  • This is for last resort! As components become scarce and expensive this is a way to make primers when the store shelves are bare. WARNING! this is not 100% reliable. This video is to demonstrate that where there is a will there is a way. I am also trying a new camera.

    Thank you for taking the time to make this video. Reloading primers is definitely as a last resort. I'm all for just going to the gun store and buying 1000 primers for around $38. However - I didn't like not being able to shoot/reload whenever "the shortages" hit. I study it for when the "outages" hit. The chemicals needed can be found it "Hatchers Notebook - page 153 I believe (if memory serves). H48 compound is 17.0 grains Potassium chlorate, 9.0 grains antimony sulfide, 4.0 grains ground glass and 3.0 grains of sulfur. Also add .2 grains (not much) of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda). This makes the primer a little less corrosive. H42 compound is the same except the ground glass is left out because of the possibility that this could be an abrasive on the barrel of the firearm. We are achieving close to 100% reliability. The failures for these primers are re-insertion of the anvil and/or poor workmanship on my part. It IS a tedious process. Fun? No not really. Something good to know? In my opinion - heck yes. The chemist that helped me made it as safe as possible. These compounds are still corrosive and your firearm must be cleaned after firing. He is working on non-corrosive primer powders. I have a gun show to prepare for but I will post "Homemade Primer Course" document by the chemist. "Hatchers notebook" (1947 I think) - can be found on amazon. The chemist wrote the document - I followed the chemists instructions and am making my own vids. Thanks again - I learned a lot.

    If you place the old primer on a wood surface instead of metal when you tap out the dimple, you will get better results. Also I recommend a standard punch that is rounded off (no sharp edges). The primer should be somewhat of a bubble shape.

    I read about using this method in the CIA Black Books. As I remember, 1 or 2 drops of alcohol or acetone applied to the compound in the primer will turn it to a past and bond it to the primer cup. I tried this some years back with some berdan primed .30-06. It worked as they all popped and a few mid range loads I made up fired. I also drilled out a few for shotgun primers that worked well. At that time I couldn't get the berdan primers and had over 500 cases given to me. It worked in a pinch.

  • @mncitizen4364
    @mncitizen4364 11 років тому

    Ammosmith, We did stuff like this when we were kids back in the fifties. I guess some things never change. My favorite trick was to lay a matchhead (standard safety type works fine) on a hard steel surface and hit it with a hammer. Oh, cover your ears first. Seriously, the things you do call for a lathe. You really would get to a way different level with your smithing. A small Hardinge turret lathe would be nice. In the US, you should be able to get one for under a thousand these days.

  • @x1xBryanx1x

    I used to make impact sensitive powder/rocks by mixing the striker with the match heads. Rub isopropyl alcohol on the striker, and it wipes right off. You can then mash it together with the matches. While its wet, it wont ignite. It will turn from mud to solid rock in a few hours.

Quite more ubiquitous would be Armstrong's mix (shown in the video), you can also mix it from safety matches and their striking surface, or just use those paper strips for toy guns. Most people doing this use two dots for a primer

    I was just about to point this out. You can reload .22 shells with match heads too but again very corrosive unless civil war, zombie apocalypse, alien invasion, delayed mayan prediction, or radioactive rabid koala break out I'm sticking to store bought primers and .22s.

    With primers being relatively inexpensive, this method is bordering on the threshold of where I start to consider that "time is money".

    There is a company making reloading tools for .22LR. They sell,ala carte, a primer mix that is far more reliable than Armstong mixture (aka matches+striker surface). Mix it up and a little dab will do ya! Let it dry and reassemble, CAREFULLY!

      I've seen that! I would like to get the unprimed brass to make jackets out of. Love to see copper used for 22 casings.

      Somewhere in the past I saw on the Tube here someone using .22 cal brass to make jacketed .223 projectiles, great if you can't find them on the shelves of our favorite shooters supply however I understand that the last lead producer has closed production several years back due to stricter environmental laws imposed by the Obozo administration, seems like another way to mess with shooters and the military.

      @@Subgunman I'm not trying to start another shortage, but you're absolutely right about the last lead producer closing down several years ago(In the U.S.). For this reason I have accumulated several hundred pounds of pure lead, and some tin and antimony. Don't use wheel weights. Try to get lead tubing that has been stripped from hospital and industrial settings- it's virgin lead and pure. Or just buy new lead from online firms. The sting of stiff price will fade pretty quick. Wheel weights frequently contain some zinc- death to your bullet quality.

    Put a fold inn your index card you might actually get everything into the primer cup instead of dumping half on the bench😂😂😂. Ten thousand matches to make a few primers, no thank you unless it was an emergency situation only.

    Man , I hope things never get this serious or desperate. I realize you're making this as a worse case scenario "'BUTT""' this would be RuffStuff. I'm thinking that buying a bulk of them and vacuum packing some.
