  • Join us aboard Athena this week as we (hopefully) solve Ava's visa issue and bring the boat from Ijmuiden to Scheveningen in the Netherlands.
Here is the link to the chopper Ava bought in Denmark. It is triple the price on Amazon.com, but I did see a lot of similar options for a more reasonable price that look like they would work great! www.imerco.dk/eva-solo-green-...

There are more marinas than you can shake a stick at in the Southampton area. A couple of points though, if you haven't already I'd start making enquiries. That area is super popular and you may have trouble finding a berth. Further west along the coast, you have Weymouth, Dartmouth, Torbay and Plymouth or even Falmouth. The latter two are ideal jumping-off points to cross Biscay. Wherever you end up, try not to admit that you are liveaboards, most marinas don't allow it "officially" but if you keep under the radar most will turn a blind eye. Just keep your options open.

Thank you for adding the cooking part!! Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the DIY, but I’m always curious what people buy, how they store it, how they prep it, what they cook, how they do their menus, etc. Back when we did LONG sails, we would take all of our canned goods, remove the labels, write the product in sharpies, then dunk the can in varnish to keep the can from rising in the salt air. We also dunked eggs in wax to make them air tight. There is a really cool solar pot that you bring everything to a boil, then put it into the solar pot and let it sit for the day. Like a crock pot, but with no power needed. When you get ready to cross the Atlantic, I would love to see your menues!

If you would like somewhere with high quality showers, laundry etc and in a very pretty area with good walks, I can recommend Chichester Marina, it is a really nice laid back place to stay. Lymington is also good. There are many other marinas in the Southampton area, but Chichester is one of the best. The only downside is a 45 min trip through the harbour from the Solent to the Marina. But it is a very picturesque harbour / River. If you end up in the Solent area and you need a hand with something, give me a shout.
P.S. Brighton, in my opinion, would not be a great place to spend the winter. The town is OK, if a bit commercial, but the Marina is a big concrete block with rather too much attention and by product from the seagulls
    .

Look at the two marinas in Ipswich harbour.
A fine large old town walking distance from the boat. Excellent chandlery. Foxes marina just along the tidal marina also.
Train into London, Stanstead airport close by.
Easy sail from Holland and good crossing points for the shipping lanes.

Ipswich is also going to be cheaper than the south coast and has everything you need in a small town. As someone who worked and stayed there for a number of years the only downside is that the beer is crap.

The other advantage of Ipswich is that not only will you be on the Orwell river, but you are very close to 6 other lovely cruising rivers for east coast river hopping, rivers ore &alde, Stour, Colne, Blackwater and Crouch, not forgetting the Thames oo "Athena goes to London" - What could be a better back drop than Tower Bridge as you turn starboard to enter St Katherine's dock (but not cheap), if you get to Rowhedge on the rive Colne, I'll buy you a pint in the Ye Olde Albion - og jeg taler også dansk!

    Hi guys!
Two suggestions to avoid ‘bumping around’:
    1. When moored in a marina (like IJmuiden) when your fenders are sqeeking: set you lines as long as possible for and aft.
    2. When motoring against the wind (towards Scheveningen): hoist thr main set with the 1st reef and motorsail clause holed (15-20 degr) towards your destination. It goes faster and with less slamming the waves.
    Enjoy Holland!

Instead of making a cooked roux next time make a beurre manie (or raw roux) which is two parts butter to one part plain flour. Combine the two ingredients (do not melt the butter just leave it out to go soft). With the soup on the simmer, gradually add knobs of the beurre manie and whisk or stir into the soup until the desired consistency has been achieved. Continue to simmer the soup/sauce until the flour is fully cooked.

Falmouth is very peaceful, away from the rat race cities and surrounded by stunning countryside.
It has the mildest of winters with plenty to see and do including the national maritime museum.
There are an abundance of sheltered marinas all with super markets near by, boat yards and chandlers.
The stunning sub tropical isles of scilly are just a hop away and well worth a visit.

Mads, Eva. If you are intending on staying in the Southampton area for several months then I would recommend the Ocean Village Marina, right in Southampton. It is very sheltered and is not affected by any tidal streams, unlike all but one of the other marinas in the Southampton area. The marina also has the added benefit of local shops, very good transport facilities to the local area and beyond and many many restaurants. The city centre is in easy walking distance, as are most other locations/businesses you might need.
The marina is also accessible 24/7 and is very safe and friendly.
For your projects there are numerous local businesses that can assist, including a very local stainless steel engineering company, which I highly recommend from person experience. There is a very good chandlery in the near-by sister marina (Shamrock Quay) where you will also find sail/rigging companies, marine electronics etc etc.

Lymington is a great town, with a large boat scene with chandleries…good pubs, and on the edge of new forest too. Trains to Southampton or London from the town. Plus Solent sailing is great.., just nip over to the Isle of white

I would recommend looking at marinas on the Isle of Wight. They're much cheaper than the mainland, the Isle of Wight is really lovely, and it's easily accessible to Southampton by ferry that takes just 25mins.

Gosport, over the water from Portsmouth, then you can use you Boat the best chandlery on the south coast. Also great rail and road links from Portsmouth. Not to mention HMS Victory, His Warrior, the Mary Rose, Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, the D dat museum (and many more) so many great pubs and restraints and the isle of wight

Shamrock Quay in Southampton was a great marina with all facilities nearby. Quite expensive though. Gosport was a little cheaper but had less facilities. Brighton is also a nice area to stay for a while.

Britaly stayed in Chatham dockyard. It’s got it all, history, restaurants, DIY, marina shops as well as supermarkets and only 45 minutes to London by train or car.

Lymington is a lovely place… Kathy and I did our day skipper practical there at Sea Jay Sailing School in 2017 and it had great facilities and the town is pretty and the Isle of Wight also has some good marinas…

Also recommend Haslar Marina in Gosport- near Portsmouth so not quite Southampton however you’re directly on the Solent, great shopping restaurants and bars in Gunwharf - I always think the marina has a really nice vibe and staff are friendly.
Great video, thanks soo much for sharing your adventures- good luck with all the red tape! Hope you enjoy the winter in 🇬🇧 🥂

Oh, and Lymington will be a lovely place to spend Christmas
Considering somewhere further west? Dartmouth, Falmouth, Salcome great spots too

All of the spots mentioned so far have their own charms! There is a mix of affluent leisure spots (Salcombe, Dartmouth, Southampton, Cowes, Fowey) and places steeped in Naval history, industry and all sorts of fantastic castles and fortifications (Portsmouth, Plymouth, the area around Portland Bill).
My suggestion would be to spend your time travelling down the coast, honestly. You will not come away from it feeling you have wasted a trip. My favourite trips have been around Weymouth / Portland and between Plymouth and Salcombe, or the other direction to Fowey.
