Three words! You are Beautiful.
When Paul Simon heard Disturbed perform this one at the Conan O'Brien show he tweeted it was his favorite version and not only that he further stated that this song now belongs to Disturbed!! That gotta be the highest form of compliment one could ever get!
48 year old country man and I get the chills and teary eyed everytime I hear this version.
This song is 58 years old. I listened to the original as a kid in the 60's - 70's. I became a Disturbed fan 21years ago and have loved everything they have ever done. But when they did this cover it blew me away. I loved your honest reaction. Wonderful to watch. Thank you....
This was first recorded by Simon and Garfunkel as a warning to us. This version sound like rage that no one listened to the warning.
stolen but still good c: xD
@@austinw678 Not stolen . . . it's a cover. Paul Simon knows about this and even promoted it on his own social media.
@@bitShft i meant elizabeth's comment i know this all that about the song 😂
This same comment appears on every single reaction to this song at least ten times. It was there on the first one, years ago. How about don't write it if you didn't come up with it?
@@austinw678You think you know me? I don’t plagiarize other people’s comments. I don’t need steal others thoughts. Nice, trying to drag someone. Get a life.
I love how you didnt stop every 10 seconds and making comments like other voice specialists. Just listen to the song and enjoy
Because she hasn't gotten copywrite strikes yet lololol
Hey at least those people aren’t talking while the friggin song is playing.
@Apostate Pauly i like to hear the reaction. They miss everything , the flow, when they stop every 2 second.youre right. I UNSUBSCRIBE. GOOD BYE
No, no, no! If you didn’t live in that generation you don’t understand the “true” meaning of this song. This song was about the Vietnam War. The electronics future we could have cared less about, that was your problem. The war was never ending. People hated it. Instead of soldiers coming home to praise for their service they were spit on. I could go into each line for the reasoning of it but it would take to line. Example: neon lights splitting the night, that is bombs lighting the sky. Simon even said in an interview many, many years ago. I know, I lived it.
Omg yes . thank you so much for that
And the people bowed & prayed to the neon god they made.. (I think of how people obsess over their smartphones with social media, heads bowed to the neon screen, people talking without speaking, *they are texting* people hearing without listening, *reading text messages* people writing songs that voices never share.. And no one dared disturb the sound of silence) And it reminds me of how my mother and father warned me and my siblings of the dangers of too much tv or smartphone time.. people become zombies in their own world of electronic reality.. This song really speaks to me. Lovely reaction!
Hello Leon💕, Wow you picked one of the best lines 💕
@@MrsPenPal Thankyou!
I think the lines, People talking without speaking, and, people hearing without listening, relate to the times also back then when the song was written. With todays technology, the meaning also relates. I think the deeper meaning is how people talk to others, yet talk of things that have no real meaning or value. People talking just to hear their own voice, or to impress others. People saying listen to me Isn't what i am saying cool, or does it impress you?. Other people are hearing without actually listening to what the other person is saying. More like, hurry up and shutup and listen to me!
You hit the nail on the head exactly everybody has their heads buried in their phones it controls their lives
I love the text commentary rather than pausing to speak. Best idea of a reaction I've seen.
Edit: I am aware that pausing is a way to prevent copyright strikes and I'm sure this isn't an original idea, but I still think it's the best.
Well said !
I totally agree. I was thinking the same thing. much better than pausing
Surely you know they do that to avoid UA-cam's copywrite infringement algorithms.
Concur whole heartedly
@@ChuckHickl I know why it just ruins it for me though
Each verse of the song could potentially have several layers of meaning, and your interpretation would be as good as anybody else's. At its core, however, the song is a social commentary about the inability of people to really connect with each other on an emotional level. Amazing how way back in 1964, Paul Simon saw that people were paying more attention to technology rather than each other. How much more do we worship the neon god today?!
You wondered about the boat. Disturbed took a bit more literal interpretation of the lyrics in this video. You see musicians picking up long-disused musical instruments. They had been silent for a long time. Then you see the songwriters in a place where no one could hear their songs. They were trapped in silence because there was no music for their songs. Then you see the musicians on a boat bringing their instruments and music to the songwriters. Their songs can now be heard. A detail that can be easily missed is the very last scene where you see the rising sun behind the boat. Finally, the long night of silence is about to be broken.
When he goes from baritone to tenor, I get goosebumps. A resonant baritone to that bell-like tenor, and done so smoothly.
Best reaction video ever. I really enjoyed how you didn't keep pausing it to interject. I loved watching your face. Great job! BTW, I can not listen to that song without being overcome by emotions.
YES, slowing the song down made it so much more powerful
Same here
@@allisoncampbell1631 and his voice! I love this rendition.
Oh Wow thanks Blake to hear you enjoyed this. I am happy this was recommended to me 💕
The first time I heard this on the radio it brought me to tears. I then HAD to listen to it nearly 100 more times to really take in all what he was saying. That in this informational age we have lost the ability to interact with each other whether through song and art or simply talking to one other. And he is almost rage grieving for it.
Hi Pims the Great thanks for sharing your experience with this song 💕. I totally get what you are saying.
I hope you know that Simon and Garfunkel wrote and performed the original decades ago. Back then, it was a warning of things to come. The original is softer with great harmony and a bit sad. I prefer the original.
Yeah Woody, I know. I also know that disturbed isn't the first to cover the song. And that Simon of Simon and Garfunkel said in an interview that this version is his favorite and has it on his playlist.
My beautiful child, that's all I have to say. You absolutely blew me away with your reaction. I saw it resonate with you. You have depth. You're amazing. I wish you the best!
Thanks Spackle💕
It's been said before and I'll say it again...
Simon and Garfunkel's version is a warning of things to come
Disturbed's version is anger that the warning was ignored.
oh my god, i never realized that, that makes this song so much more sad yet beautiful
100% correct
Yes listening to Disturbed version is like attending a funeral.
YESS! This feels like a desperate cry to hear the warnings, listen!
I was the one that said "Simon and Garfunkel's version was a warning of the future,
Disturbed's Cover is the pissed off angry version that the warning was ignored." And that was on Disturbed's channel the day it was released. Glad to see so many people still using it most are different than what i said but pretty close.
This was a number one hit by Simon and Garfunkel in the 60s, and an all time great song and this cover was better than the original which was phenomenal Now watch Disturbed: Down With the Sickness. You will not believe it is the same guy and group
Hi Paul welcome to the PenPal Family 💕Good to see you. Thanks for the recommendation 💕
I agree that this version of the song is way better than the original. The message is more powerful than when it was first delivered by Simon and Garfunkel!
This song is a response to hearing it on the radio for 50 years and still no one is listening still, just conforming.
people talking at each other instead of to each other. when Paul wrote this I think he was writing about the one way conversation the public was getting from the media. both tv and radio telling us how to think or what to think. the neon god to me was the television. we see it today how media corporations with competing agendas have divided us and that "silence" is the missing conversations we should be having amongst ourselves and finding our common goals and interests and not letting them define us and what we want. they're safe as long as we blame each other and don't look behind the curtain and find them pulling the strings.
they can only keep their power if we are divided.
Perfectly said.
The song is a warning to the fact that we, all of us are becoming more and more isolated in our own little world, thinking that what we see and hear from the media companies is the truth. We don't try to see for ourselves what is the truth. We don't interact with one another, we don't talk and discuss with our fellow man. And as a result, others are making all the decision for us and sometimes we don't even know it!
In my country, using the pandemic, our government has already passed several laws that have taken away civil and labor rights. Rights that were considered common sense for decades now! But because we are all concerned with ourselves and having a good times on our phones and facebook, and because they own the media companies, most of the people didn't learn about this for more than 3 months. And now its too late to try and stop it...
That move wouldn't have passed if the people knew about it. If we kept in touch with one another and knew what the hell is going on.
That's what this is about. Disconnection and a loss of touch with the real world.
I cry every time I hear this version of this song, his voice is so powerful .
Hi Annmarie💕

Extremely genuine reaction!
Extremely genuine comment 💕
You are the only woman on any reaction channel that is so sensual, yet appropriate and respectful. You are as beautiful as the lovely music that you react to, like this wonderful cover of a great song.

This song was written in 1963 by Paul Simon. DAVID OF DISTURBED SINGS IT WITH SO MUCH MORE FEELING AND MUCH MORE POWERFUL THAN Simon and Garfunkel did. To me this is way better. I am 62 years old. I am very glad that some of the younger people of today are taking time to check out more of the older music. And.that some of the newer groups are redoing them.
Social media is the well of silence, we get no tone, we are mesmerized by the (neon) light of our phones. We speak to each other without hearing
Exactly
after hearing the song
everyone else: awesome song!
Me: I have to go home, rethink my life.
Absolutely the best rendition of this song ever. I have never seen anyone sing any song with such clear emotion. Kudos to the arranger.
Hi Chase💕
Love your reaction!
Thanks De welcome to the PenPal Family 💕
Oh hon, your reaction was truly beautiful and genuine to such a powerful and emotional song. I appreciate that you simply listened!
Doesn't matter how many times I've listened to this, and how many reactions I've listened to , we are ALL SILENT, and all people who listening (to each other, with our texts) and not hearing. Be well. Be safe.
I love watching people react to this, because they're always struggling for words because they've got so many feelings inside of them when the song is over.
\
This song is indeed time stopping so intense
I love both versions of this song, but they put sooo much emotion in this. It's hard to beat
I've listened to the version a million times and it gives me chills every time.
Bravo, Bravo….Thank you for speaking without talking throughout the video!
Disturbed’s version hits all your musical senses…You see it, feel it, and hear it all in a powerful crescendo into finally uniting the music with the musicians…Brilliant!
Thanks for your well felt reaction!
I love watching reaction videos of songs that move my soul…However, this cover by ‘Disturbed’ is always stopped for reaction just as it’s building to a new level…99% of male reactors do this, and I have to be honest and descriptive here (wives will understand what I mean🫢)…
It’s like the act of physical love being expressed and you are in a rhythmic flow toward a beautiful climax and suddenly…
your 6 yo. is knocking on the bedroom door…🙄🫤
Thanks again for your beautiful reaction…

Watch his live performance from Conan. He is really putting his emotions in it
Hi Chris💕
Don't forget, the Conan video almost didn't happen. He had the flu and was running a high fever. They almost wouldn't let him outside the green room. But he insisted, and and that performance made this song viral. Simon & Garfunkel said it's their song now.
best reaction online ...no interuptions....no bla bla... very nice
They were nominated for a Grammy for this cover
Perfect video. No interruptions and your face expressed everything
Hi Rob💕
When you listen to this your entire life means nothing his voice is all there is phenomenal
Check out Simon & Garfunkel - "The Sound of Silence". Written by Paul Simon and first released by "Simon & Garfunkel" in 1964. Paul Simon heard this cover and linked it on his own social media, first time he has ever done that with a cover of one of his songs.
Even Paul Simon hated their original!
What I heard was that he hated the post-production changes that were made without his knowledge or consent before the recording was released.
@@aprilvoecks5877 The "auto-tune" was done by the Conan show when he sang it live there, not on his own studio version that is this version.
@@paulmartin2348. Sorry, I should have been more specific. I heard that Paul Simon hated the post-production changes (percussion, etc) that were made to the original release without his knowledge or consent. He didn't know about the changes until he heard it aired.
I don't remember where I read that, though.
@@paulmartin2348 I think April was talking about the post that was done on the original Simon & Garfunkel version, but I agree with what you are saying about the two Disturbed versions (Conan and studio). I really liked the accompaniment on Conan better, but I definitely like the vocals from the studio better.
this cover was done from a perspective of anger at how people ignored the warning from the original song... neon gods is a reference to TV, everyone prays to their TVs instead of communicating and instead of heeding that warning we just replaced TV with cell phones... David said it was supposed to portray his anger about this, he also said it was the hardest song he had ever sung... 680 million views for the video, amazing
Hi Jonathan💕
@@MrsPenPal hello MrsPenPal.. hope u r doing good and feeling good during this pandemic... love ur accent, where r u from?
David Draiman.....one of the best voices around!! Unparalleled! He can go from baritone to tenor....from clear as a bell to rasp and back ON A DIME!! Unbelievable timber and vibrato!! WOW!! Just beautiful !!
Best Reaction EVER, Great Girl (and SONG)
😇😅
Danke für deine Geduld beim zuhören 🎉
Ist der größte Respekt für den Künstler. Und ich kann das lied nicht hören, ohne dass Tränen fließen
This is my favorite rendition of this song. His interpretation truly brings out the true meaning of the lyrics. Simon and Garfunkel sang to alarm us, Disturbed sings to give us a final warning. You should watch the live performance on Conan when you get a chance. Amazing performance despite the fact that David Draiman had the flu.
This is now one of my favorite songs of all time.. and I can't believe its by DISTURBED... disturbed is like an extreme heavy metal band. The singer has an amazing voice
Hi Soph x💕. Do you know Simon & Garfunkel? I am sure someone will tell you more about them because I haven’t heard the original. But Sound of Silence is by Simon & Garfunkel originally. Someone actually told me after they saw my reaction that these original singers really loved Disturbed Cover of this Song. What are your other favorite songs of all time?
I love the extra care you put into your 'reactions': letting the music play and in post you add your comments graphically. That's a lot of extra work, and I for one appreciate it.
Thank you for the extra care!
Thanks!
I grew up with this song by Simon and Garfunkel in my childhood. My dad would listen to them. I was very familiar with this version and even today can get chills from it. I heard Disturbed's version a couple of years ago on internet radio and was.... floored. Yes, like you said, mesmerized. Wow! He has an an amazing voice and I love how he did this song. Very seldom do I enjoy remade versions of songs. This is one of them.
As far as the song, I believe? Maybe I'm wrong, Paul Simon wrote it. He writes beautiful poetic style lyrics. Thank you for your video!

deep powerful song
Great Reaction!!! I've said this before and I'll say it again... A 1965 ('64 first released; a bit of a story actually) The song was written by Paul Simon and re-imagined by Disturbed in 2015; datz 50 years!! For me, this is by far the best song and cover these past 5 years!! This song literally ambushes you... catches everyone by surprise! The powerhouse vocals, the amazing arrangement, etc... just a great song re-imagined by a Heavy Metal band... done right.
BTW: You've missed the band "PINK FLOYD" all together when reacting (ouch!!)... one of few bands that are The G.O.A.T.
- I myself suggest these EPIC 10 live songs; the studio versions are great too!! : 1) "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" 2) "Hey You" 3) "Us and Them/Any Colour You Like/Brain Damage/Eclipse" (all 4 parts) 4) "High Hopes" 5) "Time/Breathe Reprise" 6) "Dogs" 7) "Sorrow" 8) "Pigs (3 different ones)" 9) "Welcome To The Machine" 10) "The Great Gig In The Sky"
* "Comfortably Numb" (everyone has reacted to this one)(best guitar solo/stage design ever)
Anything from the live "Pulse" DVD (1994) would be phenomenal!!
One: I love how you waited ‘til the end of the song. Two: I love the subtitles explaining your thoughts. Three: love you have your commentary at the end. With that being said; I interpret this song to mean, those who continue with their silence condone the atrocities committed against their fellow man; and the words hang silent meaning the warnings are being ignored.
2020. Mrs PenPal, you are right on point. Your heart and soul were touched by TRUTH and the power of music. GR8 reaction....😎
Wow Michael💕
The first stanza Simon refers to darkness as being his "old friend" that he came to talk with because he was awoken in the middle of the night, of a nightmare that still lingers in his head, that gives his a considerable amount of distress. So bad that the awful visions were still flashing before his eyes as he is awake.
Second stanza begins setting the scene in which the dream took place: at night, him walking along the cobblestone road where he stops below the light of a streetlight. The cold chill runs up his back, so he lifts his collar to the "cold and damp." Just then, a blight neon sign lit up, showing that he, in fact, was not alone. But there were "ten thousand maybe more" all gathered in the cold night. The people who are talking, not speaking, are politicians, who are using false words to sway the population to vote for them, never revealing true intentions. The people therefore are hearing are not listening.
They are taking these words that are spoken to them in plain value, not examining or putting into depth anything that is said. Because of this, as referred to later, these politicians have formed a government that the people in fact voted for and supported until it began to act as a dictatorship. This seems that Simon is making an inditement to a large government that has taken away the freedoms of its people. A future for America it seemed with the rise of government in world affairs as in entered Vietnam. This "future America" has given Americans everything, and has the power the take it all away, hence the people "bow and pray to the neon god they made."
The Silence that is referred to is the silence of the people, afraid to say anything against the government for fear of death or worse. Simon, or whoever has had this dream, tries to bring people to speak out. Saying "Fools, you do not know, Silence like a cancer grows" that as more are afraid to speak, the more control the government takes and the less anyone will stand up to the new government.
As all hope is about to be given up, someone steps up and says to the crowd that the future they will hold has been written on the walls of subways and tenement halls. This is because this form of protest can be done anonymously, therefore no one can get in trouble for it. This begins the whispering in the silence of the people, and starts the beginning of a revolt.
You have such a lovely smile..
Thanks Spyder💕
The rest of your reaction aside, I give you full credit for having one of the most honest and beautiful smiles I think I’ve ever seen. Though I am not trying to detract from the rest of your reaction at all.
Thanks Peter
Best cover ever! Still cry a bit, after at least 50 listenings! What a singing range!!
I don’t blame you this song is memorable 💕
I'm glad you chose this version over the live show. In the live video, David was sick, and even though you probably couldn't tell unless you'd seen this one, there's a marked difference.
The original was a warning, way back in the 1960's, and this version has been called the rage that the warning was ignored.
You just reviewed the best song/artist combination in decades. Your stunned reaction says it all.
Wow, thank you!💕He is indeed exceptional
@@MrsPenPal it is amazing the talent that exudes from him. Back in my younger metal days I was all into Disturbed from Down with the Sickness. As I got older and civilized this Perfect, and let's be honest, perfect cover comes along. I flat out mocked it ahead of hearing it. My daughter just smiled and told me ahead of time to be prepared to have goosebumps and be stunned. My daughter knows me. I have challenged others before that there is no perfect combination of artist and song. Sound of Silence was made for Disturbed and the World is better because of it. First version was a light-hearted warning, this was a rage filled it is almost too late. Listen to me or else. I am glad you found this. Disturbed will not be your cup of tea, but if you listen to some of their work you will know exactly what I mean. Excellent review.
This was my very first time to watch one of your reviews and it will not be my last! Congratulations! You are one of the only reviewer‘s on the entire Internet that does not stop and start a song multiple times in the three minutes the song is playing for you. You sat quietly and attentive and took in the song without chopping it up 15 times like most do. I will continue to watch your videos if for no other reason than this! Kudos to you young lady! And then gave a great review!!!!!
Unfortunately, due to copyright blocks playing it all through like this is actually not the best practice. People could actually loose their channels for doing this and in the meantime their audience can't see their videos due to the blocks. I have videos like this no one can view them due to Blocks. Armand please, bare with those who paused during the song it is due to these types of penalties. Welcome to the PenPal Family 💕
I'm 57. I've known of the Simon and Garfunkel version for as long as I can remember. I considered it "OK" but it was not one of my favorites. When I first saw the version you watched, a few months ago, it brought tears to my eyes. Since then, I have enjoyed watching a lot of the reaction videos. Yours was different, though. You paid attention through the whole thing and didn't interrupt the flow. It almost brought a tear again today.
Awwh thanks. This song will stop someone in their tracks no doubt 💕
The only thing better than watching this video for the millionth time is the real and passionate reaction of a pretty Lady reacting to this song.
Wow thanks Tim 💕
Your facial reactions say it all !!! This is an amazing cover of a brilliant song, 1st done by Simon & Garfunkel warning us, if we don't change our ways we are headed for destruction, and Disturbs version is angry, because we didn’t listen to the warnings 😌 I always feel this song is like an amazing rollercoaster ride, slowly heading to the top, then almost crashing to the bottom...

This is a fantastic song that I grew up with along with other Simon and Garfunkel songs. Very popular! Many of your other commentators here have already hit on the meaning of the song and I concur, I think that this is written as an observation and even a prophetic song about how things are not as they always should be when it comes to human communication and interaction and we must beware lest it gets worse and worse as time goes on. And yes, we seem to have not learned the lesson well since the 1960s. At least not here in the United States and Europe. I love your reaction as I always do! You have a wholesome interaction with and relation to music and it comes out in every reaction video you do. I love the way you love the music and at the same time want to interact with the message it's communicating as well. You are fantastic as far as I'm concerned! Please continue to observe music. And here's to your next reaction! 🙏🙂❤️

This was written by Paul Simon of Simon and Garfunkle in reaction to the assassination of john F. Kennedy in 1963. I remember when it came out. Still resonates today.
I fully agree with the last comment. Best way to react
best reaction to this Disturbed hit song
It is probably the greatest cover song ever.
I recommend you now react to their song Voices to hear how diverse their range is.

Hi Maker💕
@@MrsPenPal hello
I love watching people get turned on to new music, and have been actively searching for a reactor that doesn't pause and comment. You are the first out of a dozen streamers that I have subbed to. Also, I like how you don;t do the fake "smash that, hit that " sales pitch for likes and subs. Keeo it up, I will be back.
this song was written almost 50years ago. Paul Simon wrote the lyrics, Art Garfunkle sang, it was about the Vietnam War protests.
I love it you don’t tinterupt the song, your face speaks more of a thousand Words😍

@@MrsPenPal Hi MrsPenPal !
He is an amazing singer
You beautiful girl, THANK YOU for actually listening to the entire song all the way through.
I see so many others listening to this song along with so many others, and they insist on stopping every 5 seconds, and talking about a subtle shift in chord for another minute before repeating.
You can see how the song affected you during and after, and the entire song has more meaning if you ride the emotions it steadily builds throughout. I did love your comments above it too!

The song was penned by Paul Simon of the duo Simon and Garfunkel from Queens in New York. Paul as a 21 year old wrote the song to help secure the a recording contract with Columbia records. Columbia first released the song as a simple arrangement of a folk song accompanied by an acoustic guitar in 1963. It was a commercial failure that didn't get listed on any of the charts. The band broke up with no further prospects of a contract, and Paul found work in small clubs in England and Europe playing folk music. This was the era when the Beatles were about to change the music industry forever, and folk artists like Bob Dylan could be considered the 60s equivalent of today's metal bands as far as rebels and society's outcasts and musical innovations went. Anyhow the song proved popular with a small sub-set of university students mainly along the East coast. Columbia released a remix of the song overdubbed with some electronic instrumentation, without the consent or knowledge of the original artists, as Columbia had the rights to the song and Simon and Garfunkel were no longer a working entity. The remix just kept climbing the charts, competing successfully with Beatle's songs on the national billboard and international charts. Simon and Garfunkel were rather quickly brought back together to produce another version of the song plus a full length album called "Sounds of Silence", and went on to ride the success of that and other songs mainly in the folk genre. "The Sounds of Silence" came to be a song representative of the 60s and about 50 years later it has come around again to be a representative song of another generation of another century. Not bad for a young musican from Queens to pen a song that speaks for multiple generations across time.
