    It’s not mentioned in this video but I really like that the show pays homage to the great female bassist from the 50’s and 60’s Carol Kaye. The bassist in Shy Baldwins’ band is a woman named Carol, she wears the same style of glasses that Kaye wore and she even bears a resemblance to Kaye. It’s subtle but as a bassist myself I immediately recognized the reference. Just another example of how the producers of this show went all out to achieve that authenticity.

      I picked up on that right away, but I also caught something more subtle. They show her playing left handed at first and then later, right handed. I wonder if the change has some significance or if it was just a gaffe

      michael locicero I thought that ‘Carol’ might have been a reference to Carol Kaye, but I didn’t think the period was correct. PS - I’ve seen a couple of photos of the young Carol, and I think she’s a stunner (Edit: she did play in a touring band in the late 50's, still playing 6-string, though in 1960 she would have been 25)

    I have far more empathy for Shy Baldwin who is actually Johnny Mathis than I do for Lenny Bruce who caused his own demise. Johnny dealt with racism and not being allowed to stay in the hotels he performed in and having to hide that he was gay none of which he could control. The way Midge keeps Shy's secret and the friendship they form is a lovely relationship but it's sad the way it ended.

    • @carlosa.sanchez896
      @carlosa.sanchez896 4 роки тому +59

      True but Shy finished it off like the toxic queen he is. It's not enough he routinely disrespects and mistreats his band, something no pro singer would be dumb enough to do. Then he dumps on poor Midge, who not only kept his secret but also patched him up the night he got his ass whooped, so he could make it to the stage and perform. So, how does he repay her kindness? By tossing her from the tour for doing the type of routine his own manager told her to do. You call that a lovely relationship? Maybe you haven't seen S3-E8 yet. I get Shy's pain and anger at having to live in the closet and by Jim Crow laws, but he shouldn't take it out on those who have his back and make his success possible.

    • @themelexperience7628

      I feel ya'll but Midge did out him at the mf APOLLO. If ya'll are in the AA community, ya'll should no that's a big no no even more so than outting someone in general. She made references questioning his masculinity and calling him "pretty" and "girly" while her intentions were good her actions were dangerous. She knew Shy's temperment as well as his secret and as usual she did not take account that her actions had consequences. I felt for Midge, but I would've kicked her butt to the curb as well.

      @@themelexperience7628 I hear what you're saying. I grew up in a household with Johnny Mathis songs and I remember my Mother saying that Johnny Mathis being gay is the worst kept secret in show business and she thought it was ironic that women were falling all over him. My Mom was as white as Midge and it was also the '60s but she loved Johnny for his talent and didn't care what color he was or that he was gay but Johnny kept his secret as best he could for a reason.Johnny is still on tour today but I wonder what would have happened if a white comic who knew him personally had done that to him.Maybe things would have gone much differently. Thanks for a different point of view.

    • @themelexperience7628
      @themelexperience7628 4 роки тому +15

      Debra Duerksen no problem! It’s kinda like Little Richard. Yes we knew but it was still a respectful thing to let him be. In the Apollo they had drag queens and queer icons on slow nights, however not everyone is as welcoming and it was dangerous to black and gay like it is today. I was disappointed with midge for not realizing this when she patched Shy up.
      Also notice Shy and Reggies attitudes when they are within their own community vs clubs like Cococabana., Shy was eating different foods that he ain’t like, his songs were way more soulful, like come on Midge.

    It should be pointed out that the “Borscht belt” resorts were built because the existing resorts in upstate NY (and in New England and elsewhere) were “restricted”: they didn’t admit Jews (or African Americans). So the Jews built their own clubs, resorts, and children’s camps (another type of facility that was restricted in the past).... BTW Phyllis Diller was not Jewish, contrary to popular belief. A Jewish female comedian from the early 60s that many people forget was Totie Fields. Many considered Fields to be among the best there was. She died relatively young, though, so isn’t as well known as she should be.

      Totie Fields was from the next town over to me in Natick Ma. At her height she was a far better known personality than Jeanne Carroll, her life cut short by a gruesome and extended illness.. Despite this she was voted Entertainer of the Year in 1978 by the perfomers
      guild the year of her death.

      I think the producers of the show are taking some real liberties with history, implying a flirtation/possible relationship between Lenny & Midge. Considering that in 1960 he was DEEP into alcohol and drug addictions.... Hardly a stable, attractive personality for a young divorcée to date.

      I can understand the sentiment, but keep in mind that the tendency to label it as "Russian", at least in the United States, may be partly due to the fact that the "Russian" ancestors of many American Jews (who were in fact mostly from what is now Ukraine, Belarus, Lithuania and Latvia) left the region before the existence of an independent Ukrainian state. My borscht-eating "Russian" Jewish ancestors were from the area that is now Ukraine, but they always called themselves Russian.

    I was so excited about this premise; a 50's Jewish houswife gets divorced and tries to make it a a stand-up comic. Meets Lenny Bruce, gets arrested. This could have been epic. Instead, this series has been all about style over substance, the characters become caricatures, the dialogue progressively devolves into silly, rushed and shallow dialogue that is (by design?) reminiscent of some of the inspid writing of 50's/60's TV shows and musicals. I hoped for too much from this. I'd love to see another writer/director take the same premise and make an important film/series.

Lenny Bruce is in the story and was Jewish but brilliantly political and sensitive on all subjects, not merely capitalizing on Jewishness. See Bob Fosse's Lenny instead of this lame fictional fluff piece, even Eddie Murphy's My Name Is Dolemite rings more true.

      One problem - Dustin Hoffman's performance can't begin to compare to Luke Kirby. The fact that Hoffman looked nothing like Bruce didn't help. Watch the actual Bruce's concert movie and you will see what I mean.

    Too much drama this season. Will drop next season if trend to drama continues...and I think it will.

      Yes, I did think season three drug on a bit in the middle. Season four needs to resume the upbeat pace of the previous seasons.

    I don't understand the Jewish fascination to claim an entire identity around borscht. It's a Slavic dish that would have existed with or without them.

    _"Exploring our past for inspiration and empowerment"_
    Did anyone else feel a bit pukey at that sentence? The world's drunk on "pride" and "empowerment" right now. It's almost become meaningless.

      blackmore4 no, i think people as disenfranchised as the jewish people deserve a bit of empowerment- which is not, as you put it, simply “pride”. it means something else in this context

    Not to minimize the Jewish aspect, but it tells about the transition from the fifties to the sixties, and it attendant cultural shift...
