I still can't believe that this content is available for free on UA-cam. Thank you to everyone working on this channel!
thanks for tuning in Ismael! We're lucky to have some amazing guests like David joining us.
preach!
This is great ive been rewatching the show from the beginning its one of my favourite shows
Literally said the same thing!!!!!
Glad someone finally broke this down for the masses. This show does NOT get the credit it deserves on a cinematic level. Especially when it comes to staging. Howard hawks would be balking at some of these lighting setups. Truly masterful, and BOLD, too. God damn.
I mean, maybe not from audiences, but it certainly gets plenty of recognition for its cinematography at the critical level.

This is one of the few shows where the visuals actually had me standing up and yelling at the screen because of how good it was. Hope everyone enjoys this as much as I did just getting the chance to just sit and listen to him.
Yup. It's incredible. From cinematography to costume, to acting talent to script dialogue, even music, recreation of vintage scenes, incl. authentic Vintage cars. The colors they replicated are off the charts of meticulous accuracy.
I enjoy watching how they did it as much as the show itself.
Yep, I've rewound bits just to process them properly. It's mind blowing! I get to the end of a tracking bit and realise I've held my breath the whole time.
I have been watching TV for 60 years... Mrs. Maisel is the only show I have ever seen that the only way I can describe it is..... BEAUTIFUL.... The locations are BEAUTIFUL, The costumes are BEAUTIFUL, the camera movement and lighting are BEAUTIFUL, and the serious use of wide locations with many other extras in the background are BEAUTIFUL!!!!! In this third season, I cannot express how I am awed in every scene by the scope and the color... As a TV watcher, I almost feel like I have been blind, and with Mrs. Maisel, I can see COLOR for the first time!!!!! Did I say I LOVE THIS SHOW???
I worked as a production assistant on season three and it was absolutely mind-blowing being able to see how the entire crew worked together and the million moving parts that make the incredible show. Watching David work made me want to pursue cinematography!
Oh wow! I can only imagine the amount of tips & details you learned from true pros. Congrats
Wow that's so cool!
What about the amazing audio work on the show? It's highly under rated!
Mathew Price Highly under rated is right! I’m sure it’s any day till your interview is next
Mathew Price I was about to take a screenshot of your comment and text it to the sound mixer but then I saw your name ;)
Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is probably one of the few shows these days that are both shot and acted magnificently! The Handmaid's Tale and Dark are some other gems in terms of cinematography.. would love to see a video or listen to a podcast with their DOP
Let them know that you'd love to see them on the show! Would be amazing to do a breakdown of The Handmaid's Tale.
I feel that way also about Peaky Blinders. The Sound & Cinematography are incredible!
the dialogues! so clever! so pleasing!
Mr robots cinematography in the recent season especially is amazing
I just started watching Outlander and I'd say that too!
The cinematography in MMM is incredible. Seriously. I could go back and watch both seasons again on mute and just enjoy the visuals. The pastel color palette, the perfectly balanced lighting...it's fantastic.
A master at work. He also has an adequate budget. Alexa Mini is a great camera. Used it on my short "Amy's Baby". I was blown away by the beautiful image.
Such an incredible show. It's honestly mind-blowing how beautiful each and every episode is.
Genius. It is a brilliant show and seeing the wizard behind the curtain reveal his tricks is awesome. Thanks for sharing this.
One of my most favorite shots is the one of Midge and Benjamin leaving the Catskills in his big red convertible. The camera comes up behind the car, moves over the top and looks down on them (as they are also moving) and then comes down in front of them. Absolutely outstanding!
Would also recommend the scene where her parents are looking around an empty apartment in Paris - Season 2 Episode 2. Really wonderful one-shot with the added hazard of mirrors on every wall!
I was specifically looking at the mirrors on the wall and wondering how the hell they were pulling that off. Same for the dancers at the wedding, mirrors on the wall there too.
I have a whole new appreciation for this show. I already loved everything from the costuming, to the music, to the acting and story, but this is something else. The amount of detail and creative thinking it requires to pull off some of these shots that may only last for a few seconds, and usually go unnoticed by the general audience, is amazing! I want to rewatch the entire show now and just focus on the shot composition, because it's so rich!
The production design, art direction, and cinematography on this show are out of this world.
There is an amazing transition in season 2 that had me flabbergasted. They are using the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State building symbolizing the movement between paris and nyc, in such a creative way that I’ve never seen before.
that shot was unbelievable.
As an aspiring cinematographer , I can't begin to explain to you how helpful these videos are to me and how I never would like this series to stop. I'd be great if we have more and more even longer and in depth videos.
Your videos are so beautiful to look at, to the point and edited articulately, totally up to date. Thanks for making UA-cam the platform it deserves to be.
more to see from you x
so glad to hear these videos have been helpful. We have a lot of fun making them and it's an honor to hang out with such talented guests!
I stumbled on Mrs. Maisel quite by accident, and the first thing that struck me was the cinematography. That drew me in, and then the amazing writing and performances kept me coming back. It's one of my favorites for sure.
I fell in love with this show within five minutes. It is by far some of the best work out there. And to see the choreography of the cameras is most excellent.
So awesome that Maisel, a comedy, beat shows like Game of Thrones for the cinematography Emmy!!
David is a genius. One of the best cinematographers of all time.
This show is amazing, watch it if you haven't. It's incredibly well written and just well made overall. Extremely charming lead, great cinematography, and Tony Shaloub is a national treasure.
Had the honour of spending some time with David a couple of weeks ago. And I can say that he is one of the most knowledgeable men I've ever met.
This is already one of my favorite shows anyhow, but to learn more about the technical precision it has, really elevates my appreciation for it even more
What happens when Amazon gives Amy Sherman-Palladino a blank check
This show was the first time I've ever been really interested in cinematography because of how beautifully they do it. I was just amazed
These blow my fricken mind; I’ve loved ALL of these, but for this, have never seen the show. But this one.. incredible. Please keep doing these!
They do the same sort of long shots in Gilmore Girls - same writer on that show - so underrated.
Fascinating to get all the BTS details!
This guy is an absolute master! Thank you for bringing him in and picking his brain. So informative.
The USO scene in Episode 1 Season 3 is a master class in film making!
I've watched that scene, literally, dozens of times.
This also will be missed when the show finishes. I loved the use of color throughout this series. It all came together like a wonderful portrait! Just beautiful. ❤❤❤❤
The Handmaids Tale is also a Classic in Art Direction and Cinematography ... In the last season ... The Use of RED and Camera placements were breath taking. Some of the Frames were ... like a contemporary painting. Absolutely stunning. Please break that down too.
This is fascinating. I love the look and feel of the show, but had no knowledge or understanding of why and all the talent, thought, and effort that goes into it. They do such an amazing job that it's seamless, always adds and never detracts from the show.
I got to meet David for a brief moment yesterday in Seattle for an event where he broke down this scene and a couple others. It was a great learning experience. Bravo for this work.
Absolutely love this show! Some of the best cinematography i've seen in a TV series. David seems like a cool guy and he's a really big inspiration to me!
The Maisel Cinematography just keeps blowing my mind. I am going crazy over here but this video keeps me sane
Yes, yes, yes! Thank you for inviting David Mullen! I loved it when he broke down The Love Witch on the forums, and watching this made me giddy with delight!
At first I just watched this show because my wife started watching it and then I kept noticing how elaborate the camera work is on this show and really started to enjoy every single episode more and more. Grade A creatives are obviously in control, I can't wait for more of this. Season 3 was incredible just the camera work alone should be award winning.
It’s so impeccable the whole thing ♥️ The best series ever made! Truly
I'm sorry but this is RIDICULOUS! Pure magic. This show always gives me a sense of wonder and it's easy to see why. I hope you get him back for another one!!
my favorite show and as a UA-camr who barely understands the need for perfect light this video blows my mind. I have loved the camera work on MM and have been fascinated with the cinematic feel and seamless transitions. now I have a excuse to watch all 3 seasons again !
thanks for this little break down, for someone also working in the industry very interesting :) imho miss maisel is one of the best written, best acted & best shot series I've seen in a long time. everything just works so perfect together, the sets, the costumes, the lightning, camera movements, dialogues!!
Such an awesome episode! Thank you for these top notch behind the scenes breakdowns. 😍
David is so amazingly talented and soo down to earth!! Loved hearing him talk about his life's passions and you can definitely hear the years and years of experience and love he puts into his job. Super inspiring
OMG! I have been in awe of the camera work in Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. To get this insight into the amount of work that went into each shot--man, just awesome! Thanks to both of you for this video.
This was a fantastic interview and breakdown. This show has such beautiful cinematography. Thank you for sharing the process.
RIP Matthew Perry

The amount of talent and teamwork shots like that require is amazing

The camera work, the lighting and using certain filters that can best interprets the writer's and director's vision.. I have to say is GENIUS and BEAUTIFUL!!!! Thanks for sharing this.

Amazing session, Thank You!
Love this, thanks IndyMogul! That street shot and lighting setup is EPIC.
One of my favorite shows ever. I love the cinematography
This is fascinating! Love the show and the incredible creativity behind every second of it. Looking forward to Season 3.
Facinating on the full complexity of each shot.
One of the best production videos ever! Totally mesmerizing.
David!! So glad you got him on the show, he's my favorite online cinematography mentor.
love these long shots, and this video answered all the questions I had regarding how they pulled them off. Bravo!
Fantastic! I have been captivated by the lighting and camera work in this series. Great to be able to get behind the scenes!
Incredible what all goes into just the lighting. Wow. Beyond my understanding but amazing to hear him explain it all.
This was great. Thanks for doing the interview.
Marvelous Mrs Maisel is for sure the most beautiful camera work ever done. It feels like you are genuinely there
It's a beautiful show. Thank you for showing us some of the magic behind it.
Amazing show! AMAZING cinematography!
He was right about the short at the start of S3. I was like "What?!"
I love the marvelous mrs maisel and one of the things that a love most about it is cinematography and to have this inside look on it is phenomenal, can you have again pleaseeeee there are so many amazing scenes!!

AMAZING lighting & camera work! What fun to have these abilities to make scenes GREAT :)
SO Happy to Marvelous Mrs. Maisel being represented! Thanks for getting David on here!
I am amazed by the cinematography in every episode.
So much thought and attention went into this show and you can see it. It is such a beautiful show. I relish at the beauty of each scene when I watch it. I don't know anything about camera work and such but the show is just so beautifully shot. It's amazing. Glad this popped up in my suggestions.
What's really amazing is that I feel that Gilmore Girls tried to have this specific aesthetic of cinematography but Amy didn't have the budget to, but now we have this which is, well, marvelous!! AND THIS IS A TV SHOW!!!
this was so cool and interesting, i love the show and can't wait to see more of the amazing cinematography
I love this series. Thank you Indy Mogul!
This is amazing. I want this for every episode. I had no idea about some of this stuff.
Amazing content. So educational. Keep up the amazing work.
So good. I listened to David Mullen in the asc podcasts and it was great to learn. I came here looking for images of what I listened there and found this awesome video. He explains himself so well too!
Amazing. My respect to all involved with this show. Visually intoxicating and my inspiration.
Many thumbs up. Quiet confidence.
Thank you so much for bringing David Mullen, the wonderful cinematographer and teacher! This breakdown is a mind-blowing black magic :)
i just found this incredible video, i am absolutely in awe of m david mullen - i just started watching united states of tara which he did as well! amazing work
I love following David on IG. Super talented, creative, technical and all around nice guy!!
This guy is a fucking genius. There's a scene in the new season, at a theatre, where the dancers are in like a doll's house. The camera pans from the seats, through a doll's house room and up the floors. It's absolutely mind blowing how they did that.
Holy crap! David Mullen is a flippin' cinematic genius! Some of those camera shots and lighting schemes were so great they're otherworldly! I stand in awe! 👏 👍
AMAZING!!! SPECTACULAR cinematography! BRAVO xoxo
Binged third season yesterday. It’s great.
A perfect example of how the most hard-working and talented people are the humblest
David Mullen, our guardian angel behind all those marvelous forum posts for those in the know, great to see him here!
Fantastic. David Mullen is one of the most helpful cinematographers out there. Thanks!
This is it! This long takes is one of my favorite things about the show. Thanks to UA-cam recommendation algorithm, and to the creator of this content.

A brilliant artist speaking w/ a knowledgable interviewer. WOW
I've been following David Mullen for a couple of years from some comments on the Deakins site and found some of his stills work on facebook. He's gifted, with a great eye for composition. This video shows how remarkably skilled he is.
The first thing that impressed me watching this series was the beautiful photography. Thanks for the info!
