    Ingenious use of the old coffee maker. Just took one apart for scrap and was wondering if I could make something out of the heater element,glad I found this. I always have lead and copper sulfate "root destroyer" around from plumbing work.I'm going to try this on the large maxi-slugs I use in my muzzle loader.Really enjoyed the info,thanks for posting.

    Great three part series. I enjoyed it. Seems like a bit of work to do but they look really decent after they're done. I cast and reload right now and it's always nice to learn something new.

    I did a copper plating demonstration (like your setup) for my kid's junior high science class. I used an old wall wart power supply from an answering machine. It worked great. Mine was 9V DC output at 1 amp but 12 to 36VDC, 1A would be even better. You can get them almost free at garage sales and thrift stores.

    If you ever worked in an electroplating shop for any amount of time the AMPS always find their own, the volts your running is what determines how thick and how fast it will plate, to many volts you'll burn it....the amps are a non issue, its far easier to control how any volts your running. Yes i am a former hard anodizeder and chrome plater from a gun shop... Along with mag phosphate, black oxide and and many other jobs plating weapons.

    Oh yeah...the value to this as I see it is that you don't have to fool with bullet lube. I doubt this would work too well with rifle bullets but I hope I'm wrong about that. Somebody was noting that these aren't tough like jacketed bullets; they're time consuming and expensive to make, etc. If you get the RCBS bullet feeder it will gum-up using conventionally lubricated lead castings. These should eliminate that problem and the increased convenience thereafter should offset any problems.

    I removed the original reservoir from mine. I just have the base now with tubing leading to a 10 gallon tub. I used 3/8ths inch inside diameter, 1/2 inch outside diameter clear vinyl tubing with hose clamps at the heater end. That's as far as I got tonight. I'll build an appropriate sized shelf unit to combine the pieces. I want to try the slit sheet metal with holes type bullet holder but I bought some speaker wire just in case. Got a step drill and I'll lay out holes with graph paper.

    @armenlanesh818: You can get .223 molds (.224"), just order and wait. Cast lead bullets are routinely shot at 2500fps. They have to fit the barrel's groove diameter closely and need a gas check. Also the bullet lubricant has to be suitable (such as LARS HVR) & the bore surface cannot be rough. Your rifle bullets will not melt (especially in mid-air). The alloy yield strength must exceed the peak chamber pressure or your bullet base will deform and produce poor accuracy. Stay below 2000 fps.

    the system consists mainly of an one way valve... it receives fluid by gravity, then when it heats up, the fluid is forced to rise the other way...
    your valve may be faulty

  • @PaulZola78
    @PaulZola78 11 років тому

    If you do this system just like he shows, you can use a piece of cast copper to weigh down the twin fill tubes that jet the water into the box. The pure cast copper would only provide an additional reservoir of copper for the plating process at worst, or just be successful at holding down the hot water tubes when they blow hot solution into the plating box.

    Spinesales,
    Thanks for taking your time to teach how to copper plate bullets. I am going down that road. I was just informed today by my son, that our indoor range in Newport News,Va. will not allow lead bullets in the range to be implemented soon. I started casting in the 80's to offset buying jacketed bullets but must now do so if my son and I are to enjoy the casting,reloading and shooting sport/hobby. Your setup is simple even love the coffee pot recirculating system. What kind of solution?

    I used a cheap coffee pot as solution heater. Place the thermal breaker Closer to the heating coil, to kept it from gurgling. It will open the circuit of the heating coil earlier….before boiling.

  • @Aparition42
    @Aparition42 11 років тому

    The lines are attached directly to the heating element tubes. They do not connect to the coffee pot's reservoir. Otherwise it will overflow. Any hardware store should have line connectors and hose clamps that will fit well and look a lot neater. Look in the irrigation system aisle. Aquarium supply stores are another good place to look.

    u could just use a fish tank heater, much simpler than your coffee machine setup. I may not be correct but I read somewere that copper plating plates smoother at 34 degrees celcius. nickel plating is done at around 70 degrees celcuis. your bath looks near boiling. also you can use an air pump in the bath to create bubbles around the pieces that are plating to again get smoother and faster plating results. aside from that nice job

    • @Lazarus0357
      @Lazarus0357 8 років тому +21

      +MrVolodus No, it is a pain in the neck! You have to cast your silver bullets by melting a (silver) cross which has been blessed by a Bishop, taking care of removing the little blue stones. Then silver is harder than lead or brass, so if you kill too many vampires your barrel life goes down like the famous lead balloon. I use wood bullets, at short distances they are as effective as wood stakes. Regards

  • @pjh42111
    @pjh42111 11 років тому

    So yeah, they're not supposed to perform like jacketed bullets. They're just easier to store, handle and clean up after than conventionally lubricated lead bullets. Also, I noticed Spinesales' lubrisizer is a Lyman 450. He has to crank the lube feed for every bullet he sizes. That's no good (had one). I use a Star now, but that does'nt alleviate the problem of sticky, messy bullet lube. Even the commercial stuff flakes off and you cant use it in a feeder. This should be a cool experiment.

    Whatever cathode is in the solution will attract copper ions and become copper plated. You don't want that happening to your cathode, as it will rob the bullets of copper. The bullets going into the solution complete the circuit and become the cathode, attracting copper ions to their surface, becoming plated.

    Use a aquaria tank, aquarium heater and air percolator, you can buy copper sulfate solution at frays electronics, you can get sulfuric acid there as well, make a 10% solution of sulfuric acid, add 2-1 copper sulfate to sol. Use a tattoo gun dc power supply, make a cathode, top bar, and anode bar, use copper wire as your anode replenisher. Basically as you plate, you use up copper ions, u replenish this with the anode wire, it will get thinner as u use it up. Keep temp no more then 78 dgf,

    there's a critical part to the coffie pot that you left out.. so i'll discuss it here.. in the inlet tube is a 1 way valve that allows water to flow into the heating element.. it is critical that this 1 way valve remains in place. you can feel it in the tube if you squeeze it, you'll feel a small valve in it.. this is what allows the perculation to occure. if that valve becomes damaged or non fuctional in any way, you'll notice the coffie pot will not circlulate.

    You say the negative conductor cannot touch the solution. Yet, when the bullets go into the solution, they are the cathode.
    The question is, as long as the circuit is open (no current flowing), there is no electrical contact between the cathode and the anode: If the bullets go into the solution before the switch is closed, does it matter if the heavy conductor is in the solution during the process?

      need to make sure that part is totally CLEAN , you can not touch part with your fingers any oils/contaminants will make copper plating peal off, clean parts with denatured alcohol or acetone.
      make sure part you want to plate with copper is connected to the NEGATIVE power lead.

    Remember that factor ball rifle(fmj) and pistol projectile jackets of all types will provide copper for plating. As you harvest material all can be reused in the mfg'ing process. Think bare bones and future restrictions now and how to get around them later. Everything is a commodity. Liberty and 1775 is the answer. MGK
