Ain't it funny how those onions keep growing after harvest!!? Very nice harvest there, my friend! You've about got me leaning toward overwintering some again for those huge bulbs. It's been about 5 or 6 years since I last got bit by the deep freeze and lost a crop, and the pain has subsided somewhat! I can get decent sized bulbs with plants in January, but not as big as overwintering. I see those blackberries blooming away too!!
A little Agribon can solve that fear of losing onions to the cold. Once you start overwintering again, you'll be glad you did.
@@LazyDogFarm Had them covered the last time I lost them. 8 degrees laughed at that Agribon. It got up to a balmy 19 the next day, then back to about 12 that night. Toast! Our 16 acre lake froze over that year! I think it was a little longer ago than I originally said.

The red onion stem was really thick. All those greens will make a nice addition to the compost bin.
It is. Probably means it won't store very well, but that's okay. It's getting pickled anyways.

Best curing on a pallet, air gets to circulate better or by hanging after a few days in the sun.
They'll get good circulation once on our rack under the barn, but I unfortunately don't have anything like that sitting in the sun. I agree that would be even better than sitting them on the ground.

Nice onions. 8a in central Texas at my place, we lost some with those teen digits this winter. Didn’t protect them in time. Know what to do next year. Got some looking good. The only ones bolting on me are my bunching onions.
Yeah our bunching onions are all bolting, but that's what they do when it gets warm. Some folks leave them in the same spot year after year and just let them continue to volunteer.
Celery taste test required looking good though...

We'll probably do a taste test on the celery in a few weeks. Probably gonna have to have some wings to go with it though.
What do these onions taste like? You need to evaluate flavor, texture and how well they store. Just curious what your views on this are. Nice job on growing.
In my opinion, onion taste is more a function of growing conditions than variety. Now some red onion varieties are spicier than others, but most of these sweet onions taste the same. I can't tell a difference, so that's why we mainly use size as the differentiating factor in performance. The more water your onions are giving in the bulbing process, the sweeter they'll be. The less water and more sulfur they're given, the more of that onion "bite" they'll have.
That's some great looking onions, wish you would have weight that onion.. ✌

Thanks, I had no idea about blanching the celery. I've been harvesting all wrong.
Some folks will say it isn't necessary. I might remove the soil from a few of mine so we can compare the taste.

When I heard the words Onions as big as a basketball I went into, as my only description, a Wide Awake Coma with a waking Dream, where I'm walking through the Land of Milk and Honey where Golden Paths were lined with golden-yellow Onions the size of my head as far as I could see that was shaded by willow tree like towering Okry Plants where the Okry was hanging down like grapes there for you to pick. If I had not shaken myself out of it I could have been lost forever. We can dream can't we.

When the onions bolt can you let them go to seed then save the seeds to plant next year ?

Did you plant those onions in the fall last year?
Yes. We start seeds in the greenhouse in late September and transplant them in the ground in early November.

I'm in my 3rd yr. of trying onions from seed and they are getting bigger every year but they are still nothing like yours. I guess I need to feed them more than I have been.
Although I'm sure it can be done, it's really hard to feed them too much.
I have a question, my granddad used to pull the green part of the onion together and fold them down and tied them over, why ?
Not sure. Maybe it was a way to break any connection between the green tops and the bulb, so as to improve the curing process? That would be my best guess.

Did you feel the alfalpha pellets were an asset to your onions?
They definitely didn't hurt anything. We used a variety of nutrient sources on that plot and I'm sure they all contributed somewhat to the final result.

I’m trying to figure out what I did wrong. I am in Louisiana. I ordered onion bulbs from Dixon dale. Definitely not blaming them because I have never grown them. But they are not bulbing at all.
Did you order short-day onion varieties? If not, that's likely the problem.

Great video!!! Thank you!! However, I hope you can answer my question asap please and thank you!!!! I have a community garden where I live and paid for a couple of plots this year. Unfortunately, it is not fenced and between the rabbits, deer and people I am loosing lots of my bounty. People are stealing my onions and I think if I don't harvest them asap I won't have any to harvest. My onion however have NOT even started to brown much less break at the neck or show any signs they are done. I am torn as what to do. If I harvest them now, even with proper curing are they likely to store long term? Do you know? Any advice is appreciated!

Feed them greens to the chickens.
We gave them some and a whole bunch of spinach that had bolted. They were very happy!
My grandfather used to knock over his onions. He said it makes them get larger bulbs.

The smallest quantity they have is 1,000 seeds, but not a bad price for that many seeds. Grow onion plants for the whole neighborhood!

Might be, but w'eve had a good stretch of curing weather and I need to get a cover crop planted in that plot for the chickens.
@@LazyDogFarm Yeah- totally understand! One of the problems with onions is that if you wait until they are all ripe, then you have to figure out what to do with 300LBS of onions!!!!! So, I guess if one picks a few of them early . . . . . then you can stretch out the harvest.

Oh my goodness I can only imagine growing an onion that big. I know mine are punny compared to yours but I will enjoy what I get.
My son would be so jealous of the rutabaga, I don't think he's ever grown one as big as that monster on top.
That Nature Safe 8-5-5 is good stuff for rutabagas. We put it in the furrow at planting and that's all they received as far as fertilizer goes.

You can get frost on the plants in 35 degrees and below. Ours saw a few 40 degree nights within a couple weeks of planting and were just fine though.
Them are Great size onions! I hope i get some large onions too, but so far i haven't reached that size. Maybe the weather will plane off and give us a good grow season!

Onion taste test?
These all taste pretty much the same. I've found onion taste has more to do with growing conditions than variety.
Nice onions! LOL My intermediate day onions have just now began heavy foliage growth. The bulbs will begin swelling mid-May, and harvest in June.

It's time, it's onion pullin' time! My Texas turned out just like yours. I'm quite pleased because I got just over 20 from a growbox. The White Creole are smaller but also look good. My reds, like yours, are still growing.
Good job on the celery! I think you'll have an outstanding result. The stalks will keep growing taller so you may need to hill a bit more. Next time you'll have to try the trench method. Just like the onions celery needs water during these last days.
I see how the trench could be very valuable at this stage. Didn't quite grasp the concept at first, but it all makes sense now.

Nice looking harvest and harvest to come, I grew the Texas legend ( only in a raised bed) but only had a few that did good the rest were small or spilt which cannot figure out why. Maybe next season will give it a try again but with one of those variety’s.
I swear it seems like I've grown some really nice Legends in past years, but they just didn't cut the mustard this year.
I grew some celery in a raised bed a few years ago and it's still thriving. I never thought to blanch it. LOL. We mostly use it for pot herbs because it is a little bitter for fresh eating. Blessings from Linda, 8a, middle Georgia.
I'm thinking I need to uncover a few of mine so I can compare the taste of blanched vs. unblanched.

Crazy how onion growing is so much different between here and there. You'll be pulling onions when we're starting seeds for our next crop.
To be honest....I used to like and grow big Onions, but there always seems to be some of it leftover... nowadays, I prefer smaller onions (medium), and use two, if needed, and not have to wrap and save leftovers in fridge. They're also easier to slice.
I agree that the medium-sized onions are much more feasible in the kitchen. The huge ones can be difficult to cut, but they sure are fun to grow!

What is the down side to leaving them in as long as they are alive still?
No downside really if your conditions are dry. But I've had them start to rot if I leave them in the ground too long and get lots of heavy rain.
Those onions look great! First year growing bulbing onions for me and they are just starting to bulb up. Coastal SoCal. My biggest challenge is the crows digging the soil and knocking over the onions (and garlic). This is the first time I've had such a challenge with the crows and I had no idea what diggers they are. A neighbor that also has a garden says he's doing battle with them too.
Might be time to put a scarecrow out there. lol

For the Agrithrive products, what is the difference between the general purpose vs the fruit and flower?
The fruit and flower has more potassium while the general purpose has more nitrogen -- so just a slightly different analysis. We've been using the fruit and flower on our fig trees and on flowering plants like cukes, squash, tomatoes, peppers, pumpkins, etc.

The carrots and onions are going to be my work in progress since they take more of my dedication during fall fertilizer schedule is hardest for me to maintain. I did get some pumpkin seed, just generic for now. I also ordered those garden tags and reorder on my Agrothrive. Great project for Agrothrive! I've got a big list of outside projects for this weekend since we have had a decent stretch of sunny dry weather. Thanks again for the link for those garden tags. Oh next year when/ you start pruning your fig trees do you plan to show that in a video? As of right now I've only obtained 2 varieties of the fig trees. (Brown turkey and geaux tigers LSU) Those are some huge onions. I wouldn't have any flack from any of my garden antics if I could show my husband I grew an onion the size you have!
If you've got plenty of room for your fig tree to grow, I don't really think there's any reason to prune it. The only reason I ever prune mine is to either take cuttings for propagation or to keep limbs from hitting me in the face while cutting grass.
@@LazyDogFarm yeah I think I want to get just 1 more fig tree. I'm eyeing the Celeste. Or whatever I don't have in the fig flavor profile wheel. I gotta see what trees I have that belong in which profile. I will want to prune for propagation though. I have a push weed eater to get between my trees if I can't get thru with l lawn mower. I thought that fig trees needed partial shade though.
