Thanks Kenny. It does put some of my other collecting runs in perspective. I always knew it was going to be a long haul but I'm delighted to have finally licked one of paperbacks most extreme challenges. Glad you enjoyed that collecting journey, another bombshell to come next week🙂
It takes at least 39 years to fully establish for yourself what a "rare" book actually is. 99% of books described as such are not rare, but you don't know that until you initiate your journey. That "Death on the Borough Council" is genuinely rare can now be verified. All the more surprising since it was a "mass market" paperback, not some limited edition. WWII was a rough time for books.
A good point. I'm not sure how many other collectors are missing this one but I'm guessing quite a few.

My copy of Day of the Triffids is from the 1970's. Money was always tight so never really got a proper collection. I tried to get the New Wessex paperback editions of Thomas Hardy when they were issued by Macmillan but I may have missed a few.
Great stuff, I think my first Triffids was the BBC tie in.

It certainly is satisfying completing this particular run.
You should think about replacing the right shelf. All the boards are bended and even the top on. I had the same problem and the shelf broke down out of nothing damaging some of my books
A new library coming in the next two years. The collection as you see it now will actually be moved next week, 2000 new Penguins incoming.....
Funny you mention the book shop in Plymouth. I have also been to that bookshop and had a similar experience as the chap was selling paperbacks 3 for £5 (same price 20 years later!) and I bought an entire bag of SF vintage paperbacks and went back the next day again for another bag full.
He was 3 for £5 when he opened and has recently gone back to that price point. At last🙂

When did they stop putting dust wrappers on their books?
As soon as paper rationing kicked in during the second world war. So about 1941. Things got tough in the UK, the paper got much poorer quality as well.
When you repair the spines, doesn't that diminish the value? I thought collectors were very much against repairs of any kind.
Not at all but it's very much a personal choice.
Just wondering actually, do you own any of the other Penguin imprints? I know you've covered most of the Pelicans and Puffins but I think at one stage there were Peacock, Peregrine and even Ptarmigan books too, just wondered if you owned any of those?
Yes, I have all the Ptarmigans and some Peacock and Peregrine's, but not many.

I read about 150 a year. Not all Penguins of course.
