As a "country bumpkin" thrust into a "big city school" in the '50's, I agree that you're on to something!! I quickly learned that the TRUE Bullies weren't those pounding on me. The TRUE BULLIES were the crowd that incited/provoked/encouraged those who were considered equally inferior, to pound on me. Like a scripted entertainment. When I fought back, and won, I was temporarily treated as a "Hero". When I refused to continue the show, by not engaging the next intended victim, I was mocked/dicarded as a "loser" for not fighting. Then labelled me as a "Loner" to relegate me back to pool of future bully-target. Once I identified that, I realized that the public is just a pod of clapping seals!!
@Michael Dalton,Sr growing up in Boston in the 70's there were endless bullying and bullied examples just as you describe...like a road raging car crash onlookers find it impossible to look away:)
