Few extra notes: - I thought I had put this in the script, but I must have deleted it at some point. Basically, there are a couple of lines from some of the actors that have me worried (I think it was Warwick/Northumberlands one but I can't remember off the top of my head, either him or Ekow Quartey). They said something to the effect of that they were making the drama 'very contemporary' which, as you know, that word is my kryptonite! - I didn't go into the casting of Ekow Quartey since there is no footage of him in costume in the trailer, plus I didn't know anything about the role he was playing at the time of recording. Basically, he will be playing a chap called 'Pedro de Negro' who was a Spanish soldier serving in this time period against the Scots and was knighted by Somerset. As can be seen by his name, there are suggestions he may have been of African descent and, yeah, I can definitely understand this. Honesty, this seems fine to me since it is clear they have actually tried with the casting this time compared to say the Anne Boleyn mini series Channel 5 did. I will see how it goes when the series releases though since the historical Peter died of the Sweating Sickness some years before Mary took the throne, yet he appears to be part of her entourage in the behind the scenes picture. - As mentioned in the text, I made a bit of a cock up with the bit on the Gentleman Pensioners, but I will make sure to go into that if I need to talk about them again in a future video. Normally, I would have re-recorded that segment or something but I was so far behind on this one, I just wanted to get it done and move on to my next projects. - Whilst I do praise this, never forget that we are dealing with Starz Media, so at the back of my mind I am still worried. However, I felt that they have definitely tried this time around and that is worthy of praise. - There aren't really many portraits of Elizabeth from before her accession (there is the one shown in the video from when she was a young teenager towards the end of Henry's reign and I think one from Mary's reign of her in a black dress?) so I inevitably ended up using one or two that might not quite fit in this period.
Hey there’s somewhat new UA-camr who has been doing reviews for the adaptations of Henry’s wives! m.ua-cam.com/channels/sSbicF6ZVpcCBJT8g0FNfA.html Enjoy the link!
@@grodriguez7225 Yes, I am aware, she has been a long time sub of mine and I have recommended her videos in a few of my community posts. She will probably surpass me in subs soon!
So are they just going to ignore Poor Anne of Cleves, who already suffers from only having the bare minimum of appearances in Tudor dramas? Either way, I'll be sure to check it out, but still...
There is also the early 20s Jean Simmons playing Liz from preteen to 25 in YOUNG BESS. Deborah Kerr would have played Liz if the production was filmed earlier in the 1940s, but delays pushed it to the early 50s and by then it was decided that Kerr was too mature, so she got Katherine Parr instead.
In YOUNG BESS Somerset was the baddie, with Thomas’ unsavory relationship with Liz treated as this big doomed romance (the players Stewart Granger and Simmons were real life lovers and married for a time).
I might actually watch this. Depending on how things go. Been waiting for this video and I’m glad you finally got something that didn’t make your blood boil.
This is a wonderful overview and I agree with pretty much everything you said! Just a small correction though (if it hasn't been said already), Robert is not John's second son but rather his sixth. He had five older brothers before him: Henry, Thomas, John, Ambrose and another Henry although Thomas and the first Henry died when Robert was young and John died from the effects of imprisonment while the second Henry was killed fighting for Philip II, giving the impression that Ambrose and Robert were John Dudley's first two sons by the time Elizbaeth is queen. But Robert was actually quite low on the totem pole of importance for John's sons at the time which is probably why he was allowed to marry Amy Robsart, who was far lower than him in terms of the social hierarchy - his father probably indulged him!
I was listening to an audiobook today that said "strangely , Catherine Par participated in the early morning teasing". Lol that's not strange at all. Seymour thinks "hmm..don't want the wife to catch me perving on the teenager I'm in loco parentus to cos you know ..if I portray it as just screwing around playfully and get her on board...then one day if she catches me going further I can fob it off as no biggie just usual stuff"
I would really have to sit down and have a good think since (even outside the Tudor period) nearly all period dramas of late have been rather bad at history!
John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland's eldest son was John Dudley, Earl of Warwick. He participated in his father's attempted coup and was condemned to death, but was released and died shortly after leaving the Tower , passing the title to his brother Ambrose. Robert was the third son and Guildford the fourth. There was younger brother, Henry.
Do you think you might give us your thoughts about the BBC's "The Boleyns: A Scandalous Family"? The costumes, at times, made me cringe (one gown in particular looked like one from "The Tudors"). There also was a strange habit of mashing separate historical comments into one but I did appreciate the examination of the Boleyn family in context with Anne's rise, reign and call.
I have not seen it I am afraid, although I did react to the announcement: twitter.com/Laugh_Cavalier/status/1405838565066612738 My parents saw it and were not keen on it from what I can gather. I am considering doing a rant about Tudor documentaries in general so I might cover it then.
I really liked the actress playing Anne (a Frenchwoman, bien sur). And I know exactly which gown you are referring to:) But on the whole, I thought the concept of dealing with Anne Boleyn through the influence of her family was a refreshing re-look at her story.
Nice to hear from you again Cavalier also what is this a good looking drama at least in terms of costums and mostly decent casting, Cavaliers agents to make good dramas must finally be getting into the right places. Also wasn't expecting 2:04 with the Love Live girls but not bad.
Hi, I love watching your videos they really helped me start uploading my own Tudor videos, along with another called Alice of Sherwood, I was also shocked that the becoming Elizabeth thing was quite good because that’s not what I expected from starz
Sincerely hope that you get to see the Tudor army on screen in this series. I especially hope they also show proper formations and tactics. I feel the same way about the Byzantine army, which to date, has only been seen in a West German film called Kampf un Rom.
It’s nice seeing another video from you. Your videos always cheer me up and make me laugh. Anyways seeing this, I might actually want to see this series now. Let’s hope it actually lives up to expectations and not be like the Spanish Princess (hopes springs eternal)
The actress reminds more of Mary than Elizabeth. 🤷🏻♀️ I think “Edward’s” pointed chin echoes Edward VI’s chin enough to read well. 👍🏻 The last lady-bunny that went through the wall was Anne of Cleves yeeting out of that marriage with her head. 😏 Bella Ramsey!!!
You would think that having been the uncle of her least favorite stepmothers, Mary would have looked at the duke of Norfolk and been like “ screw him”. She must have felt generous that day

...gloomy day, no strength... *The Laughing Cavalier uploads video* Oh, lovely day. Edit: More armor on soldiers seems better than less than half armor alike that of "White Queen".
With the armour, not for this time period though since, as one other poster pointed out, they are re-using a lot of 15th Century armour, which would be quite out of date. Not to mention, most Tudor soldiers would not be wearing full sets of armour at all by this point.
You could be on to something there, also perhaps confirming they are re-using more Spanish Princess stuff since I am sure I saw the flag in that series.
Glad you're back. I am worried about this series. The presence of the person who directed ''The Other Boleyn Girl'' (2008) doesn't bode well. That film featured costumes which were close enough to accuracy, but the characterisation and plot were awful. I'm also concerned about the fact that this series is being produced in an era which rejects more ''out of the box'' views on history and where conservative anti-feminism is making a harsh come back. Logically all of that means script writers sticking to the traditional dis-informative representation of Elizabeth as someone who desperately wants to lean on a man and seeks one to lean on but ends up having to settle for the role of Virgin Queen because of romantic disappointment.
The plainer dress on Jane might be because Jane herself said that she emulated Elizabeth's "maiden shamefastness" when it came to fashion. This was alluded to in Helena Bonham Carter's version where she deliberately only wore black, much to her mother's irritation.
Oh, I hope it ill be good. I loved the white Queen, did not like the White Princess, Hated the Spanish princess and I love Bella Ramsey, so I hope I will love it.
I have a feeling that they are distorting Elizabeth's hearing in this series. They will surely make her enter into a relationship with Seymour or Robert and a bad sister. Most of the recent movies and series ruin Elizabeth's hearing.
I’m a bit apprehensive about this series. Too often, the writers will push their politics instead of writing the accurate story. Especially if the BBC are involved.
