  • Calm out of Chaos at Carlisle Station!
    Cancellations and serious delays on Avanti due to disruption in the south.
    WCML Freight carries on!
    23 & 24 October 22
    As work continues to sort out the derailment at Petteril Bridge Junction, all is quiet without traffic to Newcastle and Appleby.
    Then, as the day wears on, its obvious that the closure of the WCML Trent Valley route for scheduled engineering works is causing delays as trains are diverted via Birmingham. Additional delays follow flooding south of Rugby.
    Avanti are terminating many Anglo Scottish services at Preston with those allowed through running up to 114 minutes - nearly two hours - late!
    On the freight side, the Rail Head Treatment Train is rescheduled to head down the main line to Carnforeth after its initial run to Whitehaven. The regular intermodals and Departmental trains are running on the West Coast.

    Hi Les Another great video, the cement train derailment looks worse than I originally thought, with at least one of the tankers having turned upside down and going over the bridge parapet, I saw a short video earlier from NR saying it will be weeks/months rather than days before its all sorted out. I guess the WCML will be very busy for a while yet then. Also 4S57 empty, no containers at all! Thanks again

      Thanks Peter. Yes it's going to be a while. No idea where the cement to Mossend is being routed at the moment. Today the cement on site was being pumped into road tankers. Two wagons went off the tracks, one upside down and the other sort of upright with side of the river.

    I see the greenery between platforms is still doing well. Enjoyed the video. All the best Mick.

    I haven't seen 66711 for ages. Used to be a regular down here. Nice load of empties too behind him. Nice one Leslie.

      Always seem to be empty! Well we'll be seeing a lot of 711 I expect as GBRf don't change the allocated locos often. Thanks Tim.

    Cheers Les, as I understand it the derailment was caused by a faulty Wheelset. It’s going to cost the Cement firm some money if that’s the case. The Bridge Parapet needs rebuilding as well. Thanks.

      Oh it's going to cost. The wagons are owned by a leasing company so no doubt it will take the accountants a while to sort it out.

    Interesting day Les, I was hoping that some of the freight would come down the coast line to take at least a little pressure off the WCML as far as Carnforth and even run the Leeds passenger down to Carnforth via the coast and then the across to Settle.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  Рік тому

      It would be interesting to see a little more freight around the coast, at least.

    I always think Carlisle could do with a facelift with undulating track littered with weeds. It's hard to believe it's a vital connection on the west coast main line looking like it does.

      I suspect that Network Rail are waiting for a major rebuild project to come up that will mean altering the south junction trackwork. Thanks for watching

    Les it looks like they have used a "slewing " system to jack the wagon sideways. You can just see it in the video.

    Hi, Leslie!
    Great video. I love those red Roya Mail trains. Do they run when the mail is on strike, or do they strike, too? How long is it taking to clear the derailment? What lines/directions has it blocked off, or was it a siding? Watching today, really made me miss traveling (UK or Germany), but that is coming again, soon! Cheers!

      Hey Anthony. The clean up of the junction will take another two weeks I guess. They're emptying the cement into road tankers today but that won't be a quick job. There's a heavy crane to be built which will take 3 days to erect. Then there's the trackwork to be built off site, delivered and installed. Oh and the structure of the bridge to sort out! It's a junction on two secondary lines, both see freight and passenger. One of the lines is the Settle & Carlisle line, the other to Newcastle.

    I wonder why they couldn't run the Leeds trains via Carnforth? Maybe there were pathing difficulties on the WCML, especially with freights being diverted over Shap now.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  Рік тому

      Thanks Mike. The Settle & Carlisle service is the main thing, the passenger trains are quite busy into Carlisle. Plus Northern don't have drivers with route knowledge over the WCML. S&C services are running south of and to Appleby.

    • @AndreiTupolev
      @AndreiTupolev Рік тому

      That would be a very complicated manoeuvre, they'd have to cross over from the up main into the goods loop at Carnforth and then reverse back into the station, and not rejoining the usual route until Hellifield it would still miss out all the stations on the S&C

    Such a contast between UK and US derailment scenes! The US guys would have a couple of CAT dozers re-rail anything remotely useable and clear off any damaged wagons and locos within about 12 hours. Lash in a bypass track across the scene and up and running within 24 to 36 hours. Is this the right way to do it? Probably not! Accidents and derailments seem to be a daily occurance in the US at the moment, so maybe the UK/European approach it the right way, but it seems this cement wagon derailment will cause major inconvenience for quite some time to come

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  Рік тому +1

      Thanks David. Others have suggested similar action but it seems that's not how to do it. There are a number of wagons still on site but apparently undamaged. Seven of the 14 have already been removed now. The state of the junction points and concerns about the bridge structure underneath are, I suspect, are the limiting factors.

    Watching this just proves HS2 is a waste of money and time.
    I guess it was done to prevent the construction industry from going on the dole.
    Mono rail will supersede the railway as we know it in a few decades of time.

      Yep, no point in investing in infrastructure with so much cheap land going begging inside the M25 and home counties - might as well build a wall to keep us out and save the cost of developing anywhere else. High speed rail is just a dead end, look at how countries such as China and most of Europe haven't bothered building any, they just stay in one place and wait for the local horse and cart to rock up...
      You maybe correct on your assertion that a Maglev/monorail will be the future, so lets just do nothing for 40 or 50 years, until the technology makes it possible to build one more cheaply - they might even have banned politics by then, so that it gets done without anyone giving their mates a financial backhander, but the burning question is whether the inaugural run will occur, or will the RMT still be on strike?
