  • As some of you know, the 2013 Triumph Daytona 675R is a fairly tall bike, despite its narrow waist and light weight. Wanting to get more foot on the ground, I took the seat to my local upholsterer, Ricardo's Auto Upholstery in Newhall, California.
    It cost me $100, but it was SO well worth it. The bike is transformed for this vertically-challenged rider.
    The bike is better everywhere when I'm on it;
    1. At stops, left foot finds the ground easier.
    2. Transfer from left to right is easier with less 'airtime'.
    3. It's easier to foot the bike on uneven or imperfect surfaces.
    4. Quick or unexpected stops with foot down are much easier.
    5.The lowered seat effectively raises the bars, relaxes the otherwise acute neck angle and is all around more comfortable.
    6. I feel more 'in' the bike instead of on it, which I really like. A lot of other riders have noted this preference too.
    7. No downsides with handling or cornering, and I don't need too much weight over the front at my pace.
    8. Pegs become higher, but they're still comfortable (stock pegs).
    9. Bars are effectively raised a bit, which is a plus.

    The seat looks great when he shaved it did he make it narrow in the front and did you sit on it before he recovered it .

      @BlueGram 13: Yep, I did a test-sit before he re-covered it, and despite it being sticky compared to a covered seat, it felt great.

    Just picked up the 675 and have to kinda scoot to one side when stopped, are you able to tip toe on both sides now with the shaved seat?

    Thank you!!!! I am 5 foot 3 and have a 2015 Daytona 675R, it is a scary thing to balance sometimes, bless you for the idea. I just need to find the right place to do it where I live.

    • @spacep0d
      @spacep0d  8 років тому

      @Nikki Duprey: You're welcome! Yeah, I think we both realize how tall this thing is...and keep in mind that if you have smaller feet, you're not getting the same amount of foot or toe down as someone with bigger feet. I'm a size 7 men's so yeah, not getting much help there.
      Good luck with the upholsterer. If you find someone who likes bikes and has done this, then bonus! Or, feel free to be the first. With my SV, the upholsterer I found had never done a moto seat but did a great job, and then did tons of them after I recommended him.
      Good luck. I'm curious to hear how it works out for ya once ya get it shaved.

    I’m 5’1” and I’m looking into buying a new bike. Knowing about this modification opens up the possibility of more bikes to consider.

    I had to pause this to say the black gear looks awesome!

    • @spacep0d
      @spacep0d  8 років тому

      @Coolchris158! Thanks! That's what I wear if I am just doing errands, or if I just want looser-fitting leathers for any reason. The 'space' suit is tighter and harder to get on and off, and I don't always want the attention it gets. But, that's my normal vlogging suit. I designed the black suit too, and it was made by Z-Custom leathers as well.

    Nothing more reassuring that being able to comfortably put both feet flat on the ground.

      @GTs Garage: No flatfooting for me (not even close) but getting one foot down should be reasonably secure. ;)

    Great to see you getting that much more enjoyment outta the bike by such a cheap mod.
    It's not something I need to consider but for smaller riders and a lot of female riders a real pro tip.
    You could make a living customising the gp boys real world bikes!

      @Sleepingdragon 1: Haha thanks. Well, I understand this whole short-rider thing very well now and shaving the seat is one of my first mods if a bike is too tall, or tall enough where I think it might increase my odds of a drop.

      +spacep0d Keep the vlogs coming bro. Now you've got the Triumph maybe you could share information on the Daytona with Yammie Noob? He would probably appreciate your advice as he's a new rider.

    I'm 5' 9" but my inseam is just under 30" (to the bottom of my foot) and I'd never even thought of taking an inch or so off a seat, that's a very good idea!
    That might save me a lot of headaches in the future :)

    • @spacep0d
      @spacep0d  7 років тому

      Yeah, it's way better than messing with suspension, and for the Daytona it puts you more 'in' the bike, which is much easier on the neck too.

      1. If what you are saying about all this experience is true... so sorry my dear, but the time pass and you learn nothing about a riders life, first thing about an experient rider; RESPECT, all GOOD RIDERS respect eachother, I never see free atacks like this coming from a Experient Rider, but if you pass this ten years into a bubble looking just for your belly bottom... come on man, please do not do things like this, it's a shame.
      2. Oh yeah, maybe you are a good rider on track... but you know that what you learn and use on track not ever you can use on roads in real life, always You need to repect your limits, bike limits, the limits of the road, variations of weather, animals, sand, oil, all possibilities what comes and goes wrong... and to add a plus... there is the other people in other vehicles, maybe sleepy, drunk, with headache, doing things that is not so clear sometimes.
      3. Turn off the troll mode, Try to be more gentil, come down of your high heels, love your bike, your life and enjoy the world.

    bro i am 5 foot and same 29" inseam i guess can also ride tall bikes by shaving seat!

  • @invisiblemon
    @invisiblemon 8 років тому

    That was the easy way. hard way is to make a new link. This requires machinery and skills. I did that to my ride a STR. Used an adjustable link for dimensions. Posted a vid on my channel years ago.

    • @spacep0d
      @spacep0d  8 років тому

      @invisiblemon: This was the least-invasive way. Are you saying you lowered your own bike? I wouldn't lower a bike and really don't need to. If I were like 5' with a 27" inseam, I might have to think about that. But, I've never had to lower a bike to-date and there are plenty of bikes I can ride without either lowering the bike or even shaving the seat. The Daytona just happens to be a bit tall.

    • @invisiblemon
      @invisiblemon 8 років тому

      Short answer yes.

    • @spacep0d
      @spacep0d  8 років тому

      @invisiblemon: Ah yes. Well lowering is a fantastic option if you need it, but I prefer not to lower bikes if I can help it. The seat shave makes that possible, though I also wouldn't mind a lowering link where I could lower the bike ever so slightly more since I don't need gobs of clearance.

      @Miles DeCoster: No mystery here, it will be totally fine. My SV seat was shaved way more aggressively and I was fine. Really, I never complain about seat comfort. My posterior has its own built-in padding. Pure muscle...and some padding. But even if it were at fighting weight, my ass never lacked for muscle/padding so seat comfort is a very low priority, with getting more foot on the ground a huge priority.

    $100 just for shave the seat? damn its super expensive

    • @spacep0d
      @spacep0d  8 років тому

      @Rozan abdurrahman:
      At first blush it seems expensive, but;
      1. Doing it yourself has some cost (tools, labor) and if you're inexperienced and jack it up, you're buying a new stock seat anyway and then you still need a pro to do it.
      2. The aftermarket seats cost gobs of money and don't lower you as much as this will, because too many people still expect max comfort from a 'lower' seat. Shaving bears no such encumbrance.
      3. Cheaper than lower, and no need to chop the kickstand or replace it. Plus, no loss of suspension travel.
      4. Getting your feet down better? Priceless.
      5. You're more 'in' the bike, and the bars are raised a bit with the pegs raised slightly too as a result. You won't get that any other way but for an expensive aftermarket seat. See #2.
