  • Weather CHAOS & Loco Variety at Carlisle.
    Class 56!
    Class 37s!
    Floods cause cancellations
    10 January 2023
    It was a wet dark day with a fair bit of wind too in Carlisle.
    The day was really in two halves -
    In the morning there was a good amount of loco action with ROG 37s passing through and a Class 56 working aggregates from Ravenstruther, near Carstairs, to Longport. Class 70s were also around on three different services.
    Freightliner blessed us with a pair of 90s in tangerine livery as well as a 66 on the regualr Tyne Yard departmental run.
    GBRf is still using 66 Cambridge PSB on the Hams HAll containers
    DB Cargo showed its presence on their regular Departmental train to Basford Hall and on the fairly frequent containers from Seaforth Dock.
    The ever present DRS entertained us with 66s and 88s on the tesco trains and light engine. A convoy of four 68s went to Sellafield but unfortunately went down Platform 1 as I was walking up Platform 3 to get a closer look at the 90s!
    In the afternoon the levels of rain had brought speed restrictions over Beattock, between Carstairs and Lockerbie. Network Rail are right to be cautious after the recent embankment slip. Then not one but both lines south - the WCML and then the Settle & Carlisle were blocked by flooding. The WCML recovered within an hour but by then Avanti had split their timetable, as usual to keep services south of there near to schedule with reduced services north. Not sure what Trans Pennine were up to, other than terminating services at Carlisle.
    Overall a very Interesting day!

    Cracking stuff Les. I was 14 yrs. old when the EE. type 3's came into service and took over some of the fish trains after I had started work on Grimsby fish market in late 1962. Amazing to find they are still at work when I am well into my 70's.!

      Wow ! Yes they are still going strong and seen as essential parts of the smaller company fleets. Glad you enjoyed!

    Why are loco wipers always a bit rubbish, even on the newer machines? They stutter back and forward as if they had just been taken off a 1930s Morris.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  Рік тому +1

      ITs certainly the case on the old locos but the modern EMUs seem to be quite efficient if noisy

    • @hoffwell
      @hoffwell Рік тому

      @@LeslieGilpinRailways Indeed, the wipers on the EMUs perform much more like a modern car.

    • @MrGrunter0
      @MrGrunter0 Рік тому +1

      We have some 66?'s that either go extremely slow or so fast they look as though they will fly off! Never a happy medium 🤣.
      And the noise some make can even be heard over the engine in notch 8!
      All air operated which is probably why they are soo poor .

    Great video Les, the 56 sounded superb pulling away with those new box wagons. Were they loaded with spent ballast from the Carstairs remodelling scheme ? I have to give you top marks for persevering all day when the weather was that bad.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways

    Wow, a bit of drama. It's dedication enough to be out there in such wet conditions, but the flooding warnings and re-directions... ooh, what a nightmare. I would have to look up and see how long a diversion to Glasgow to get to Edinburgh would take. Not the quickest way home. Nice mix of trains again, Leslie! Hopefully you stayed dry inside your jacket and such!

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Anthony. Usually they send Edinburgh passengers via Newcastle. I suspect someone at Avanti or TPE thought they were being clever trying the Glasgow Route, even though it means a trip down onto the Glasgow underground. One advantage of the station is the roof and canopies so I largely stay dry!

    Hi Les The 56 on those "Land Recovery" boxes seems unusual, not seen those on your videos before, interesting and 66434 with those few old SPA's and an OBA, really interesting (for me anyway, its good for seeing how weathered they are, lol). I suppose with the flooding TPE have a genuine excuse for stopping trains short for once, as opposed to stopping them at any other time, the logs always seem to get through though! Take care out there, thanks

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  Рік тому +1

      Thanks Peter. It must have been last year since Colas used 56s on Carlisle Yard to Longport aggregate trains. I did film them then. The wagons are rather smart. I wonder how much they paid Carlsberg to use their logo and catch phrase. I was please with the old wagons.

    • @LeslieGilpinRailways
      @LeslieGilpinRailways  Рік тому

      Thanks!. Carlisle has always been an exchange point whether between companies up to 100 years ago, or for changing locos or as a junction. There were separate goods lines away from the station until 1984 but they weren't by any means meant as a through route.
