  • Toyota LC200 Center diff lock light flashes, mainly on a cold morning. The light usually turns off after the driveline has warmed up. This is caused by worn contacts in the center diff actuator. Operating the center diff lock on a regular basis can help prevent this.

mate, thanks for this video...absolutely brilliant. Wife called me saying these lights were on and was in a bit of panic as she was a long way from any service centre. After watching this vid I was confident there was no mechanical issue and once the drivetrain warmed up the lights went off exactly as you said and she was back on her way home. thanks very much

thank you for this! The Diff lock switch just appeared unexpectedly in my Prado GXL150 (while my wife was driving it). "Use it, or lose it" means I will be doing some solid 4Wd'ing again soon!!! (I sent your video to my wife to explain). Thankfully the diff lock light disappeared from it's own volition... I'll get this checked next service!

Been having intermittent issue with same thing thanks a bunch, we will give the hi/low and ce ter diffs a few operations and see if the flashing light becomes less common, if it still persists we will maybe try some wet and dry on the contacts or to replace module

I for one have, pulled the plugs and sprayed them which worked for me. If it happens again I will try your fix. It might as have been off the road 7 months waiting for a new motor that has finally arrived. Dusted motor with 150k and barely been on a gravel road 🤬.

Always like your tutorials but this time I didn't understand my question is do you have to put the center diff on and drive for a while so that it doesn't break and do you have to do that too to the H4 and Hlow thanks.

I have a 2014 GXL that does this intermittently from a cold start up, you can still drive it but it won’t engage cruise control whilst CDL is flashing. Drive the car for 10-20 klms so it’s warmed up, turn engine off, restart and the CDL will no longer be flashing. As you stated it’s definitely related to cold, this car has done quite a bit of off road 4wd as well.

Thanks for the video. Any ideas as to why this appears to only happen in the cold? I regularly use my centre diff and have just recently returned from cape york, didn’t happen once up there - as soon I got into a cooler climate - happened on first startup. Funnily enough it seems to be a bit sticky disengaging the centre diff in cool conditions, and yeah didn’t happen once in cape york.

      Hi
Sliding contacts resistance will change with fluctuations in temperature. Contacts that have experienced wear will experience greater changes in resistance when temperatures are cold and improve when temperatures increase. The 4WD computer interprets these changes in resistance as abnormal and flashes the centre diff lock light.

    Hi Darrek,
Thanks for this informative video I was able to fix a customers 07/2014 LC200 just this morning after following the procedure you have demonstrated here.
Upon scanning the vehicle (Snap-On) I didn’t retrieve any fault codes and also no live data available for any of the 4WD system. I’m curious to know does the OEM Toyota tool give you any codes/data when this problem occurs?
    Many thanks,
    Ethan

      Hi
Thanks very much for the feedback, glad the video helped you. LC200 produced from 08/2015 will have DTC’s and data list available for review. Vehicles produced before that date have no diagnostic information available. DTC P17DF-Centre differential lock limit switch circuit may log when the centre diff lock light flashes.

What kind of grease do you use inside the actuator. Thanks so much. Great video & about to tackle this job. My 200 series LC 4lo light and VSC lights came on, then I pushed the center lock diff button and now all 3 are on & center lock won't turn off, just blinks. Would you suggest the same procedure for all or is this just for the center locking diff. My wife hasn't used any 4wd in 3.5 years and NEVER put in 4lo. Thanks so much again. wT

      Hi
Thanks for reaching out and leaving great feedback. We don’t have the grease specification as it’s not listed in the repair manual. This is because the actuator is not a serviceable part. There should be sufficient grease in the actuator to perform a clean and regrease. Is there an engine light illuminated as well, together with the other lights?

Excellent Video - very informative. i have a 2015 Sarah with 230+K. Lots of off-road work with the CDL being engaged and disengaged. I am starting to have this problem occur when cold to the point that I now, when off road, I always park the car overnight with the CDL engaged (even if i don't need it as when parked in a high traction camping spot where you may disengage the CDL to help with parking and maneuvering)
Does removing the contaminated grease fix the issue as in your video you removed and then replaced the same part. It still had the pitting problem. Why not replace the part with a new one to stop the problem coming back?
I have a 2015 Sarah, I am thinking given the K's on my car and the lots of water crossing its done (maybe some water contamination) i am fearful my actuator may be in worse shape. What would the part number and approximate cost of the part be?
Again thanks for an excellent video - i am local to Nunawadding - i may even book my car in with you guys to replace the part

    • @nunawadingtoyota8134
      @nunawadingtoyota8134  8 місяців тому

      Hi
Thanks for getting in touch. Parts replacement is an option to restore correct operation of centre diff lock. You need to remove and disassemble the transfer to replace the actuator. The cost of the actuator is close enough to the cost of the whole transfer assembly so may as well replace the whole transfer assembly. If your Sahara is post 08/2015 production, there is a software update available to improve the issue, but depending on the condition of the contacts, not always successful. Breather hose on top of actuator can crack and allow water into the internals.
Disassembling and cleaning the contacts improves the condition. Operating the centre diff lock regularly also improves the condition.
Thank you for the great feedback 🍺🍺

Love the video, thanks. Sometimes I wish I lived in Melbourne. We recently bought a 2nd hand 2014 LC200 and this problem has just started. The vehicle was used for touring and NOT off roading. • @nunawadingtoyota8134

Thanks for the nice comment. Operate the centre diff lock regularly and the contacts may clean up enough for the light to stop flashing. No need to drive the car, just do it stationary. Check the breather hose on top of the actuator. It can crack and allow water entry into the actuator.

      Thanks for getting in touch.
We recommend that you operate the centre diff lock and cycle between H4-L4-H4 on a regular basis. There is no magical number but the more you operate the system the better. You could choose to operate it once a week as an example. You don't need to drive anywhere, you can choose to operate the system when you are stationary.

hi Do Toyota specify a particular lube for this worm drive ?? Worm spiral drives use a dedicated lube and it is hard to get in smaller quantities . Spiral drive lube typically leaves a surface coating which works better than Extreme Pressure additive . Need some for wiper motors and electric window motors.

Thickness similar to double thick cream . I used this on my 60yo electric window motors .

Hi. Thanks so much for this video it is excellent. My 2013 has been doing this intermittently for months. I realise there was another comment that was similar but just to confirm is the only fix to take the actuator off and clean the contacts (with your finger) and regreasing like you did in the video? Or could it improve by simply starting to turn the diff lock on every so often (or is this just for prevention and not useful once it starts doing this)? Thanks again.

Just for the record it did work! I turned the diff lock on and off for about 5-10 drives in a row and then once every week or 2 for the next couple of months and haven't had the flashing diff lock since so it would appear at least sometimes that's enough to smear the grease around for good contact. I'll try to keep doing it about once a month or so. Same for the low range.

I've recently purchased a 2008 Sahara LC200. It's done 150000kms and has never been in 4lo or had diff lock engaged. When I've tried to turn them on, they just flash and won't engage. Is there a way to get this working, or does it need these parts you've shown to be replaced??

    • @nunawadingtoyota8134

      Hi
      Thanks for getting in touch.
Diagnosing the system to understand whether it's mechanical or electrical is a good starting point.
Should the test results confirm that an actuator replacement is required then I would suggest replacing the complete transfer assembly. Difference in cost between actuator and complete transfer is approx $800. If you just purchase the actuator then you will need to disassemble the transfer to install it and this adds to the labour cost.

A couple of hours should be enough to remove, clean and lubricate the CDL actuator-$340
