the US government actually gave reparations to japanese people that were in the internment camps during WWII. the US gov. waited until they all died out except 2 really old elderly people and then they held a ceremony in San Francisco and gave them a check for reparation. difference is, these two old elderly people were ACTUALLY in the internment camps and not relatives of.

It is estimated that 300,000 Indentured Servants "immigrated" to America and only 40% of them survived their servitude and were able to claim their freedom. The working conditions were horrible and many were very poorly treated by their "employers". Not all of them came willingly. England emptied their prisons and got rid of the poor by shipping them to the colonies as indentured servants. Many of these servants were young. One-third to half of the early settlers/immigrants were indentured servants. I have an ancestor who was an indentured servant, and fortunately he survived. His name was Thomas Attowell/Otwell and he came over in 1618 on the Bona Nova. He and other indentured servants helped build this country FIRST! Most of them died in doing so!

My family, on my fathers side, is descendants of slaves, and I came from a modest lower-middle household. None of us went to college, and the best decision I ever made was go to trade school. With commissions I make 6 figures. It’s undignifying asking for money. What I did was ask for an opportunity to make money, and I had to grind and grind, because you’re competing against many others who want what you want.

The original proud family was one of my favorite shows growing up. I come from a mixed family and watching the prouds on Saturday morning felt like visiting my cousin’s house. It included everyone, it was funny, it was new, it was innovative. The new one is straight propaganda disguised as a “children’s show”

Nobody alive today has met a slave but me. My grandfather was sold by the government of Sweden to a farmer because he was an orphan. He lived in the barn, got a bucket of table scraps for dinner. Didnt get to school. At 17 he ran away and came to America after earning enough to pay his passage in 1915...

I know a very old woman who met a person who was a former slave as a child, and the living woman was a child when she met the elderly ex-slave. Not sure but I think my grand or greatgrand was an endentured servant. My ancestors were here in the Colonial times, I never knew anything of immigrants during the 1800's.

Slaves did NOT build America , most of the people did not live in the South which was the only few states who held slaves.
America was built by hardworking Anglo Saxons, Europeans and indentured servants which were other European and Anglo Saxons , Chinese (who built the railroads) who decided it was worth the price of their freedom for a period of time to gain passage to the New World.
PS….Slavery existed in Northern and Southern Americas practiced slavery and human sacrifice long before and long after Europeans discovered this continent and came to settle here. It also existed everywhere on the Asian and African continents. White peoples have always been a minority on this planet, but a very successful minority, because their culture and societal structure and values.

Yeah, American was built by the hard work of many people, not just slaves, and in large part by ingenuity and inventions - most of which came from white culture.
At the risk of being "that guy," whether it was done by slaves, full-time hired hands, transient workers, or sharecroppers, planting and harvesting is not "building this country." Not everyone who planted tobacco or picked cotton was a slave. Is anyone shouting from the rooftops how field hands built this country? I don't think so. How much of what you see in this country even existed before 1865, let alone was the work of slaves?
I'm just surprised they didn't repeat those black history month myths about elevators and traffic lights being invented by black men. Filing patents for an automatic door opener (not the first) and a warning light to slow down (also a duplicate patent) are not the same as inventing the device they'd have been used with IF produced. Elevators go back to ancient Rome.

My family lost seven men some just boys fighting for the Union Army in the civil war. Some of their wives and daughters helped slaves escape the south and smuggled them into the north. My family has never asked to be paid for their sacrifices for people they didn’t know. They only did it because they felt that was the right thing to do. Do you think anyone would even consider that. I think a lot of our ancestors would be disappointed in the way we refuse to move on. Today nobody holds anyone back except their selves and I have no sympathy for them.

My people from New York didn't come over until the early 1900's. And African slaves did not build the railroad. It was the Chinese. Mohawk native Americans built bridges. Italian immigrants helped provide the labor for American factories and mines and helped build roads, dams, tunnels, and other infrastructure. The Irish manned the police in Boston for pennies a week. So this country was not built on slavery. Only a small segment of it. A thought: although the slave trade was horrendous - the black descendants here would not actually be alive if their forefathers were not brought to America. So why should they seek reparations? My immigrant grandparents came over and worked: in a sweat shop, printing press, as a custodian and other menial tasks. They never complained - just tried to give the next generation a leg up.

The majority of white Americans are not descended from people who lived in the pre-civil war South. They are descended from people who arrived from Europe in the huge immigrant waves after the civil war (like Italian Americans) or who settled in the northern states before the civil war. America's railroads were built primarily by Irish and Chinese immigrants with freed slaves making up the same percentage as in the general population. Slaves in the old South were farm workers and didn't build anything. What they contributed to the economy was largely destroyed in the war.
Your point is what bothers me most about this clip. It keeps repeating "Slaves build this country." And "Slaves build this country from Sea to shining sea." That's false . Flat out false. It was the European immigrants that build this country. The railroads mainly by the Irish and Chinese. Many men died making the canals. All you have to do is look at photos from the time to see who was working on the infrastructure.
@@donnamcadams5564 Y'all have the same point. The Golden Spike of transcontinental railroad was driven during the Civil War. No slaves were employed for that. After 1865, either Dem policies of sharecropping or Jim Crow laws restrained the former slaves, or they went to non Dem states and persued jobs that they could both do and succeed at. Success is only limited by self, and nothing else

It is inconceivable that European colonists could have settled and developed North and South America and the Caribbean without slave labor. Moreover, slave labor did produce the major consumer goods that were the basis of world trade during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries: coffee, cotton, rum, sugar, and tobacco.
In the pre-Civil War United States, a stronger case can be made that slavery played a critical role in economic development. One crop, slave-grown cotton, provided over half of all US export earnings. By 1840, the South grew 60 percent of the world's cotton and provided some 70 percent of the cotton consumed by the British textile industry. Thus, slavery paid for a substantial share of the capital, iron, and manufactured goods that laid the basis for American economic growth. In addition, precisely because the South specialized in cotton production, the North developed a variety of businesses that provided services for the slave South, including textile factories, a meat processing industry, insurance companies, shippers, and cotton brokers.
