Thanks for this. I had always assumed TNG didn't become great until season 3 due to taking a while to get its "sea legs" and figure out what it wanted to be. Now I see it was all behind the scenes politics and shenanigans and finally finding the right people to make it work.
As a little kid watching TNG when it was new, I adored Wesley. And I was the target audience for him, like 8 years old when it began, but rewatching when I was older, even though I still was super fond of Wesley I can see why he was poorly received. I'm kinda glad I was able to like him though. (My believed top favourite was Geordi though) Edit: OH yeah, I loved Guinan too, and as a result of this being my first exposure to Whoopi Goldberg I remember being really surprised she was known for comedy too.
"Another floater was Wesley Crusher" this made me laugh even if I'm sure the double entendre was unintentional. Great video. Although for me when I was young and first watching TNG I didn't want to be like Wesley, I wanted to be Q.
I really liked LaForge's promotion to chief engineer, he really fit the station very well! Same goes with Worf. A Klingon chief of security was a bold move, but really, REALLY worked! Wesley, on the other hand..... he came off too much as a "prodigy", without any reason for it. He seemed without flaw, and that was his biggest problem. Except for his "teenage awkwardness around the opposite sex", he had no actual challenges to his character. If he had been more like Barkley, he might have been more interesting of a character. Doctor Pulaski was a relatively poor choice for Chief Medical Officer. She got better throughout the season, but I was glad when she left. Also, I was really hoping for a larger role for Ensign Gomez. She was an interesting character, and I really think they could have taken her "to the stars", and yes, pun intended.
I think that you were correct about the doctor. I am, however, the same age as Will Wheaton. I grew up hurrying home from school to watch reruns of TOS and watching Sunday reruns of the animated series. The original cast movies played a larger part in my life than Star Wars ever did. Some of my fondest childhood memories were waiting in line with my father to watch the original cast movies. Football and Star Trek are still the only things we share in common. Wesley crusher lived the fantasy life of a boy my age and they were correct in how he drew me to the show.
I'm a huge fan of Pulaski as a character, but I think you might be right about the behind the scenes shenanigans informing her performance. Huh. Never thought about it that way, but you're spot on.
In retrospect I have a lot of fondness for season 2 episodes like Contagion, Where Silence Has Lease and of course Q Who. The season had a slightly darker, mysterious tone to it than the post Hurley era that really brightened up the ship and the costumes. As for Pulaski, she actually had a lot more (character) development than Crusher and I liked her brusque nature. It would have been so interesting to see how she'd have fared beyond season 2. Instead, they wrote her off with not so much as a goodbye. Guess she stepped into a turbolift shaft?
I thought Pulaski was a breath of fresh air from Crusher. Season Two was very mixed but still a big improvement on Season One. Q Who and Measure of a Man were the highlights, but Where Silence Has Leased (very TOS-esque), Contagion and Time Squared were also strong tension based stories which really started to show the captaincy of Jean Luc Picard. Matter of Honour was fun too, lifting the lid on the psyche of the Klingons.

What never made sense was for him to become a being like the Traveler. If they were hoping he was going to be a friendlier version of Charlie X, they executed the idea poorly and bit late. Besides kids shouldn’t have that kind of powers, as proven by Charlie X. Wes should’ve left both Starfleet and the show differently.
Dude! You are awesome. I love these Back Trek videos. Season 2 has some of my favorite TNG episodes... Pen Pals, Q Who, i forget the name of the episode, its the one with the mediator who can't talk and his "chorus" speaks for him. The Schizoid man, Contagion. Thanks for doing what you love. It is definitely helpful during these times of uncertainty. 😘💨✨💖
My question is why did it take until Season 2 for everyone to get their assigned bridge positions?! What were they thinking the warrior would do? Man the science station? It was like they decided on the character traits but not how they'd come together to form a crew. It's a bizarre lack of forethought that was nice to see gelling together. Please Mr TriAngulum, I want some more!
I thought Muldaur did a good job with her facial expressions to convey what her character was feeling at the moment. scenes like when Data's little girl alien friend was calling for him over the communication channel, when she saw the evil Professor hologram call for the holodeck arch and when she was on the transporter pad restored to her normal age
Great video as always, very informative. I always felt like the writing staff wrote Dr Pulaski intentionally bad in order to force the studio execs to bring Dr Crusher back. And while it would be a real dirty way to burn Diana Muldaur, it wouldn't be unheard of in the industry for that sort of thing to go down in order to bring back somebody they like, using fan mail requesting doctor crusher's return as the second part of a one-two combo to make sure the job gets done. The part where you talk about Diana muldaur wouldn't get silly with the rest of the crew, that was the same story for Patrick Stewart during season 1, and Stewart has spoken on the record about the first season. But to that point, perhaps the cast knew that she was temporary and was told to treat her as such so the same level of bonding that occurred between the rest of them during season 1 was never going to take place. Again, a real dirty wait to go about getting somebody back on board that you like but it is effective. I'm curious to know your thoughts on that
One thing that has always confused me is the lingering hatred toward Diana Muldaur who played Dr. Pulaski. She performed ably enough and it's not her fault that Gates McFadden had been let go. It's not like she lobbied for the job or even said anything derogatory about her predecessor. I suppose many people would hate anybody who replaced Dr. Crusher but it seems wrong that Muldaur should get all the vitriol thrown at her when it was Paramount who created the entire situation.
I've always had this question about the Borg. Why Earth? There are plenty of colonies with humans and Federation technology, yet they keep making a beeline for Earth, bypassing other worlds in the quadrant.
I actually liked pulaski for the most part. I also strongly believe in character arcs and development the way she probably felt. I wish that some more of what they intended for her had come out but it's not a big deal to me., Though I can certainly see how the show was rougher to make with this situation. I would like to see her come back somehow in Picard, but that's just my personal opinion.
Thanks for the latest in this series. Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Diana Muldaur not sign on as a regular, and instead was a semi-recurring? I'd love to hear your take on this. Thanks.
It seems that all the Star Trek Series, except the original, seem to only really get things right, and moving in some kind of real order on Season Three. The first season is a bit sketchy and they are feeling things out, the second season they kind of have a handle on things, but are still pulling it together, and then on the third season things finally click in place the the series gets good after that. This happens on Next Gen, DS-9, Voyager, and even Enterprise. I have a feeling the same will be true of Discovery.
Worf made a better security chief than Yar. We got the Worf Effect trope from him, but at least he looked like someone that would snap you in half if you misbehaved. Why did his promotion mean he changed his baldric though? Isn’t it meant to be a symbol of family/house? I don’t get Geordi being chief engineer. He did command stuff in Season 1 and didn’t seem particularly technically minded. Then in Season 2 he’s suddenly this super engineer that knows the ship inside out. I never liked Pulaski, she was mean to Data. Didn’t Muldaur decide to leave after all the old age makeup in Unnatural Selection? The bridge looks so much better on Season 2. I hate the Season 1 Conn and Ops chairs! If I was working there I’d probably fall asleep!
I knew nothing about all the Hurley-drama, but am now soooo happy that he was let go, because I don't think that TNG really got good until season three.
The helm? Hell no, as a 15 year old I would've have wanted a position in systems administration, so I'd probably be stationed in the computer core. If i _had_ to take a bridge position I'd take Science I to further nurture my epic computer nerdiness. This isn't meant to be a brag (except, actually, it totally is, deal with it 🖖😁) but I'm intimately familiar with Linux, FreeBSD, and macOS, and I can pretty easily find my way around a Windows system too, but it isn't something I often have to work with. I taught myself actual programming at the age of 7 or 8.
Agreed. He came in and saved Star Trek from itself when it needed someone to do that, but at the same time almost doomed it 15 years later. I guess you just need to periodically get fresh blood in to run things. I'm rather old school and I do have a few quibbles with recent Star Trek, but overall I'm glad it's still in production, innovating, and finding ways to remain relevant to younger viewers, even if it doesn't always speak to me... though it does more often than not.
I thought season 2 was okay definitely an improvement over season 1 the only thing I really had a problem with was Pulaski's hostility towards Data. Data would keep proving himself over and over again to be an outstanding officer in front of Pulaski and towards the end of an episode she would warm up to him and then right in the next episode she would say something like "pitting man against machine that's ridiculous!" or "he's just a collection of circuits." Those aren't exact quotes but you get the idea.
Season 2 was not that bad and I felt it as a transition between the stagnant direction of season 1 and the growth of season 3. Some of TNG's classics Measure of a Man, Elementary, Dear Data, the Emissary and Q Who really set the stage for characters and plotline going forward.
All the Wesley abuse, I loved him was my roll model as a child so. Dr Pullaski was amazing would of liked her to come back later on in the seasons or in DS9 or Voyager idk even if her character is still alive in Picard maybe? Yea your absoutletly correct that end of the 2nd season was bad, but at least we were introduced to Ginan 10 Forward and the Borg :)
Ah, S2 of TNG. Better than S1, but still had some flaws. Also, "The Gorgon" arrived to lurk about in Sickbay till S3. But the "Beard" arrived as well, so that was good.
I actually liked Wesley. I could relate to him. I was the youngest child in my class and it wasn't named mobbing at the time but it was. Wesley gave me the hope that one day i'll find my spot. Dr. Pulaski well i'm glad tgey switched back to Dr. Crusher.
One of the major problems with Wesley was that whilst he was supposed to be this idea of the "child prodigy" getting to do all the things kids watching the show would dream of, in reality the character came across as an embodiment of privilege, underdeserved success, and generally being highly unlikable. Compare his journey to that of Nog in DS9, a character who's struggle resonated a hell of a lot more with audiences and made people happy to see him succeed, whereas any deus ex machina Welsey seemingly stumbled across (along with seemingly being fasttracked to a junior officer on the bridge of the most desirable posting in Starfleet on the recommendation of a captain who wanted to get in there with his mum) was recieved with a resounding roll of the eyes by most of the fanbase. And I can see why. In a sci-fi world of equality, here's a character who appears to get every advantage by merit of knowing the right people.
The season was definitely a step up from season 1. A lot of changes made sense and were organic. For the most part while interesting the episodes were...dull. The exceptions of A Matter of Honor, The Measure of a Man, Contagion, Times Squared, Q Who, The Emissary and Peak Performance. Any professional sports locker room will tell you to get rid of the person making all the trouble. Never met the man so I won't judge but if no one could get along with him then the correct decision was made.
In terms of me being happy that Maurice Hurley left. I dont know I think he braught some cool ideas. And i think he was put into an impossible situation. I think it is as mutch Roddenberry fault for the flaws of season one and two. True Hurley was misguided in trying to stick so hard to Roddenberry's vision. And the show would not find its voice until latter seasons. I think Season 5 is were they nocked it out of the park. Season Three still had some growing pains to deal with. I like i said in other videos i kind of have a soft spot for Hurley as i know what it is to be the guy no one likes. How ever There was this one Rumor that he sexual harassed Gates McFadden and if thats true ill stop deffending him. I think he was right about conspiracy. Its a fun epsiosed but it feels more like and X files show. He Gave us the Borge ,Lore, wrote some good episodes like Heart of Glory ( cores i think the credit for the good writing might go to D.C Fontana for that one) Q Who and Time squared. I think he gets to much hate. I would like to think that if Gene had been more interested in making a good show then showing his belifs season one would have been the balls
Do not know how I missed this episode. Season 2 is without a doubt my least favorite season. Cheers for the Borg and bringing a new way of approaching exploration vs looking like a militaristic planetary alliance. They were able to balance that for a some years to come, now the rest will come with season 2 of ST Picard hopefully. Live long and prosper 🖖🏼
Season 2 is definitely better than season 1 but there were some episodes that were not that good. Q Who is definitely my favourite Star Trek TNG season 2 episode
Before watching the video, I really want to say this season was really a case of bad timing. A strike at a time when the show was still finding its footing was not going to work. Add in a few scripts that were more than a decade out of date and you can't win. It's almost a season you can forgive due to extenuating circumstances. The one exception was Polaski. That they had no excuse for. They seemed to be going for a McCoy/Spock thing, but without McCoy's charm and Spock's ability to give as good as he gets. It was really uncomfortable to see her bully Data the was she did when he really didn't even understand what she was doing.
Season 2 was... Well... Umm... Indescribable for me. I missed most of season 1, after the Pilot (space jellyfish) and when I watched a couple of episodes of season 2 they were Pulaski centred so... Not a great motivation for me to continue watching. I love the actress but you described my issues with her very well. Just nails on a chalkboard for me. Peak Performance (Thank you for letting me know the title!) was great except for the good doctor who I thought was just an uncaring judgemental person that looked down on everyone, including Picard. And how she treated Data... That was abominable even by the' standards of today. If there is a debate on if something can be a person, the fact the debate exists answers the question.
i recnetly did a viewing of enterprise all the way through to nemesis, and shades of gray was the only ep i skipped. i even watched move along home and the muse from ds9, but i will not watch shades of gray!
thanks for the video Personally i think wesley should have been droped after the first season he was useless a spoiled brat who thought he knew more then anyone with years of experiance, once they got rid of hurley you can see the improvement of the show sad to say but as i have said on other posts Gene had the vision but lost the content he forgot people grow even his version of the utopia would have to grow up and change with time RIP Gene they (TNG) did a great job of keeping your Vision alive
If Hurley had remained, season 3 would have been TNG's last. Reportedly, he was a dick to the other writers, had little regard to the cast's input on character development and generally a disagreeable person to work with. That said, you kind of have to give him credit for being so passionate about trying to maintain Gene's vision for the the future of mankind. By this point, Gene had come to believe that humanity had moved beyond the failings of its more base emotions such as greed and envy. The Federation was benevolent and sublime and there would be no internal strife or conflict there or in Starfleet. Basically everyone was good and smart and everyone got along. No internal conflicts. Which makes for boring and unbelievable characters and equally boring stories. Hurley privately though the idea of a conflict free universe was "whackdoodle". Hurley's mistake was thinking that Gene was going to live forever. He also probably lived in terror of Gene's shifty and duplicitous lawyer, Leonard Maizlish who was always lurking on set and raiding staff offices at night for evidence that people were straying from Gene's vision. It's interesting and sad that Gene arrived at this conclusion. While it's nice to think mankind will evolve (and must if we are to venture to the stars), he forgot something he once said back in the 60's. "Yes, I am writing stories about humans in the 22nd century, but I am writing for a 20th century audience. They have to be able to relate".
It seems to me that the saying 'art through adversity' is true in this instance. Roddenberry, appears to have been too conceited about his creation and didn't understand the evolution of needed.
Wesley was poorly written from the start if anyone is to be honest. He kind of improved when he got in Starfleet Academy, but just barely. What grinds the the gear of fans is how he left the show. Seriously, turning a barely tolerable character into...whatever Wes became was a stupid idea. And they did it again with Kes in Voyager. What was with Trek and giving essentially kids such powers back then? Were they hoping for another case of Charlie X? If they were, they did it poorly. Wes didn’t have to become a Traveler like being to leave the show, that was always a stupid idea. Kes could’ve left Voyager without becoming ethereal either.
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios Have you ever considered who really could be watching, either from without or within? I'm not talking conspiracy but we really have no idea.
There is no evidence of alien life, and even if there were, the chances of them watching one of my videos is so statistically remote, it doesnt even bear mentioning!

I didn't mind Wesley. But then again I also actually liked Neelix.
Oh?! So what was your thoughts on Kes then?
The season was definitely a step up from season 1. A lot of changes made sense and were organic. For the most part while interesting the episodes were...dull. The exceptions of A Matter of Honor, The Measure of a Man, Contagion, Times Squared, Q Who, The Emissary and Peak Performance. Any professional sports locker room will tell you to get rid of the person making all the trouble. Never met the man so I won't judge but if no one could get along with him then the correct decision was made.
I do wonder if Whoopi Goldberg will reprise her role as Guinan in Picard, it would be nice to see her again. Also Romulan Ale is illegal lol.
I hated Pulaski.. Thank the lordt that Crusher came back! I loved Guinan and loved Geordi becoming engineer!
Ha, Ha, finally first!!!😷😷😷
Third actually, but still an accomplishment :) Grats
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios sigh... Someday. 😞
Whats the music in the background called?
Sorry I dont know the name off the top of my head, but all music used on this channel comes from UA-cams Royalty Free Music Library!
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios ok thanks
No problem :)
I would like to think that if Gene had been more interested in making a good show then showing his belifs season one would have been the balls
bUt GeNEs vISioN!
The Royale is awful. And I love it.
LOL #IDIC ;)
I kind of wish the actual novel existed.
It's one of my favorite episodes, but everyone has their own opinion
I thought Troi was Riker's Beard. Oh my! I'm hear all week. Try the veal and don't forget to tip your waitress. Good night!
Season 2 is definitely better than season 1 but there were some episodes that were not that good. Q Who is definitely my favourite Star Trek TNG season 2 episode
yeah for drama

Before watching the video, I really want to say this season was really a case of bad timing. A strike at a time when the show was still finding its footing was not going to work. Add in a few scripts that were more than a decade out of date and you can't win. It's almost a season you can forgive due to extenuating circumstances.
The one exception was Polaski. That they had no excuse for. They seemed to be going for a McCoy/Spock thing, but without McCoy's charm and Spock's ability to give as good as he gets. It was really uncomfortable to see her bully Data the was she did when he really didn't even understand what she was doing.
I liked Wesley he wasn’t so bad later on.
Well of course, to each their own :)

You don’t think Wesley improved like the rest did over time?
I feel bad for Diana who has been so ostracized in the years since. As well as her treatment on set
It seems to me that the saying 'art through adversity' is true in this instance. Roddenberry, appears to have been too conceited about his creation and didn't understand the evolution of needed.
At least you could say that Season 2 wasn't total rubbish.
I actually really liked Doctor Pulaski.
LOL well to each their own :) #IDIC
I hate “Shades of Gray.” I do like season 2 though.
In a far more human way, does that include the aliens?
As far as I know, Aliens arent watching my episodes or TNG for that matter... Unless you have concrete proof otherwise, the reference is correct :P
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios We never know who is watching?
Oh I know who's watching, I have UA-cam Analytics :P
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios Have you ever considered who really could be watching, either from without or within? I'm not talking conspiracy but we really have no idea.
There is no evidence of alien life, and even if there were, the chances of them watching one of my videos is so statistically remote, it doesnt even bear mentioning!
I was NEVER a fan of the borg.
I have never liked Rick Berman or his take on Star Trek.
