The average American consumes 133 pounds of flour per year. Let that sink in. What we may not realize is that every time we eat white flour, we are harming ourselves. The starch in common wheat, typically known as modern dwarf wheat, raises your blood sugar more than table sugar! Eating a diet high in carbohydrates may affect not just your waistline, but also your brain function, energy, immune system, healthspan, and more.
In this episode of my new Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about how and why to consider giving up bread for 30 days. We discuss why our modern wheat is not a good food choice on a daily basis, how to pause on eating bread for a month or more, why certain kinds of bread may be a better choice than others, questions from our community, and so much more.
Dhru Purohit is a podcast host, serial entrepreneur, and investor in the health and wellness industry. His podcast, The Dhru Purohit Podcast, is a top 50 global health podcast with over 30+ million unique downloads. His interviews focus on the inner workings of the brain and the body and feature the brightest minds in wellness, medicine, and mindset.

I gave up bread & sugar to see if it helped my arthritis...it did wonders, & the neuropathy in my fingers & toes went away too. I "fell of the wagon" when I wanted a hot dog one day...one lead to another the next day...
Now I'm searching the connections to hypothyroidism & diabetes due to the debilitating depression, apathy, anxiety, & brain fog. Things HAVE to change for me.

I have crohns and i recently had a flare and tests showed my liver is slightly enlarged. I am overweight so i went on a healthy diet. No more fast food, bread i will go a week or more without and then have a slice eventually. And my stomach is becoming flatter. Now when i eat i dont feel bloated and the food settles in my stomach. A lot less heartburn. I will keep doing this

I stopped eating bread in Jan 2013, and I finally began to get rid of the IBS & IBD I had developed over time. Inflammation gradually reduced, and so did the assistant pain of arthritis and fibromyalgia. My ability to ambulate returned and I began to be able to perform simple physical rehabilitation exercises. There is NO MAGIC.

no celiac disease here but 3 yrs ago I realized I am gluten sensitive ever since I came to another country that produces a lot of wheat based food... i had inflamed goiter while eating pound cake and croissant for a week, I got lots of rashes after eating lots of donuts and noodles...and I even got dizziness and vit deficiency after eating pizza and flatbread...after doing elimination and introduce sensitivity testing, Culprit: gluten. After taking out gluten or modern wheat based food, never felt better and healthier 😊 AND, I never had these sensitivities in my homecountry, where almost all wheat is locally produced the old way...😅

I gave up bread when lockdowns started in March 2020, and my IBS cleared up completely. Also lost 10 pounds, when most people were gaining. 😊. This past Christmas though, I bought a panettone and excellent fruit cake, and also made shortbreads, in anticipation of having holiday visitors. Ha! We were in lockdown again, so I ate them all. What a learning experience! No, I cannot eat gluten!

See the answer would be different for the person, time, location, budget....

But I was off bread for about two weeks by accident and my body responded in a beautiful way, now listening to this video let’s me know it was the bread.when I ate bread it made me crave more bread and I just wanted to eat junk food later. I developed many food allergies till I coul only eat a few things. They stopped when I healed my leaky gut. 21 one days of only vegetable juices along with lots of chicken bone broth. And it healed. I can relate how bread and flours are a cause of leaky gut and therefore the allergies I had in the past. Now all gone, my bad I am again eating bread and pastries once in a while and for sure I notice some inflamation but nothing compared to when I was doing really bad in the past, before my gut was healed. Thank you for all the data, I wish more doctors and nutritionist were informed and updated on how important to our health as you said what we eat: "Food is medicine" or it well may be the cause of diseases. Everything you say really speaks to me. I started looking more carefully at what i was eating after my gastro anthérologue doctor told me there is nothing to do with my chronic diarrhea and stomach pain. Her only answer was, your fibroscopy and coloscopy are clear, you just have to live with it.
I refused to accept that and looked for myself and reversed everything changing what I eat going on Keto.

I believe it's the wheat gluten. That is even in a lot of non bread products like gummi bears also an ingredient in barley-based products, including malt, food coloring, malt vinegar, and beer. Someone told me it acts as a binder to hold foods together.
I feel that in breads, especially if the flour has been bleached and when combined with other things like preservatives and other additives the combination is lethal.

Mark, everything you do is fantastic, but as a fan I noticed that you seem kinda down lately. Your gestures, energy, even laugh seems concerning compared to your usual exited power full state.
You changing the world on a massive scale every day, and we obviously need you in a best emotional and energetic shape possible.
Maybe you need a vacation, or to focus on yourself, or to meditate more, or you need some support from community because you took too much, and there's overwhemengly lot happening, either way if you need support from your community, or to take a break from producing content we are all on your side
So do what you gotta do man, I'm from Russia and maybe my text seems weird in English, but I hope you'll get better whatever is going on in your life right now
Wish you very best, also thanks for transforming life's in every country, for your outstanding books and applieble recepies, you contributed so much to my personal philosophy of eating, that its impossible to find better "food doctor" than Dr. Mark Hyman

I’ve noticed that someone who slows their speech so internationals can listen, possibly reinforcing what English they already know, are clearly highly motivated, perhaps in family and friend groups to watch succinct/watch on a break topic specific info packed videos, and subscribe in groups and comment.
You are as newsworthy. Only an English speaker with patience for the full bloom might carve out 30-60 min.
This interview alone is easily 10-12 short videos, even if it takes 30 days. Yes, there is a channel that hosted a 30 days series, to go in depth.
Kindly share with Dr Bredesen who hasn’t achieved the following he deserves by not breaking down his lectures/interviews into symptom/problem and suggestion/solution.
Determined searchers are desperate for answers. You have so many. The book sales and invitations to speak will follow in streams. The ocean is made of many streams, I know you know.

Dear Dr Hyman, all of what you say is 100% true and does not warrant any comment. Allow me a suggestion for a topic you might make a clip about: Western societies are used to consume alcohol on a daily basis, not nessecarily do get drunk or so. But there are a few dinners without a drink before or after. For not so fit and healthy people who do this over many years, this is, I believe, a major promotor of insulin resistance and its gruesome consequences and even with an otherwise more or less clean diet, it prevents the body to go into ketosis and use finally fats as fuel as its designed to do. As well it preoccupies the liver with toxin removal and suspends the metabolizing of fats by the liver. So any fat one eats before drinking and at least 20h after drinking will forcebly get stored as body fat. Well if you have a drink or two daily there is littarally no chance to burn fat no matter if you exercise and if the diet is more or less ok. Simply to limit the consumption frequency (not quantity) of alcohol to once a week max. will make major improvements. However of for a metabolic make-over a period of at least 6 month zero alcolhol is needed. What do you think?

The flour isn't white it's bleached. It didn't come from France it's done right here in America
After it's bleached it's enriched with synthetic nutrition enhancers along with preservatives, additives, flavorings, sodium and sugar. Flip any bread over and read the ingredients. Almost all will say bleached and enriched.
      Like "fortified with" on cereals.

Excellent Question: I was thinking the same: Is the flour in Europe the same as in the US - can they be compared? There is an array of different breads in Switzerland: Rye, Spelt, Millet - all with the added yeast-free option of sourdough culture.. I guess I'd be hard pressed to find those breads in the US.
I was in the UK couple yrs ago and went "off grid" (no electricity - hence no fridge) and was looking for a German Pumpernickel style bread (as it keeps for longer due to the sourdough process) and had a hard tome finding that in Scottland... so not sure ALL breads and flours are the same...

As a filler to my healthier eating (veg as main an grass fed meat an fats as side) I made an apple butter an use lightly salted rice cakes to fill up instead of buttered bread or straight rye or pumpernickel.
I've been scammed by a pumpernickel company that used Carmel coloring an other bad ingredients. I did not see the inside of the bread which was a light brown. Grrr.
I moved to a small town with limited food choices with an Amish family on a hobby farm. Garden, 5 pigs, 50 chickens 7 ducks 2 dogs and a small pond with 8 trout. But we get alot of white bread for free from a place that throws out food near expirations.. they don't make bread and in a chef an pastry chef living in a camper getting water from an unobstructed water source on the top of a mountain in nc
Did the Dr do a rice cake video?...
