Few years back, I was in hospital where they found a large mass in my stomach - consultant indeed thought it was cancerous (post-op biopsy found it to be an abnormally large abscess). For a whole night I didn't sleep a wink feeling sorry for myself and mulling over things I would miss out on with my Family. When my I called my boss to tell him the situation, he simply said a dead-pan voice, 'You're not allowed to die on my watch; you've too many deals to close and I expect your forecast in on time'.. In that moment, the gallows humour was exactly what I needed to snap me out of my funk and face things head on,

Simply ave you your number at start of the FY, trusted you to at least do your number, had your back when needed with both Co. Execs and Clients - basically no micro-management at all. Great guy.

It's why Irish wakes are traditionally loud & rowdy. People alleviate their own & others' pain by telling funny stories about the deceased. (And drinking, of course.)
As the joke goes “what’s the difference between an Irish wedding and an Irish funeral - there’s one more dead person at the funeral. Life is to be celebrated, gallow humour is so raw, you laugh before you know it.

Laughing is an enormous release of anger and sadness. My husband is a Marine and he was in Vietnam at the age of 18. He was quick witted and this got him into a lot of trouble but since he was good at everything he did the commanders loved hime but gave him a whipping just to make sure he was tough enough to do the job. He actually didn't mind it ... as it a constant thing.
While in bootcamp back then when they really beat you up my husband was in the barracks looking out the window and saw his peers carrying heavy boxes of artillery and they were struggling, and that's their job. And there was an NCO holding a clip board and diligently writing something (probably just to look busy). Anyway, my husband yelled out the window to his peers ... "can one of you help that NCO with his clipboard?" Well everyone dropped their boxes and couldn't stop laughing. It really was a ridiculous sight to see and to hear. The NCO turned bright red with anger because he was the brunt of a funny joke. No sense of humor. My husband did get in trouble but his commander tried not to laugh and that NCO was transferred somewhere else. You have to have a sense of humor or try when you are in a difficult situation or you will not be able to do your job.
Reminds me of when I was serving, back in the late 60`s. I was tasked with digging a latrine, while three NCO`s stood around harassing me and smoking cigarettes. I two star General came up, looked at me digging alone and the three standing and joking, so he grabbed a shovel and hopped down in the hole with me and started digging too! The three NCO`s freaked out, grabbed shovels and the hole was finished in no time! The General told me I did a great job, glared at the three NCO`s and then walked off, lol! Made my day a whole lot brighter, lol!
When I was in we had a buck sergeant that was put in charge of our platoon. The other higher ranks were off doing something else. Well, buck sergeant was strutting like a rooster and said " Well, as soon as I get relieved here I have to run down to the $perm bank to make my daily deposit". I didn't miss a beat and yelled out " What're you going to do sergeant... BELCH"? I was busy pushing down the ground for a while after that.

I jokingly ask for a discount when I'm out to eat and say, "Do you have a police discount?" They say no and I ask, "How 'bout a military discount?" They say no and I ask, "How about a mental health discount? I'm a moron!" The young people who have been somewhat entertained by the attempts suddenly turn deadly seriousand say under their breath, nervously, "You can't say that!" True story, sadly.
