The first 1/2 of the film was rather excellent, actually. The character interactions were all spot-on, and a lot of it gelled really well. Regarding the characters, it really came across that these people had spent so much time together, and been through so much, that they were their own friends and family at that point. They didn't really have anyone else. The movie also touched on a lot of concepts and ideas that Trek had traditionally glossed over (such as the new Enterprise having a lot of "new ship" problems - living next to the Newport News Shipyard, I can tell you that that is not far off from reality). Or that it was released in a summer schedule that involved Last Crusade, Batman, Back to the Future II, Lethal Weapon 2, Ghostbusters 2, License to Kill and The Little Mermaid
While not my favorite of the TOS movies, it still is...Kirk era ST. I have watched Star Trek since it's inception in 66, sitting with my Dad for each episode. Then my son with my in reruns. So, I am loyal, if you will, to the TOS. ST5 was the least liked for me, but as i said, it's still, STAR TREK.
As poorly received as this film was compared to others, it stays with me for THREE MAJOR REASONS 1 - the introduction of what would be come a somewhat recurring Klingon theme...eg the same tune and notes during words escape from the engineering battle with the borg in first contact 2 - the banter between the trio at the first campfire, primarily McCoy’s “god, I liked him better before he died!” 3 - Scotty knocking himself out, combined with the dialogue
Kirk, Spock and McCoy go camping, After saying Goodnight Kirk dreams of seeking out God. (StartTrek 5 Happens). Kirk wakes up at the end of the movie and no one speaks of it again..
I like the time he took to enhance the latter day relationships between the familiar cast members. The central premise was unusual and far fetched, but the paradise world being a contradictory situation was interesting. But the budget cuts and issues between cast and crew members can be seen and felt and so for me that drags on the movie more than the story does. The film does feel chopped up but at least more than salvageable.
I always wondered why we got Star Trek IV which regardless of what you say about it being an environmental message wrapped up in a Star Trek blanket (Yeah Ive heard that one before, don't agree) was a phenomenal movie, to we get Star Trek V which from head to toe felt like a TV movie. With a TV movie budget. And TV movie special effects. And a TV movie plot. Star Trek V is to me the great disappointment, which is a real shame because it has some really thoughtful ideas in it. It brought us one of the greatest lines in fiction ever, "What does god need with a starship?", and posed some fantastic metaphysical and existential questions ("I don't want my pain taken away I need my pain!"), which is *quintessential* Star Trek. Perhaps if the restrictions weren't there and Shatner had more time to develop it along with more production time and resources it could have been better, and I think it would have been, but only so far. It could have been *not as good* as the previous films, but not what we got. I wouldn't feel that kind of disappointment again until Star Trek Nemesis many years later, and far worse. Ooooof *shudders*
I was liking it right up to the point they got on Enterprise-A, & we see that the ship isn't really put together very good. It just went down hill after that.
Yeah, and why (in canon) would they have taken out that beautiful sleek bridge we saw in Star Trek IV and replaced it with that clunky bridge that we see in Star Trek V?!?! (Of course we know it is because the sets were destroyed after each film.)
Actually, I have a sweet spot for Star Trek V. Yes, it has its flaws and mistakes, but I still like it. Might have to do with how old I was at the time it came out, in the way it was the first Trek film I actively awaited and got to see in the cinema IIRC. Also, I think the humor works (for the most part).
Originally Shatner had an idea of Captain Kirk of fighting rock like creatures on the planet. However, when seen the only prototype of the rock creature (seen in some footage) they went over budget and decided not to use that idea.
I remember sitting in the cinema as the end credits rolled and feeling unsatisfied... It seemed to have been compressed, lessened, somehow and I couldn't put my finger on it. It has scope, ambition and delves into places in our characters which were until then depths not seen... Yet... Of course, as years have gone by, bits of the tale of how this was made and indeed compressed have come to light. I feel it's not bad for what it actually is: yet a shadow of what it might have been. At least I've not forgotten to keep watching it even as it played, as I did even on the first viewing of Nemesis!* *Ah! Nemesis! Each set piece is superb, yet put together, such a dull film!
Raising my kids as trekkies, I forced them to watch it. It was awful experience for me as well. Terrible story. The whole cast seemed out of character. Whether that's bad story or bad directing I don't know. The whole film felt out of place.
It was a subpar movie but the score by Jerry Goldsmith was the best. I put that movie in the category of the score was better than the movie just like Alien 3.
Goldsmith refused to return for ST6 TUC because of what a flop this movie was. I loved the soundtrack, I bought it a few years ago and regularly listen to it.
Back in the day, The Final Frontier was the second ST-related thing I ever saw, after The Wrath of Khan. I was like 6 or 7 and already felt that something was very off with the film, plus I still remember my finding the last act, the supposed climax, very underwhelming. Shortly afterwards, I began watching TNG on telly and, a couple of years later, DS9 arrived and I was so excited to see Patrick Stewart to appear in its pilot, because he was to me one of the biggest superstars in the world. :-) And though I was just 8 and a half years old at the time, I already was enamoured of Jadzia and I wanted so much for Julian to end up with her. :-)
I really didn't mind ST 5. It was a more lighthearted and funny story. Everybody has their opinion on how good or how bad it was and that's fine. As far as I'm concerned, it didn't reall matter how successful it was. I rather liked it just like the last 4 films. ST 5 may have not been another jewel in the franchises crown but I liked anyway. The only small problem I had was some swearing. That being said, ST 5 wasn't good or bad it was mediocre at best.
I've always had a soft spot for this movie. It was the first Trek film I saw in the theater and part of my introduction to the franchise. Still, it is not a great movie. It's frustrating because it could have been one of the best. It just needed some polishing on the script, better special effects, and maybe a better director.
OMG, I get to be first. cool! This proved 2 things, Shatner sucks as a director and Nimoy is a genius as a director. I'll even go so far as to say this entire movie was totally cringeworthy. The real problem with this movie was the writing, the direction.
I just realized that this Movie coins the reasons why Star Trek Discovery falls flat on it's face... Because if they replaced Michael Burnham with his brother from this Movie named Sobock (
I often think of it as a bad movie, and yet I've rewatched it more often than a lot of the others. It doesn't make sense, but it's fun. It's a step backwards in special effects, but still better than unenhanced TOS. And despite Nemesis having the excellent Battle of the Bassen Rift, it's probably a better movie than Nemesis overall. "Star Trek V--It's not the worst".
I don't hate this movie as much as I do Star Trek: Insurrection, but there is a very thing gap between them on my ranking of the movies. There's still stuff in this movie I enjoy, the idea of Nimbus 3 is pretty cool for example, but this really is a bad movie. Like you I do respect Shatner, but I don't like how he acts now. i'm in my 20s so i don;t know how Shatner used to act, but I do follow him on Twitter and he comes off very condescending and outright rude at some times. I always skip this movie during my rewatch as I find it doesn't really add anything to the characters or the overall story that 2, 3, and 4 were building on. 6 (my favorite Trek movie) somewhat continues that story with Kirk mourning David and dealing with the very species that was responsible for his death. I really enjoyed the video!
Worst Star Trek films . Star Trek 5, Star Trek : into Darkness ( a real Con job of Khan ) Star Trek. Nemesis , ( The clone of Picard being young and bald , Picard would.still have hair at that age.) Star Trek Beyond. Watch Kirk ride a 100 year old motorcycle with no signs of age. And a starship that crashed 100 years ago, still flies. What Shlock. Also how does Kirk stay Captain in the JJ verse if he keeps losing his ship?..
I just checked the playlist and it's ALL there up to this one! So not sure why you cant see it? maybe a UA-cam glitch on your end? ua-cam.com/play/PLQ5q81O6_DhcqDY7v8SiKfwMBOwF7AReV.html
I've always thought this film flopped due to shatners ego (I've even said this in one of my videos) But there is alot more to it. Can't wait for part 2
Is V the best Trek movie? Of course not. But no matter how bad it was at the time, more recent canon productions have set the bar far lower for good/bad Trek. Is V worse than Discovery or Lower Decks or any of a nearly countless number of episodes of Voyager, DS9, or Enterprise? Shatner did a fine job directing, the mistake was allowing him to craft the story. Kirk Forever!!!
Star Trek 5, is considered the 2nd Worst Trek film of all time by the majority of fandom! It has an average rating of 24% on all the major audience rating websites... Whereas DSC has a 76% and Lower Decks has a 72%... So yes it was worse, and if anything it would be this movie, since it came first, that lowered the bar you speak of :P
When I went to see this in the theater...There were only 4-6 of us sitting in there. BUT the moment between Kirk and Sybock (Kirk: Your vision....Sybock: Given to me by god he waits for us on the other side)....Woah! There was a near up roar from all of us, we actually looked at each other. Total strangers. No, religion and images of god does not belong in science fiction especially star trek. (Spite Stargate did an interesting retake on the that).....To this day most ANY Trekkie like myself find this the 2nd all time worst film next to Nemesis.
Just watch this movie for the first time last week. This was the worst of all the movies. I just watch all of movies with the TOS crew and the first two made with the TNG crew.
For me... it’s the worst film of the franchise, I remember the expectation to see the movie and when the movie end and walk away from the sala , I feel disappointed since the beginning, thanks for the data, now I know why is for me, the worst movie. 🖖🏻
"Do you think it deserves all of the negative comments from the fandom"? uh... a resounding yes. This film was hot garbage. There is a great film in there somewhere, but it's hidden behind mischaracterization, bad acting, poor attempts at comedy and the worst special effects I have ever seen.
I have seen all of the series and all of the movies multiple times, except for ST5. Once and only once. Enough. It has little going for it and with Shatner's hackneyed, trite sense of humor all over the place there is nothing to recommend about this one.
And they had to reuse the sets that star trek TNG were reusing from the Films and not alter them too much because the Next gen crew needed the sets for filming at the same time. It leads to a kind of drinking game of spot the wrong graphics in both productions ST V has LCARS panels and door stickers in random places, some shots of TNG filmed during production of the Films has the blue library computer panels up on the replicators.
I liked it for Nyota Uhura's dance

3 - Scotty knocking himself out, combined with the dialogue
Star Trek seemed to have made all people involved in making it hate each other
That is the "order" of things :)
V is the ONLY Star Trek Movie I haven't watched in years...
finally a new backtrek. So looking forward to ST 6-13 (if you can call the kelvin timeline 10-13)
At least I've not forgotten to keep watching it even as it played, as I did even on the first viewing of Nemesis!*
*Ah! Nemesis! Each set piece is superb, yet put together, such a dull film!
It was an expansion of an hour long episode, at least, that's the way it felt.
Oh me too! I was very unsatisfied at the end...
@@travisfoster1071 If only JJ had reworked it instead of going for a Khan reboot...
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios Shame it didn't get the Kelvin Timeline treatment, I think...
It was jarring to watch this film after the excellence of the last three. Thank goodness for the sixth, The Undiscovered Country.
Unfortunately I agree :(
Raising my kids as trekkies, I forced them to watch it.
And though I was just 8 and a half years old at the time, I already was enamoured of Jadzia and I wanted so much for Julian to end up with her. :-)
I wonder if Sean Connery read the script and went "Nah, I'll Pass" this film had some good ideas but the execution was flawed
No, he was already hired for The Last Crusade by the time they got around to asking him!
Wonder if he used this as a bartering tool saying " Look Shee I've been offered a role in Shtar Trek " lol
it would be really interesting to see his script made, also maybe he should have gotten help from dc fontana and gene, just to satisfy him

I wonder if Sean Connery would have made a difference if he took the part of Sybok
I've always had a soft spot for this movie. It was the first Trek film I saw in the theater and part of my introduction to the franchise. Still, it is not a great movie. It's frustrating because it could have been one of the best. It just needed some polishing on the script, better special effects, and maybe a better director.
Compared to the Kelvinverse films, Star Trek V is actually watchable.
OMG, I get to be first. cool! This proved 2 things, Shatner sucks as a director and Nimoy is a genius as a director. I'll even go so far as to say this entire movie was totally cringeworthy. The real problem with this movie was the writing, the direction.
I agree! Sadly the writing was horrible...
I really wish it had been better
Never liked this film, Snatner's take ( directors take) seems aimlessly wandering. Letting Snatner direct it, biggest mistake to be made.
Unfortunately yes...
I just realized that this Movie coins the reasons why Star Trek Discovery falls flat on it's face...
Because if they replaced Michael Burnham with his brother from this Movie named Sobock (
Great Star Trek film: the cold open, soundtrack, El Capitan, Luckinbill, camp fire and confront your pain scene.
From RiffTrax:
"Star Trek V: Shatner Ruins The Franchise!"
Ummm ,pretty sure we weren't paying much attention to the SFX.
I am shocked that you skipped doing an overview of Star Trek 4. Was this done on purpose?
No I didnt, it's there! ua-cam.com/video/TtKaIDuyIdM/v-deo.html&ab_channel=TriAngulumAudioStudios
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios you are right. My memory has been terrible as of late, forgetting lots of things. Sorry for the inconvenience.
This is my least favorite film in the entire film series.
A lot of people echo your statement!
It's down there. Star Trek: Nemesis and Star Trek Into Darkness give it a lot of competition though.
Nothing worse than a laughing Vulcan.
The playlist for the star trek history series stops at video 20. Everything after start trek 3 is not on it.
I just checked the playlist and it's ALL there up to this one! So not sure why you cant see it? maybe a UA-cam glitch on your end? ua-cam.com/play/PLQ5q81O6_DhcqDY7v8SiKfwMBOwF7AReV.html
@@TriAngulumAudioStudios The list that appears I you go to your page clicking your name stops at video 20. The horizontal list in the second row.
@@void2258 Thats odd, as it works fine for me...
No its just a poor and embarrassing moving
I've always thought this film flopped due to shatners ego (I've even said this in one of my videos)
But there is alot more to it.
I still consider this the absolute worst ST film made thus far
Its sad to hear :( But completely understandable!
that was the worst movie of the star trek franchise
For me... it’s the worst film of the franchise, I remember the expectation to see the movie and when the movie end and walk away from the sala , I feel disappointed since the beginning, thanks for the data, now I know why is for me, the worst movie. 🖖🏻
You are very welcome :)
Wait a minute. One of the worst Start Trek films? No, it is the worst Star Trek film, by far.
Not a good movie in so many ways. Bad ideas, bad execution, poor direction...
Yeah, it started looking a little silly because of that.
