The average American consumes 133 pounds of flour per year. Let that sink in. What we may not realize is that every time we eat white flour, we are harming ourselves. The starch in common wheat, typically known as modern dwarf wheat, raises your blood sugar more than table sugar! Eating a diet high in carbohydrates may affect not just your waistline, but also your brain function, energy, immune system, healthspan, and more.
In this episode of my new Masterclass series, I am interviewed by my good friend and podcast host, Dhru Purohit, about how and why to consider giving up bread for 30 days. We discuss why our modern wheat is not a good food choice on a daily basis, how to pause on eating bread for a month or more, why certain kinds of bread may be a better choice than others, questions from our community, and so much more.

I gave up bread & sugar to see if it helped my arthritis...it did wonders, & the neuropathy in my fingers & toes went away too. I "fell of the wagon" when I wanted a hot dog one day...one lead to another the next day...
Now I'm searching the connections to hypothyroidism & diabetes due to the debilitating depression, apathy, anxiety, & brain fog. Things HAVE to change for me.
I read your comment, I believe you should not eat bread and sugar. Try and find a diet more fat, avocado with mayonnaise and seafood, vegetables, I also know it’s not affordable for anybody. 🇸🇪
Get tested for heavy metal poisoning. Especially if you’re 40+! I am pretty sure I’m positive af for cobalt poisoning from a titanium implant and I am SO sick. _Mah brain no more function ever good again._

I have crohns and i recently had a flare and tests showed my liver is slightly enlarged. I am overweight so i went on a healthy diet. No more fast food, bread i will go a week or more without and then have a slice eventually. And my stomach is becoming flatter. Now when i eat i dont feel bloated and the food settles in my stomach. A lot less heartburn. I will keep doing this
Your slogan ' food as medicine ' is game changer.I came across it when i had no health issue ( at least i didn't feel or reported to me ) when i came across very serious CVD issue , i got motivated by your slogan.I Cut down processed/inflammatory items.Without any bodily medical intervention , only with tablet i was able to manage sever life threatening CVD condition. Many many thanks for your invaluable inputs on this channel.
I just started eating bread again after stopping for 5 years but it is homemade sourdough with Einkorn and spelt flower. I don’t seem to have any issues and it isn’t spiking my blood sugar in small amounts toasted out of the freezer.
I have given up white flour and bread in January, six months later- I feel so much better and have lost 20 lbs, don't have the afternoon slump anymore, and my mental health has improved as well
What about sourdough bread?
What about Ezekiel flourless bread?
I stopped eating bread for 60 days and lost 12 pounds in 2 months. Now, 90 days into it, i've lost 22 pounds but eat now only Ezekiel Bread in small amounts :-)
I have stopped eating bread, all wheat products, all grains, rice , sugar, and starchy vegetables since October 2020
What do you eat instead of them?

Rice and starch are great to eat. Just listen to the starch doctor Dr. McDougall
I stopped eating bread in Jan 2013, and I finally began to get rid of the IBS & IBD I had developed over time. Inflammation gradually reduced, and so did the assistant pain of arthritis and fibromyalgia. My ability to ambulate returned and I began to be able to perform simple physical rehabilitation exercises. There is NO MAGIC.
I stopped eating bread about 4 weeks ago and I have noticed my stomach is much more settled. Bread is something the whole world eats more or less. It was not easy to stop, but it was easier than stopping sugar.
damn, i stopped sugar relatively easy... but damn for me is hard to give up flour
Same here! ❤
❤Yes 🤙🏏❤️👏All true greetings 🫂
From 🇱🇰 Sri Alanna I play cricket again thanks ❤All
I have stopped eating bread and the health benefits is enormous. Thanks 🙏🏾 for your insight. I am not going back to bread.
I own 6 bread machines. I love making and eating bread daily. My doctor wants me to stay away from alcohol. No problem as long as I can keep my bread.
no celiac disease here but 3 yrs ago I realized I am gluten sensitive ever since I came to another country that produces a lot of wheat based food... i had inflamed goiter while eating pound cake and croissant for a week, I got lots of rashes after eating lots of donuts and noodles...and I even got dizziness and vit deficiency after eating pizza and flatbread...after doing elimination and introduce sensitivity testing, Culprit: gluten. After taking out gluten or modern wheat based food, never felt better and healthier 😊 AND, I never had these sensitivities in my homecountry, where almost all wheat is locally produced the old way...😅
I gave up bread when lockdowns started in March 2020, and my IBS cleared up completely. Also lost 10 pounds, when most people were gaining. 😊. This past Christmas though, I bought a panettone and excellent fruit cake, and also made shortbreads, in anticipation of having holiday visitors. Ha! We were in lockdown again, so I ate them all. What a learning experience! No, I cannot eat gluten!
Here in Italy we have the "Three 'P's": Pane (Bread), Pizza, Pasta. You could easily add the fourth, Panettone around Christmas! I would like to take the 30 day challenge.
I too recently quit eating bread, pasta and oats and can a massive difference with my IBS. Bloating, stomach cramps and feeling groggy seems to have settled a bit!

After having read more comments I decided never more bread. I don’t like it very much, so I will try without. I am sure the flour is not the same that we had 40 years ago. 🌹

I have been listening to & learning from Mark Hyman for decades! Appreciate you/him very much.
I would like to say that Dhru also significantly adds to these discussions by the EXCELLENT questions he asks! Two very intelligent, competent, experienced, articulate --& best of all, in my considered opinion--genuinely caring men.
Grateful for you. Please continue your great work. And you both look very healthy k k
You can really see, based on questions and comments, just how addictive bread and flour is. People will negotiate, beg, plead, and argue not to give it up. That, in and of itself, should be enough to try to kick it.
I crave bread more than sugar
B B6 j
it's not all of the puzzle, in some countries in some families wich I see by my eyes, people despite having bread in their culture do not have that much money to buy other food groups for their family members so they thrive on bread and white rice, is it an addiction?is it the best choice in specific moment in your life? See the answer would be different for the person, time, location, budget....
Thank you Dr Mark Hyman for health insight on effects of wheat.
I am dropping wheat for the next 30 days.
Thank you for the information! I am on day 5 with no bread !
You inspire me ! 😊
Thanks doc for the advice because I love fresh bread, but I had start to notice things were starting to happen with my. Blood pressure, gain lots of weight and would get headaches.never ate bread when I was younger and my blood pressure was never over 120/70, now I am having trouble trying to control it. But I was off bread for about two weeks by accident and my body responded in a beautiful way, now listening to this video let’s me know it was the bread.when I ate bread it made me crave more bread and I just wanted to eat junk food later. Again thanks for the advice the headaches stop also.

@@ArcoZakus Ok, conventional bread. The breads that he’s describing are dense European breads that Americans wouldn’t even recognize or that are being asked about in the comments. 😉
At 70 years old I was diagnosed with Celiac earlier this year. After 20 years with a fibro/CFS diagnosis. Several months of gluten free is not improving my health yet. Time will tell.
I’ve found that the seeds and nuts in bread were something that I was sensitive to.
Wheat flour Bread would always make my mouth tingle and the back of my throat itch. I haven’t eaten bread for 2 weeks now.
What about sprouted grain bread, is that any better than regular white bread?
removing bread is hard but you feel so much better for doing it. However, I disagree with his take on lectins. I followed Dr Gundry's lectin free diet and it cleared up a lot of health problems for me. Plant Paradox diet for the win!
Lynn's life bread mixes are VERY expensive. The cheapest bread mix is $12.50 (not including shipping) and it only makes ONE loaf! Fine if you're on a doctor's salary.
I developed many food allergies till I coul only eat a few things. They stopped when I healed my leaky gut. 21 one days of only vegetable juices along with lots of chicken bone broth. And it healed. I can relate how bread and flours are a cause of leaky gut and therefore the allergies I had in the past. Now all gone, my bad I am again eating bread and pastries once in a while and for sure I notice some inflamation but nothing compared to when I was doing really bad in the past, before my gut was healed. Thank you for all the data, I wish more doctors and nutritionist were informed and updated on how important to our health as you said what we eat: "Food is medicine" or it well may be the cause of diseases. What is your opinion on pork fat to cook?
The issues isn’t bread, humans have eaten if for centuries. The issue is wheat is now sprayed with glycol.
I Love Dr. Hyman and I personally agree with the correct way of preparing; cleaning and cooking lectin rich foods and to limit their consumption. This information is important to be knowledgeable about. I’m yet to find the right coconut milk but still, I’d much rather have my real true milk! Mooo 🐮 🥛
In my 60s I’m finally positive bread products aren’t good for me. NO grains at all is what my doc recommends. So I eat a fair amt of nuts and seeds but am finding it difficult to find what to put in the former category without overboarding on protein and fruit. Any brands of ready to eat, tasty foods with good filling calories out there? I’m hungry! 😮
I love to listen to you Fr Hyman.....I took took UBQH 100 mg. Before that I took Coq10 which is better? I stopped when I saw canola oil and sunflower lectithin in the ingredients..
Is it normal to have diarrhoea when giving up bread? My husband stopped eating it two days ago, and he's had this issue. I've never been a fan of bread, but he loves it.
Thanks
how does white soda bread compare to your normal sliced white; would it contain less sugar? or is it better for you?
What about the seeds I use to grow my wheat grass for juice?
This my Day 1!
What about homemade gluten free bread? I use honey in the mix. The flour is a 1 to 1 mix by King Authors or Bobs red mill.
That's awesome. I eat gluten free bread occasionally.
I love sandwiches. I eat a lot less of them than I used to but I eat a lot less in general now. I wish I could bake and if I could that I'd be decent at it. I'm not good at it at all.
I gave up bread for 6 months. Ate sandwiches (2) while vacationing....the joint inflammation returned😢😢
You didn't ask about wholewheat or wholemeal brown bread. Needed clarification.
I stopped eating bread a long time ago!
Dr. what about whole grain and multi-grain bread is it ok to eat one or 2 pieces with butter or peanut butter once a day?
No
Hi, writing from France. How can i find a Functional Doctor in Paris Area?
Everything you say really speaks to me. I started looking more carefully at what i was eating after my gastro anthérologue doctor told me there is nothing to do with my chronic diarrhea and stomach pain. Her only answer was, your fibroscopy and coloscopy are clear, you just have to live with it.
I refused to accept that and looked for myself and reversed everything changing what I eat going on Keto.
I would now want to do more and get checked for heavy metal etc
But I cant seem to find anyone knowing what functional medicine means
I hope you can help or anyone reading me could
There are many Holistic medicine doctors in France also called Naturopathic Drs, Complementary medicine Drs. And likely other descriptions. Sometimes Shaman or Healers. They will all have credentials of multiple types, and have different specialities. Some
Many have been trained in iridology, hydocolon therapy, hypnotism, nutrition, even as a therapist. I'm sure you will find a natural medicine Dr nearby.
Also homeopathic
What about pumpernickel?
I am eating a lot of Water Melon from Melon 1 In Florida do you know if they use Round-up!??????
Every time I eat it my head & stomach gives me problems!!!!!!
Thank u for all the comments. I am not alone. I am addicted to bread, but after today I'm not gonna touch it again.
How’s that going?
Hi Dr. Hyman, From your seed bread recipe, what can I substitute the 5 eggs with? I am vegan. Thank you!
usually ground flax with water can substitute for eggs. Probably 5 TBS but you can look it up
I will start making my bread. I did when I was young, I liked it. But where will I find right wheat ???
But people in US don’t look healthy, they are overweight or obese. 🌹

There's a book on gluten free bread making. It goes in to great detail about the types of flours and how they rise etc.... Food for life has several gluten free, flour less and alternate ingredient options from great quality sprouted grains. (Chia quinoa and millet )
@drmarkhymann I’ll try quinoa, I didn’t make bread earlier, I just cooked them and ate them with butter. For bread I will look in health food stores.

Can anyone tell me Rice Brans oil is it safe to consume?
is this true for all types of bread?
Could you differenciate between flours, breads, yeast and preparation to Europe? We have many styles of flours (rye, spelt, millet - all available as "whole grain ground" hence not "refind") prepared with no yeast but sourdough.. How do they perform in comparison to white bread?
Sourdough has yeast in it. “Wild” yeast. That’s how the bread rises.
Sourdough bread is supposed to be categorized as low glycemic grain. I started baking sourdough einkorn bread at home last year and feel the difference. I also have gluten sensitivity and some autoimmune disorders but I don't get reaction from it. Of course, I should limit the amount to eat but so far so good.
I believe it's the wheat gluten. That is even in a lot of non bread products like gummi bears also an ingredient in barley-based products, including malt, food coloring, malt vinegar, and beer. Someone told me it acts as a binder to hold foods together.
I feel that in breads, especially if the flour has been bleached and when combined with other things like preservatives and other additives the combination is lethal.
There are recipes for gluten free sourdough bread. I have not tried them yet.
Homemade bread has fewer additional contributing factors like preservatives, fillers, flavor enhancers, corn syrup, dyes and isn't put into plastic for long periods of time during transportation and delivery.
I gave up bread two years ago. Nothing at all changed. I lost 2 pounds. I still eat no bread.
Mark, what lunch can I eat today?
So is rye bread okay?
All bread? Is sour dough a better choice or NO bread? I make sourdough
I’m looking for same answer especially when using rye and whole-wheat.
What kind of flour should I buy for my basic cooking?
How can I use chia seeds to replace flour in recipes?
how about wholeweat bread
How about if I made my own bread, would that be better for me. It does bloat me Terribly but I need a substitute…..
What about oatmeal?
I'll be honest.. I don't have any bread in my diet.
Is Ezekial bread okay to eat. I don't buy bread. But I did buy a loaf of Ezekial bread and toast it occasionally to eat. I freeze the rest and use as needed.
It’s bread
Only eating occasionally I don't think is a problem.

Mark, everything you do is fantastic, but as a fan I noticed that you seem kinda down lately. Your gestures, energy, even laugh seems concerning compared to your usual exited power full state.

I’ve noticed that someone who slows their speech so internationals can listen, possibly reinforcing what English they already know, are clearly highly motivated, perhaps in family and friend groups to watch succinct/watch on a break topic specific info packed videos, and subscribe in groups and comment.
You are as newsworthy. Only an English speaker with patience for the full bloom might carve out 30-60 min.
This interview alone is easily 10-12 short videos, even if it takes 30 days. Yes, there is a channel that hosted a 30 days series, to go in depth.
Kindly share with Dr Bredesen who hasn’t achieved the following he deserves by not breaking down his lectures/interviews into symptom/problem and suggestion/solution.
Determined searchers are desperate for answers. You have so many. The book sales and invitations to speak will follow in streams. The ocean is made of many streams, I know you know.

What bread is the best brand to eat in America?
None of them.

Please refer me to a functional physician in Manhattan Beach area. Thanks!
What about Ezekiel Bread?
It is not gluten free but it is the only bread I can eat without a reaction. I am not quite Celiacs but am very gluten intolerant. The grains are whole and my guess is they are just much healthier than other.
I'm a truck driver so I eat sandwiches then what's to replace it to no bread?
I gain weight instantly by eating bread or flour like in pancakes.
Dear Dr Hyman, all of what you say is 100% true and does not warrant any comment. Allow me a suggestion for a topic you might make a clip about: Western societies are used to consume alcohol on a daily basis, not nessecarily do get drunk or so. But there are a few dinners without a drink before or after. For not so fit and healthy people who do this over many years, this is, I believe, a major promotor of insulin resistance and its gruesome consequences and even with an otherwise more or less clean diet, it prevents the body to go into ketosis and use finally fats as fuel as its designed to do. As well it preoccupies the liver with toxin removal and suspends the metabolizing of fats by the liver. So any fat one eats before drinking and at least 20h after drinking will forcebly get stored as body fat. Well if you have a drink or two daily there is littarally no chance to burn fat no matter if you exercise and if the diet is more or less ok. Simply to limit the consumption frequency (not quantity) of alcohol to once a week max. will make major improvements. However of for a metabolic make-over a period of at least 6 month zero alcolhol is needed. What do you think?
Even home made bread.
I stop eating all breads I fill a lot better with at first it was hard but after that I fill good I
I would starve. I ate two tuna sandwiches for lunch, one for supper. Don't hate on me I'm feeling the weight gain now
Beanito crackers or non GMO corn chips. Or make it a salad mix the tuna in lettuce or use gluten free bread or wraps
Dr Hyman, refined WHITE wheat came from ancient Egypt.
I have yet to find any “bread”, anywhere, that agrees with me. Gluten free, paleo alternatives, or even if I make it myself, it still makes me feel like crap. It’s all adulterated and processed garbage.
He’s correct- insulin spikes/resistance is a root cause of so many ailments.
I am in the same boat! I have IBS and even gluten free irritates my stomach, gives me headaches and makes me feel groggy. Plus, once I have it, it makes me crave more and more.

What about almond flour?
Or coconut flour?
When white flour came here from France's royalty there was immediate health crisis...upon which US health officials tried to ban it, but it was too late because it was embraced for taste and very lucrative.
thanks Doctor, with due respect you laugh at times in this discussion that makes me wonder why...for example at 4:16 to 4:20....and 6:43 onward...12:40
Sometimes you just have to laugh when you are talking about all the crap American's eat and the way it affects their bodies.
The flour isn't white it's bleached. It didn't come from France it's done right here in America
After it's bleached it's enriched with synthetic nutrition enhancers along with preservatives, additives, flavorings, sodium and sugar. Flip any bread over and read the ingredients. Almost all will say bleached and enriched.
Like "fortified with" on cereals.
I quit eating bread. Nothing got better and I'm gluten free and diary free. ?
What about processed foods? Sugar? You have to look at your whole diet.
What about gluten free bread?
Don't listen to this guy, bread is fine. It is the staff of life, just get a good brand that is organic and whole wheat or grains. This guy is selling a book that has a bread recipe..he just wants money.
Avoid it because it's highly processed still. Just try to avoid all kinda of bread generally.
@@wheretonext7577 And why should we listen to you? Are you a doctor or director of anything at the Cleveland Clinic?
It isn't the gluten alone (although some people ARE very sensitive), for most of us it is that the flour is a carb that is treated much like sugar by our bodies... Dr Hyman explains this in the video and Dr. Robert Lustig has many excellent videos on the toxicity and dangers of sugar and processed foods
But why is bread so good?
Mark what if you bought wheat from Italy?
Excellent Question: I was thinking the same: Is the flour in Europe the same as in the US - can they be compared? There is an array of different breads in Switzerland: Rye, Spelt, Millet - all with the added yeast-free option of sourdough culture.. I guess I'd be hard pressed to find those breads in the US.
I was in the UK couple yrs ago and went "off grid" (no electricity - hence no fridge) and was looking for a German Pumpernickel style bread (as it keeps for longer due to the sourdough process) and had a hard tome finding that in Scottland... so not sure ALL breads and flours are the same...
@@akosreke8963 What about Rye, Spelt or Millet?
Does Ezekiel bread fall in this category?
My first thought/question lol
Ezekial is the only bread I can eat without a reaction. Very interesting. I am not Celiacs but very gluten intolerent.
summarising "stop eating bread" in just five minutes
Funny..... if it was only that easy. Most of us need the why to understand the reason to make the changes required, hence the informitive video.
As a filler to my healthier eating (veg as main an grass fed meat an fats as side) I made an apple butter an use lightly salted rice cakes to fill up instead of buttered bread or straight rye or pumpernickel.
I've been scammed by a pumpernickel company that used Carmel coloring an other bad ingredients. I did not see the inside of the bread which was a light brown. Grrr.
I moved to a small town with limited food choices with an Amish family on a hobby farm. Garden, 5 pigs, 50 chickens 7 ducks 2 dogs and a small pond with 8 trout. But we get alot of white bread for free from a place that throws out food near expirations.. they don't make bread and in a chef an pastry chef living in a camper getting water from an unobstructed water source on the top of a mountain in nc

Thank you very much 😊 but are you OK? You sounded like you couldn't stop belching and burping 😉😉
Give up sandwiches???
The trick to stop eating bread is to also stop eating breakfast. Breakfast foods are all flour and it's hard to find a replacement...
I lost 40 lbs. On his plan. I eat either oatmeal or an egg with sauted veggies daily for breakfast. It is a treat I allow myself about once weekly to have a bread item.
Hard boiled eggs, cheesy eggs, turkey sausage or mini beef patties and tomatoes. Shredded meat and a little hash browns. Fruit, cottage cheese, even gluten free oatmeal. There's tons of breakfast foods.
I can't eat late in the day. Breakfast is my favorite!!
Eggs and spinach are my favorite for breakfast
If you eat high fiber food with bread you won’t get a blood sugar spike that’s nonsense. Plus there are amazing high fiber wheat free breads out there. Ezekiel bread isn’t worse than sugar that’s stupid.
