Eric Cartman I see your intentions but the ironic thing is that those 2 scenes were the most innovative and spoken about as the drawing scene changed the MPAA and the fact that the majority of Titanic was Practical Effects rather than CGI. Plus Best Picture isn't given for the story (screenwriter) or style (director) but the business aspect of how the film got produced (producer). So it actually did deserve it in those terms.

It will definitely not defeat a lot of movies. Even the non-winning movies like The Dark Knight. Titanic was very well-directed and produced, but the storyline isn't it, really. The 2-day process of falling in love is really unrealistic (yea, it's a movie, but still no depth to that) and the fact that they simply made it like it was Jack and Rose's fault why the ship sank is not it.

Even though it is customary today for the cast to come up when a film wins Best Picture at the Oscars; this custom did not start until The Lord of the Ring: The Return of the King won Best Picture. The casts of Million Dollar Baby, Crash, The Departed, No Country For Old Men, do not go up with the producers when the Best Picture Oscar is accepted. This tradition is picked up again in 2009 with the win of Slumdog Millionaire.

There hasn’t been a movie in 20 years that has made a universal impact as did Titanic did. I remember seeing it on opening night with my parents. I was fifteen then and the theater wasn’t a full house . When it was over, it felt like something supernatural occurred to all of us, and the whole world was yet to find out. Not a word was spoken between my parents or myself in the car ride home. We were in complete loss for words because nothing before this film gripped an audience like it did. It was spellbinding.

The Academy got it right, some hundreds of thousands of critics got it wrong. Most of them give it too low of a rating, for example imbd, 7.7/10, a score lower than _a whole lot_ of movies. Plot holes are the number one reason I've witnessed people rating movies low for, but you can find plot holes in any story and reason out of them by lowering art form into a sequel of explanations that end up with no bigger reward. Filling in all the answers isn't what any reasonable artist does, nor is it telling a completely believable story. The realm of Hollywood is pure storytelling where the point is to believe and get sucked into a different world. If it's all real we would have no curiosity for something new to happen, to be wondered about and celebrated. We would never inspire a bigger vision for humanity through the arts. The point of such an artist is to bring us into a deeper medium of impactful experience, whether it's appeasing on a mental level, like Memento or The Matrix, or on an emotional level like Titanic, it shows us something new and never before seen. No one has ever seen a movie like Titanic.

greenkitty82 Titanic is now sadly a gravesite. Items such as shoes and other possessions were found on the ocean floor.
Robert Ballard (who found Titanic in 1985) despises how people go down to visit the ship, having called it disrespectful. There have been many items retrieved from Titanic and sold at auctions. I myself find it horrifyingly disrespectful to the people who died aboard the ship.
Hell has a special place for gravediggers.

@Philosophy Wit Totally agree! It perfectly shows what a humble guy and a genius he is. Not just pulling the biggest movie stunt of the 90's, in reference to Titanic's enormous budget of $200 Million, but also being the first director to get past the $1 Billion at the Box Office and almost even reaching $2 Billion at the time in 1998. Today it has surpassed that figure. Nevertheless, the movie is still legendary for its time and continues to be so to this day.

Not that I think the standard has gotten any lower (maybe it did, idk), but their performance was amazing but ppl fail to recognize that, especially considering their age at the time. I cry inside for Leonardo. I mean he has literally proven to everyone again and again and again that he DESERVES the title but he just never gets it. Its probably a slap in his face when he sees a new comer in the industry, gets a big shot in a really good film, gets the attention and the fuzz and then they win. It's just unfair for him. Listen, people make lists about the things that are wrong with Titanic like: the language; people did not talk like that in 1912. I’m still mad Titanic didn’t sweep every category, it should have. Kate and Leo deserved oscars for their performances.

@Dean Bennington yeah I do, so you know anything anything about Hollywood politics and the unspoken rules of the academy and how they choose winners?

Ehh, excessive. They performed more in the service of the film than for their glory. They still had bright futures ahead of them.

This is the film responsible for shaking me to the core as a 12 year old and sparking my love for film and cinema.
I didn’t even want to see it at first because it looked “boring,” but the movie I originally wanted to see was sold out, so my family got tickets for this instead….best fluke ever.

No merit my ass. Titanic is such a wonderful film it's a miracle it got made. We have groundbreaking special effects that are still groundbreaking to this day, it's flawlessly crafted, sharply written, has fantastic acting from its stellar cast, the characters are well developed, its music is mesmerizing and finally, the film has emotional power strong enough to bring the burliest of men to tears. Its a very sweet love story and an excellent depiction of the sinking. A perfect 10/10.

I watched it for the 1st time in April 1998, it came to our little town quite late. I remember in day 1 I didn’t get the tickets, they’re all sold out. So I came 3 hours earlier the next day, at 9 is am for 12ish pm show. They only opened the counter at 10.30, so I just sat there waiting. And it was all worth it. I came out of the theater with my eyes swollen, red, mindblowed, and couldn’t stop thinking about it all day and all night. So I kept coming back and coming back to theater for another 11 times. And been watching it on TV countless times, bought and watched it on deluxe collection DVD (with James Cameron signature on the cover), been watching it again and again on Disney+, went on theater again multiple times for its 20th and 25th anniversary and still bawling my eyes out with tears every each time. Just an incomperable masterpiece👏👏.
