Man, your mum is great. I don't mean it in a negative or filthy way, but rather she's so joyful and cheerful person, and she's absolutely adorable. I think that both of you did a great job by doing these series and sharing them with the rest of the world ;)
When you tested the iPad it was already on and on stand-by... the surface was powered down so I believe that if the iPad was powered down it would be more difficult to turn on than the surface.
StartIsBack is the best Windows 8 start menu. It nearly looks 100% identical to the Start menu in Windows 7. You should check it out, I'd highly recommend it. It only costs 3 U.S. dollars to purchase, but it comes with a 30 day trial, and you can have it as a companion with the Windows 8 start screen.
The issue with a shut down option not being handy is because Microsoft recommend that you _never_ shut down Windows 8+. It will try to download, install and apply updates during long periods of standby, but can't do anything once shut down. Standby means your device is always ready for you to get working, where only turning the device on when you want to use it and shutting it down as soon as you're done means that it's constantly getting behind on it's general maintenance, and forced to do that stuff in the background while you work, which makes your device feel very sluggish. They've learned this from iOS and Android, but it's also completely contradictory to EU environmental guidelines which actually recommend that all household devices be physically unplugged from the mains when not actively in use. That may work for battery backed Windows tablets, but they'll always be flat when you go to them in that case. XD
@Alex Playzz Windows 8+ includes any Windows after 8... So Windows 10 (any build) they still want it put to sleep, not turned off... But that doesn't help with Laptops which quickly go flat if you don't properly turn them off when not in use.

Trying to tap stuff on the desktop just shows how much Windows 10 has improved things. Now, all the menus are expanded for touch use in the new Tablet Mode in 20H2 (and in the older Tablet Mode), as well as File Explorer's navigation tools, the drag area for windows themselves, etc.

Actually a swipe from the right not only brings out the charms, but if you notice the time, WiFi status and power level appear in a large box off to the left hand side of the screen.
Your mom is spot on when she says Windows 8 is much more suitable to a touchscreen device. I've had it on a desktop for several months and have gotten used to it, but just recently, I've had the opportunity to work with a Surface Pro for a couple of days. The Surface Pro is an outstanding piece of hardware. I'm considering making a purchase of one myself.
It's funny that the changes your mom suggested were implemented in windows 8.1. At the very least the power button location and close buttons for apps. Keep up the good work. Very unique method of reviewing. Nice family btw. Cheers. :-)
They are both very different devices and recently I've had trouble comparing them. I like the ipad (My dad's iPad now) for the greatly designed apps and the amazing number of them unlike the surface app store with poorer quality apps and a lot less that the apple app store. The iPad is also much nicer to hold than the surface pro. I love the ability to run a full windows 8 and desktop apps though. It really makes me feel unrestricted!

The Surface runs RT but the Surface Pro runs the full version of Windows 8 with the ability to run both desktop and metro apps. Check out the surface pro on the official microsoft website for more information.
I think the best Startmenu out there now is the StartIsBack. It's totally native so it doesn't use any extra processes or services. In functionality it's very similar to Start8, but it's so much more better, and also cheaper, only $3 for 2 PC.
Other operating systems didn't have a tutorial though. I still think she should've sat down with it on a desktop again, bring the start menu back with the ClassicShell/start8 and it's great. If they left out metro people would be saying "Any way of getting it on Windows 8?". Even with metro in the background Windows 8 performed better than 7.

I used to say the exact same (Win8 being more suited for touch screens), until I got used to it. I absolutely love Windows 8 now. I have it installed on both my desktop and laptop, and my Acer Iconia w3 tablet. With "Classic Shell" you can get the original start menu back, which is what I used to use, until I just didn't want to have that anymore. I honestly think I've become more productive with Windows 8 than I was with any other OS. People should just give it time.
Just some headsups: 1. You can find all programs by dragging down on Start Screen. You can hold (pull down, or right click) the apps to pin them on Start Screen or Task Bar. You can thus put things like Calculator on your Start Screen. 2. You can rename the "bunch of tiles" into things, so kinda like categories or folders. 3. To shutdown you can also long hold Power button (until it shuts down, but not after since it may reboot) or hold both Power and Volume Up (Two button shutdown). 4. iirc Simply dragging would've worked for the tiles. At least this is the case in Windows 10 which they did improve the Metro UI. This comes from someone who has received a Win8 laptop (No touchscreen) and was only taught to slide down to close windows. Idk why but it clicked for me quite well. Also thinking of the dragging apps away that reminds me of what happened in Mac OSX Jaguar, where she simply dragging the windows off the screen to get rid of it. I think this is kind of what Microsoft is thinking.
I think you should let her try it on a desktop computer again, Its not bad once you realise the start screen is just a big start menu and you learn your way around it. Its windows 7, without a start menu, and very fast

This video is useful in various ways. What a nice mum! She is convincing as a lady who simply wants to get on with things, and therefore shows mixed feelings along the way when she can't. However, she remains positive, and she sums up her experience giving a fair amount of credit to Windows 8 on a tablet. Her voice should be heard. I agree wrt. to the tutorial. In fact, done wisely I believe that could totally circumvent the frustrations.
Everything is done as a first experience and none of this is rehearsed or acted otherwise they wouldn't be her true impressions. This video was 49 minutes long cut down to 29 minutes long. I have to keep it short so people wanna watch it and keep the words flowing without stumbling. For example if I say "I love the windows 8, err, I mean surface pro because its nice to touch err I mean, nice to hold and ultra portable" I need to make that better so that's why I edit. To keep it smooth and short
General rule of thumb is anything intensive will not work well on the intel IGP. I believe there is a clone of that app in the app store that runs really well (I have it on my laptop). The cpu is underclocked version of an I5 so cpu wise it isn't too bad. The intel IGP will really slow things down though as the drivers aren't made very well, but this has been improving and I would recommend waiting for the new set of tablets that will increase the performance greatly.
The first time I turned secure boot off I had a problem rebooting. Finally after 10 minutes I got it to boot back into windows. It had a lot of problems so I decided not to play with Linux on it anymore.
ha your mum is epic... i really hope people at Microsoft have seen this video as i'm sure your mum isn't the only person who feels this was about Windows 8. I had to install a program in the end to make it look like 7. Stardock if you're interested
It's true, the Surface really needs a short introduction to all the gestures, but I felt the same way the first time I used an Apple touch product. Apple devices are so widespread that people really take it for granted that the "Intuitive" touch UI is only intuitive because you're used to it.
When I got a Windows 8 computer, I changed it to windows 7, because in the start menu, there are ads for things I don't need. I tried to get rid of them but they don't go away.
Windows 8 is not only for tablets, some PCs like all-in-ones with touchscreen displays run windows 8 perfectly. For non-touch devices IOBIT released start menu 8, which restores a windows 7 start menu.
You know that you can do exactly the same with Linux, you just need to upgrade Ubuntu 8.04 to a more recent release like 11.10 or superior. Terminal is no longer needed there and have some great software.
On the first video on OSFirstTimer diana said you get used to something then they change it and my reply to that is they have to change otherwise there would be no point in releasing a new operating system.
ExclusiveSigma there are massive differences about different english; we have english (us), english (aus) , english (uk) .... in this case english (aus) and english (uk) have the most similarities in types of spelling. For example of that is the word "realize", this word is in the form of english (us) but if youre going to have it spelled by an englishman they're gonna spell it as "realise" :D Hope that helped your confusions :)

Mum is great! She is pretty sharp and brave too! I love all the questions. Sure shows how hard it is to get into Win 8 without any instruction!
No it kept looping for a few minutes
General rule of thumb is anything intensive will not work well on the intel IGP.
I believe there is a clone of that app in the app store that runs really well (I have it on my laptop). The cpu is underclocked version of an I5 so cpu wise it isn't too bad. The intel IGP will really slow things down though as the drivers aren't made very well, but this has been improving and I would recommend waiting for the new set of tablets that will increase the performance greatly.
Thanks for the compliment
At 10:28, it looks like there's a reflection of a ductless split system air conditioner, is it?
You can long hold the standby button to shut it off too.
Introducing Windows WallStreet
3:09 However, I said in a previous video that I would look at the tutorial before trying it out
When I got a Windows 8 computer, I changed it to windows 7, because in the start menu, there are ads for things I don't need. I tried to get rid of them but they don't go away.
Windows 8 is not only for tablets, some PCs like all-in-ones with touchscreen displays run windows 8 perfectly. For non-touch devices IOBIT released start menu 8, which restores a windows 7 start menu.
Surface RT has Windows RT but Surface Pro has Windows 8 pro
trust me... not a single one was intentional, by me at least...
For example of that is the word "realize", this word is in the form of english (us) but if youre going to have it spelled by an englishman they're gonna spell it as "realise" :D
Hope that helped your confusions :)
On November 3rd 8:59 (maybe even 9:59 or 10:59, because the time in a virtual environment is often messed up) it wasn't dark, but on March 26th it's already dark at 7:23. Winter is coming on the other side of the globe.
Beautiful sister!!! Congratulations for your family!
Such a lonely day
And it's mine
The most loneliest day of my life
Such a lonely day
Should be banned
It's a day that I can't stand
The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life
Such a lonely day
Shouldn't exist
It's a day that I'll never miss
Such a lonely day
And it's mine
The most loneliest day of my life
And if you go, I wanna go with you
And if you die, I wanna die with you
Take your hand and walk away
The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life
The most loneliest day of my life
Life
Such a lonely day
And it's mine
It's a day that I'm glad I survived
