I can't stand the corporate buzzwords "creatives" and "product "

    Very good point at 16:36
Rippa's vetting process is creating an artificial barrier to entry. How does this service help the indie space? Indies and comicsgaters are already disadvantaged, and now Rippasend is another company that's gonna reject them.

34:32 it's cool that you are willing to help other indies. I'm assuming that most indies would be open to helping fellow indies with tips and knowledge each has learned along the way. It almost feels disingenuous and against the 'spirit' of the indie scene to want to convert your guidance into an exclusive service the way Rippa is.

That's the biggest takeaway, I think. Setting aside the obviously bad PR Rippa has as a whole in the sphere among those that don't have his imprint on their tonsils, that is.
It's one thing to say you're creating a new service aimed at publishing, it's another to say that you're going to charge people for the service up front, instead of after the fact like most publishing services---It's heavily implied, at the very least, since, to date, it's virtually unclear whether those costs are up front or not because there's no communication at all.
To say that your service---which will charge people for the privilege, assuming they are even accepted by that service to begin with---will be a boon to help "indie creators" is undoubtedly jarring.
When you go out of your way to effectively shit on the very method of funding that many independently funded artists rely on to do what they do, you're not going to exactly make yourself look benevolent, instead you're looking like you believe yourself the arbiter of how to create comics properly.

B.A. has to be the most even keel guy in CG and indie comics. This was a great video and you took on Eric's advertisement point by point.

You guys dont get the 4d chess going on. Rippa has written dozens of shitty books and sees that people arent falling for his "But chuck dixon wrote it so you cant critize me!" and decided to pawn off all these shitty projects unto other creators. 99% of all these "new" proejcts will just be his own shitty comics that he will pay a marketing fee to others.

Good video, B.A.! I'm a nobody and I have no problem delivering books to backers. If I have to send books to Rippa, might as well send them to Critical Blast instead, like we've been doing for years. Quality service guaranteed.

I agree the risk of printing 10's of thousands of book before the campaign is an unneeded risk. Iconic Comics gets their comics done beforehand too, but they do a crowdfunding so they know how many to print. I assume to order plus maybe 20% additional overprint for their website.
If anything, finding the correct printer and doing prepress correctly is much hard part than even fulfillment. In almost cases fulfilment for orders under 1000 , you should do it yourself for domestic orders. Unless you are the best of the best as an artist, then maybe a cost analysis says you should always be drawing and not spending time shipping.

This video was so good that I was going to recommend it to Ethan Van Sciver...and then I remembered it was Ethan Van Sciver who recommended it to me! I wouldn't be surprised if your video gets EFAP'd on his show no later than Tuesday.

Late campaigns arent late because its really hard to deliver the books lol theyre late because the artist or somewhere ELSE down the line, someone is taking their sweet ass time. Cashgrab was late because of the divorce issue AND the printer delays. EVS is always late becuase hes always running his imaginationg trying to deliver more and more and more like some sort of genius in a very bizzarre level. Loner Star is late because the artist dont give a fuck about it anymore and cant be bothered to finish it. Literally none of the issues with "fullfillment" are with "its hard to ship it". Even those that are taking long to ship, like EVS, take long because of the massive ammount of custom orders and regular orders in general. EVS is "suffering from success" lol but that being said, once the shipping actually STARTS, everybody is cool with the delays AFTER that. Anything else that campaigns have an issue with simply cannot be solved and has notyhing to do with a shipping issue. Thats why Rippa wants projects that are already finished and ready to ship. Which is... who? WHo does crowdfunding that doesnt need money to create the project? Yellow Flash? Sure, we can all "Create our project" if we just find someone else to do all the work for free but then again, if theyre willing to do all that free work, why not make them ship it too while were at it lol

Eric has effectively created a vanity publisher that is highly selective of who they take on, and he's acting like this is a home run for him.

    serious question:
for promoting indie creators, instead of complaining about youtubers not promoting small indies, why not create a magazine where creators can publish 1-2 issues, or one-shot, and sell it to actual comics fan audience ? for ex the magazine could cost between 2-5$ (not expensive)
kind of like in Japan where they have Shonen Jump, but instead, it's specifically to get creators out there in the market.
Will it work with American public ?

@@fabiocontraol unfortunately, unless it's being headed by or promoted by folks with massive reach it wouldn't be able to raise much money or get in front of many people
Which is the crux of the issue
Many of these UA-camrs are simply hypocritical complain tubers

Other fulfillment companies do the same as Eric and if he's not offering something unique, like actively promoting small creators and pushing their projects, then this isn't helping me or any other small creators.
Fram what I understand he's rounding up his big youtube buddies or other influencers who happen to bring out their own comics... so yeah, small fish like us are again not getting any chances.

I was hoping you would comment on the "proof-of-concept phase" term he dropped, but you let it pass by. I still don't understand what that means. Proof-of-concept is usually for a device that shows the device can work. Or for a game, showing that the idea can be translated into a video or board game experience and at least has the potential to be fun. A book is a book. The concept of a book was proved thousands of years ago. The concept of a comic almost 100 years ago. How does a new comic need a "proof of concept".
Re-watching this, I realized just how many meaningless phrases like that and other vague phrases he uses...just like every SJW business that doesn't want to be held accountable for anything. The only thing we really learn in this whole 5.5 minute video is he's going to give permission to hand-selected clients to use only what services he deigns to provide.
33:00 You seem to be under the mistaken impression that Eric wants to help anyone else but Eric. He doesn't even want to help his "friends". He just wants a cut of their money. Honestly, at this point, I'm not even sure I'm angry at/about him any more, I think I just pity him and his avarice.

    • @b.a.turner_vc

I agree, and I do think it is just to make money and not to help others, I was trying to not be too direct lol
To me proof of concept would mean an idea on paper or a script, so pre art and lettering etc

  • @A.Campbell

Seems like Eric's reinventing the wheel.
Like you said, Critical Blast already does this,
If you're at the professional level there's Image Comics.
And if you're just starting out, shipping 1-500 units you'd just do it yourself.
IMO, Eric is leveraging his fanbase to get a cut of their action.
But, at the end of the day, he's running a multimillion dollar bidnez and opening up new streams of revenue is all apart of bidnez. Maybe he'll evolve his bidnez to being a publishing house.

The only people I've seen excited about this (besides his friends) are people with clearly no knowledge about publishing.
