    Once again you manage to solve the apparent mystery of Italian possessive adjectives like no other teacher or book has ever done for me in the past. You truly do simplify grammar rules to the point where a learner can appreciate that they are not either as intricate or complicated as they may seem at first 😊

      @@ItalianTeacherValentina I do have a question though. If we were to say “questo è il nostro cane”. And if you wanted to clarify if it’s female, would you be able to say “la nostra cane”?

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  3 роки тому

      @@Bramz26. Una buona domanda! You could say "la nostra cagna", as "cagna" is techically the noun for "female dog". But "cagna" is not very much used as it can also be an offensive or bad word (when used for humans". So we usually say "il cane" for both female and male dogs, and then we specify "è una femmina" (it's a female) or "è un maschio" (it's a male) if needed.

    I have a question, can you explain why an article is needed in Italian when in English it is not. For example in "la mia casa". But in English you would just have "my house" without the article. It would really be helpful to get a clear explanation on this. "Grazie mille".

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  Рік тому

      As I was saying in my reply to your other comment, the general rule is that we do use the article all the time, even with possessive adjectives. So we just say "the my house" literally. It's just a difference between the two languages. There are some exceptions, one of which has to specifically do with possessive adjectives and I talk about it (with examples) here: ua-cam.com/video/s1M7IQRcP3s/v-deo.html
      Hope this helps!

    Great video on possessive adjectives, Stella. You make Italian language look very easy to learn but... Now I need clarity here please, why "mamma mia, and not "mia mamma"? Two why at times see "la casa mia" instead of "la mia casa"? Now, "tocca a te". Mille grazie.

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  3 роки тому +1

      Ahah! Ok, è il mio turno! :D 1) "Mia mamma" is used when you want to say "my mother". "Mamma mia" is an expression, similar to "Oh my God". 2) Usually, when we put the possessive adjective after the noun, is to give it more emphasis, to make a point, like for example when you are quarreling with someone and you want to really make a point that it is YOUR house, not theirs. Hope this helps!

    Salve Valentina, I have just started to learn Italian and I love your videos! I am also listening to an audio book, were I just finished the possessive adjective session. When practicing, one combination got me a bit confused, and I hope you can help me. I was asked to translate "my car" using the word "auto" in Italian. Thinking "auto" was a masculine noun, I translated the sentence to "l' mio auto" but I see that my use of the article l' is wrong in this sentence.When given the answer it was "la mia auto". And if I am guessing, the article changed to la, because we can't use l'. But is it correct that the possesive adjective changes to feminine as well? Are there specific rules for possesive adjective when the noun start with a vowel? (My first language is Norwegian, so I apologise for any misspelling or other errors).

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  Рік тому +4

      Ciao Elisabeth! Yours is a great question. First of all, the exercise was a tricky one, since auto, despite ending in "o" is a feminine noun. Why? Because is the abbreviation of "automobile", which is the complete word for car, and is feminine. So the article needed to be feminine because the noun is feminine. As for the article l', it can be used with both masculine and feminine nouns, but they need to start with a vowel. So if you just needed to say "the car", "l'automobile" would be correct. But since you are adding "my" and so the word next to the article begins with a consonant ("mia") you need to swich to "la".
      Hope this helps!
      If you need further help with articles (they can be confusing!), I've recorded a 1-hour class on them, with plenty of explanations and examples. You can purchase it on my website, here's the link: www.valentinastellatutor.com/register/live-class-with-valentina-stella-12march22/

      Benvenuta! No, for every other case except the one that I explain in the video you need to use the article, so it's "Le loro scarpe"

    Hi Valentina, these lessons sre so helpful. Can I just ask, when it comes to gender, do you have one for someone who is non-binary?

    • @ItalianTeacherValentina
      @ItalianTeacherValentina  Рік тому

      Grazie mille, Rebecca! I'm glad you are finding them helpful. No, in the Italian grammar we only have two genders, we don't have another one (eg. a neutral one as in Latin).

    Ciao Valentina, mi piace il tuo canale molto.
    Nel tuo video, hai detto "la mia casa" ho pensato che piu ragione con casa "la casa mia". Boh?. Grazie mille.

      Sono contenta che ti piaccia il mio canale, Paul!
      è vero che gli aggettivi normalmente vanno dopo il sostantivo in italiano (es. "una casa grande") ma ci sono delle eccezioni.
      Una di queste è per gli aggettivi possessivi, che vanno PRIMA del sostantivo. Ecco perché "la MIA casa" è corretto.
