves, and taking forever to drop an old leaf, so I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it keeps up! I’m honestly not sure how they’ve been thriving so well, probably because of how humid it’s been this summer. The humidity has been coming down in the last week though, so I have a feeling I’m about to see some declines in my collection as we move into fall
Really love when you do each type of varieties of plants. The Hoya and Cacti are my top favourites. Alocasia’s i find they do great in pon in glass no drainage or lecca at the bottom and soil on top in non drainage works too. Since they like to be kept moist i find these substrates works best. Compared to just soil if stick with just soil make it more compact not too airy otherwise drys out too fast.
so pretty i love all of your alocasia!! i'm a big fan of the genus, but my planty coworkers at the nursey i used to work for a few years ago kept steering my noob self away from the begonias + alocasia i loved, saying they "weren't good for beginners". so i only got into them maybe 6 months ago, but my Zebrina, Sarian + Red Secret are THRIVING with huge leaves/ sizing up quickly/ no pest problems, so i think it's time for me to get some more, thanks for some new wishlist plants ;)
My Frydek var has been going wild! I think the trick to her has always been keeping the sphagnum moss topper damp, it just seems to help my entire Alocasia collection in my Milsbo Tall thrive. I make my own soil. One of my fave Alocasia's currently is the Brancifolia. When the Brancifolia starts cycling leaves it gets the same patterning as the Jacklyn but on a smooth surface. I rarely enjoy an Alocasia cycling it's older leaves out but it's mesmerizing watching the Brancifolia and Jacklyn leaves die when the patterning becomes so apparent.
I have my variegated frydek in pon and it’s been really liking it. It transferred super easily and has pushed out 2 leaves since transfer. For most of my Alocasia I usually put them in pon anyways since it makes it very low maintenance and I don’t have to worry about watering them as often. Also I have my black velvet in pon as well and it makes the world of difference for growing them.
i grow all of my alocasias in no drainage, and pon. honestly works like a charm. ever since i switched to this set up i haven’t struggled with alocasia (minus spider mites)
I love this video already! I am only up to Dragon Scale, I just wanted to comment to say that my one is very similar in coloration to yours, and I believe that it's a light thing. When I have mine right under a grow light for a long time it gets much greener but it gets the darker, blue/grey look in lower light. I love it! All that to say I don't think it's a hybrid, just a light thing, and that maybe some are more prone to the grey colouring than others. But I definitely love that look
I bought an alocasia poly from the depot. It was in a self watering pot and it grew, but died back to a stump. I repotted her and found a cloth plug suffocating to roots! I also found 5 corms inside! So now she’s repotted and has 2 beautiful leaves! I can’t wait to see it grow, and this video came right at the right time. Your collection is stunning! 😍😍
You look so cute now that your hairs getting longer. I love the look❤ I’m loving alocasia now that I’m an avid Pon user but I’m super paranoid about spider mites. I’m checking them everyday and spraying once a week
You should have a look at the Azlanii (has almost iridescent red veins), the Nebula (has almost blackish-green thick leathery leaves), the Lauterbachiana (also known as Purple sword), Cucculata (heart shaped leaves), Pink Dragon (green Leaves on pink stems), Tiny Dancer (Small droplet shaped leaves), Wentii (Big Green Leaves w. purple backs), Portodora (big ruffled leaves), Zarian (arrowshaped green leaves w. bright white veins) and Seudo Sanderiana (ruffled elongated leaves w. Purple backs) 🤗🪴 Just some of the alocasia in my collection - can't for the life of me grow the Dragon scale (they die/rot everytime i get one), so i'm envious og your specimen 😅
OMG the Azlanii tho, wow stunning! i hadn't seen most of the ones you mentioned + now i have many more wishlist plants lol thank you! the alocasia sarian is one of my favorite plants ever in my collection, mine has huge leaves/ petioles + it's just such a gorgeous, dramatic looking plant!
I figured out my silver dragon and dragon scale! I grow them in a pot that is like 80% perlite and cactus soil. Mine like super drainage. Now I just check to water about once a week. Of course, I look at them at least once per hour to admire their beauty, though😂 I've had both for over a year and they've given me so many corms and new plants!
I Love that you have a Zebrina now! They are really easy and size up so fast in my opinion, really fun and so beautiful!Definitely an underrated Alocasia…
LOVE alocasia!! Fern, you neeeed an Azlanii! Seriously, they're so unique and stunning. And more ravishing in RL than in pictures. My dragon scale is the same color as yours, btw.
I love my azlanii, but she’s def my most difficult alocasia. Do you have tips? I feel like she doesn’t want to size up. I know some alocasia stay smaller and more compact, and I think that might be the case. Tips?
Love this video which I must have missed when it was first out. Truly helpful and expiring. I just got a baby Silver Dragon and love it and about 2 years ago I purchased one that was labeled as a pink princess? It had a very cool stems and while the main plant is currently just a stump I have several corms that are now maturing. Love all your videos.
Wow girlie. The glow up is epic. I used to watch your videos years ago and just rediscovered you. You were always beautiful and I loved your style way back BUT HON-NEE! Whoa.
@@wildfern I have a cool smart 15 yr old daughter named Raleigh (pronounced Rah-lee) who’s been asking for a septum piercing and I think seeing yours just changed my mind.
I have my varigated Frydek in Pon in a self watering pot with a wick. It's very full and lush and doesn't lose any leaves. My cuprea is also happy with the same set up. I'm waiting for my acclimated TC of varigated Bambinos to get here next week!!
Fern I’m so happy to see someone mention the zebrina mine is very large has been easy care so far also I have to say you are looking more beautiful all the time love how long you’ve hair is getting 😊
Wow, that Olani is a new one for me, truly a stunner. That noID is gorgeous! Glad you might’ve found out what it is. Reminds me a bit of a chantrieri, which is 10/10 can recommend. Your CUPREA. Oh my GOSH! Gorgeous, beautiful, stunning, she is the moment. Mine does the same thing, spreads out (and she really likes to try and crawl 🤔 which seems like an instinctual thing for it) Thank you for this collection, alocasia are my faves! Your collection is amazing, and you are a fantastic planty parent and a planty Queen :) A fun collection might be oldest to youngest-well, maybe not the whooooole collection, but some of your oldest plants?
My variegated frydek is in about 80% humidity in my grow tent, receiving high light from a lamp for Like 13 hours on and low light for the rest of the time. It's pretty little (baby corm with three leaves) so I am still rooting it in a plastic cup with perlite, moss, and leca. Yours looks great though! Just grow it like your green one.
I love your dragon scales!! It's so black and green at the same time. If you even want to split them and sell them please let me know. I'm here for all of it 😊😊
my Cuprea does the sme thing.. it just grew so well but in all different directions. i added a fan shaped bamboo trellis to help pull the petioles just a bit closer together and it seems to work well.... love the jacklyn ...i believe she's going to be my next alocasia
SERIOUSLY?! Sharing my albos on Instagram and then uploading - I feel soooo SPOLIEDDDDD ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 LOVE YA GIRL!!! Such an epic alocasia collection! Was the black velvet the one that had the Halloween orange sock over the pot all that time ago lol. I remember iit was in the 1 leaf club haha!!
I have the Zebrina Reticulata, and it pretty much stays in the 2-3 leaf club. It looks like ours are about the same age too, I got mine as a plug in July ‘23. I kept hearing about spider mite issues and I literally saw my first spider mites last week (red ones). I rinsed the plant leaves and stems 2x per day for 3 days and I haven’t seen anything since. I do check it daily for more signs of them. I know that a couple of days treatment really isn’t enough but I do keep looking. I also came across a video from Liqui-dirt and Aloha plant life for a natural spider mite control. It’s Bronners Castile soap (tea tree and peppermint), 70% rubbing alcohol, and hydrogen peroxide. Mix it up, put in pump sprayer and spray your plants. I ordered all the things I need and now I’m going to spray my plants. From what I understand, the tea tree, alcohol and peroxide kill soft bodied bugs on contact and the peppermint helps repel the bugs from returning. 🤷🏻♀ I’ll see if it works.
I used to say that I’d never own alocasia and now I have 12 varieties 😂 Loved the video. All my alocasia including variegated Frydek are in a mix of 50% cacti mix, 25% orchid bark and 25% fern fibre and love life in it. Mine live in the bathroom under a grow light.
I have been waiting for a video all about you Alocasia!!!!!! The black velvet is my favorite plant of all time!! My black velvet lives in our bio active dart frog tank and loves it! High humidity and constant damp soil! Love love love it. Also, I’m not sure if you’ve seen the Alocasia Amazonica they are so striking, and they have a beautiful shine to them definitely one of the favorites in my collection!
Your Alocasia collection is gorgeous! The olani is so beautiful! I've killed quite a few, and currently only the zebrina reticulata is happy in my conditions. Maybe it's time to give them another try... 🤔
One thing I noticed all your alocasias have in common is how leggy they are. If you want some bushier/more compact growth, try potting in lechuza pon! They will def start keeping more leaves. Also, alocasias are extremely hungry, so make sure you fertilize often. Another benefit of pon is how nutrient rich it is, and alocasias love it :)
I used a chunky mix for my frydek and it partially rotted. Then I tried just plain perlite and it did so wonderfully! It was growing roots so fast that they were coming out of the top. I just had it in a plastic cup with no drainage and it loved it honestly. Then I messed up and put it in leca which I was excited about. And it completely rotted! All of the leaves fell off and it had no roots, it was just a stump. But I have it in water and it’s growing roots again so I’m just going to keep it in chunky perlite once it starts growing leaves again. Alocasia just love perlite. My neighbor was having trouble growing hers which was a stump as well so I recommended perlite and it started growing for her!
Hi. Can you please address Alocasia dormancy in a future video? Your experience in growing them in different substrates? Propagation of cutting vs corm, which is better? Some people complain they can’t get more than 3 leaves at a time….huh? Thank you.
I grow my v frydek in pon and it loves it. It had 4 beautiful leaves. It has gone a bit dormant at the moment as my apartment was close to 80 in the summer and is now 65-67 but the corm and roots are still great so I'm not too concerned.
My variegated Frydek loves lechuza pon, It really has jst taken off! Im not the best when it comes to keeping up with watering, so being able to essentially set it and forget kinda is a added bonus. Plus having it in a organic medium or soilless one cuts down on it being a pest magnet.
I would be interested to hear you outlook on Hilo Beauty.I have seen that it has been classified as both a Alocasia and Colocasia but i figured putting this comment in the Alocasia video section would work best.Although I am no expert at growing Alocasias and own a grand total of two(the other is a black velevet corm) they are very beautiful plants. The only problem tgat i have noticed that may be a common problems with Alocasia is that the leaves bend to the point that the crease and die.I water it correctly but i think it prefers greenhouse conditions which i dont have yet😅.I hope you find interest in Hilo Beauty though, a very beautiful plant.
I'm so jealous of your dragon scale being so lush! I have one but it's still young and only has two leaves. It's one of my absolute favorites though! Also I have had such bad luck with my frydek. It just got spider miltes, and before that It was just dropping leaves. The variegated one is gorgeous, but I'm scared I'd have similar issues and it wouldn't be worth it.
Hello there! I would love you to show how you grow the corms! I would love to get as good as you are with your plants! I love watching your videos! Thank you so much!
Round 2 for me trying with alocasia again LOL. I bought a cupria and dragon scale again. I watched your older video and you said you dont do anything extra with humidity. I will try less humidity this time around.
I think all Alocasia just need consistent watering whatever they are potted in. That is why pon etc works so well with them. They also need warmth to keep from dropping leaves and going dormant. My house gets 65F in the winter, and it is a struggle to keep them going.
yes i feed + water my alocasia more heavily than most of my other plants + wow they are getting so huge + happy! this is good to know thank you, my alocasia are thriving outside here in SoCal, but I will be cautious to monitor the temps + bring them in when it gets a little colder here. their leaves are so large, i'd hate to lose them!
Your Dragon Scale is truly wonderful. Alocasia Silver Dragon is super cool - very beautiful, easy going and resilient (even when there is pest havoc around her). It´s simply the best plant ever 😀I think you might also like Alocasia Azlanii (shiny purple - simply unbelievable) and Ninja (Reginula hybrid - small, easy going, very pretty). Alocasias are awesome - since I got my first Alocasia Silver Dragon, I have an alocasia fever/obsession 😀
I'm eying the alocasia melo and azlanii. I grow mine in a well draining soil in a self watering pot. Mine are crazy thirsty and hungry plants. The ones i have are micholitziana, polly, cuprea and a variegated one.
Hope your frydek makes a comeback. I still have mine in the substrate it came with (Planthaven Toronto). It’s doing well so far, 4 leaves still. So scared to repot it 😅
hi Fern! Love your videos from Italy. I was wandering if you can say more watering information while you are talking about a specific plant. If you use to water a plant when she is completely dry or not. I know it depends on the evironment but I think that having an idea would be helpful! thanks a lot
My black velvet does that twisted lean too. The corms that I got from her have all leafed up and seem to be staying upright.....for now. My dragon scale is doing well this year too since I put him in pon. I live in the UK and can only wish that mine will get to look like yours
The stingray, tiny dancer and wentii do best for me. Our Tasmanian winter reduced the rest to a garden of dormant corms in perlite. My favourite has to be Azlanii.
I love all the alocasias! I have been afraid to try them because when I read about them, they seemed to be difficult for many people. Now I want to give it a try. I don't have and Ikea cabinet greenhouse. Any suggestions? Maybe use a propagation box? Or is it really needed? I would love to learn more about them from you. I'm going to watch 2 of your older videos on them now. Thank you for another great video!
Wow I have the No ID alocasia as well and I am having the same exact problem with identifying it! I'm in Australia and got mine from a 'big box store' too. It was just labeled as alocasia and also has a picture of a completely different variety 😅
I bought 2var. frydeks at the same time, one went in pon right away and the other in stayed in soil and were both in my milsbo and the one in pon immediately sized up and have had to pot up already. The one I left in soil was dropping leaves. I repotted it in pon and I need to size it up already.
Really gorgeous collection you have growing in Canada. I am below the US on Dauphin Island, and we have great success in growing them outside, BUT I like to pot them up and bring them in. Question...I have a Sarian that was thriving in and out but I noticed the striking leaves began to lose color and have white web LOOK. I treated, cleaned and never found pests. 😢Nothing..then I cut all 5 leaves. Moved it inside to nurse back to health. Tis happening 😢😢😢again. Now what??

Try hydro methods :)) they often rot in soil and THRIVE in hydro like pon/leca
Use semi hydroponics remove all organic material… I also kill alocasia until I changed 👍

Oh wow! 😍 Your Alocasia collection has become so impressive! 💚
Collection videos are so satisfying. This video is so satisfying. Definitely need more collection videos by genus.
Fern I’m so happy to see someone mention the zebrina mine is very large has been easy care so far also I have to say you are looking more beautiful all the time love how long you’ve hair is getting 😊
Fern, I have an acrylic stake in the pot with most of my Alocasia, but my Cuprea is insane without it! She's always tied up to keep her controlled.
Omggg yeessss yours are so so pretty!!
Mine does the same thing, spreads out (and she really likes to try and crawl 🤔 which seems like an instinctual thing for it)
Thank you for this collection, alocasia are my faves! Your collection is amazing, and you are a fantastic planty parent and a planty Queen :)
A fun collection might be oldest to youngest-well, maybe not the whooooole collection, but some of your oldest plants?
How you described the variegated dragon's scale is literally so realistic that how I felt 😫😍
The fact that plants that look like that can literally be alive is insane and the reason I love house plants 🫶
My cuprea is re-growing from a corm too. Love the 3rd leaf, it was way bigger the other. So excited.
I’m editing to say it’s Dr Woods Castile soap, not Bronners.
You should get a alocisia scalprum it is my favorite alocisia in my collection. I love the darkness and length of the leafs ,so beautiful.
Hey girl! I would love a video on how you get your leaves to “size up” ☺️
Your Alocasia collection is gorgeous!
Hi Fern! I love the plant name color scribbles with the stars. So stinkin cute 😊
My variegated Frydek loves lechuza pon, It really has jst taken off! Im not the best when it comes to keeping up with watering, so being able to essentially set it and forget kinda is a added bonus. Plus having it in a organic medium or soilless one cuts down on it being a pest magnet.
I think I’m going to go for pon for it! Thank you 🙏
That dragon scale is perfection ❤❤❤
Watching your video on Alocasa Jackie and I had to buy one. I am running out of space to place the plants, they are taking over my Orchids
Okay this is making me want more alocasia! My frydek is in a glass vessel no drainage in a pon mix and she’s doing well! She thirstyy
I grow all my alocasia in pon now (including my Frydek), no more leaf cycling, they love their lives!
Dragon's breath alocasia has been on my wishlist for awhile if you haven't seen that one. I really love the look of it :)
Hi Fern. I put all my alocasia in self watering pots. Have a great day.
I loooove the color of the new leaves on the Dragon Scale. Not a huge fan of the gray for myself, But your plant is beautiful.
Round 2 for me trying with alocasia again LOL. I bought a cupria and dragon scale again. I watched your older video and you said you dont do anything extra with humidity. I will try less humidity this time around.
I adore my alocasia nobilis so much she would fit yout collection so well!
just got some fern merch!! ❤ so excited to see this video today 🌿
That is definitely a Dragon Scale. Sometimes they really are that dark, especially when it's a more mature plant.
Yess girl, new upload! 🍄🌿
🎉 thank you for watching :)
You have taken such good care of these ,they are very happy plants,💚🌵🌱☘️💚
Thank you so much 😊
Hope your frydek makes a comeback.
I have a Alocasia frydek and it’s doing amazing in PON.
My black velvet does that twisted lean too. The corms that I got from her have all leafed up and seem to be staying upright.....for now. My dragon scale is doing well this year too since I put him in pon. I live in the UK and can only wish that mine will get to look like yours
I’ve found that alocasias don’t like being in water too long. I’m loving your alocasia collection, it is my favorite to collect as well.
they like it. i have all mine in PON and semi hydro with self watering pots. easier to take care of and less pests
You don’t need a cabinet to grow any of these! I think light, watering, & fertilizer is more important than humidity for them honestly :)
❤❤
Love your hair!!
Thank you 🥺🫶💖
Great collection of alocasia you’ve got. I love them. Great work.
Thank you kindly :)
Wow I have the No ID alocasia as well and I am having the same exact problem with identifying it! I'm in Australia and got mine from a 'big box store' too. It was just labeled as alocasia and also has a picture of a completely different variety 😅
You have a fabulous collection. Look up the nycteris and longiloba purple. I want to at the Nycteris to my collection
I bought 2var. frydeks at the same time, one went in pon right away and the other in stayed in soil and were both in my milsbo and the one in pon immediately sized up and have had to pot up already. The one I left in soil was dropping leaves. I repotted it in pon and I need to size it up already.
My alocasia water props transition into semi Hydro (Pon) seamlessly, also from stratum to pon , happiest plants I own ❤
They are so gorgeous Fern 🤍✨
Alocasia Scalprum! It's stunning.
I second this! The scalprum is very cool 😎
Wow! Lovely Dragon Scale specimen!
The Jacklyn even looks like there is a new leaf in the way!
And the Jacklyn of the jungle haven looks similar to yours
OMG Fern you hair is getting so long! Gorgeous collection
You are looking absolutely fabulous in this video!
Interesting that all alocasia are not automatically spider mite magnets. Anyone else had no spider mites with dragon scale or black velvet?
Beautiful collection. What are those tags attached to the stems?
Really gorgeous collection you have growing in Canada. I am below the US on Dauphin Island, and we have great success in growing them outside, BUT I like to pot them up and bring them in. Question...I have a Sarian that was thriving in and out but I noticed the striking leaves began to lose color and have white web LOOK. I treated, cleaned and never found pests. 😢Nothing..then I cut all 5 leaves. Moved it inside to nurse back to health. Tis happening 😢😢😢again. Now what??
