Mum tries out Windows 8 (2012) on a Surface Pro (2013)

- Here we go, another Tablet OSFirstTimer Video! This time Diana tries out Windows 8 on the Surface Pro... Let's just say this video went much smoother than the first ever OSFirstTimer video where Diana tried Windows 8 on a desktop computer. She definitely feels Windows 8 is optimally run on a tablet PC as opposed to a desktop computer.
More info on the Surface Pro here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsof...
Don't forget to visit the OSFirstTimer forums here: osfirsttimer.freeforums.org/
Tasks Given:
- Turn on the Surface Pro and log in
- What time is it?
- Write, save and open a text document
- What's 7.6 septillion - 3.4 quintillion
- Change the desktop background
- Change the Start Screen Background
- Explore the operating system yourself
- Turn off your computer
The mother in this video uses Windows XP (2001) as her main OS duel booted with Elementary OS (a fast Linux distro). Would you like to see her try out Linux, Mac, Windows or other operating systems through history such as OS/360 (1966)? Then give your suggestions in the comments section. Give this video lots of likes, views, favorites and comments if you want my mum to try out other operating systems. I am open to any operating system suggestions you give especially if these videos go semi-viral (over 100,000 views). This channel is dedicated to me "introducing" people (mum, dad, me) to different operating systems they have never used before and leaving them to suffer in confusion struggling to do anything in an unknown computer environment... or see if these other operating systems are better than Microsoft Windows. - Розваги

I died.
SAME HAHAHA
"That's pretty sad if that's what you like touching" Oh my god that killed me.
Ayy lmao
i agree
Hi Dylan
Hi dylan
yeah I agree
Ah, so I'm not the only one who gets a buzz (literally) by pressing the surface pro logo button ;)
"That's pretty sad if that's what you like touching"
yes
That’s the Windows logo
Coolest Mom ever.
Yea
I know right (kinda late, sorry)
Yeah
@@meta1139 yeah I agree we are very late
@boy damen lol
Okay, Diana gave microsoft the idea to put the power icon on the start screen in Windows 8.1
when did they do that? then again I only used Win8.1 in a corporate environment, where they don't update anything.
+ThatGTAFan720 the new win 8.1 update (2014) and win 8.1 was released in 2013
Yes_ yep, just updated my new Acer Ultrabook from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, and there is a Power and search Icon on the Start Screen.
Actually, when Diana tried out the Windows 10 Technical Preview, Phillip stated that Microsoft sent them an e-mail saying that they watched their videos involving Windows 8 and said that Diana’s feedback and criticism actually helped them improved and add some stuff in Windows 8.1.
@@IntellitechStudios but there is a start menu
"Oh you know what? I've got an extra small little pen for you"
"*laughs* oh god I thought you're going to say something else"
"Oh you know what? I've got an extra small loan of a million dollers"
You guys are great. I bought my 92yo mum a Chromebook, and she's having a grand time facebooking her grandkids and clicking her teeth on UA-cam :)
"Can you get to the desktop?" (first vid)
Isn't this the desktop?
"Can you get to the desktop?" (this vid)

also i like pressing the surface key

What do u mean good game

I'm so glad you commented that. Now I can be 100% sure that we both watched the same video. Started to get a bit woried :l

@@Exilor SB is a great original thinker.
I was only going along the lines of what she was saying. Notice my sentence is almost identical to her previous sentence?
The issue with a shut down option not being handy is because Microsoft recommend that you _never_ shut down Windows 8+. It will try to download, install and apply updates during long periods of standby, but can't do anything once shut down. Standby means your device is always ready for you to get working, where only turning the device on when you want to use it and shutting it down as soon as you're done means that it's constantly getting behind on it's general maintenance, and forced to do that stuff in the background while you work, which makes your device feel very sluggish.
They've learned this from iOS and Android, but it's also completely contradictory to EU environmental guidelines which actually recommend that all household devices be physically unplugged from the mains when not actively in use. That may work for battery backed Windows tablets, but they'll always be flat when you go to them in that case. XD
@Alex Playzz Windows 8+ includes any Windows after 8... So Windows 10 (any build) they still want it put to sleep, not turned off... But that doesn't help with Laptops which quickly go flat if you don't properly turn them off when not in use.
The focus is on operating systems, not devices. Surface pro 2 runs Windows 8.1 however a surface pro 1 can also be upgraded to windows 8.1. the only real difference between the 2 would be a potential performance boost.
When Diana said: Extra small little thing. Idk why I was laughing my head off for like 17 mins. LMAO 😂
19:47 Windows 8.1 update 1 does have the power menu into the start screen
24:10 they actually did add an "x" button to all of the apps in the latest update

i was going to type that
windows 8.1??? the real name is ..another service pack....... ! LOL
Man, your mum is great. I don't mean it in a negative or filthy way, but rather she's so joyful and cheerful person, and she's absolutely adorable. I think that both of you did a great job by doing these series and sharing them with the rest of the world ;)
@junayed653what then
Everything is done as a first experience and none of this is rehearsed or acted otherwise they wouldn't be her true impressions. This video was 49 minutes long cut down to 29 minutes long. I have to keep it short so people wanna watch it and keep the words flowing without stumbling. For example if I say "I love the windows 8, err, I mean surface pro because its nice to touch err I mean, nice to hold and ultra portable" I need to make that better so that's why I edit. To keep it smooth and short
your mother is a techsavy, she understand really fast how computer works ! mine couldn't even do 10 % of that, even by explaining it 20 times, she would still forget it right after !
It depends , if she's not interested she wouldn't learn...
I love this lady. So open minded to new things. MAJOR THUMBS UP!!!!
The next "Mum tries out" will be Chrome OS however we may do a special video next.... I was thinking about doing a "talking bout operating systems prank". Basically I need to go up to random people on the street and list the names of 10 random operating systems in a conversation without them knowing I am talking about operating systems. If they get suspicious I lose e.g. "My brother Zorin OS said he would meet me at the Linux mint shop next to Ubuntu but I can't find him. I need to backtrack...
I love these vids! Your Mom makes me smile, I love how she just takes things in stride, and is so centered. Also, your little sister is just too cute!
Philip, I hope your little sister got better.
Trying to tap stuff on the desktop just shows how much Windows 10 has improved things. Now, all the menus are expanded for touch use in the new Tablet Mode in 20H2 (and in the older Tablet Mode), as well as File Explorer's navigation tools, the drag area for windows themselves, etc.
There is windows 11
@@mayabogdanova9506 I know, and I have Windows 11 on my Surface Pro 8. It's even better than what I described here.
After watching this video I am definitely not getting my parents windows 8.
I would have to move back in. This is crazy looool.
Lucky your mom is patient.
Thanks man saved me a life time of stress looooll. Great job.
I like the chemistry you guys have, super nice video. Lovely sister, poor girl she felt down :( God bless you all!
They are both very different devices and recently I've had trouble comparing them. I like the ipad (My dad's iPad now) for the greatly designed apps and the amazing number of them unlike the surface app store with poorer quality apps and a lot less that the apple app store. The iPad is also much nicer to hold than the surface pro. I love the ability to run a full windows 8 and desktop apps though. It really makes me feel unrestricted!
Am I the only one who actually liked windows 8 on desktop?
No
No. I loved it. I hate windows 10. I loved the start screen. It looked quite modern.
@@rohankhatri3226 same dude. I liked scrolling wallpapers and transparent wallpaper on a start screen. win10 felt boring.
@@rohankhatri3226 You can turn on tablet mode in the Notification Center and make the start menu like windows 8.
@@ThatRandomToast oh, I didn’t realise that’s a feature. Thanks for that, I might enable it 👍
Never heard of it... can you apply a patch on the normal XP to update it to the awesome fast version?
your mom is adorable and i love that she did all this and actually tried all these Operating systems. good on your mom being very adventurous.
Notice how he has StarCraft 2 and Steam installed on his tablet :)
yeah. 5 pc's are worth $99:99c! Diana :D!
Maybe on eBay :F
$20 for a crappy slow damaged windows xp netbook XD
Yeah buy some 1gb ram core duo rubbish that can barely run windows xp
Works awesome but if you zoom out too much or have lots of objects it gets laggy.
Your mum is lovely and its nice to see she isn't afraid to try new things. :)
i like touching the logo
Agreed. I may not have a Surface quite yet, but from all the reviews i've seen and including this one, I'm 100% sure that i'll definitely get a Surface Pro. What an awesome OS. Surƒace FTW
A fun thing to do in the travel app, tap a panorama photo and then move the Surface around. It moves with you like a window into the destination! pretty fun.
I think the best Startmenu out there now is the StartIsBack. It's totally native so it doesn't use any extra processes or services. In functionality it's very similar to Start8, but it's so much more better, and also cheaper, only $3 for 2 PC.
Your mom is spot on when she says Windows 8 is much more suitable to a touchscreen device. I've had it on a desktop for several months and have gotten used to it, but just recently, I've had the opportunity to work with a Surface Pro for a couple of days. The Surface Pro is an outstanding piece of hardware. I'm considering making a purchase of one myself.
"Good finger techniques?"
No wonder you told the kid to leave the room.
When you tested the iPad it was already on and on stand-by... the surface was powered down so I believe that if the iPad was powered down it would be more difficult to turn on than the surface.
Its cool how Diana's opinions were used to make Windows 8.1 and 10!
"I will not have this running on my computer"
Nevertheless,she does now
Technically, that was Windows 8.1, now 10.
ThatGTAFan720 Really? Because What I heard they only called it Windows 8
Windows 8.1 is essenitiallly Windows 8 SP1 or Windows 8 TH2.
I I call Windows 8.1 Windows 9
ThatGTAFan720 with the only difference that 8 and 8.1 didn't have the same NT version while TH1,TH2,RS1,RS2,RS3 did
I see we have fans of Aunt Diana here :D
It's funny that the changes your mom suggested were implemented in windows 8.1. At the very least the power button location and close buttons for apps. Keep up the good work. Very unique method of reviewing. Nice family btw. Cheers. :-)
Yep, anything you can stick into the usb port will work just like a desktop computer running windows 8 would
aww cute little sister :)
Lol that's pretty sad if that's what u like to touch lol high five
Dude, I totally adore your place :P
Nice video.

Shutdown the surface pro then turn it on while holding the volume up button. You can disable secure boot from there
Beautiful sister!!! Congratulations for your family!
Diana is funnyyyyyyy
Windows 7 should be supported by Microsoft FOREVER!
No. It should me ended right NOW
I FEEL YOU MAN
Lol why?
I know xp's better but...
Windows 7 Aero is amazing.
Windows 7’s interface is amazing.
Windows 7’s compatibility is amazing.
Windows 7 is amazing.
Diana is slowly getting better with Windows 8.1
I used to say the exact same (Win8 being more suited for touch screens), until I got used to it. I absolutely love Windows 8 now. I have it installed on both my desktop and laptop, and my Acer Iconia w3 tablet.
With "Classic Shell" you can get the original start menu back, which is what I used to use, until I just didn't want to have that anymore.
I honestly think I've become more productive with Windows 8 than I was with any other OS. People should just give it time.
This woman loves Wall street and iPads.
I am watching this on a surface
So am I lol :)
Prove it that he is a LIAR
Mum is great! She is pretty sharp and brave too! I love all the questions. Sure shows how hard it is to get into Win 8 without any instruction!
Awesome video!
Why does she keep associating this with the iPad? The Surface is much better than the iPad.
It would be even better if you could upgrade the tablet to windows 7. (I dont have a tablet so I wouldnt know if you can)
And she keeps associating it with the Ipad because they are both tablet computers, if you can even consider an Ipad a tablet computer *laughs hysterically*
Andy Liu
Wouldnt it be better to buy the windows 8 tablet and then upgrade it to windows 7?
Newer tablets usually mean better hardware.
because they're tablets... omg
*downgrade
But sadly dad wants me to have an ipad But! Good thing I have a windows 8 computer to make it like a Surface!

Agreed! I work for a State ran Mental Health facility and we're still on WinXP SP3. Thankfully Windows 8.x is NOT on our upgrade path. Id probably find a new job if I had to support this dog turd in an enterprise environment. However our so-called Physicians are getting shiny iPad Air's so they can do documentation. Shoot me!

That's just your opinion. Everyone likes what they like. I think Windows 8 is great! I'm getting a Surface 2 for Christmas and I've already tried Windows 8 on a non- touchscreen laptop. Sure it's different, but change is in nature, and software companies. :)

This video was fun and helpful. Thank you.
I always find your videos interesting. It's fascinating to listen to your Mom's comments as she struggles with each OS.
Actually a swipe from the right not only brings out the charms, but if you notice the time, WiFi status and power level appear in a large box off to the left hand side of the screen.
0:15-0:30 Diana is like, WTH is that!!!😂
The Surface runs RT but the Surface Pro runs the full version of Windows 8 with the ability to run both desktop and metro apps. Check out the surface pro on the official microsoft website for more information.
They should make the desktop app a bit bigger than the rest because its significant. I couldnt find mine till like 20 minutes later
oh yea, should have shown her freshpaint and using the pen to draw on the default windows paint. I also forgot to show her the store too...
I love how she wanted to zoom in with enthusiasm to open the file xD haha that would be fun
Yes! Uploaded!
The hotcorner can actually be removed in the settings. Or maybe that's just in Windows 8.1 :)
StartIsBack is the best Windows 8 start menu. It nearly looks 100% identical to the Start menu in Windows 7. You should check it out, I'd highly recommend it. It only costs 3 U.S. dollars to purchase, but it comes with a 30 day trial, and you can have it as a companion with the Windows 8 start screen.
great work : ) keep it up
you saw me unbox it... you didn't see Diana try it.
why am i the first person to like

im going to buy a microsoft surface soon
congrats on 100k

for me im on 26 subs :(
Great to hear ;)
Just some headsups:
1. You can find all programs by dragging down on Start Screen. You can hold (pull down, or right click) the apps to pin them on Start Screen or Task Bar. You can thus put things like Calculator on your Start Screen.
2. You can rename the "bunch of tiles" into things, so kinda like categories or folders.
3. To shutdown you can also long hold Power button (until it shuts down, but not after since it may reboot) or hold both Power and Volume Up (Two button shutdown).
4. iirc Simply dragging would've worked for the tiles. At least this is the case in Windows 10 which they did improve the Metro UI.
This comes from someone who has received a Win8 laptop (No touchscreen) and was only taught to slide down to close windows. Idk why but it clicked for me quite well. Also thinking of the dragging apps away that reminds me of what happened in Mac OSX Jaguar, where she simply dragging the windows off the screen to get rid of it. I think this is kind of what Microsoft is thinking.
The main thing I like about windows 8 is the graphics. Plain color looks really smart and sleek.
This video is useful in various ways.
What a nice mum! She is convincing as a lady who simply wants to get on with things, and therefore shows mixed feelings along the way when she can't. However, she remains positive, and she sums up her experience giving a fair amount of credit to Windows 8 on a tablet. Her voice should be heard.
I agree wrt. to the tutorial. In fact, done wisely I believe that could totally circumvent the frustrations.
"Isn't this the desktop?"
She said that 2 times. XD
21:48 That's me!
Not
I ran across the same thing with my father when I showed him my Surface Pro BUT, when my 5 year old little girl took hold of it, 30 minutes later she was in Nick Jr website playing games. After 2 months of use, she is so proficient she could actually explain, sell, and navigate better than Best Buy agents. Plus she has no OS biases that are so predominate in these types of videos... Love my pro, hopefully your Mom gets it.. haha
The first time I turned secure boot off I had a problem rebooting. Finally after 10 minutes I got it to boot back into windows. It had a lot of problems so I decided not to play with Linux on it anymore.
great demo.
On November 3rd 8:59 (maybe even 9:59 or 10:59, because the time in a virtual environment is often messed up) it wasn't dark, but on March 26th it's already dark at 7:23. Winter is coming on the other side of the globe.
General rule of thumb is anything intensive will not work well on the intel IGP.
I believe there is a clone of that app in the app store that runs really well (I have it on my laptop). The cpu is underclocked version of an I5 so cpu wise it isn't too bad. The intel IGP will really slow things down though as the drivers aren't made very well, but this has been improving and I would recommend waiting for the new set of tablets that will increase the performance greatly.
I love that view outside
I definitely agree.
"You're a noob" is not an acceptable excuse. Calling it Windows 8 does not mean you have to be an IT geek to use. You should think about everyone when making an OS: Noobs, Students, Parents, Experts. Bits of advice and complaints make up a perfect software so don't ignore it...
I saw this video many years ago, and it popped into my mind earlier today. Then completely out of my mind. Then I tonight completely random, I Googled Solaris to know what it was, and then the first video was from this channel.
You guys are making history.
This really showcases how the OS is confusing to people. I had no issue using it because I was interested in its design but normal people wouldn’t even be able to find a way to get to desktop or view all apps
windows 8.1 uses the desktop as the main area now; the start screen is used as a replacement of the start menu now
David Robitaille Yeah, I use 8.1 and always get taken to the desktop as a default. I barely use the start screen.
It's true, the Surface really needs a short introduction to all the gestures, but I felt the same way the first time I used an Apple touch product. Apple devices are so widespread that people really take it for granted that the "Intuitive" touch UI is only intuitive because you're used to it.
i totally agree on the date and time part. when i need the date, DANG IT , i have to open the desktop.
ExclusiveSigma there are massive differences about different english; we have english (us), english (aus) , english (uk) .... in this case english (aus) and english (uk) have the most similarities in types of spelling. For example of that is the word "realize", this word is in the form of english (us) but if youre going to have it spelled by an englishman they're gonna spell it as "realise" :D
Hope that helped your confusions :)
You know that you can do exactly the same with Linux, you just need to upgrade Ubuntu 8.04 to a more recent release like 11.10 or superior. Terminal is no longer needed there and have some great software.
Other operating systems didn't have a tutorial though. I still think she should've sat down with it on a desktop again, bring the start menu back with the ClassicShell/start8 and it's great. If they left out metro people would be saying "Any way of getting it on Windows 8?". Even with metro in the background Windows 8 performed better than 7.
