I grew up with the original, but this version is so good. Someone said ' Simon & Garfunkel's version was the warning, Disturbed's is the reality', that's scary to think

The first stanza Simon refers to darkness as being his "old friend" that he came to talk with because he was awoken in the middle of the night, of a nightmare that still lingers in his head, that gives his a considerable amount of distress. So bad that the awful visions were still flashing before his eyes as he is awake.
Second stanza begins setting the scene in which the dream took place: at night, him walking along the cobblestone road where he stops below the light of a streetlight. The cold chill runs up his back, so he lifts his collar to the "cold and damp." Just then, a blight neon sign lit up, showing that he, in fact, was not alone. But there were "ten thousand maybe more" all gathered in the cold night. The people who are talking, not speaking, are politicians, who are using false words to sway the population to vote for them, never revealing true intentions. The people therefore are hearing are not listening.
They are taking these words that are spoken to them in plain value, not examining or putting into depth anything that is said. Because of this, as referred to later, these politicians have formed a government that the people in fact voted for and supported until it began to act as a dictatorship. This seems that Simon is making an inditement to a large government that has taken away the freedoms of its people. A future for America it seemed with the rise of government in world affairs as in entered Vietnam. This "future America" has given Americans everything, and has the power the take it all away, hence the people "bow and pray to the neon god they made."
The Silence that is referred to is the silence of the people, afraid to say anything against the government for fear of death or worse. Simon, or whoever has had this dream, tries to bring people to speak out. Saying "Fools, you do not know, Silence like a cancer grows" that as more are afraid to speak, the more control the government takes and the less anyone will stand up to the new government.
As all hope is about to be given up, someone steps up and says to the crowd that the future they will hold has been written on the walls of subways and tenement halls. This is because this form of protest can be done anonymously, therefore no one can get in trouble for it. This begins the whispering in the silence of the people, and starts the beginning of a revolt.

"The sound of Silence" is Simon and Garfunkel's masterpiece. I had serious doubts that anyone's cover could come close to the original. To my amazement the first time I heard Disturbed's version it didn't just come close but actually surpassed the original. I suspect that this will be one of those hotly debated subjects on which is the better version.

The original '64 version was bare, stripped down. The re-issue ('66?) added to the original vocals, but still sounds like a '60s song. The harmonies and songwriting are master class! The Disturbed version is awesome, vocally, hauntingly, and the video is very well done. Almost not fair to compare the two, so different and in their own time. What you can say is what a great song!

Just consider that this was written in the 60s and performed by Simon and Garfunkle and is still famous today. The song is so ahead of it's time. From when it was written I could sing it word for word. I'm 72 now and it's still meaningful and one of my favorites. Now I love this version too. It very well exemplifies the original meaning.

David Draiman is a classically trained vocalist. When Disturbed did this live on Conan O'Brien's show, the songwriter Paul Simon was watching. Paul loved it so much, he put a link to the video on his webpage. Tough call on favorite. I grew up in the 60's and the Simon and Garfunkel original was a classic from the start. Nobody really tried to cover it because of how good it was. But, I have to say Disturbed put a whole new angle on it - totally different from the original but what a voice and interpretation. Loved the kettle drums on DIsturbed's version.

The original was the subtle, soft vision of the story., a warning; Disturbed is telling us that we didn't heed the warning and will suffer the consequences. You don't listen to the Disturbed version, it reaches out, grabs you by the neck and pulls you into the story. It is brilliant and David is a very, very talented singer.

One of the things some know os that he is not only a cantor but comes from generations of Cantors. He did get professionally trained to preserve his gift but what really got me is hearing that in defference to his heritage, he has never been tattooed!
He has piercings but removes them when around his grandfather and family out of respect for him. So no only does he have a magnificent instrument vocally but is a humble respectful family man.
Watch the Conan live which I think is actually better. He had been in the hospital with the flu the night before and is sitting while he sings because he still had fever and yet delivered an absolutely EPIC performance with a full orchestra.
Definitely a much watch just for yourself.

Both versions bring their own something to the table. S&G's version is more contemplative and let's you focus on the lyrics (to my ears anyway) while Disturbed brings a drama, beauty, suspense and power that only David Draiman could yield. I get a natural kick out of them both.
Also, its funny that you think Draiman sounds like Phil Collins in the high registers. Disturbed also did a cover of a song by Genesis called "Land Of Confusion". As a Genesis fan, I'm naturally hooked on the original but the cover gives that song an extra set of teeth that makes me grin like a maniac when i hear it!
Great reaction as always Angela! Stay being beautiful inside and out! 😊🧡👌

This was by far the best cover of this song. I grew up listening to the original, so I was skeptical of listening to another version, but I loved it the first time I heard it when it first came out in 2015. From someone who grew up with the original, the best way to compare is to state, "They are both great," and while the lyrics are the same and, for the most part, the melody is the same, there is one area where he created a very slightly different arrangement which works PERFECT for the metal version heard here. His arrangement in 2% of the song changes the feel of it but does it without disrespecting the original. Beautiful performance, beautiful arrangement! They are both equally great.

Several hardcore bands have been covering older songs, going back to Metallica doing "Turn the Page" and Whiskey In the Jar" on Garage Inc, to Me First and the Gimmie Gimmes doing tons of them such as Cat Stevens' "Wild World", and Children of Bhodam doing "Oops I Did It Again". Thanks Angela!
    Comparing the two isn't fair...
David Draiman and Disturbed took a complete work and remade it from the ground up... with more than 50 years to do so.
Having said that, the remake by Disturbed, is a POWERFUL reminder that we ignore our past at our peril.
IMO, the original referred to a difficult period of time the country faced. Television (the neon God) sucked the life out of the 'family' unit. Out of the community. Then out of the country. By replacing first the family dinner with the 'news' then replacing family time with Must See TV...
Now we're being pulled irretrievably apart by the new neon God, the cell phone.
Disturbed took the quiet warning that was Simon and Garfunkel's version and ignored and blew our hair back with the consequences of ignoring the warning.
Draiman will not be ignored as easily as Paul Simon.

I grew up with S & G and with horrendous, cheerful covers of this song. I never thought I would hear a cover that GOT the lyric. Disturbed does that. However, the original S & G--and I mean the original stark two-voices-and-an-accoustic guitar version--is the one that gives me chills. The recording from their Wednesday Morning 3 AM album has Simon (when you're wearing headphones) in one ear and Garfunkel in the other with their voices blending in perfect harmony. The single version (with drums, bass, and guitars added) is special to me, too, because it was the way I first heard the song. (I was 4 when the single came out). But I would highly recommend reacting to S&G's 1982 "Concert in the Park" version of "The Sound of Silence." It is not as technically perfect as they could be, but it is powerful. For me, the Disturbed version's drama and in-your-face volume that's almost like shouting distracts a little from the lyric. The "Concert in the Park" version demonstrates the power of whispering. That becomes clear when you watch the crowd's reaction. There were over a half million people at the show, and they became silent, contemplative, and entranced. But you can't just listen to that version. You have to see and experience it. 🙂

I hate to say it but this guy can sing rings around Phil collins. It's not even close. Not even in the same ballpark. I like both versions so much and of course they are separated by decades but when both of them are just so good in the cover makes it unique and special to that performer or band, I don't even see them as comparable. It's apples and oranges at that point. Another great reaction. I swear I could probably watch you reacting to someone reading a phone book and I would still be mesmerized, laugh. You're just so engaging and observant and empathetic, it's irresistible and endearing for sure.

What makes a great cover version of a song? It's tough to come up with definitive rules because taste in music is so subjective. Most would say it is where the artist doing the cover puts such a unique spin on the arrangement and so much effort into the recording that they make it their own. Works for me. I am waiting for Angela to drop her last couple of songs before I make my last comment on the topic.

The first time I heard the last part of this, it was "Wait, what? What was that? I want to hear that again!". 2nd time it was "I think I like that." Then I had to find out who it was and track it down - and I have not listed to the original since. The original is excellent. This is stellar.

I am always a fan of originals over remakes, but this version blows the original out of the water. It's not even close. Great reaction hon.❤

Great cover reaction my dear!!!! Garfunkel the original writers and performers were telling us back in the 60’s when I first heard the song to get our shit together or the future won’t be pretty and David’s version is saying oh well the shit has now hit the fan!!!!! Just saying. So says Austin Tx!!!! 😍😍😍🍸😎

This is an absolutely amazing cover! There are also two a capella versions of this song - one by Pentatonix and one by Peter Hollens with Tim Foust from the group Home Free.

This utterly blew me away when I first heard it and I was a huge Simon and Garfunkel fan at some point in my youth and I still like it today although I rarely listen to it. Another fantastic cover if you haven't already done it is the Elvis Presley live I believe Vegas version and it's a cover of their song Bridge Over Troubled Water. It is such a magnificent performance and its operatic near the end and it's a real tearjerker. His arrangement on that is insane. And not a lot of people realize that he did his own arrangements of all these songs. Even when he had that huge band and backing choirs.

Oh yeah, I forgot to say, when Paul Simon heard Elvis perform Bridge Over Troubled Water at Madison Square Garden in New York City he was blown away and said something along the lines of, Well, it's his song now!

This is a great tribute but the original, with its harmonies and impact in the turbulent 1960s, is a masterpiece. They are the songwriters who crafted this masterpiece. This is just a very good and interestingly haunting cover.

Funny you should say Phil Collins. Disturbed also did a cover of Land of Confusion, by Genesis. It was also awesome, and he sings like Phil's evil twin.

David sings for a heavy metal band. Simon liked this version. The original was the warning given and this is the warning unheeded. I like the version better.

Simon & Garfunkel is a softer version but quite good. This song has been covered numerous times. But I believe Disturbed did it best. Even Simon posted that this song belongs to David now. Talk about impressing the writer/singer of the original!

I too grew up with the original version, and it was good in it’s own right. This version by Disturbed is much more powerful, but I think that it needs to be that way as the warning is nearly imminent in today’s world. We are definitely much closer to the edge now than in 1964/‘66. I like Disturbed’s version more, it sends chills up my spine everytime I hear this, right where he turns up the power in his voice.
Pentatonix also covered this song, and it was an acapella take on Disturbed’s metal power version. And it is very good as well. I highly recommend that you listen to that/ check out their video as well.
