    A scene that was missed in this VLog was when "Arlene" was molesting Arnold Rimmer in the disco around 11:00. When she groped Rimmer's groin, he protested and said that "she was only after one thing!" Arlene rapidly retorted by saying ,"Why? How many have you got?" That must have been the best line in this episode.

    The dance number at the beginning was choreographed by Charles Augins who played Queeg in the previous episode.

      Yep, he voiced a couple of the puppets.
      Early on he was on the Elstree and Pinewood Studios books as a Singer / Dancer, so was called in for a whole bunch of stuff filmed in those studios. He's in the Little shop of Horror's too.

      I didn't know that but it makes sense because not only was the song a bit OTT (by that I mean very well done) for one show it was also repeated many times in other ways, certain parts, intros etc. with same chords and melody but different instruments.

    G'day from Aussie land!
    Great video, good summary. It's a quick way of getting through the episodes and the commentaries are entertaining.
    I was a fan of Red Dwarf in Seasons 7 and Seasons 8, and I used to go to sci-fi conventions in the late 1990s, I remember I accidentally backed into Frazer Hines from Doctor Who as a 16 year old and he goes "have you heard of Doctor Who?". I was so embarrassed. Very shy. Not much of a fan boy, but I have a lot of squee sort of friends. :)
    Ringo is underrated; Tomorrow Never Knows, A Hard Days Night and Eight Days A Week were all named by Ringo, even though underneath the wrapping they were Lennon/McCartney's. Starkey's a handle man. Also Ringo Rama, his 13th album from 2003, has a great song in the wake of 9/11 called "Instant Amnesia" which he wrote when he felt like giving up from all the stress and pressure of everything at that time. Worthy of Lennon. "Let it go. Let it go!"
    As for Shakespeare, and who he really is... that's like the Endless Enigma, to quote Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
    Love your work, God bless you! I may return to watch another one, but I think I'm going to head over to some Round the Twist, an Australian children's show in the 1990s whose author Paul Jennings inspired me to write fantasy fiction. He also lived in my home town, which really spoke to me, because he knew the more mystical side of the region. Ta!

    When I first watched this episode, the only problem I had was the Mpreg, but nothing else. Watching it back later, I agree, they were painting poorly and the doppelgangers aren't acting as they would if they are meant to be the same characters.

    "Our Rimmer is many things, but I'm pretty sure he's not a borderline rapist."
    Between taking advantage of Yvonne McGruder's head injury and his flippant use of the Sexual Magnetism virus, I would disagree, though I do agree he's not the sort to force himself on someone like the way female Rimmer did.

    • @The_Mighty_Fiction
      @The_Mighty_Fiction 2 роки тому +2

      One of the books (Last Human, I think) goes into more detail about the whole McGruder thing when Rimmer meets his son (long story). It's actually a small scale tragedy. I haven't read it in years so bear with me; McGruder checked herself out of the ship's infirmary after the winch incident insisting she was fine, bumped into Rimmer and they actually got along well. Very well. The problem was that when Rimmer told his bunkmate later, Lister gleefully informed him of McGruder's head injury and taunted him about it. Lister got into his head to the point where Rimmer decided to wait for her to approach him and when she didn't, he resigned himself to the fact that she'd actually blacked out the whole evening and would never have wanted anything to do with him if her brain hadn't been swollen.
      The _further_ problem was that McGruder had had a crush on Rimmer for the longest time but given that she may really have had a concussion, she wasn't entirely sure herself that the date had actually happened, so she in turn waited for _him_ to approach _her_ and when he didn't, she resigned herself to the fact that she'd dreamt the whole evening up out of wishful thinking.
      So there it is. Yvonne McGruder actually was crazy about Rimmer, may even have been the love of his life. And Lister screwed him out of it.

  • @MichaelBrookham

    I actually thought it was quite funny. I think I liked it better than Dena did. I liked how everything is just opposite and the men, in a sense, realize what they put the women through in their universe and they don't like it, either.
    They could have had the Cat's opposite be a female dog, since everyone else in that universe was female.
    A few things to note: While they are in the parallel universe, a shot is shown behind Rimmer's bed. It still says "Arnold Rimmer" on the certificate on the wall, instead of saying "Arlene Rimmer".
    Secondly, Parallel Universe is the only episode of Red Dwarf where the title is not given at the beginning -- at least I haven't seen it, and I own the DVD sets of series 1 - 8.

    TBH, I think Parallel Universe Listers conceiving a baby together and Dave leaving himself under the pool table would have been a better idea than Lister/Alt Universe Kochanski having a child together (through artificial insemination) in Ouroboros. In this way the DNA would be completely Lister, thus he would have "created himself". Hindsight is 20/20, I suppose.

    I'm not sure Norman Lovett left because he fell out with the crew he just couldn't make the shooting schedule because they changed location of where they filmed in season 3 and it was going to be too far for Norman to travel from where he lived. Having said that of all the cast he was a complete pain in the arse to work with so maybe he did fall out with them but I always understood it to be more about the inability (or unwillingness) to relocate to the new shooting location than about animosity.

    I know the show is a comedy...
    But I always found it strange that despite the fact that prior to Lister spending time in suspended animation, the show still took place in the future. But for some reason the gender roles and methods of entertainment were all still generally the same as they were in the 1980s.
    I'm just saying... we have a woman running for president right now! Are you telling me that in a hundred years or so we regress back to how gender roles were back in the late 1980s? lol

    Parallel universe is an interesting one to me where I liked some bits where it went but glad it looked at if things went another way and if it is played on the opposite ends.
    Tongue Tied is brilliant and I know Craig Charles totally hates this I remember watching some convention footage from 1995.
    The Worm do is a great chat up line. Holly hop drive is the greatest invention ever.
    The Cats opposite being a Dog is brilliant move from the writers. I love Hilly and glad Hattie took over Norman’s part after what happened.
    When I was 10 years old I totally got what the message was before I even understood messages, I know that is weird but I felt it at the time lol.
    The disco scenes are great and has a few funny scenes and I agree I was like what the fuck with the female rimmer.

    I will say that I was impressed with this episode having Lister say women are people and you should treat them like you would other men (I don’t remember exact phrasing)
    I feel like shows of the time would talk about treating women as equals, but there was always the implication of fundamental differences. While RD doesn’t always live up to that idea, this seems like a very sincere attempt to say something about societal attitudes and actions, rather than biological differences.

    I think this episode can easily be misread in this parallel universe they are female equivalents not Lister Rimmer ect in female bodies, its not exactly how Lister and Rimmer would actually behave otherwise they wouldn't find it so objectionable, its slightly exaggerated set of rules about how the opposite sex behaves in this universe, for comic effect, thats the way I view and read it anyway

  • @MasterWilliamFrazer
    @MasterWilliamFrazer 4 роки тому +1

    Parallel universe pregnancy theory/question:
    In Lister’s universe, males get females pregnant meaning that when his body was created in his universe, it was created to get females pregnant.
    When he traveled into the parallel universe they said that their physical law applies.
    But does that really mean that his body changed to their version of males...
    ...or does their physical law only apply to the people BORN IN THEIR UNIVERSE?!!!

    • @The_Mighty_Fiction
      @The_Mighty_Fiction 2 роки тому

      Well, I wondered if maybe both physical laws apply and _both_ Listers got pregnant. I mean, presumably Deb Lister saw the future echoes as well.

  • @djgamer5546
    @djgamer5546 8 років тому +1

    So did jumping to that alternate universe just radially change Lister's biology and did the pregnancy somehow prevent it from changing back right away when they returned to their own universe? That is literally the only explanation that makes sense and it's still quite a stretch.

    • @skinnyzachfilms
      @skinnyzachfilms 8 років тому +2

      +DJGamer Yeah, but it also has a man who evolved from one cat only over the course of 3 million years instead of 6 million (like most scientists agree is how long it took humans to evolve from apes). Plus, why would the cats ALSO evolve into a species that look exactly like humans AND speak english? Because it's a comedy, that's why. lol

    • @dennett316
      @dennett316 8 років тому +4

      +Skinny Zach Films The English thing is explained by the cats coming across tv shows and things on the ship...at least it is in the books. The human thing just seems to be the outlook of the creators. God doesn't exist in the Red Dwarf universe, neither do aliens, humans are it. They come across droids and GELFs (Genetically Engineered Life Forms), but they're all man made.

    • @Cyborcat
      @Cyborcat  8 років тому +4

      +Skinny Zach Films At least evolution is a thing that happens, and a lot about Cat's race can be somewhat explained by things like cats multiplying a LOT faster than humans (so mutations get passed on to new generations more quickly, so faster evolution), and they evolved in an environment specifically made for humans, where they'd have access to TV and such so they could learn the language. So Cat's evolution isn't THAT crazy, all things considered--I think it's as well explained as it needs to be for what is basically a sitcom set in space =P
      Whereas Lister's pregnancy just brings up all kinds of inconsistencies that they don't bother to address.

    • @skinnyzachfilms
      @skinnyzachfilms 8 років тому

      I know this is a old comment thread... but I felt I need to add that wouldn't cats need even MORE time then humans do to evolve? I mean, felines and canines have existed for millions of years and they ain't exactly all that different now then they were millions of years ago. Then again environments and all that. Plus like I said four months ago, comedy. lol

    • @toomanyaccounts
      @toomanyaccounts 7 років тому

      remember there was a massive radiation leak. even though the hold was sealed it is entirely possible radiation seeped through. not enough to kill the cats but increase the possibility of mutations but not enough to be catastrophic over time.

      It's the Star Wars type 'Story So Far' opening crawl at the beginning to explain the cast changes for season 3. Basically, the kids start to age rapidly so have to be taken back to the other universe before they crumble to dust. Meanwhile, Season 2 Kryten with the Downton Abbey accent rebels, takes off on a space-bike looking like David Ross and promptly crashes into an asteroid. Lister retrieves and rebuilds him best he can but Lister being Lister, he makes an absolute cockjob of it which is why Season 3 Kryten goes back to his default personality, develops a wandering accent and looks like Robert Llewellyn... if he were in a Peter Gabriel video. Oh, and Holly edits his avatar to resemble his female parallel.
