- Note: This is not a professional OSFirstTimer unboxing and review, just a personal unboxing I made for myself but I thought I'd share it with you guys. I film everything in my archive in 4K now however for the sake of screen resolution videos on the OSFirstTimer channel will remain in 1080p yet filmed with this much better camera mainly due to recording the desktop and having the text readable on 1080p monitors.
Um... Well here we go again. Me forking out a bunch more money for yet another tech product. The surface pro 3 with the core i5 processor and 128 gig of SSD storage space. Thing is though I didn't actually want to buy this thing. My surface pro 1 is still great and I would be happy to keep it however there is a serious safety issue with it.
A few months ago the cord that came with the surface pro 1 stopped charging it so I had to replace the cord and since they didn't sell the surface pro 1 cords anymore I had to buy a generic one. BAD MOVE! The generic one is super dangerous!
While you charge the Surface Pro 1 with the generic charging cord the device becomes extremely unstable. The touch screen messes up like crazy making it unusable and the surface burns up dramatically. Worst of all though is the cord itself. The power brick burns up dramatically due to the surface pro overloading it causing it to really burn your skin if you go to touch it... It's not safe!
One night I left it charging and walked out of my room. Came back in and before long it looked like smoke was coming out of the power brick (very faint like heat steam). Instantly turned the surface pro off as well as the power and it was still burning in my hands. If left unattended for longer it could have potentially caused a fire and killed me.
So to be honest I didn't want the surface pro 3, of course its better than the surface pro 1 but I didn't want to shell out another thousand dollars for something that was working so well up until the charger stopped working. I've already spent heaps of money in the last year and I don't get paid much for my job.
Seriously though... that's enough spending! I specifically avoided doing this video on OSFirstTimer professionally so I wouldn't get hated for owning so much cool stuff. It's not my fault I swear, I didn't plan to buy this for the sake of updating! I'm cursed!
Anyway consider this an OSFirstTimer Easter Egg or hidden unboxing video that just happened to be filmed on April fools day. On that note the specific surface pro 3 filmed in this video was returned to the shop and replaced with another as it had 3 dead pixels on the screen which I didn't notice when filming. Also I went and replaced the red keyboard with a black one as the coloured keyboards look out of place with the black and white theme of my room.

That generic charger almost started a fire and killed you o.o? Jeez, that's scary! This is why you should use the charger that comes with a device. A different one may make it charge faster but it's the wrong voltage, it could mess up the battery. (I almost just said 'batter'. How amazing.)

Have you noticed that there was a loop in the surface pro 3 type cover box? The loop to hold the pen?
You could wait until the surface 3 came out, and save money

Had a surface pro 4 also, replaced it with a MacBook , the surface pro 4 was awful for me also.

Hey Phil, I'm moving up to Year 9 soon, and I really want to be a computer scientist, so do you know what GCSEs (or your equivalent) I need, obviously Maths and Computer Science but I'm wondering if I need to do a computing one and an ICT GCSE. By the way I am a huge fan, you are the one channel who inspired me to learn about computers and OSs! 😀
In highschool I chose Software Development and Design as well as Information Processes and Technology. Not sure if that helps you or not though, just saying what I chose. I didn't end up choosing to go into the computer field though... I became an Early Childhood Educator

***** Finale Notepad 2007 (released 2006) on Windows XP... Just trying to find the time when my mum is free so we can film. That's why I dislike co-op channels. They are fun but a nightmare to arrange filming times.
Philip's right, having more than 1 channel is fun but stressful for filming time. I have TheYellowPolarBear2 and I barely upload vids to it cuz' I'm busy on my original channel.
TheYellowPolarBear True but the main issue is when you film with a second person. OSFirstTimer episodes can only be filmed when both my mother and I have time. Sometimes she might have time but I'll be at work then she will be at work but I will have time. We both have to be available when its time to film an episode.
OSFT Historic VLogs An episode on Finale Notepad sounds awesome, since your mom (or mum) stated that she is horrible at music. I can't wait to see it, but don't feel rushed. The true subscribers will wait. I love your vids, thanks for making them.

Hey Phil, I've watched this video so many times now. xD I know how unusable the Surface Pro 1 is with a generic charger - I have a Surface Pro 1 and I got scammed out of a "genuine charger". It was overheating like crazy and damaged my battery slightly so I have a little while before I go to college to get a new battery. Anyway, mine did the same exact thing as your Surface Pro 1 with all the touch points and stuff when you tap once, not even the Surface Pro 1 pen would work correctly with the charger in, I'm not sure if you experienced that issue. However nowadays, on eBay you can find chargers for the Surface Pro 1/2 for cheap and you just gotta make sure they're genuine. I luckily bought another one and my Surface works awesome now, just the battery which sucks but at least I can use it. I doubt you have the Surface Pro 1 anymore or the Pro 3 but yeah, I thought why not explain this.
Sounds like you went on a Surface adventure lol - I had my sour experience w/ Surface Pro 4, getting in to the laptop hybrid form factor. I used to dream of getting one and hands-on w/ it. The sub-par 3hr battery (since it's pre-owned from a business) rlly drove me out of it. Now, I've decided to give it another go w/ the Surface Pro 7 Plus, the tablet is in good condition, over 90% battery health so I hope my experience should be good!
Why did u get the Surface Pro 3 instead of the Surface 3 becuase its a lot cheaper but its not Windows RT instead Full-Windows

Yea my dad had a surface pro 3 and when you charge it, it over heats(badly) it feels like it’s gonna set on fire and I’m using the proper charger.
Edit: I got a surface pro 5, same problem, and it’s base spec, i5 4gb ram 128gb ssd intel uhd graphics 617. It is soooo slow and terrible.
Edit 2.0: contacts for keyboard broken, awful. Never buying a surface again.(btw it’s the contacts on the surface not the keyboard)

Yeah I wouldn't be surprised 4gb ram is slow and terrible... I recently grabbed a Surface Pro 7 plus w/ 8gb ram and I'm fearing it's not gonna be enough for today's standard of multitasking, most people are going w/ 16gb ram nowadays (2023-24)

Sam Sam exactly why I didn't want to buy it lol. I love tablet computers and my surface 1 was fine till the potential fire hazard started so I had to get the surface 3. Seriously, not getting anything else this year... Till I get a larger backup drive next January :(

Element Technology Definitely wouldn't be using as a main computer. Have my Gaming PC I built for that :p. Just wanted something light to take with me places and use web and email on.
I know this comment is old, but I'd recommend a Surface Pro 1 in 2023, it still works perfectly fine and I can still do anything I need to and I use it for notes and that sorta stuff.
