Marta Pereira da Costa: Tiny Desk Concert

From the very first beat in this performance, it's clear we are being transported to another time and space with Marta Pereira da Costa's enchanting time behind the Tiny Desk.
Considered to be the first and only woman to professionally master the traditional Portuguese guitar used in fado music, Pereira da Costa caught my attention in a crowded bar in Austin, Texas in 2019 during South by Southwest. In fact, with echoes of Bob Boilen and Stephen Thompson's experience with Laura Gibson that gave birth to the Tiny Desk concert, I also wanted to hear Pereira da Costa's melodic fingerpicking prowess without the noisy crowd.
Accompanied by second guitarist João José Pita Junior and percussionist Pedro Segundo, the trio bridges centuries of history with immaculate playing and plenty of smiles. As Pereira da Costa states in between songs, the entire performance is a musical journey through her homeland, from land to sea and everything in between.
Fado has achieved international recognition outside of Portugal among the musically curious, and I usually associate it with a variety of renowned vocalists. But Pereira da Costa reminds us to pay attention to the accompanists and their instruments for a deeper appreciation of tradition and music made in the moment.

I'm always impressed how NPR's sound engineers manage to get such good, clean recordings.
Absolutely agree:)
I had to go fetch my good headphones and was well rewarded for it
All those books on the walls ain't there for no reason. The room sounds nice.
Its insane how good it is. Even on my macbook its sounds amazing!!
As a retired sound engineer, it all starts with excellent musicians 😊
Portugal is proud of you Marta, Pedro and João. Portugal caralho! ❤

Those who dont like this, congratulations, you know nothing about music. This is an ode to music, a guitar poem, the proud of a nation. Wow
Even the mistake at 00:58 made her smile. What a lovely musician.
So nice to hear the Portuguese guitar outside the realm of fado. It still makes me tear up, *so* beautiful!
So you need Carlos Paredes.
This is still Fado

There's many schools of Fado. Not only the traditional. Around 150 in Portugal and many more in lusophone countries. Traditional fado is imistakable and exists only in certain parts of Portugal. Fado is most commonly used in Portugal by university students and it is used for many different purposes. It is often connected to romanticism and serenading, other takes a more political stance, but it is all in its essence Fado. And this is only traditional Fado. When you delve into the popular, then there is a whole range of music and tradition that not even the most cultured Portuguese can learn it all.

as someone that misses their home country, in my case Portugal, this is beautiful to hear. it is objectively beautiful, but also it brings me back home, i see my family, the hills and the ocean. its so beautiful and nostalgic, sad and happy, saudade ❤ obrigada marta!
The skill involved, I had a little cry.
You got the message 😊 we always feel that guitar deeply in our soul. Impossible not to cry
It's funny how you just listen to the first notes and you can automatically tell it's Portuguese. Coming from a Portuguese person, I guess that's why. I grew up listening to this stuff.
Could it be because of the use of fado guitar?
Portuguese guitar*
For me it was the name and the guitarra portuguesa haha!
@@AlmirSevero1it's still the guitar for fado. :)
And the very last note too! Usually a soft, sometimes firm, but always soulful ...Ssstrummm!
I smiled every minute of this amazing performance. I am an American that appreciates excellent music from any country.
Look for Frankie Chavez. I think you Will like. 👍
True, music it has its own language and is universal.
I'm Portuguese and I've never heard of her before, my fault. Fado is not a genre that I put on my playlist, but as a Portuguese there's something about the portuguese guitar sound that touches me and even makes me emotional, it's like a sound that I can see, I can see the landscapes of my country, I can see the people, I can see moments of my life and of our collective life as a country.
I feel you bro!
I had also seen her only once before. I sort of like fado, but only in small doses, can't stand sad music for long.😁😁 If something a lot more celtic would suit you better, look up a band from Trás dos Montes called Urze de Lume.

Would love to see more Portuguese artists being featured on tiny desk! Love hearing her play a guitarra outside of Fado.

As a maori descendant of Aotearoa (NZ) I can only imagine how we were close to being a Portugese colony for the very first landings on our shores were recorded to be of Portugese sailors. Mind bogling to say the least. Although many did arrive after the Brits had established themselves under immense protest once there true intentions were revealed. BUT, that's a story for another time. Loved the cultural flavour listening to a unique sound from one unique instrument. And are very good at rugby which I find incredibly natural to believe that's obvious! Well done.
Thank you for your kind words! And also to remember the history of our Sailors.
As a Portuguese who has visited your city and NZ's North island, your comment has touched me. How I loved your beautiful land, culture and people. I hope one day you can visit us here in 🇵🇹 where you will be so welcomed!! 🤗♥️🇵🇹♥️ NZ
True. For some reason in Hawaii they have what they call the ukelele, which in Portugal is called Cavaquinho ❤

As a portuguese sailor and having sailed through the pacific, i must say i feel your words in my heart. Hug my brother.
Exquisite session. Music is alive and well in our world. We are so blessed to have Tiny Desk highlight it’s diversity.
I'm in Belgium for 25 years, but I feel as a Portuguese, that the Portuguese guitar, its a heritage of our roots, when we are young we love rock , with the age you change and return to the soul of our guitar, good work Marta! love from Belgium💘
Nice flow from all three musicians. The percussionist was totally on point.

Amazing melody. I'm Brazilian but I have lived in Portugal for a few years now and I haven't seen the Portuguese guitar played here on tv or in the local parties. Really beautiful. Portuguese culture is so rich. Congratulations to all. And thanks to NPR's tiny desk for always bringing amusement to our lives.

What an utter delight! Thank you Tiny Desk for featuring a range of styles and international artists! I'm going to listen to this again right now!
Admittedly, I am musically snooty. Give me virtuosity over anything pop-y. This is so great I’m speechless.

How can one help but smile? This is one of those Tiny Desk presentations that I enjoyed way more than I thought I was going to. Beautifully played and performed, exquisitely captured and recorded, expertly curated. I'm really enjoying the mix of familiar and less-well-known artists.
I love the guitarra portuguese! I also love this fado-like playing without beeing a real fado. I believe I have to go to Lisboa before I die.

I’m grateful today for having been introduced to this music! And yes, it will not capture the attention of highly-glossified music marketed to masses. But I believe that unlike that music, this will persist.

I am Brazilian and see that, sadly, many Brazilians have been brainwashed against everything Portuguese. What a loss... Portuguese music is deeply ingrained in our souls, even for those who don't know it. In its best moments, Portuguese music takes me to the heroic era of the great discoveries and the birth of my own country. Marta and her Portuguese guitar represent this perfectly. Thank you for bringing her to the Tiny Desk Concerts.

What great discoveries?
I'm brazilian and absolutely adore Portuguese music, but what great discoveries? I think we sure have to appreciate all cultures and the influences we have from the colonisation (although our culture is pretty much our own now and heavily influenced by the African culture) but saying "great discoveries" is a bit of an overstatement. 😅 or to better put it, it really depends on the perspective.
