Just did mine. Helped a lot. My vacuum line was also severely cracked. Could've been the initial culprit but I did the seals as well. Thanks

What you have showed is one way of installing the actuator back on the shaft and mating it to the transfer case. I did it a little bit different because when I have pulled my actuator off the thing was full of gear oil. Needless to say that the seal was pretty much shot. Anyway, once I got the actuator on the bench I opened it up and removed all the guts inside in order to clean all of the oil dry. At the same time I figured to leave a couple of pin wheels out so when I go back to install it on the lever shaft there’s a less chance of damaging the new seal by the shaft’s teeth while sliding it in. It goes in obviously without any resistance. Once the shaft is in the actuator, install the guts back in making sure pin wheel is engaged with the shaft’s teeth and put the back cover on with 7 bolts. I know it sounds a bit complicated but as long as you make sure how and where the pieces(guts) of the actuator go when you first pulled it apart, then it’s workable. I didn’t prefer going this route but I wanted to make sure to get all of the oil out of the unit, plus I figure it would lessen the chances of destroying the seal. That’s my two cents on that, but you did a good job on video, nevertheless.

I just did that hose repair on my ‘05 4-Runner then changed fluid.
Shifts into all 4wd modes including diff lock very smoothly now.
    No grinding or any trouble.
Before, I was having issues with 4wd low and intermittent grinding.
Vacuum leaks effect many things! 👍
Oh, plus my old fluid had little bubbles in it.
    Confirmation of leak.

Thank you so much for posting this video it saved me thousands of dollars if I would have let Lexus Service do the work. Transmission work scares me so I would have definitely not even attempted this job without your video - It was so easy to do. I even changed my transfer case oil while I was at it. Big thanks again! 🙂

So glad I could help! Great to hear you were able to tackle this job. If you haven't drained and filled your front and rear differentials you should do that as well. It's the same procedure as the transfer case. It is super easy and well worth doing. If you want to watch I cover that in the Transmission Differential Fluid Change video.

That seal kit is probably also for the v8 4runner, it has 2 shafts, second shaft goes in that blank hole you pointed at and is for high/ low range

Wow that was easy as Pie.. Over a decade ago, I had the same problem with my 4th Gen 4runner 4.7L. Mine was leaking and at that time, I took it to a shop which charged me about 2 grand to fix the leak. 😠 Thank God(And knock on Wood) my GX has not had any leaks or troubles with the Actuator/Center Diff. Thanks for continuing to bring us content.

Thanks! Glad I got to mine before it filled with gear oil. Its a time bomb if you haven't replaced that seal, plan to do it when the weather is nice. Replace the seals and inspect that vacuum line before it fails and costs you more than an hour or two in the driveway.

@@GX470PracticalMaintenance Oh for sure.. I'll have to plan on buying that seal kit you showed in the video. Again, Thank You for your thorough yet simple videos. Especially for someone who learns better by watching your videos than looking at diagrams.. lol

I did this about a month ago and mine is leaking again. But I think just from the new oring not the seal this time. The first time the actuator was filled with oil. So I am going to pull it off again :(

Hello wondering how that seal is holding up anymore leaks ? I'm about to tackle this one on my v84r it's been leaking and I've been filling it and still engages correctly. Thanks for posting the link for the seals and the video

Hey I dont know if you will reply, but I changed out my actuator and when I turned it on I drove a bit to get it to engage. The vsc light is on and the center diff lock is solid. But when I went to go park and turn it off, the vsc light turns off then the center diff light is constantly blinking.

Should we put a little diff oil on the inside of the new seal to help it slide onto the shaft? Don't want to cut or score the new seal.

I have the same code pop up on my code reader. My diff locks fine but the “vsc off” light does not come on. Was that the case for you? Also did the the new seals cure the code?

    • @GX470PracticalMaintenance

Yes, all my codes were cleared. VSC turning off could be a lot of things. If the ECU is unhappy about practically anything it will disable all the traction control things.

My center diff is stuck and won’t disengage. I can’t seem to pull out the actuator. Could it be because the diff is locked.

    • @GX470PracticalMaintenance
      @GX470PracticalMaintenance  2 роки тому +1

Hmm, does it slide out a ways, but then sticks? Also, check your vacuum hose, you may be able to repair that first and get the diff lock to disengage. Reply back

I can't get those lights to go off after I replaced my actuator.

That may not be your only problem, what codes do you have? Do you have access to Toyota TechStream with the correct cable? The GX will give up on all driver assist controls if it has any issues with a myriad of systems: brakes, ignition, throttle, etc. It uses all those systems in concert to manage driver assist.
