- Bagging Books Part 1 - Vintage Penguin Paperbacks - Main Series 1 to 50 - These Look Amazing!
In today's video I finally get round to properly bagging up the first fifty or so vintage main series Penguin paperbacks. I am using dedicated paperback bags that I bought off eBay. These all date from the mid 1930's and some have dustwrappers making the job that much harder. See how I got on and what they now look like.

highly reccomend the resealable bags by BCW. they are an absolute game changer especially for those books you plan to take out more often. no more tape snagging the covers!
Thanks. I have some of their smaller resealable bags, I'm going to be getting the larger size soon👍
Fantastic video! I would love a whole series of bagging the collection!
I'll definitely film the books I bag going forward🙂👍
Tip: blue painters tape is also an excellent option for the bags.. it’s very effective and also doesn’t destroy the bags when you try to get your book
Thanks for the tip my friend!
Does give a professional archival look to the collection Jules 👍🏼
I agree, I think the books look fantastic. I'd love to do the whole lot🙂
Came in late . Good job , the bagging gives the collection a " clean " and "professional " look .As well as protection . Wish i had done that to some of my collection .
Thanks Sylvan, yes, they look great🙂
One thing that can assist sliding books into bags and avoiding any damage to the dust jacket or crunching any corners is using a backing board to secure the bag before sliding the book in. You don't need to keep the backing board in the bag once the book is inserted (I don't) but it does help.
I'll bear that in mind but I think the digest bags are going to do the trick!
@@JulesBurt I saw those when I was googling for book bags. I think you're absolutely right.
@Foxxil. Filming a video with them next week 👍
@@JulesBurt I'll be looking forward to it.
@Foxxil. Cool, my next bagging video is over on my other channel, tomorrow.
Got to love the old penguins. Look great. Got a few too. Nice to see Hemingway. Had a beautiful Maltese Falcon by Dashielle Hammett and stupidly gave it to a friend. Best wishes.
Thanks my friend, I do enjoy Hemingway myself. These certainly look great now 👍
Just subbed your other channel Jules. Fantastic ❤👍 And thanks for changing those spellings 😀👍
Thanks Michael! I had to change them. Shame on me, lol🙂
I use BCW bags too for Puffin paperbacks. Same issue that just too small for a few wider books. Storage Boutique do next standard size up 8 x 6 inches. Not currently in stock on Amazon but appear available on their website. However, where you need to fold a flap over it feels less fiddly to do if oversized so a good overlap to tape down.
Thanks Simon, I shall have to check them out. You'd think that the manufacturers would have got some feedback before settling on a size.
I saw this and bought the same as you plus set that is called Digest size for the bigger books thank you for the tips you are making my collection look sop much better!!!! Oh and they are acid free I looked on the Amazon Page and it says they are
Excellent! I have some Digest bags now ready to go! Happy to hear these are acid free.
They really do look great in the bags and nicely protected too.
Have you ever had problems with pests getting at your collection? Moths etc. Or damp. I imagine buying from multiple sources it’s a worry, would be interested to hear your experience.
Not had any problems with insects but historically, I have had a few books get damp, even when they have been stored in a dry environment. It's a tough one but basically, don't shelve books directly against an outside wall and if you have a de- humidifier, it's worth using it. Bagging books can mainly stop all these things.
Those who have not tried bagging yet, try it. Do keep in mind that once you do, there is no going back.
That's what worries me, the rest of the collection.....🙂
I've been thinking of doing the same with my Target Doctor Who books. I was wondering if you'd be willing to try a couple out to see how well they might fit. I think that Evil and Power of the Daleks might be too thick. What do you think?
No problem. you'll need to pick up the digest sized bags as well for the wide/thicker books. The very earliest Target books might need the digest bags as well.
