I've done a lot of looking into it, Yamaha's 700 line (MT-07/FZ-07, XSR700, R7) has gained a lot of traction as fantastic starter bikes with a decent amount of putdown so you don't get bored and not too much power to handle, especially in the top end. Will caution against the wheelie-happy nature of the XSR700, but the other three are definitely contenders.
My 2nd bike was a 89 shadow 1100 and I was gonna buy a rebel 1100 but realized with the help of this channel that naked bike is more my style ,so I'm about to hit 600 miles on my 2023 z900 and it's been great . 🏍️

Got a 2020 mt07 for my second bike, ditched my slow little pos for a decent price, couldnt be happier. Holy fuck do i love my bike. This channel heavily made me consider it as an option, none of the mid class naked bikes feel or sound like the mt07, no need to repeat what yammie and every other video says about how awesome it is for the price. Ergonomics so comfy to ride around the rocky mountain twisties for a few hours and plenty of down low useable power for the street thats plenty fast, absolutely love mine.
My first bike was a Yamaha FZ6R. 84hp, right in that middleweight range. Enough power to scare me the first few times I ripped the throttle but not too little power to really ever bore me.
Instead of the triumph for the naked retro, I would go with a Kawasaki z900rs cafee, easily the best looking and packed with all the modern goodies + the japanese reliability.
My second bike was a Daytona 675 and when I first took it for a test ride it felt ungodly fast taking that jump from a Ninja 250, but it was pretty easy to get used to it

I have a KTM 790 Duke 2021 as my 2nd bike. Got my first bike stolen yesterday from my apt. ( Honda cb500F) loved that bike and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good beginner bike. I put 3,000 miles on it. Now its time to get that insurance and get something bigger.
I started on a street triple RS. It was completely manageable and I never felt like it was too much power. I also grew up racing motocross so I already knew how to “ride” it and I have good throttle control. I think you have to be honest with yourself about your ability and your ability to ride smart.

If you’re a new and young rider and you’re looking to get insured just know it ain’t cheap, even before yammie started being sponsored by progressive, they were the best quote for me, and the full coverage on a 2019 Suzuki SV650x I picked up in April from the dealership brand new, cost me $2200 to get insured, as a 21 year old who just got his license.
@@ethanleno5259 it’s gunna be different for everyone. In CA where I live progressive was one of the more expensive ones even with discounts, but if I wanted full coverage they were a good option. As a driver with a permit and a 03 sv650 geico was the cheapest for me

@@lethalvenomx1095 I'm not sure honestly, I learned so much on the 400, I suppose you could ride around in Low power mode vs Full power, its just a toggle switch. In low power still more than the 400, it brings the motor to like 70-80% max power. Big difference too is the ride stance, you're leaned over and tucked more. On the 400 was more comfortable and upright and nimble. I'd feel uneasy learning on a new $10k bike it wasn't too bad mentally learning on a $5k bike. I mean if and when it gets damaged.
@@M82Predator thanks for the reply! i think i’m going to start on the zx6r and just do the low power mode and baby it for a little until i get more comfortable because i didn’t know it had a low power mode that’s really cool. also i won’t be buying it brand new so the price isn’t too worrysome for me
I agree with everything said about the sport bikes, but when a zx6r is about 20% cheaper locally than the rs660, it becomes a really tough sell. But really all I want is an rc790/890 🤤
And since it's Japanese, you could buy one with 5 years and 20k miles on it and it would still be more dependable than the Aprilia. Take all the money you save, buy some heli-bars and adjustable rearsets to make it just as comfy, then hit 3 or 4 track days and also go on a multi-day tour, and then maybe still have enough $ left to buy some new gear too.
I would recommend people not buy 'beginner bikes' buy a bike that is controllable but that you will still love to ride after you gain some skill. My first bike was a 955 speed triple, still have the bike 10 years later and still love it. You need to learn throttle control anyway you might as well learn on a real bike that you wont be replacing after a year of riding.
All bike are real if it involves paperwork and isn't imaginary. Had my bike for almost a year (2020 Ninja 400) and put 8k miles on it but haven't maximized it's potential on the track. Going straight is 1 thing. But taking corners is another.
@@sambeezy007 I live in Colorado and ride through the mountains all the time, I know all about taking corners. If you do much riding up here you will also realize that 300-500cc 'beginner bikes' wont cut it at 11000ft. Not disparaging smaller bikes, just saying don't buy a bike with intentions of moving up later, just buy the bike you want and learn to control it. If the 400 is the bike you wanted because you want a light bike for the twisties, that's cool. I just bought a smaller bike (Zero Fxs) and I love it. Have fun and ride safe.

Plenty of power for beginners , wheelies amazing , powerband is so good for torque . You can ride it for years and have just as much fun as the day you got it .
@@chronicspiros8825 either wait it out or try out a Triumph triple. I picked up a 2015 Striple for a steal and that’s the most ambitious “105 hp” I’ve ever ridden.
My first bike was a zx10RR from 2018, ik the black special paint job. The learners we had at my driving school in denmark were honda CB650R’s. Along with 26 driving lessons on the street and 26 theory lessons along with my age of 24 at purchase, meant i had no real issue mounting that bike. I could picture it being an issue if a 16 year old with no driving lessons mounted that beast as a first bike.
2nd bike can be a tricky choice. I had a Ninja 650. in terms of learning how to handle more power it was a natural progression from a Ninja 250, however, as fast as it felt at first, within a few months it felt blah. This isn't a problem if you have money to buy and sell bikes often, but if you're stuck financing it can feel depressing having a four year loan on something that gets boring after 6 months. but I know the ZX-6R would have been too big of a jump from a 250. If you're an aspiring squid, I would say start on something like the R7 or Ninja 650 as the FIRST bike (which I think could be a little daunting for a brand new rider, but doable) then get the 600 supersport as the second bike so you don't get stuck on a slow bike or get on a fast one too quickly. But knowing what I know now, if I had to hold onto my second bike for 3-4 years and was coming from a 250 or 400, I would say a Ducati Scrambler wouldn't be a bad second bike to get "stuck with". It's approachable power, easy to cruise on, but has enough get up and go to be exciting. Also the aesthetics and exhaust note give it more character than something like a Ninja 650 which feels like a sport touring dad bike trapped in a sportbike body after a while. Yeah, the 650 is not a bad looking bike and has reasonable power and handling, but there's something so generic and uninspiring about it too --the exhaust sounds like a blender. Thankfully my 650 was stolen and insurance paid off the loan :p
First Bike: 16’ FZ-07 Second Bike: 16’ Daytona 675R Third Bike: 21’ S1000RR I regret nothing and the jump from one to the other was an easy transition 👍
I got rid of my 2016 Yamaha fz07 and looking to upgrade! Preferably under 13k sport bike! Only other bike I rode is a 2014 r6 and I’m leaning towards one. Be occasional weekend toy and on a good day commute to work which is a 65 mile round trip.
Started on an Indian Scout Sixty, got a ZX6R a few weeks ago. Aside from the huge power jump, everything you said about having it as a second bike is too true. I love it, but I’m glad I kept my Indian. The ZX6R is the most uncomfortable thing in the world at stop lights or in heavy traffic lol
600 is all perspective from person to person on how it rides in the streets or low end, I'm enjoying both the low and high ends on my zx-6r sure it's annoying waiting for the red light to turn green to rip it, the heat baking up my crotch, and the seating position making me scoot right up the tank to be able to sit up but sure as hell keeps a grin on my face throughout the whole ride
I agree about perspective on the powerband of a 600. I really enjoy the Jeckle and Hyde nature of those engines. Really easy to ride them smooth at lower RPM's and so fun to make them scream up top. It's kinda like having infinitely variable power modes depending on where in the rev range you choose to ride. 'Gutless under 10k' is as much a feature as a bug. If you want the guts, be in the right gear.
@@kleinbottled79 Gutless below 10k is a blatant lie on the 636. Just for a laugh, compare the power dynos for a RS660 and a 636. They are near as makes no difference identical up to about 10k where the RS peaks. The 636 keeps on pulling till about 14k. 100% agree that having a bike with a "dual personality" is more of a perk than a drawback. So docile and easy at low revs. Sure a MT09 or KTM 890 will pop wheelies with a lot more ease but hey, 636 leaves them for dead in terms of sheer performance.
@@Stratocasterhead51 Comparing dyno charts can be very telling. I've noticed that trend before. If a bike has a top end rush it makes the mid-range/low-end 'feel' weak in comparison. Then some reviewer is telling you how gutless-down-low a z900 is verses an Mt-09; until you look at the dyno charts and see it's an illusion.

Having problems choosing between the Honda rebel 1100 and a xsr 700 for a second bike. Started on svartpilen 401 so the xsr feels natural but the cruise control and extra stability on the Honda seem really tempting for the highway. I don't really enjoyed riding a naked bike on the highway for more than a couple exits
Try the Honda out. Maybe it will put you down the cruiser path. Or maybe it wont! You wont know until you dip a toe in. I went from a cbr500r to a versys 650 LT outta nowhere and i couldn’t be happier. Going the ADV path now 100%. I never would have expected that 🤷♂️
I have a Suzuki GZ250, and I found this beautiful example of a Suzuki Marauder 800 for not too much more. If the GZ250 was a first form pokemon, the Marauder 800 would be its evolution (and the Boulevard C90 would be the final form). It's so incredibly tempting but I don't have the money for it. I think my 2nd motorcycle will be a middleweight metric cruiser because of how cheap and plentiful they are in my area.
My first was FZ07, my second - 2022 Street triple 765. I would have suggested a couple more naked for second bike, definitely over cruisers and Harleys...
First bike: Ninja 300. Commuting almost daily for two years and a 5000km trip through Europe! Zero accidents. Good bike, but realized I love touring, which it's not made for. Wanted an ADV bike like Triumph Tiger 800 or KTM 790 Adventure. However, they be expensive as f*ck. Bought a Honda VFR 800 with VTEC as a second bike because V4 and VTEC, for cheap, nuff said. I love it, but she's a thirsty little lass. Kinda like the daughter you love but you wish didn't spend all her money on alcohol and parties every weekend. In addition, it's a pain in the butt to service the brakes and valves to mention some of it. Good bike though. Made me cry of happiness the first time I rolled the throttle and suddenly felt that VTEC kick in brutally. However, once my financial situation is more robust, I'm probably gonna trade her in for some juicy Multistrada or something.
I started on a BMW F800GT, a sport touring bike with more than enough power for me, but also very easy to ride. For my second bike, still in the sport touring category, I'm looking at either: Kawasaki Ninja 1000 SX, Kawasaki Versys 1000, or Yamaha Tracer 9 GT.
First bike is a KTM Duke II 640. Love it to bits but it's a bit intense for the kind of riding I do. (usually 100+ miles at once, in a group where the pace is not too high.) Everyone's having a great time and I keep on changing gear to somewhat dampen the vibrations. It's a fantastic bike, but I didn't expect to go on trips this long when I started out. Did around 3500 km this season. Really trying to figure out what should be my next bike. I did try a Royal Enfield Interceptor, which would theoretically suit my driving style a lot better, but I found it a bit underwhelming. I do like retro looking bikes, I was thinking Triumph Street Triple but I think the bump in power is a bit too much. Would be fun to read some suggestions here!
Hadn't ridden in 12 years and bought the z900 off the floor. Now I'm wanting a 636 and keep remembering that the 0-60 times are near the same as is the quarter mile so.... I think I just want clip-ons again lol

Will caution against the wheelie-happy nature of the XSR700, but the other three are definitely contenders.
Definitely wouldn’t say they’re starter bikes.
@@Motoplugg they are. On the bleeding edge of what's acceptable as a starter bike, but you certainly can start on them.
I did. And rippin my xsr. It's perfect for starter bike
My 2nd bike was a 89 shadow 1100 and I was gonna buy a rebel 1100 but realized with the help of this channel that naked bike is more my style ,so I'm about to hit 600 miles on my 2023 z900 and it's been great . 🏍️
First one was a Kawi vulcan 650 Cafe
Second one is a 2006 Victory Hammer 1634, loads of power and fun
I started with a Kawa Z125 for a year, and then drove a brand new Indian scout bobber twenty off the lot and I couldn’t be happier. Don’t pay $2K more for a hd logo, my scout bobber is a dream to drive
True. Indian's offer so much more, and they cost less.
I got my new ninja 500 a month ago.. traded it in today for a ninja 650. I rode my friends and it was just as relaxed in seat position but it was better on freeway.
Just get whatever you want for your first bike. Selling starter bikes is hard unless you started on a dual sport. Because that's a good idea.
Instead of the triumph for the naked retro, I would go with a Kawasaki z900rs cafee, easily the best looking and packed with all the modern goodies + the japanese reliability.
That's the bike I want as a 2nd bike without having a first one yet
My second bike was a Daytona 675 and when I first took it for a test ride it felt ungodly fast taking that jump from a Ninja 250, but it was pretty easy to get used to it
They're great bikes, my first and current bike is the 2013 street triple 675
@@Sarberos909 Looking to get a Street Triple S as my first bike (A2 license limited to 45hp), do you think is too much bike to start? I want something I can ride too when I get A license (no limit in hp)
Same for me! First bike was an r3 and going from that to a 675r was such a big jump in a good way!
1st bike. 08 zx6r. i couldn’t handle the torque and crashed. But now I love it.
I have a KTM 790 Duke 2021 as my 2nd bike. Love it so much, I know Yammie said he was worried about the fact that it was made in China but I now have 10,000km on the bike and not a single problem has happened, still rides as perfect as when it was brand new. I do however follow all maintenance suggestions in the manual and give my bike all the care I can. Dont overlook the bike just because the manufacture location changed
Ktm made in India anit they?
I thought they were made in India also
Triumph Speed Twin 😍. A classic yam top 10 list that contains 15+ bikes!
Couple months and just under 3,000 miles in with my first bike a 2020 CB650R and honestly it can be a handful for a new rider with a couple tasteful mods pushing it just over 100hp but such a smooth fun bike won’t be looking at upgrading for quite some time but I love checking out these lists!!
Started on a gsxr 600. It’s about how you ride. You only god as fast as you pull the throttle.
First bike was an r6, sold that, got an 07 cbr600rr and I’m in love, my third bike’s gonna be probably a cruiser or a cafe racer. I don’t think I’ll ever “upgrade” from a beast of a bike like the 07 cbr600rr
I just got myself a new striple RS after just 1000kms on duke 390. I agree it is totally manageable and joy to ride.
First bike- 2003 ZX6R,
second- 93 Kawasaki ex500,
third -2014 Honda CTX700,
fourth- 2006 Yamaha FJR1300a ABS.
I did ride my brother’s Buell ZB9R. I realized I needed something more comfortable with some “sportiness” to it…. The FJR1300 is it .. 145hp(crank) and 99lbs/ft(crank).. It doesn’t hesitate.. Have to love the Torque. LOL 🏍
My first bike is a GSXF 650. Didn't do too much research on it before I got It because the price was right. Haven't looked back, its been such an amazing bike to learn on so far. A little heavy sometimes but otherwise just a whole lotta fun.
I'm still having fun and learning on my Duke 390. Finally got the ergo seat recently. My backside is so much happier now on longer rides!
makes you wonder if they make the seat shit in the first place to make you buy the ergo one, huh?
source: also have a ergo seat equipped duke 390
How's the seating position on longer rides? Been looking at getting one but my ride to work is an hour.
Started on mt03 couple months ago. I'm thinking mt07 for my second bike. As long as this one does me good. I'm really enjoying it so far.
Same but I’m tossing up between r1m and a mt09 or the 07
I went from a KZ1000P to a ZZR 1200, a bit of a jump but I've been doing okay. It helps being a thicker boy
I am at my third bike now. Started on a 125 Aprilia then had a 650 2018 ninja now I ride a S1000r from 2019. I will get a pani v4s 2022 this November as my new daily. 🙏🏻
How was the ninja?
@@MrKekej the ninja was ok. Looking back not to exciting but I had a ton of fun riding it. I kept it for two years and made 22000 km (it was my daily vehicle)
What 2000-2010 r class bike would you reccomend thats reliable and 4 cyl
First bike here in the UK
2015 Suzuki gsxr 750
Absolutely love how much everybody says not to get one… :)
2021 Ducati Monster Plus...because that's what I just got as my next bike after my KTM Duke 390 :P
Great choice. They should get a monster as the next intermediate give away.
Suicide squad assemble!
Started on an xr650l and upgraded for highway use to a gsxr 750 and I still have them both and love everything about them
My 1st bike was a Yamaha FZR 400. I rode the hell out of it and now I'm moving up to a 2011 Ducati 848 EVO.
I'm getting cbr650r as my first bike, it's comfy for city riding and even has a good passenger seat. Can do twisties and has enough power to keep you happy for a long time. Sure I don't have the experience but if you are responsible and don't go crazy you can learn on it.... or die trying.
This video basically confirmed what I'm wanting to do. Starting on an MT-07 or SV650 then moving on to the Duke 890R
I’m already thinking of getting my second motorcycle (got a honda rebel 500)… looking at the Indian Scouts and the Honda rebel 1100 xD regardless of what I end up with, I can’t wait!
I just bought my first bike! 2021 CBR 300R...lol. Not fast, but I'm having a lot of fun riding it around town.
If you’re a new and young rider and you’re looking to get insured just know it ain’t cheap, even before yammie started being sponsored by progressive, they were the best quote for me, and the full coverage on a 2019 Suzuki SV650x I picked up in April from the dealership brand new, cost me $2200 to get insured, as a 21 year old who just got his license.
thank you for commenting this. it’s the one thing i don’t know how much will cost for me
@@ethanleno5259 it’s gunna be different for everyone. In CA where I live progressive was one of the more expensive ones even with discounts, but if I wanted full coverage they were a good option. As a driver with a permit and a 03 sv650 geico was the cheapest for me
So so happy going from my 2020 Ninja 400 to my new 2021 ZX6R, amazing amazing! Been over s month now and close to 1k miles.
would you say that the zx6r would a be an ok bike to start on? i’m going to get a motorcycle next summer for the first time and i was thinking of just starting on a zx6r of course i would baby it in the beginning though
@@M82Predator thanks for the reply! i think i’m going to start on the zx6r and just do the low power mode and baby it for a little until i get more comfortable because i didn’t know it had a low power mode that’s really cool. also i won’t be buying it brand new so the price isn’t too worrysome for me
Got my first bike and it's a ninja 650 abs, so far I am pretty happy with it 😊
Nice vid !
The four-cylinder choices are tight.
My first bike is a 2016 ninja 650 and it’s been amazing so far
My second bike is an Aprilia RSV4 1100 Factory - I love it to bits
Finally, after 1,5 year of preparation "on paper", around month ago, i've got myself KTM RC125 (license stuff). Its enough for the start. Then i want to go for R3 and then R7. More than enough for my needs.
Thanks papa Yam for all the preparation vids ;)
Go straight for the R7.
@@musguelha14 I cant. 125 i can drive with my car license. And they are putting law that after 5 years on 125 i can go for R3 without any license. And for R7 i would need full license now and I really really dont want to go on full courses with all the exams again. Its Europe, its complicated...
But yeah, in US i would go for R7 like today.
I had a Honda CB125R. Moved to a BMW F900R, sold that. My Ducati SFV4S is coming next month
43 done had 2 R6s had a zx10r, & a gsxr 600. Time for an R1. Never owned 1. But I'm about to
My first bike is a Bajaj Pulsar ns200. I'm looking to change it for a zxr 250 from 1999, the one with 4 cylinders. I'm going from 24hp to 45hp and 19k rpm of pure goodness!
Getting a Vitpilen 401 as my first in a few months and eyeing the R7 as a second bike mainly for track day fun once I've got some experience under the belt
I’ve got an FZ07 and I’ve had it for about 2 months and I already want the triple FZ09 😂
Do it . Mt09 is the best
@@zaneklein8748 it’s so hard to find a fz09 near me. Everyone is selling their 07’s instead. Which is funny because when I bought mine everyone was selling 09’s
@@chronicspiros8825 hahaha. Just wait till the end of the riding season there will be people lookin to sell . But until then enjoy the mt07 and learn to use all the power it has before getting the mt09 . Mt07 is a blast and just as good as the mt09 in every way except it actually keeps the front wheel on the ground 😂. Good choice the mt07 is the best first bike you can buy in my opinion. Plenty of power for beginners , wheelies amazing , powerband is so good for torque . You can ride it for years and have just as much fun as the day you got it .
I bought a xsr900 as my first street bike ( 10 years of dirt bike exp) and I couldn't be happier 🙃
Yammie !!! Awesome segway into the Progressive ad. Had me captivated all the way!
I already decided what my second bike is going to be after my CTX 700.
GOLD WING
First Bike: 16’ FZ-07
Second Bike: 16’ Daytona 675R
Third Bike: 21’ S1000RR
I regret nothing and the jump from one to the other was an easy transition 👍
Your third bike is going to be my next one. Currently on a R Nine T /5
Bro! I started on a cbr 500 and I want a Daytona 675r SO bad! Please tell me what you thought of the bike!!
Just got my first bike a month ago and here I am looking for my next already. I swear I’m not an addict
My first bike is a 1994 Aprilia Red Rose Classic. For my next bike,I plan to buy a 1997 or newer Kawasaki Vulcan EN500,as soon as I can afford it.
Happy to see the MT-07 on here i absolutely love this bike foe my first ride
I want the R7 so bad. I'm loving the R3 so far though.

Ok my dude, I have a question for you, my current staple includes:
2012 monster 1100EVO
2006 1098
2003 Harley vrod
2021 Harley PanAm
What would you say should be my next bike?
H2r
Thanks yammy just bought my first quad turbod busa can’t wait to whiskey throttle my way into heaven yeehaw 🤠
1) XSR900
2) Triumph Speed Triple
3) MV Agusta Brutale 800
4) …um…XSR900…?
Got myself a 701 SUPERMOTO today boys! Thanks Yam
I still enjoy my z900 but going from 25hp to 125hp was not something I'd recommend for most people, lmao. Thank god for rain mode
Hadn't ridden in 12 years and bought the z900 off the floor. Now I'm wanting a 636 and keep remembering that the 0-60 times are near the same as is the quarter mile so.... I think I just want clip-ons again lol
Amen to that.....
Went from a 2018 z650 a year ago and just got a new 2020 street triple rs a week ago!
Coming from a Ninja 650, I’m actually torn between a zx6r or a street triple as a second bike. Love that Triumph triple sound🤤
Heres me going from a CB650R to a BMW S1000R in the next few days haha Wish me luck lol
Im drooling over the new Honda Forza 330 maxi scooter. I might get the scooter adv for offroading.
