This is the most "REAL" car saving channel on the planet. The level of determination spent on trying to get any of the cars running in the past is beyond 95%of what any skilled person would do. With these guys its not just a job or something to do , its a labor of love, skill, years of experience, hard work, and determination. Most would have thrown their hands up after 15 minutes and walked away. Its obviously a very personal thing with them. Hi 5 100% all the way. Not every car is salvageable and thats a fact but until these guys say its dead,it surely isnt!
Lance & Wyatt, I am 83 and my background is filled with working with motors and heavy equipment. I was an engineer so I had access to laboratories where I was able to test products and procedures. I would like to share with you some successful information that I used in my work. I would have started trying to break the engine loose using Kroil Penetrant, which breaks down rust and carbon. I would have used hypoid gear oil to coat the cyl walls lightly instead of trans oil. Soaking the rings with Kroil for a minimum of 12 hours may be necessary to dissolve the carbon. A large volume of Kroil must be used to reach the entire ring
I'm over here in Sweden watching an old Saab getting pulled out of a tree in Texas. Very cool rescue 😊 Those old Saabs are rare even over here these days

Guys, the last minute you got it running. She's a runner. Don't end this here, need a part 2. If that was in San Diego, I'd be all over that car. It's sweet looking and pulling that baby V4 looked real easy. It's worthy of buying new rings and head gaskets.
I am Very Excited about this vehicle. I believe it is a 1966 Saab. I absolutely love the grill on this vehicle. Hopefully, you can get it running and restore the original white paint color.❤
TR, the SAAB 4 strokes did not freewheel. That only happened on the 2 cycle motors to keep the engine from starving for oil. Also fourth gear at a 1-1 ratio would be easiest to turn the motor through the axels. Those tree guys are impressive! They dropped them where they wanted! Love the whole video!
They carried over the same trans into the V4 models, the freewheel lever is still there under the dash. A lot of people who bought a V4 to replace their 2 stroke back in the day preferred keeping the freewheel engaged so it was more familiar to drive
Its awesome to see a man and his son being able to work together so well ....my dad passed many years ago and didnt ever get to spend this kind of time working with him ...i regret that still.....congratulations to u men for having a great relationship like this ....!!
Ain't never seen nobody pull start a car engine like a lawnmower! Great idea, I'll file that in the old memory cabinet. Love this video, I do think it stuck rings, enough heat, and she should break ree and run for ya'll! Thank ya'll for making family friendly car videos that I can watch with my 3 yr old grandson! He says, ya'll are the best! I agree. God bless ya'll
S = Save A = All A = Available B = Basket Cases Thank you both for your Godly Karma, Love from London, England. My uncle had several V4’s in the 60’s and Seventies.
Head gaskets, freeing up the rings, or even adjusting the timing may help get that engine to light off and stay running, I'd love to see it come back on the channel sometime cause its a really nice piece of automotive history. Great work as always guys...also thanks for takin care of that '35 Ford so Derek could come get it, looks real nice with the shine juice and VGG logo on it :D
The V4 in the SAAB is actually a Ford engine, a 1,5 liter. The same engine was in the Ford 15M (Taunus I think) from the 60's. Also you got the Ford Transit that had the V4 2.0 liter engine. But those engines are very rare to find today tho. When searching for engine parts, you guys should look for old British or German Ford's.
A bit over 30 years ago my brother and I got a contract to do a property cleanup for a bank on a foreclosure. There were 7 heavy trucks and 29 cars on the property including an old SAAB like this one. It was in so deep and was so rusted that it literally got pulled in half when we were pulling it out. The body twisted popping out the back window which shot about 10 feet straight up in the air and landed On a large pile of softball to football sized rocks right next to the car and somehow didn't break. For the fun of it we tried and succeeded in getting the engine to start and run. We sold the engine and transmission to a guy who used it to build himself a brush buggy.
I remember this car. When you and your dad were pulling all those cars with rats. Etc. Don’t remember you getting it out. Starting to come back to me I remember you had a tree man at the site. That was a job getting it out. And I’m sorry on the non start. Thanks for sharing! 💯👍👊
I’m a mechanic and I know the feeling of trying to make it work you guys put to much work in this car thanks for trying hopefully you guy come back to it later on
What a challenge! Just to get it literally out of those trees! I’m betting that this one is going to be back some day. You folks are too tenacious not to see it run! I’m sure you will conquer the Saab from the Trees! Thank you for a Great video!
My dad bought a '67 Saab 96 brand new (up in Michigan) --- Same V4, same freewheeling trans --- he drove it for years and years with few problems --- now I live here in Arlington, TX and I was surprised to see this rare old Saab on your channel --- I saw German Fords with the same (or similar) engine in Germany when I served in the US Army there in the late 1970's --- A very strange car compared to the usual big V8 cars most Americans drove back then --- I enjoy the vids you guys make !!
The V4 in the SAAB is actually a Ford engine, a 1,5 liter. The same engine was in the Ford 15M (Taunus I think) from the 60's. Also you got the Ford Transit that had the V4 2.0 liter engine. But those engines are very rare to find today tho.
Love this episode! Haven't forgotten about making the rings from the wood you sent me from this rescue, just been swamped with work. Hopefully, I'll find some time this winter to make you all some.
The V4 was Saab's first 4-stroke engine, but it was actually made by Ford in Germany. The "Cologne" V4 used in the Taunus 12M, 15M and 17M is quite different to and more reliable than the "Essex" V4 from the Zephyr/Zodiac and Transit that is more familiar to the average British driver.
Parts for the SAAB is no problem Speedparts in Sweden have parts for all Saabs. If you want to put a 2.8 V6 so is that posible option. This Saabs was a very comon car here in Norway and Sweden. Good look with it.
I had a motor similar that needed more speed from the starter. I isolated the rest of the electrical system and gave the starter 24 volt. It started up fine after that
Thanks for rescuing vehicles that have been abandoned. I live in an area that gets pretty cold in the winter. A couple of times over the years I needed more cranking speed than my battery would supply. I would hook a second 12V battery in series with the first. The 24V would really spin that starter and was safe for a short time with standard ignitions. Once I got it started and warmed just a little I'd shut it off and unhook the 2nd battery. Just an idea to spin that engine faster for a short time. Good luck!
Inline two 12v batterys together and shoot 24v to it that'll get her spinning, man i dig yalls determination I'd cute my lose soon as I walked up to the tree 😅
I owned one bought new in ‘72. Kept it until 2000. Rebuilt engine in 1991. Bought a 2nd one in 1988 sitting on blocks in a backyard. Bought for $50 and a week later I drove it away was a great 2nd car. I could have easily gotten the car going once extricated. Those cars had/have soul.
Hey folks, just found yall on u-tube . I'm in Tyler, but lived around Valliant, millerton Okla all my life. Here in Tyler at Watkins Logan Veteran's nursing facility. I was married into the Collier family from Clarksville.i will be following you. Good to see people from there. Good luck
Great video guys. I think this is the same V4 which Ford used in the Ford Corsair here in the UK. It was a very good engine I had in a 1.7 litre and 2.0. The 1.7 use to have condenser problems in the distributor which broke the spark down, went from Fomoco to Lucas no more problems. Head gaskets are still plenty available I think....Anyway take care (UK)
Just a small but friendly correction. The V4 was produced both in an German and Birtish version. As far as i remember, not many parts was the same on these engines. The easiest way to diverse was is to look at the distributor. On the German version it was placed at the rear, on the British it was in the front. Ford named the British version V4 and V6 "Essex" and the German was called "Cologne"
Lucas electrics better than FoMoCo? That’s funny. Ford did makes some crappy ignition modules over the years but Lucas couldn’t even make a decent fuse box or proper connections.
The V4 Saab used was a 1.5 liter. There were some modifications Saab engineers did to it, but otherwise all Ford. My father has a 1974 orange 96 L. Everyone should drive a 96 if they have a chance, such a fun experience.
This may have had an option that allowed the drive wheels to "free-wheel" like a bicycle also, there was also an option that prevented the car from rolling backwards on a hill. I believe this car has both and there's no damage.. You just need to get past these two options.
Those old saabs had a freewheel. That is why it holds in one direction and spins in the other. My father drove them on his paper routes in the 60s. He always had the 2 cycle engines.
I had one of those long time ago, very simple to service since the front can be removed so there is lot of space. I replaced the 1500 cc motor with a 1700cc, it just required new links to the carb and a cooling lid for ford 17m to stoo it from boiling. Things to know is that the key lock the gear to reverse and it has freewheel so you can move the wheels in one eirection.
Love the video. When you have engine out you could have valve seat grind, piston out and free up rings. I am sure you had used some kind of gasket maker sealant. Great work though.
You guys are amazing. As soon as you had issues with the head bolts I would have sent the car to the salvage yard. To be honest, I would have looked at the trees and given up right there.
Those cars have a centrifigal (however you spell it) clutch, kinda works like a golf cart. That's why you couldn't compression start it. Great video :)
My dad bought me a Saab when I was in high school and living in Alaska back in the late 70s, it was like a 1967 or so model and to me looked like a pickle on wheels. It was kind of cool to me but I was way too embarrassed to drive it to school so I told him no way, sell it, I ain't driving it lol.
Little V4 engine was used in the Ford Transit van here in the UK 60’s and 70’s. I think they did a 1700cc or 2000 cc version. Great little vans though😁👍
Brings back memories. In Dallas I had to work on one back on the 70's, a clutch job. Easy to work on. But no A/C, so hell in texas summers. BTW that hairy vine growing up the tree truck is POSION IVY ! Don't get near it.
That was really cool!,my sister carol won a car like this in 1967 on a coloring contest on the Mr goober show, she also won a battery powered convertible, the sabb was sold to a cousin
