      I had my Kia Stinger at a Car show. A bunch of people scoffed and said “a Kia?” But the people who know cars tho came over and were chatting and asking questions. Then of course you get the old dudes that walk over and insult you to your face that Kia’s are crap..catch fire etc. Non-Car people don’t know. Even when I had a WRX, I had to explain to people it was a Subaru but A cool one

    Thanks for the very honest assessment. It isn't always easy to criticize the car you researched extensively and bought. Some things cannot be known or determined by a couple of test drives, so your 15K mile insights are very helpful. What hits home here is that at this price point, everything "cars" is a trade-off. The N group seems to have largely nailed the performance aspects of this car, and that seems to hold true when experienced track drivers take this on track. The N division got it right. And as you point, out, the N Division cannot fix the economy car roots in the rattles and cheaper interior materials. I guess if one wanted a more upscale interior in this price ballpark, they could look at the Acura Integra. But we all know that the Integra can't compete in driving performance and dynamics with this. Beyond that, seems like you'd have to look at the GR86/BRZ twins (still not luxury interior and not a backseat very useful for adult passengers) to stay in the ballpark with more performance. After that, likely going to have to move to a Supra 2.0 to get a deluxe interior and some performance, or a BMW 230i type. By then you are not even in the same price range. I'm really intrigued by all the performance aspects of this car, but can't get past the exterior. It feels like the exterior isn't going to age gracefully. Just not a fan of the "Zorro" doors. Maybe if I see one in person in the right color. I love that you can get a great DCT in an engaging car. Have not read great reviews of the Lexus sourced 6-speed auto in the BRZ/GR86 twins. Seems a shame that they could not have borrowed the 8-speed DCT from the Supra 2.0. I suspect that if Acura makes an Integra Type S, based on the Civic Type R, it will also be near impossible to find at a dealer. Keep up the great reports and enjoy the car! Side question, thoughts on headlights?

    • @n-power-automotive
      @n-power-automotive  Рік тому +5

      Thanks for backing up what I was criticizing! It’s definitely not perfect by any means, and other competitors do things better, like you mentioned, the GR86/BRZ, which I’m sure has a more quality feeling interior and of course superb reliability, but as a family of four with the kids being almost teenagers, there’s no way I could get a coupe at this point. And like you said, once you start talking BMW then you’re in a completely different price class. Although there is one BMW that intrigues me that might be close in price as a certified preowned and that’s the M340i/340i, but I’m not ready to go German just yet I don’t think. As far as headlights go, they’re fantastic. They have a very nice cutoff and light the road up really well in my opinion.

      @@n-power-automotive You are doing well to have a super fun car that still works for the family. When my kids were that age, there wasn't anything affordable that was also fun to drive (at least in a brand I could halfway trust). Your next phase will be having teen drivers on your insurance. Then, someday, you can quit worrying about the back seat room and teens on your policy, and choose what you really want. That is kind of how I ended up with my current fun car, a '17 BRZ Limited with performance pack (kids completely out of the nest). Alas, the new gen with all the extra power looks tempting, but also finding that since my wife isn't a manual transmission driver, it stays home on the longer trips where we might want to share driving. This is what piqued my interest in the N cars - availability of a good DCT. My "theory" being that MAYBE, the extra power, acceleration, and multiple personalities of a N car might alleviate some of engagement lost by not having the MT. Boy howdy, the Hyundai "snobbery" you describe shows some real ignorance. One needs only look at the upper tier of Hyundai/Kia to the Genisis brand to see that given more money to play with, they can build some cars that rival Europe's best. The Stinger looks cool, but I'd be leaning towards the V6, and I really don't like the fuel economy. Ditto the that small Genesis sedan. And pricewise, those get into some heady competition with BMW, Acura, Lexus. The TLX is refined, but so dang heavy. With the Type S AWD, it is about 4200 lbs. Which is 600 lbs more than my Forester XT! IN the meantime, I enjoy the BRZ when I get to the twisty backroads. It begs to be pushed through the curves, but is fun without having to go 40 over the limit. If I had more car, like a C8 Corvette, no doubt doing what is fun in the BRZ would be "yawn" in the Vette and I'd have to be doing "go to jail speeds" frequently to even make the car break a sweat. Beautiful car, but not my jam.

      @@scottanthony3426 the saying is definitely true - It’s more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow! Thanks for all the knowledgeable insight. You’re spot on with the N cars as far as the type of cars they are, and quite honestly, the DCT is so good I’d be hard pressed to go back to a manual. At least until the kids are out of the nest and I can have a weekend car. The BRZ/GR86 is a fantastic platform from what I hear, and according to all the autoX results I see, faster than the N cars around a track. I have always loved the styling of them, and now that they have more power, they have the performance to match it. The only criticism I’ve ever heard about them is if you want to track them you have to use a better quality brake fluid and pads. One thing that I find so impressive about the N cars is they can go straight from the showroom floor to a track and not skip a beat. Again, thanks for comment and enjoy tossing that BRZ around some corners! I can’t wait to get back to the Tail of the Dragon, this time with a car that can actually handle all the turns. 👍🏻

      I find the new Elantra's look great in red....but then, that is what colour mine is, so maybe I'm a little bias lol. I was really happy to see in '21 and '22 Hyundai offered them with a manual transmission in the base model trim in Canada.
      I do want to upgrade to a more performance based car in a couple years. But when you hear about how the dealers treat basic maintenance on the N...it turns you off. With the research I've done for cars in my budget, all roads keep pointing towards the twins.

    New Elantra N w/DCT owner here. I've only had the car for a few days, but overall, I really like it. I'm a little older than the average N owner, so the seats can be a little tricky for me to slip in & out of sometimes, but once I'm in them, they are fairly comfortable. I haven't hit any bad potholes yet, and I haven't heard any rattles, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed on those. I hate rattles! I bought this car because my daily commute increased, and I wanted something fun to drive that still got decent mileage. I traded in my 2016 Charger Scat Pack for the N. My biggest complaint would be the level of road noise when driving. It's fairly loud on certain types of highway surfaces, but the overall fun factor makes it worth it! 😉

      Congrats on your EN! The road noise is louder than my Charger R/T was, but a lot of it has to do with the Michelin PS4S tires. I see you’re likely Canadian, which would explain you getting the correct oil since Canadian dealers seem to have their stuff together much more than the States, but the plastics and materials inside the car are identical. I’d be willing to bet you’ve just never given the handle a good yank. Believe me, it’s not sturdy at all. But anyway, I hope the stalling issue doesn’t continue for you. I like the design, and its a feature worth some extra dollars to make it look and feel more premium. Given that I can do 36mpg on a slow highway cruise (with 93 octane), I think injectors are fine.. I suspect, the binding caused from front axle, when wheel is cranked, is the culprit (I even wonder if it'll act against the engine even in neutral). Also, having clutch engagement point that's not soooo low would help.

    • That crashing over bumps. Can confirm I have 6 spd and I have that issue too. I have PTSD going over slight imperfect road because you never know which one will trigger that pathetic thud. I double click my menu button to make sure my tire pressure is still fine lol.
    • Wish it had radar cruise for something with such good lane keep assist
    • Mine doesn't have sunroof. Wish it had one. Such strange omission just because it's manual.
    • Wish fuel tank was bit bigger.
    • The red trim pieces have started getting bad hits at 10k miles. Not sure what they'd be like in say 5 years. Wish that was better quality
    And regarding dealership- The one I visited for first service had low 4 on google and i wish i checked review before going, but I didn't. The place had some horrific service dept reviews- but great sales dept reviews. They ended up putting 5w20. Fine, I said and waited for 2nd oil change. I feel like, google reviews are accurate and going to one that is 4.6 stars or above shouldn't disappoint you. I made sure to call during my 2nd service apt, and they confirmed 0w30 and I booked over the phone. Luckily service was top notch- they also put the right oil.
    Regarding brand perception- yes but whatever. I think it's a very much US thing for some reason. Overseas in Europe and Australia incl. Asia, Hyundai has great reputation for being technologically ahead of competition and being of great quality on par with Toyota, Honda, while still being relatively cheaper. They manufacture their own steel which is why they can source body materials for very cheap. And most components are also in house made. I personally respect Hyundai a lot for being ahead, bold and different than competition.

Hyundai very well could have made the DRLs turn amber for a turn signal much like the way the Sonata does it. Sorry to hear about the service department, Rowe Hyundai in Westbrook, Maine has been exceptional. All dealerships and service departments are independent (although Hyundai should really clamp down on bad ones), so perhaps a different service department will be better.
    Personally love the seats, but I'm just shy of 5'11", slight build, and a slightly bent spine that can't stand normal lumbar support. Don't mind the cheaper materials. They put the money into the engine, suspension and chassis, so I think it's a fair trade. And with 2 kids 9&12, nicer stuff gets wrecked pretty quick.
    No rattles on mine yet, but I've only hit one really bad pothole. I suspect that may have something to do with pieces getting loose on you. My father-in-law exemplifies the Hyundai prejudice, Easter should be fun.

    @ThePinkfreak2011 Рік тому +1

    Regarding the pothole situation I have a 2022 Toyota Camry XSE V6 and it has the same issue. So yeah the suspension on the car is not made for big potholes in fact the dealer actually told me before I left that if I drove over a decent pothole at more than 30 mph chances r I would bust a tire. It’s been raining a lot where I live and so many of the roads now have huge potholes and I’ve unfortunately have been in the situation a few times where I can’t avoid big potholes and I can’t slow down to 30 unless I want to be rear ended. So yeah I’ve had to drive over them at somewhat not great speeds and the car sounds like I hit another car. Both Hyundai and Toyota seem to have had the same idea in this area. Make the car look aggressive but not drive well under poor weather conditions. But to be fair I haven’t busted a tire yet so I guess they did make it more durable than what it sounds and looks like. Regarding Hyundais history, I think they have come far. I was considering buying the Elantra N before I bought my Camry. It was between it, the Camry, and the Accord Sport. The Camry obviously ended up first but the Elantra N was a close second. The only reason y I didn’t choose one is cuz I liked the two tone color scheme of the Camry better

My wife has a RAV4 Sport 4x4 with the same engine and it’s a quick, fun, reliable little SUV. As far as the suspension goes, I’m really surprised it suffers from the crashing, too. I’d expect that from maybe the TRD since it’s lowered with stiffer springs, but not the XSE. Although, now that you mention it, the wife’s RAV4 crashes over bumps, too. The Sonata N Line I test drive was smooth as butter over them, so they definitely do know how to build one that doesn’t do it.

    Agree that the dealership experience is by far the worst thing about Hyundai. As regional service manager for one of the big 3 I can confidently say they seriously leave a lot of room for improvement. However with a few exceptions most brands dealerships suck!
    One other thing everyone seems super obsessed with oil weight but using the correct Hyundai required API service rating (SN Plus or the newer spec SP) is just as important. It's all about the additive package in today's modern oils and there are some very good reasons why Hyundai engineers spec a SN Plus oil. BTW most currently easy to obtain 0w30 oils don't carry the SN Plus spec but that's slowly changing as manufacturers update their offerings to the current SP spec.
    The seats would also be a slight issue for me but overall they are not bad. At 5'9 170 lbs I am not far off in body size to what they design for but at times have an issue getting comfortable. After having more than a few faux suede and the real thing seats I find the trick is to lift my butt up using my elbows on the door armrest and console a couple of times till I find a comfortable position. Cheap interiors are just a fact of life with these type of vehicles. I am just used to it after having a few STi's and EVO's through the years but love the bang for the buck aspect. After all with the EN's you are paying for the tech and drivetrain and get reminded of that everytime you drive. Only exception would be my Focus RS where it seems they went out of their way to eliminate the cheap feel on most of the touch points however for 10k more they could afford to do it.

    • @n-power-automotive
      @n-power-automotive  Рік тому +1

      Great points all around! The oil thing is so annoying. Like you said, once you find a 0W-30 oil it’s not covering all the ratings. I use Pennzoil Platinum Euro 0W-30. I know it’s a high quality oil, but it doesn’t meet I think one of those specs. I know Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5W-30 does, so I may switch to that next oil change. I just wish it was easier to find a readily available 0W-30 that meets all the ratings to make my life easier and stress less about the damn oil in this thing lol.

    • @richm658
      @richm658 Рік тому +2

      @@n-power-automotive Correct the PP Euro 0w30 does not have the correct API rating. Move up to a 5w30 and you have a lot more choices since it's a much more popular weight and has already been updated by some of the manufacturers to the current SP spec. Not much of a issue unless you live in a super cold climate. Not a huge M1 fan but Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy Full Synthetic 0w30 ticks all the boxes. Pay attention to the Advanced Fuel Economy on the label as the other Mobil 1 0w30's are not what you need. Its sold in lots of places at a reasonable price including Walmart and most have one within driving distance.
      SN Plus was an interim spec to bridge the gap between SN and at the time the yet to be released SP. SN Plus has now been superseded by SP. Offering much better protection for engines like ours. SN Plus and even more so SP was designed to provide increased protection against low-speed pre-ignition (LSPI), timing chain wear protection, improved high temperature deposit protection for pistons and turbochargers, and more stringent sludge and varnish control. All part of the additive package and things our vehicles benefit from. Hence why Hyundai requires it. Also API SP with Resource Conserving matches ILSAC GF-6A by combining API SP performance with improved fuel economy, emission control system protection and protection of engines operating on ethanol-containing fuels up to E85. If I remember correctly the Mobil 1 Advanced Fuel Economy Full Synthetic 0w30 also meets ILSAC GF-6A which is also approved for use in our EN's. Now short term you won't see much issues running a SN oil however for longevity I would always run the proper API rated oil as over time it will come into play.
      All that said if your tuned, tracking or just live in a warmer climate I would also have no problem running a 0w40 or 5w40. This summer I plan on running a 0w40 and see how it goes. Only time will tell but I think given the fact that most modern engines having such tight tolerances I am slightly more comfortable with the thinner cold start weight for a little extra protection. In addition I fall into what's classified in most manuals as severe duty so I plan on adhering to 3k change intervals like I do with any turbo vehicle. Cheap insurance also given the fact that it going to thin out somewhat due to fuel dilution rather quickly from the direct injection. Our GDI engines seem to suffer a bit more from that than usual. Sorry for the long rant.

    As for materials.. you'll see shitty plastics in all cars of this class. It's still better than the gr corolla in my opinion and pretty close to the civic really . Personally I don't mind as it's weight savings as long as the touch points are good.
    As for the suspension, didn't they tune it specifically for u.s roads ? I know here in Australia, Hyundai Australia go out of their way to ensure they do a proper local tune for normal mode. I find in normal mode it's completely fine even on 19s.
    Interesting the reputation isn't that great for Hyundai yet there. In Europe / Asia and Australia the N cars are well regarded , I guess because we've had them since 2017 with the i30n hatch and all their success in tcr and wrc Motorsport , Hyundai has even gone past Honda here now. Another few years and N cars will be huge up there I'd say. Sounds like the N division is still in its infancy up there , hopefully they start n festivals like they do down here to market it better. Great video as usual. I'll chime in with my complaints.
    1. No wireless Android Auto. Why put the wireless charging pad if I still need to plug in my phone?
    2. No easy way (that I've found) to go from the N screen back to Android Auto. You can get to the N screen in one click of the star button but not back to Android Auto.
    3. No adaptive cruise control. I heard rumors that the '24 will have and I'll be so jealous if that's the case.
    4. No way to go straight to Eco mode without going into Sport first. I don't like having to select Sport mode and then the exhaust changes and then goes back to quite when I get to Eco. it's probably not a big deal but I just worry that its putting unnecessary wear on the electric motor or whatever makes the exhaust louder.
    5. The wheel spin and wheel hop. My god, sometimes I'll spin the wheels all the way through 2nd gear lol

    • @n-power-automotive
      @n-power-automotive  Рік тому +1

      Thanks! And great point on all the things you listed.
      1. I totally agree on the lack of wireless, but them including a wireless charging pad (which I never use) doesn’t make much sense.
      2. I believe you can program your star button to Phone Projection which would be Android Auto if you have your phone plugged in. You should give it a shot.
      3. I wasn’t a fan of adaptive cruise on my Accord, but I did try it in the Sonata N Line I test drove and it worked great, so it is a shame we didn’t get it.
      4. You know, I think about the drive mode thing every time I use it, but I just didn’t think of it for this video! I 100% agree it’s super annoying to have to cycle through Sport to get to ECO. I’ve started taking my foot off the gas pedal when cycling though the modes to try and reduce the load on the exhaust valve. Not sure it’ll make it last longer or not but we’ll see. But yeah, its super weird to have to hear the exhaust valve open for a split second in Sport just to go into ECO.
      5. You really need to get a lower rear engine mount or bushings to reduce the wheel hop. I have heard it’s way worse in the 6 speed manuals. Also, I think the Michelin PS4S tires wheel hop more than all seasons due to their better grip, but I’d personally rather have pure spin than hop. Just a thought.
      All in all though, at the end of the day, we still have an amazing car, just with some small quirks and annoyances.

And to get to the Android Auto screen, all you have to do is press the 'Media" button on the dash, and it will open right to it, so long as it was the most recent used media source. However, I also have the media button setup to only switch to Android Auto and Bluetooth, as I never use the radio and don't want to accidentally switch to it when I don't use it in the first place. You'll most likely just have to browse through the settings and try some experiments to see what works, but pressing the media button will take you directly to the Android Auto screen.
