So this video got delayed quite a bit. I was aiming to have it done by mid May but, due to various unforeseen irl circumstances (including a headache, cold and cough all at once...) I was unable to get it finished until now (also, forgive any spelling errors etc. I have nearly recovered now, but trying to proofread everything with a massive headache is not fun!). In the time between recording and uploading, some more stuff has been released including episode titles for the series. These seem to suggest that we might actually be, at the very least, going up to Edward's death. Episode 6 is "what cannot be cured", which could very well be his illness and the last (8) is called "To Death, we must stoop" so either the King's death or, if they kill him off in 7 ("to laugh, to lie, to flatter, to face") they could just rush ahead to Jane's execution and the series ends on a cliff hanger with Elizabeth in the Tower, setting up season 2. When I did the breakdown of the behind the scenes stuff, there were some signs that it might go further, and my personal preference is that Edward's death/Nine Days/Mary's accession, would make a natural cut off point. but there were not many concrete examples of this and the trailer is mainly focussed on the Somerset/Seymour stuff. We will have to see though once the series is done and whether they will stretch it out or be a bit more concise.
A thought....the phrase "what cannot be cured" is part of a saying. The whole saying is "What cannot be cured, must be endured." May have no relevance, just a thought.
To be fair, I've seen the aging down of an older actress done well before. Say what you will about The White Queen. but one thing I was genuinely impressed with was the girl they got to play Anne Neville, who I later learned was 29, but earlier on, they did legit succed in making her look 14 with clever use of wardrobe and mannerisms for the half of the series when she was younger.
Just be thankful Phillipa Gregory has nothing to do with it this time and be happy with that, no modern TV show about this subject-matter is ever gonna be perfect but at least it's not The Spanish Princess
Perhaps they'll get round the issue of Elizabeth's age by Quantum Leap-ifying it: -Elizabeth glances in a mirror - Camera pans to show a younger version of herself staring back from the mirror -Elizabeth: "Oh Boy..." - Quantum Leap theme starts playing.
Valid assessment in my opinion. Well done sir. Oh & btw they used shields for jousting all the way through but that style is rather early for the time period.
Note: POSSIBLE SPOLIERS BELOW so stop now! @The Laughing Cavalier I just finished watching episode 2 and either you work for the Starz network or you have psychic abilities along with your obvious superior historical knowledge. Not sure if you've watched yet but thus far, you've correctly guessed what many of these trailer clips were about. My mind is blown; I've been a subscriber of yours for some time and it's quite obvious you know your history, but wow; bloody good job, sir. Love the Game of Thrones drops, too. The "Little Bear" is certainly not so little anymore. Since you mentioned "The White Queen" here, I think the actor who is playing Henry Grey also played the Duke of Buckingham in that series... I gotta look that up. Also, not even 7 minutes into the first episode and there is already a quite loud sex scene and the "F" word is used recklessly; even "The Tudors" only used that word once and I remember exactly when. It was when the Spanish Ambassador (Eustace Chapuys) tells Henry that The Emperor Charles considers Henry his "uncle", to which Henry says "HIS F**KING UNCLE!?!? HOW OLD AM I?!?" LOL obviously an epic like, IMO. Lastly, with reference to @11:56 I'm sad to say you are spot on. Her pawn is Elizabeth and I think they are going down the dreaded "Philippa Gregory" road with her. By that, I mean an turning her into scheming and conniving woman who's pulling all the strings behind the scenes while allowing the men to think they're the ones in control. 🙄
Casting older actors as teenagers is the same thing they do in teen dramas, where it is sometimes used to frame relationships between teens with teachers/college students/grown adults, as ‘romantic’. I’m 26 myself and am sick of seeing people my age play teenagers. This actress may be great, but I do think she’s too old for the role. In acting, I remember reading that your casting age (the age you can convincingly play) is your age plus or minus 5 years. So having an actress that is 18 or 19 would be more suitable. In some cases ageing up is not a big deal. The actress in the Spanish Princess was in her late 20’s playing a 16 year old. However, her age wasn’t really central to the story, she was just vaguely ‘young’. But as you said, Elizabeth’s youth front and center in this drama. She is ‘becoming’ the monarch everyone knows. This should have been taken into account. By the time the real Elizabeth I was 27, she had been on the throne for about 2 years.
The currently released material for this show really makes it seem like Elizabeth is a consenting party in what Seymour does to her, which is sickening. I know this isn't a PG production, but it feels like they unofficially replaced that author with Alison Weir, who ships Elizabeth/Seymour in her novels and even in her biography of Elizabeth.
I do wish historic dramas would stop copying Game of Thrones, it was a good series (If you ignore Seasons 7 and 8), but the channel five Anne Boleyn drama did it with Anna channeling Cersi which she wasn't like and now drama seems to be doing the same thing and its getting a bit boring to be honest and its also a little concerning as its hinting to me they are lacking imagination and just copying thrones which might mean characters doing things they historically didn't.
I'm also curious (and a little nervous) about what they'll do with Jane Grey, and hoping they don't turn her into some boring, stock Protestant Bible-thumper.
I love your videos! Can't wait for your review once the show ends. The fact that this is not based on PG's books gives me hope that it will be at least somewhat decent. THe time period between Mary and Elizabeth becoming queens as well as Edward's reign hasn't really been covered so it will be interesting to see how they portray it.Still I agree that Elizabeth's age is important factor in this story and having her be played by an older actress(I think she might still be 14 at least from what I've heard)takes away from Thomas's creeoy abusive behaviour.I get that it's a sensitive issue so having Elizabeth be played by a teenager might not have worked but they could have at least hired someone in her young 20s?No disrepsect to Alicia I Thun she might make a good Elizbaeth for her later years but yeah. I also saw this interview where the actor playing Thomas describing the ''relationship''between Thomas and Elizabeth as ''complex''and that he believe sthat whle he used her he aslo loved her made me go a bit ''what?!'' Elizabeth was 13-14 during that whole fiasco there's no way Thomas actually genuonely loved her considering she was a child!Unless he was a pedophile which he probably was. I'm just sick and tired of books romanticing his abuse towards her. If Elizabeth ever had a ''crush''on him or whatever(persobally I thunk the only man she was ever truy in love with was Robert)she was still a child and a victim it's def not some torrid forbidden romance. Then again this is the same channel that gave us the Richard III/Elizbateh of York and Henry VII being rapist BS(among other things) so maybe I should be preparing for the worst while expecting the best, imo. very concerning indeed. Ever since they started working on this show, I have been worried about the risk of the Seymour/Elizabeth interaction not being shown as a case of abuse by Seymour.
@@stephanieking4444 Yeah..some of the reviews I've seen do call the relationship inappropriate and the showrunner seems to hate Thomas Semour and is aware he groomed and abused her but again it's one thing to show a 28 year old actress playing young Elizabeth and another to have a younger one do. If they had done the former there's no way there would be anything remotely ''redeemable''or ''complex''in that character. And while the actress might try and play her in a more childish way the visual impact would not tbe the same. There are atcress who look yunger than their years but I don't think that's the case with Alicia, she def looks her age.
Totally being a broken record here, but it is a shame that this seems to be another post Henry VIII production that doesn't utilize Anne of Cleves, who was very much alive (Huge fan of hers, so I have to take what I can get). This could be the perfect chance. unless there's another season in the works and she appears there?
Said this before but I have a feeling they will get superficial aspects of the time period correct but get more abstract things like how people behaved, the culture, the feel etc. entirely wrong and thus completely fail to immerse people ("Look at the shiny, history nerds! Look at the shiny! Now stop criticising us!"). Edward seems like a mixture of Joffrey Baratheon and Draco Malfoy as they appear to be trying to portray him as the cretinous little brother for Elizabeth to constantly appear superior to, in order to make her look better. Lady Jane Grey appears to be whatever the character was called in Game of Thrones redux. Mary I think they're going to whitewash in order to make look like a pure and innocent victim, so a complete 180 of how she's normally been portrayed. Also again, they appear to be making the children of Henry VIII look blameless (sans maybe Edward, but they might make him look like a gullible fool) and that the friction between them is entirely manufactured by the people around them, rather than that friction already existing due to personal and religious conflict and the sharks swimming around them simply taking advantage of that weakness to empower themselves. If they do that, they'll make Elizabeth and Mary both appear weak and feeble, which is ironic since in the trailer they keep overly going "LOOK HOW POWERFUL THEY ARE!!!" which is very unconvincing, like a child stamping their foot shouting "RESPECT MAH AUTHORITAH!" Doomer mode is only mode these days. xD
Interesting time for this to be coming out for me as I'm taking a look at the Seymour Trilogy by Janet Wertman. Having finished the first two volumes, I can say that volume one interested me enough to buy the other two; that I had major problems with plotting and occasional perspective of volume 2 (Wertman was honest about the plotting liberties she took due to the point of view structure she chose, but I still had problems, since it often amounted to conversation about major events, and strategies from odd quarters). I was liking volume 3, but around the time of Thomas Stanley's execution, where I am now, things are starting to dip toward the problems I had with volume 2. But I do like that (so far) both Edward and Mary are depicted as well-meaning, fallible human beings and siblings who care about each other, being torn apart by religion made into politics.
