I've been trying out Adobe Premiere for video editing, and haven't quite mastered it yet so apologies if this one is a bit all over the place with audio balancing and the like (not that I was ever good at getting that right!). I have a few more unscripted videos I can have done as well, but I will probably get to work straight away on the Titanic Rant and have the intro done soon fingers crossed.

@@The_Laughing_Cavalier I think the screenplay is taken from a theatre play, and there are a couple of fictitious scenes. Henry never visited Anne in the Tower! Overall though, I think it is one of the best Tudor dramas, and Burton and Genevieve Bujold are brilliant.😁 You may not agree though!

The costumes for the Anne Boleyn drama don’t look too good, it’s too simple to be worn by a queen (especially for Anne Boleyn, who was very fond of pearls, gold, and furs). Plus the hoods look weird and they should’ve at least tried to decorate it. The costumes for the Elizabeth drama however in my opinion look gorgeous, actually looks like something out of the era, and the hoods look just * *chefs kiss* *
Actually kinda more excited about the Elizabeth one now

"This dude is far too bitter and over the top" - Translation: "He's right but I don't like his opinion, therefore I shall make a meaningless protestation against his presentation style. That will flummox him."
Also knowing Starz Media, they'll blame the death of Amy Robsart on a curse by Anne Boleyn, who survived being executed because some innocent lady-in-waiting took her place and no-one realised because they looked so similar. And then it'll turn out Lady Jane Grey and Edward VI are in love with each other just to tick two boxes at once. Pedro will be the true hero of the story, and will single-handedly defeat the Spanish Armada after realising he is fighting for the wrong side. William Cecil will wear denim.

I'm of mixed ancestry and do not at all appreciate the way some of my folks were treated in the 'good olden days'! Having said that, I'm less than sure that patronizing ’black washing’ will make up for racism past or present. Instead, I wish for a historic series that taught me something about real people in or out of Africa and that gave me an idea what life was like for them.

I definitely agree with you.I am also of mixed race heritage .My grandparents on both sides left the South because of the hatred that they had to live down there. Changing what historical figures looked like doesn't make up for the fact that their grandparents were slaves. I am just wondering what they will do with Washington or even Lincoln. Perhaps they will be changed to Chinese or Japanese actors. Taking liberties on the racial makeup of historical figures doesn't make it so.

As a Black historian of 19th century and early 20th century US history, I find it strange that so many contemporary period dramas are trying to create colorblind casting like we're in a Shakespeare play and not dealing with the lived experiences of real people. While we scream that it's historically inaccurate, more than anything, this practice reduces Black and BIPOC existence to an aesthetic ; a spectacle. Casting an actress of the African Diaspora in a leading role does not equate to intentional activism, nuanced storytelling, or representation.
Still reeling from the financial burdens of the 100 Years War, Henry VIII and his father, alongside Isabella of Castille, set much of the foundation for what would become the Transatlantic Slave Trade. Back then, the racial caste system of today was in its infancy in places like Spain and Portugal.
Why not create stories about real life people of color who existed during these time periods?
Why not create a more nuanced look at Elizabeth's reign and her connection to the slave trade? How did her generals handle the capture of Spanish ship's carrying kidnapped Africans?
Why not cultivate a story about Dederi Jaquoah? A west African trader who spent two years traveling through Tudor England?
Why not create a mini series about great-grandfather of Alexander Pushkin, Abram Gannibal who was kidnapped from his home in Africa (either Ethiopia or Cameroon) and later freed and adopted by Peter the Great, becoming a military leader, celebrated engineer, and nobleman?
How about Anna Kingsley, a West African princess who, after being enslaved, married the wealthiest enslaver in Florida and became a slave mistress in her own right and later became a supporter of the Union cause?
Why not write about the Black cooks, nuns who lived both enslaved and freed alongside white Englishmen?
The answer is simple: these white filmmakers and showrunners believe that activism and reform are surface level aesthetics. They'd rather cast a brown skinned actress and call that diversity than examine the [Eurocentric] stories and narratives they are remaking over and over -- that's not even touching the inequities behind the camera of hiring practices in filming, styling, directing, and creative team members . . .

    • @ariellelionessofYah

I now have many more historical rabbit holes to travel down thanks to your comment. Thank you. And I very much agree. They need to stop retelling the same stories. There’s much more history that would be amazing to put on screen!! I’d like to personally see more of Spain’s history of the traveling to the Americas told through historical drama. There’s some amazing content there!! Along with everything you mentioned.

    • @wiseonwords
      @wiseonwords 2 роки тому

@Sydney Rose - Interesting that you accuse filmmakers of Eurocentricism, yet you yourself are just as Eurocentric in what you propose as a fix. Why your obsessive focus on the evils of European whites? Why not suggest stories about the Arab slave trade or the Ottoman slave trade? Both of these were far more pervasive and brutal than the Atlantic Slave Trade. Or you might have suggested the slave trade practiced by the African kingdoms from the Middle Ages to the 19th centuries? I think you'll find that it was the long-established African Slave trade practised by Africans themselves enslaving other Africans which "set much of the foundation for what would become the Transatlantic Slave Trade," as you put it.
I'm black myself. But I can't stand the moral dishonesty and guilt-tripping that so many black people indulge in when it comes to the topic of the slave trade. We only seem to carry on with the guilt-tripping nonsense with whites. For some reason, Arabs and Turks, whose empires inflicted far worse predations on Africa, get a free pass!

@@wiseonwords take a very deep breath cause you're about to accidentally drown yourself in an ocean of self-righteousness ✨️🌊
1). Slavery that happened in indigenous societies across Africa, the Americas, the Middle East, Oceana, Europe, and Asia typically did bot manifest the same way that slavery in empire-building societies. Indigenous slavery was often based on an "open" system that allowed for social mobility, marriage into the family, and communal integration. "Closed" systems like the ones utilized by the empire-building European, African, Mesoamerican, Arab, and Asian dynasties were perpetual and gave birth to ethnic, gendered, and racialized caste//class systems.
2). Maintaining an empire requires a few fundamental ingredients: two of those ingredients are the exploitation of forced labor and the commodification//control of reproduction.
3). Slavery manifested in a variety of societies and civilizations through warfare and imperial expansion. But the powers behind the Transatlantic Slave Trade specifically targeted African communities who were known for their cultivation of rice, indigo, cotton, salt, and sugar cane. European colonizers exploited their agricultural knowledge, erased their ancestral identities, and industrialized a transatlantic trade of human trafficking.
4). You are HIGHLY miseducated about the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the violence that rippled across the Atlantic world because of it. There are records that reveal how enslavers trafficked more black people to sugar plantations in South America and the Caribbean because the average life expectancy of an enslaved laborer was often less than a year. They were being worked so hard that girls never started their menstrual cycles. In United States, enslaved people (particularly chikdre) were beaten to death so regularly that several states created casual killing laws to protect enslavers and slave mistresses from murder charges. That is not even touching the Middle Passage and the millions of souls who died of disease, wounds, childbirth, starvation, torture, forced drownings, or threw themselves overboard. So . . . yeah it was pretty brutal.
5). Most black folks (including you Dennis) are about 4 to 6 generations removed from the era of slavery. If you look at human trafficking that is currently happening today, they use many of the same politics and practices adopted by the agents of empire. Decolonizing Eurocentrism means we must understand how it came into existence and challenge the prevailing racist perceptions that color the existence of people of color that manifest in medical, legal, academic, environmental, professional, familial, and intimate spaces.
      6. There is no ancestral reclamation or racial reconciliation that is possible WITHOUT confronting and addressing our history. And colorblind casting is NOT addressing that history.
I'd recommend checking out my [working] online bookshop to browse through different areas of study and discourse that will help you (and anyone else who stuck around to read merry-go-round discussion 🖤) dismantle your miseducation about imperialism, white supremacy, and our interwoven, multicolored human condition ✨️ (bookshop.org/shop/neighborhoodhistorian)
For you Dennis, I'd recommend starting with these two books:
📗 "Four Hundred Souls: A Community History of African America, 1619-2019"
📕 "Slavery at Sea: Terror, Sex, and Sickness in the Middle Passage" || Sowande Mustakeem

I have nothing nice to say about the casting of Anne Boleyn and the costuming. The dresses do indeed look cheaply made. Also, I doubt if Anne did wear the iconic B necklace it wouldn't be all the time, especially as Queen with more access to jewels. That aside, if you're going to have her wear the necklace, why make the B and dangling bits look THAT cheap? My B necklace looks like the portraits and I didn't spend quite $30 for it.

    • @katiehanson2290
      @katiehanson2290 3 роки тому +1

I’ve actually been listening to the Six Wives of Henry VIII by Alison Weir and they actually talked about the necklace. Anne was very fond of Initial necklaces and had the B necklace, as well as one that had A and another that was AB. Elizabeth inherited them after Anne’s death. She probably didn’t wear them all the time, but definitely enough that we know that it was a favorite style for her.

Haven't watched yet but this would not surprise me: write up on guardian or some review:
'Elizabeth I is boldly re imagined as non gender conforming trans lesbian . Her council are now bold strong women (TM) of color who see their anxiety disorders and clinical depression not as a medical problem they want cured but an edgy character trait. Lady Burley head of the council is like totally traumatised by hish/they Dudley questioning her lived experience. Elizabeth wins the Spanish armada by a bold mix of being a strong woman (TM) who's already perfect in every way and has no character arc of journey cos to suggest a woman's not already perfect wpuld b offensive. ..and a last minute strike by F-35s from the aircraft carrier Queen Elizabeth ii who drop sidewinder on the Spanish fleet.
Philips ii then accepts he is part of the patriarchy and returns the new world to indigenous people's with apology fir his whiteness and imperialism.
They then all surrender to William Wallace and Scotland is finally free.

Yes, I am planning to do a rant about bad Tudor documentaries at some point but it is low down the list atm.

I looked at the description of the character Pedro and I have a theory that he is based off the real life soldier Julian Romero.
The description of Pedro says that he is a Spanish mercenary who is loyal to anyone and is a good friend of Edward Seymour. Julian Romero is pretty close since in 1544 he abandoned the army of Charles v to serve Henry viii participating in the siege of boulogne and later I fought under Edward Seymour against the Scots at the battle of pinkle. He was also present at the marriage of Mary and Philip and eventually fought at saint Quentin. Depending on the shows timeline hopefully they will show that

    Good evening.
I will be honest - I was in favour of the role of Anne Boleyn to be acted by Jodie Turner-Smith. I was expecting that the use of an actress with a darker skin colour would represent a certain "alien" facture - as Lady Anne had spent many of her formative years in the Royal court of France.
The fact that the mini-series began in the last months of her life meant that my theory had no role in the story.
There was a lot of "ink" used to write about this production, in particular in the choice of Jodie Turner-Smith. She should be congradulated for her courage knowing that her playing this role would cause a controvery.
Notwithstanding the issue of the title character, one should analyse the mini-series on its depiction of historical characters as closely as possible to the real events, as many people will use historical dramas as a method to understand the events - and I will leave it to better people than myself.
    Have a good evening.

That green dress's waistline did nothing for the Anne Boleyn actress. And she's gorgeous, so why?

The majority of black British citizens can trace their ancestry in the UK as little far back as the 1950's, 1960's and 70's when en mass immigration from former colonies to the UK ramped up after the second world war.. I mean given that information, Britain and most of Europe was essentially 100% homogeneous White European in the time of the Tudors, yet Anne Boleyn is black? I can't be the only one to see that's jarringly wrong. Injecting 21st century diversity into a piece of media that portrays events of the past where the ethnic demographics were different than they are today is wrong. You're portraying a false view of history, a view that is factually incorrect. I understand, appreciate and don't have a problem in representing racial minorities in modern media but, when you try to do that in films portraying the past where no racial minorities existed in that time period and location. You're selling an incorrect version of history.
