Mads sounds like he is battling a cold 🤒
Until next week….Sea Yoo !!
Mads, WHERE are you hiding all of your copious tools so that Ava doesn't get tempted to throw them and you all overboard? Give us a quick tour of the "master mariner tool crib" in an upcoming video!!!
ONWARD as ever with the TOP QUALITY CONTENT!!! THANK YOU BOTH ALWAYS!!!
For long-range wifi nothing beats heigth of the antennas. You can't change where the onshore ones sit, but placing yours on the top of the mast will make a huge difference.
Next week, Athena autonomously sails to Gibralter while sending daily updates to the crew who forgo seasickness from crossing the Bay of Biscay.
Gosh Ava, just for the self satisfaction factor I would have grabbed a stack of stickies and wrote "Insulation" on one and then stuck it in the "Done" column.
You could even do that for trips to the grocery or marine store, post office, cooking dinner, washing dishes, etc. But I wouldn't get too carried away with it.
Why not ?!? They ALL are part of the endless list!
Mads, please do a lightning strike protection video, you must be thinking about that with all your expensive electronics onboard. I would love to see your opinion on the subject. Thanks
It's not just the electronics. Lightning can damage hull, mast and rigging too. It can also can start a fire.
Mads, FYI. ... The 10 inch Filter Housing / Cartridge is standard in Canada, US and Mexico. 5 inch is available but not as easily. Some Asian manufacturers and other specialty manufacturers try to trick you into calling their housings 10 inch, but really only their filter cartridges will fit/work
Even though I didn’t understand most , maybe all, of what you were talking about I still enjoyed watching your videos
Yours truly
Technically Challenged
We keep a $15 Brita pitcher in our galley for drinking water. Works fine for us.
With so many gadgets, Athena looks like the Starship Enterprise. "Beam me up Scotty". Seriously, very nice job Mad & Ava!!!
The filters usually need to have 2 to 5 gallons of water pass through them before they are working at maximum cleaning
For future reference, shrink sleeve, then tape on top, for the antennas. Makes removal, and subsequent cleanup easier. Alternatively, you can altogether ditch the tape, and just use shrink tube and a little bit of dielectric grease to positively displace any water that might seek to ruin your internets.
You guys always make me smile. Sold my house in September, currently in Mexico for a bit, but, will be boat shopping soon. One thing I did pack before leaving the US was my Sail Life sticker, keeping it for my new boat. 👍
My day is now complete. Thanks Ava and Mads
I saw one dodger set up with "track/zipper" they could use for full rain curtains or a solar blocking no see um mesh to reduce UV exposure and bugs in super sunny tropical places. I am older now and spent a lot of time in sun. Skin cancer and cataracts are no fun. Maybe comment helps. I hope so but you always make good choices and can plan for changes later once you test your new dodger out. Always a joy to watch. Thanks for another fun video.
My wife and I noticed a nice scarf, Ava!. Nice video and great to get back to DIY mode.
I enjoyed this channel for a while. Now it's all electronics, all the time. Routers, wi-fi, more routers. Never been a troll but this has became predictable. More comms and bandwidth, every episode. Wish you all very fun travels.
Your both truly beautiful
Thank you both for sharing
☀️🙏🌟⛵️😊😊🌎
Cheers guys.
Have a good week.🙂
Lovely episode, folks!
Yet another great episode 👍🏼👍🏼
Looking forward to next weeks DIY episode because Mad said he ordered a lot of material to close smaller tasks :-) LOL
I am glad finally more people are subscribing to your blog as really you should be in the millions range. Nice to see you soon will be on your first million. Thanks guys.
Thanks for sharing . Your computer knowledge helps greatly for us novice. Travel safe
Another amazing experience
I've been working on a long range wifi setup using a Yagi directional antenna and a 2 axis gimble (pan and tilt). Essentially a Raspberry-Pi controls the servos that "lock" onto the wifi signal and keep the antenna pointed exactly at the Wifi AP (This is done through signal differentiation and a solid state 3 axis gyro / accelerometer board) This would correct for the motion of the boat while at anchor. Theoretically this would give you miles of range (LOS) with this type of antenna VS. an omni-directional one.
Hello! I am watching you since Athena was a beginning project. How incredibly is the evolution, how was and how it is right now. Incredible! 😊👌💪💪
You guys haven’t broken the mould of what sailing life really is. And that is doing boat work in exotic places. Well, the exotic part is yet to come. 🤣
You’ve clearly not been to Southampton on a Friday night yet. 😁
Great video, just be aware of the power consumption of your boosters, we have them on the TV antennae circuit so they can be easily isolated, you'll need to do this on long passages. You need a small dehumidifier for condensation, they work wonders, particularly on aluminium and steel hatch and window frames, which can drip like mad. Well done!
Check to see if the 10" length filter bowl will fit the same top assembly. FWIW, 10" is all over Canada. I've never seen a 5" in the flesh and a lot of houses use 20" units. The gauges are definitely worth it.
Your boat looks great, but that center island is an awesome stand-out feature.
The coolest thing about it is it covers a diesel tank and a fridge.
Type N connectors are very nice. I have used them for many years.
If you do go out sailing and the weather is reasonable don’t miss staying overnight in Newtown Creek on the north coast of the Isle of Wight. Lovely and peaceful nature reserve where you can pick up a buoy or anchor. Pete Sanders in Lymington makes great sails.
Looking good !
Awesome work! 👏🏽💯✅
6:31 fingers crossed worked out!
Clamping tool was correct for the job! 😉👏👏
Another great video you two .
Great video.
I like your videos thank you
The pressure gauges seems to be just two more leaking points… would recommend documenting the replacement date and set a fixed interval and using a ppm meter to measure water quality on a regular basis.
Great video on floor installation it makes me want to do the same flooring on my Catalina 36 located in Escanaba Michigan on the northern most point of the lake. With winter coming we are getting ready for Iceboating. In future episodes it would be nice to hear about Eva’s background as Michiganer. Love the videos.
Stay healthy and we'll see you next week.
As always I enjoyed the content.
Great video
Doing well. Take care.
Please, for the love of all that is holy & for the respect of the angry pixies....use some dielectric grease (100%silicon marine grade). Non conducting and keeps water out, forever. Will change your life.
Thanks for another great episode and keep up the hard work.
I'm on the fence with my opinion on this subject. I think it's not such a good idea, I live on the coast and got fed up with corroded connections on my motorbikes wiring loom. Cleaned them up nice, reconnected then covered in dielectric grease. 6 months later the places subject to heat and vibration just caused more problems from the compound either melting slightly or working its way into the connectors - especially if you need to start unplugging and replugging something. Non conductive grease working it's way inside connectors or switches turned out to be more of a pain to diagnose than an obvious green and white furry build up around a terminal.
@@TheRattyBiker i am in NE Ohio, and they salt the hell out of the roads. I use marine grade dielectric grease. I fill the connectors with it. It makes service a dream, no corrosion on the portion that counts. I am confused when you say it works itself into the inside (that is where it belongs). What do ya mean sir?
Hope you had a great weekend
Love the content.... pretty informative....
great vid, take care
It’s coming together but it’s a work in progress.looking forward towards next videos.
A scotch tape tab on the end of the sim card makes it very easy to remove on those kinds of slots.
Very important for your to do list…a vivid tropical pattern pillow for that nav station.
Looking at that beautiful counter on the galley island, you should build a little plywood cover for it to protect it when you want to use it as a work surface. You could stow it in the technical compartment when not in use.
check the sailing with the Wynn's video on sails before you order. Another great vlog!
You can immediately tell you are in god old Blighty, as you mention the rain in the first minute of the video :-)
Love your videos !
The adventure continues
Do you have a plan for lightning protection ?
With you being a huge gadget guy, you better not go to tropical Panama !
Many many yachts there get all their electronics BBQ'd with lightning.
Cheers
Sail On 😀
Great explanation and walkthrough of your 4G/WiFi setup! Now I just need to get myself a boat so I can apply my new knowledge.
Mads.... what about some fiddles around the kitchen island? Cheers
Fantastic video as always.
I have a task for your todo list. The wooden "slide-in doors" from the cockpit down into the boat. :) haha... They could use a fresh sandings/varnishing :P heheh
Great video as usual. I'm a little bit puzzled though, you said earlier you need to strengthen the arch and I assume you will need to weld additional supports but still you pull new cabling through with new connectors pressed on. Feels like you are collecting extra diy work for later when you will need to redo the cabling...
Great progress guys. Two recommends - Yorkshire Gold makes a better cup of tea and order your sails locally - see the horror story of Gone withe Wynns video recently uploaded video.😳👍⛵️
OMG! I hated to hear the GWTW team got bamboozled! Dang shame!
Nice video
If you haven't already, definitely go to the submarine museum - it's only a few minutes walk from the marina 😊
I was just about keeping up with your onboard electronics but falling behind a little after this episode but still very impressed and a tad jealous. By the way when in Southampton drink the beer not the water.
I enjoyed the, "lesson" on the Locomarine Router setup. My wife and I will be traveling with a 5th wheel RV in remote parts of the American west after next year and I can see value in something like that for swapping networks on the rare occasions when we are hooked up and not dependent on cellular network for data. Athena is going to be a cutting edge example of electro-whizbang stuff by the time you turn west across the Atlantic.
Love your videos, Mads. Why not mount the antennas on top of the mast???
Wow, that router on it’s own is mighty pricey! 😳
Using Starlink for timely uploads or even livestreams in the middle of the ocean would be an incredible application of that technology. I'm very impressed with your forethought Mads!
We got Starlink a couple of weeks ago. Compared to our woeful 3/4G connection at 2Mbits, it's streets ahead. We are SE Australia country and there are trees, but we managed to get a good sight. I does drop out occasionally, but so good when it's working, which is most of the time,
For now Starlink is only for stationary use, so in a mobile environment (like a boat) it won't work yet.
I see you used speed fit I was the production factory manager there for 16 years!
just when I thought one couldn't add any more electronics - you proved me wrong ... still no coffee maker!
For the issue of condensation, check out the video from the channel. ...cruising lealea. ..video is called ...a warm dry boat.... they have found a product that was recommended by the local Alaskan fishing boats. It is an additive you can add to any paint. I think it is called Insuladd. They used a household latex paint, and it has solved their moisture problem.
A warning today from the channel. ..gone with the wynns....regarding sails they ordered, paid for but never received. It's worth a look before you place your order.
Love your videos
I was surprised to see you on Uma's Instagram! Hope you and Dan got to talk a lot of DIY (and spectra watermakers)
Dan the know it all will Mads what he is doing wrong
Hello Mads
I work with 4G in Norway. Just so you know, you can calculate the theoretical radio horizon with X as antenna height with various online calculators. 4G masts are usually between 10-30 meters tall depending on the structure or mast they are mounted on, some are higher at over 100 meters but not that many. You could in the future mount a 4G antenna at the top of the mast by for example moving one of the ones at the arch up there for better reception, i am not sure if this will mess up any MIMO on the 4G modem but as long as you move the correct antenna that does TX/RX then it will work with SISO. Also sure that the country you go to are broadcasting 4G in the correct bands and that the modem supports them.
Better make a sticky note for more side quest tourist adventures. All this DIY boat fun is a bit stuffy.
I have high hopes for Starlink on boats.
I'm in rural France and the gains compared to the landline were life changing.
When inter-satellite connectivity kicks in and they release consumer grade dishes for moving targets, it will surely change the state of boat connectivity forever. For sailboat having to install the dish on the mast to avoid obstruction would be a pain but you already have a radar powered by PoE you probably could add a synthetic aperture relative to keep it company.
Although, having some disconnect, even frequent is not an issue when you have that kind of speed, you realize quickly that once everything take minutes or seconds instead of hours, the probability you were doing something important when the connexion drop is quite low so you notice it but don't care about it much.
i believe the water filter you have is a string wound sediment water filter and not activated carbon one, in order to eliminate choline taste reverse osmosis membrane would be required.
I feel that if you're travelling a lot and changing that SIM cared to get service, putting that in the tech compartment is going to be a PITA. Might have been worth it trying to squeeze the yachtrouter in the nav station somewhere.
Mads, love your videos. Very inspiring. I am also interested in you Bluetooth Headphones, could you share a link? Thank you so much. Cheers
Awesome job as always guys. Question for Ava. As you know, Michigan has incredibly beautiful Fall colors this time of year. I'm wondering if you've seen anything like that over there so far?
The New Forest (not even slightly new!) is right on their doorstep, it’s both beautiful and spectacular in it’s own way. 😎👍🍻
Sir Dyson make some of the best ladies hull dryers on the market.🤫
Hopefully starlink will be available in the future for internet
How many more additions are there going to be, before you need to repaint the water line. Shout if you see any good boats for sail in the marines your staying in. Cheers
I loved the fact that u have PG tips….hope you like our English tea….!
You should definitely keep the wrapping paper on top of the insulation!
Careful when ordering sails. Watch the latest episode of Gone With the Wynn’s on S/V Curiosity. Love your episodes as usual.
That was terrible what happened to the Wynn's sails. And good on you for mentioning it here,🙏
Go with Precision Sails! They're amazing and their customer service is spectacular.
@@kddidit08 I prefer North Sails ⛵
@@gingin21jr Crusader Sails in Poole made me a great genoa
YES, BE VERY CAREFULL!! m.ua-cam.com/video/wjSNtWbx8oI/v-deo.html
Your wifi extender is a Mikrotik Metal 52ac, it seems to be rebadged to the company you purchased it from. Likely your other router is a rebadged mikrotik hash. I run mikrotik gear on my boat, super reliable!
Mads, I would have started checking the RJ45 connector for the problem you had. I'm currently installing data cables (Cat 7) throughout my house, and several times I'm sure I got the fiddley small wires in the right slot, but no. However, for you it was a software problem so never mind hahaha
Pressure gauges won't tell you anything, just change the carbon filter when you feel that water quality drops. You can also get 10 inch housing for the same base and use with the cartridge what you can get.
@@caca-mq4ex @Sail Life *_ TAKE NOTE OF THE SPAMMING BY THIS PROFILE _*
@@liongod1000 I seem them as well - I'm keeping reporting them.
You'd be better off with a differential pressure gauge on the water filter to show when it's getting plugged up. Easy to say, no idea how easy they are to find. Thanks for sharing!
Another great reason to install the carbon filter is if you are forced to take on water of questionable quality. As you fill the tanks, add a heavy dose of chlorine. That will kill any organisms. Then filter the choline back out as you use water. It's called hyper chlorination. Very useful in areas like the Caribbean, central and south America. BTW. The US and the rest of the Americas use the 10" filters in my experience.
Or as I have seen have a 10inch filter on a board & attached it to the end of the hose then a short hose into your tank filler.
@@jackdbur An external filter is a good way to remove sediment or chlorine from the incoming water supply. It will not remove or kill bacteria or parasites. You need to add a heavy dose of chlorine to the tank, let it sit in contact with the water for some time to kill everything, and then filter it back out with a carbon filter. This is not needed in most developed countries. But is often needed when you get off the beaten path.
Another way to sort the chlorinated water is either boil it then leave to cool before bottling it or leave it in an open container / bottle for a few hours to gas off.
Did you make a decision on reinforcing the solar/dinghy stainless arch?
Hey Mads, in one of your videos you mentioned a Spanish mobile plan for cruisers. I can't find it. Could you give me a hint? 😅
I would filter all water that go into your tanks. Some of the counties I have been to do not have what I consider POTABLE water.
@Lancashirelad We did it with dual filter setup that went between the hose from the dock and the water tanks. Simpler then this, but the same idea. Www.UA-cam.com/watch?v=9JXvLxdflK0. Also they have new tanks and have not left the EU yet, so their tanks are still pretty safe.
Wifi does seem like a challenge on a boat.
So excited for Starlink. Already put down my deposit a year ago, but still waiting.
I didn't put a lick of work or planning into your beautiful galley island table top but it would sure be great if there is some cardboard that could be rolled out on that when you use it as a workbench.
There are (or were) some campgrounds in the US that did run ethernet cables to the utility box so you could connect to the internet with a much faster and more dependable wired connection. And some made their internet available over the TV cable that also ran to the utility box for your camp site if you had your own cable modem and ethernet/wifi router. I haven't been sailing more recently than 15 years ago so can't verify that these same services aren't available at marinas. Have you run across any?
Might be a stupid question but why are the “port light” windows so small?
I remember the times when Mads didnt do AC on his own ... he has really moved on
He has put an ac outlet in a shower!!!
Would be interested to know, if your AC neutral/ground is connected to hull/boat structure, whether you are using GFI devices. Impressively techy setup! Thanks for making videos of your work.
The price for the Yacht Router Mini s5 is € 1,612.50. That's loco!
