Told him so, he was surprised since I was on a new Harley, any idiot with $$ can buy a new Harley, I ride with dozens of them. How many Honda Pacific Coasts you see? How many know what it is? All motorcycles, except turbo Busa's, are cool. I have owned a few, Still own a Honda C70, KTM and a Harley, all are cool and all are fun. Ridden that Shadow, rebuilt the forks on one for a friend, cool bike.
Same except mine is a 2003Honda shadow ace 750.
What I want to know before starting to ride is, if you get pulled over on your motorcycle and the officer asks you, “do you know why i pulled you over?” If you answer “because I wasn’t wearing my seatbelt sir?” Can you some how incriminate yourself?
You'd probably get a chuckle as they start writing up your speeding ticket. Of course I wear my seatbelt when I ride (have a Helite airbag) so I guess I wouldn't know though
My last speeding ticket was on my bike, my excuse was “I was just overtaking officer” he jus straight up said “YEAH RIGHT, FOR 4 MILES?!” with a laugh.

If they ask you that, they aren’t sure they have enough to prove what they think you did. So just say no, do you?
When I took my MSF course, we had a kid who had no business on a bike in the course. He never grasped the concept of the clutch, had his feet down the entire time etc etc.
After we took the riding test (which he passed but shouldn’t have) he asked the instructor if he could sit on his bike to take a pic. The kid decided to rev the bike to look cool, put it in 1st somehow and ended up crashing the bike into a 20 ft container.
I recommend everyone take an MSF course. 👍🏽
We had a similar guy in the MSF course I took. Dude was nervous and scared. I had to ride behind him during the course and hated every moment because you never knew what he was doing or going to do next. His nervousness made him very unpredictable. He didn’t have an accident but even the instructor said he wasn’t the type that should’ve been on a bike.
As European I am always so confused about the msf course tip.
It took me months lots of hours and three exams to get a motor cycle license.
America be like, we recommend you learn how to drive.

The person on the motorcycle is the one at risk, not the one in the safety box, which is most people.

MSF, as explained to me: They will teach you how to work the controls of a bike, and how to stay alive long enough to learn how to ride.
While charging you an ungodly amount of money over several days that you'll never get back

@@chrisroberson7156 new 60 percenter here when I started..learned a pile watching. And in fact this channel was a major motivation for me to take my Ninja 400 to the track in September five months after getting my license.
I grew up on motorcycles but took the MSF anyways, still learned a bunch, and aced the test. Had several people in my class that had never ridden and they did fabulous at the end if the class! Depends on the instructors I guess...
I had 25 years of experience before I ever took a MSF class. I had no idea how many bad habits I had. Since then, I have become a RiderCoach and have been teaching MSF classes for close to 20 years!
Yeah I had some bikes but I was no expert and when I went into the army and owned a bike the msf course is mandatory and I learned a lot of things and very glad I took it. I saw someone who had never sat on a bike before and they did great showing that person.
Took an MSF course and it taught me a lot as a first time rider ! Instructors were short tempered due to standing outside in the heat all day lol
The MSF is like truck driving school. Teaches basic skills to pass a test
I went to a private trucking school and took the MSF course. You're dead nuts on.
I did the same. 2003 for the trucking school. 2021 for the MSF
UA-cam is so wonderful making motorcycling available for everyone when I was young you had to count on your crazy drunk biker uncle to teach you on his 1948 Harley with drum brakes and a jockey shifter
Here are my personal tips that helped me pass with flying colors:
1. Research the material,
Not just the msf book but the mechanics of bike riding and posture help to paint a coherent picture of what it'll be like.
2. Ride a bicycle,
it may sound silly but the days leading up to my course I was on my pedal bike constantly cornering and exaggerating body position to mimic a motorcycle that's much bigger.
3.If you have a bike then static practice,
If you're fortunate enough to have a bike in your stable already before the course then really FEEL the bike don't just stare at it and think about after the test, really get on it and press all the buttons get them down as being familiar with you because the msf bikes (however broken down) will have the same positions.
4. finally most importantly ask questions,
Its no good to be egocentric when hearing them say the practice course you need to ask independent questions that go beyond the scope of what they said.

First bike was/ still is a K1 GSXR-750 absolutely love her and everyone made it seem like instant death the moment you hop on anything bigger than a 400 for a beginner, I found the power pretty easily controllable, then again I’ve never even opened the throttle all the way open I’m pretty sure, and Shes definitely had her fair share of reminding me she can kill me in a moment😂
I not only look back at my SV650, I literally go buy a pizza and eating it in the garage while looking at my bike 😍😁
I know about this. I park my Kawasaki Z 900 RS in just the right spot so I can see it from the balcony. If I had a SV 650 I'd stare at it, too. Good lookin' bike.

I hadn't ridden for a decade or so before buying my second (and current) bike. I started watching Yammie Noob and Fortnine before deciding on my Rebel 300. I am still considering buying a new bike in a year or so, but am glad I didn't start back up on something larger. Even when I do move up, I plan on keeping the Rebel for around town. It is the most fun I have had on two wheels since my BMX trail riding as a kid.
You are the reason I started riding. Always loved motorbikes but never really had the courage to spend the money on one. Theeeen, UA-cam sugested your videos and I changed my mind. So I got my A2 license a year ago, bought a Honda Shadow Spirit 750, and now, being european, I am going to get my A license and get maybe a Xsr 900. Love your content!
I have my CBT on the 30th and I'm equal parts excited and terrified. I've had a few lessons, but watching beginner rider videos will always be fun

Nice tips - MSF courses are the BEST way to get on the road safely or relearn what you should be doing. They'll also tell you it's JUST the beginning of what you need to know.

These videos have been perfect for me. Just got my motorcycles endorsement after contemplating for years and I’m taking my MSF course next month. I subscribed right at 999 before you hit one mill and have been binge watching your content. Thank you for all the beginner videos. They really help 😁
Honestly, if you already have your endorsement and are enough into motorcycles to watch content online, you can almost certainly get away with skipping the beginner MSF. You'll get just as much or more out of watching and practicing parking lot drills from DanDanTheFireman (and Motojitsu for more advanced techniques not even covered in the beginner course.)
The intro course has a bunch of classroom stuff your already know from getting your endorsement, and like Yam said, you never even get above 20ish mph. Save your money for a more advanced course with things you can't easily learn with UA-cam and an empty parking lot.
(That's just my experience, at least. Talking about motorcycles with other excited people for a weekend was cool, but I didn't learn anything new that I hadn't already studied for/watched/practiced in a parking lot already.)
Edit: To clarify, I do think the course is good for people who are brand new and basically walk in off the street, or who need it to get their endorsement or insurance, but you sound like you likely don't fit in that category.)

@@jaredcherry4049 Gotcha. Yeah, insurance is a very valid reason. ALSO, I did not realize you didn't have a bike yet, ha. My advice was assuming the only thing between you and riding your bike was waiting to take the MSF course. Sounds like it'll be very good for you.
For those considering skipping, definitely research what you need to learn. In my case, I already had my bike and have been practicing all the drills from the previously mentioned people a lot, so when I got there it was basically just like sitting through a class I had already taken plus a practice session.

I Bought my first bike the 28th December TSR 250 and thanks to all your videos ive been binge watching i have learnt more to ride a bike and built up my confidence to ride around the streets and long distances than what i thought i would have before ever owning one. really awesome videos and a way to help new people climb on a motorcycle

Made 41 and bought a Honda PCX after getting the "nerv" (balls) to do it after watching many of these videos... besides the obvious entertainment aspect, they are truly public service!
Right now I' ve almost 600Kms and having a blast (and I like to think, always on the safe side... and yes lane splitting is a life changer in big city ;)).

Based on your good advice I'm picking up a Fireblade as my 1st bike. You said it handles well and wont launch so it should be safe for someone with no experience on a performance bike. I'll probably put on a new muffler like yours because loud pipes saves lives.

The initial investment is expensive, yes. In the long run there's no doubt it costs less than a car.
@@killernanny4315 It actually depends on the bike, the car you're comparing it to, and where the bike will be ridden. So for instance, if you commute on a Panigale V4 through a British winter, the ownership costs incurred by the bike are likely to be significantly higher than running a Toyota Yaris e.g. Conversely if you commute on a CB500X in California your bike ownership will be a lot cheaper than if your car is a Lamborghini.
I bought a used gs500f and was so excited I didn’t even look at all the flaws. Tires are in rough shape, small oil leak, smokes at the front sometime, forks are leaking, and the throttle and clutch were so loose if I was at a stop sighn I’d dump it every time because it’d either get too much or not enough but thankfully I fixed that lol
I had to go back through the MSF with 20+ years of riding under my belt. Massive DOT screw up. I found many things in the MSF that didn't make sense. This crap of stopping with both feet down being number one. No wonder all the emphasis on low seats these days. One foot down stopping is the secret sauce to riding any bike in stop and go smoothly. For those tall off rad bikes its a must do.
looking over your shoulder when you park your vehicle to admire it is a hugeeeeeeeee sign that you chose the right one. Still do it to this stay lol
2:19 I took the msf and hoped straight on the road once I got my bike a couple weeks later. Obviously I know all the traffic laws and felt totally fine in traffic or at highway speeds considering I have it all the beans the second I was able to. 30mph doesn’t even feel fast or dangerous in any sort of way.

The msf isn't everything but it can still be helpful for sure. The fast braking training saved my life 3 days into my permit when someone cut my newb ass off and I went into the back of a semi. I would've hit them at 55 but I only hit them at 25 (they where stopped) because of the training. After like the first few weeks tho the msf is basically useless
That and the quick swerving helped me a lot.

I live in the UK since 2015 but back in my country (in Hungary) i did it in 2018 my full license for bike and in Hungary first we have to take 12 hrs on a similar as the MSF, after we can go for the "exam" and if we pass it than we can go into the city where we have to take an additional 20 hrs of riding and again the exam in the traffic. And if we pass it we're done and getting the license.

I learned how to ride as a Kid and Teen. I was racing Moto-X where you take your falls on dirt. You learn how to control and learn your bike.. Not as a Adult!

I bought a new Ducati Monster in 2016. I was 40. It was a dream bike since I was 18. To this day after I park it in the garage I look at it and giggle. It's so bonkers. It makes me laugh it's still so fun. I've had many bikes over the years. It's the only one that has done that.

Though all your 10 tips are good, I would like to echo the sentiments WRT one's first bike. I like the pointer to buy used. Why? First of all, you won't keep your first bike! Secondly, you'll need to ride 3-4 bikes to figure out what kind of riding you like. Third, you'll drop it. Finally, when buying new, you'll take the hit on depreciation. I didn't buy a new bike until my most recent one, and that's because I plan on keeping it forever; depreciation won't matter.

As a general guideline to get you on the road safely. The MSF is WONDERFUL. It's not everything. It also depends on the instructor. I had a fantastic instructor, and he wasn't even the best instructor there. He'd tell you the old motorcycle cop is. Knowing the cop myself, I know it's true.

I started riding at 41 after I retired. Bought a Honda CRF 230l for my first bike. Took the MSF and advanced course. Been through about 9 bikes (still have 3). Better to "outgrow" a bike, than buy one that you can't handle. If you buy too much bike, chances are you will quit before you get started. Dealers are filled with low mileage "big boy" bikes. Go to any Harley dealer you will see 4 and 5 year old bikes with less than a 1,000 miles on them. I ride Harley's along with other bikes now, sure wasn't stupid enough to start on a M8 107 or a KTM 450EXC. After I had enough miles under my belt, then I was stupid enough to overpay for a Harley.

I'm 49, have my permit and may take the MSF(STARS in Idaho) course when it warms up.
Maybe a list of bikes you would not suggest for a younger rider but would for someone older to grow into. I've heard that come up at times during bike reviews.
I don't care about popping mad nooners or thinning my chicken strips.
Alot of people need them courses but some of us don't need them at all because it just comes natural to us as well as driving and operating any vehicle especially 1 with a clutch. I learned many years ago on a small bike my dad had and then hit the roads a few times on my brothers gsxr 600 which was very fast and now I've my own. It came natural to me like driving a stick from the get go but I've been driving things all my life and it's what i do.

Tips one and two are a bit mind-blowing to me since I was brought to a highway a couple of times by my instructors for me to be able to even get a license to ride a bike. It seems stupid easy to get a license in America. lol
It was definitely easier than getting my driver's license. That being said, a few people did not pass the physical driving test. You really should be comfortable on a bicycle before attempting to ride a motorcycle.
I brought a 19 suzuki gsx-s750 abs for my first bike and i haven't regret
took my MSF crashed on my first actual ride but i will eventually get back on two wheels
Got my heart set on a cruiser class. Low seat and ergonomics are best suited to my fibromyalgia and since UK law will limit me to a 125 max, I at least have that aspect sorted for me. And my budget says buy used 😂

I decided to go in hard and fast, S1000RR for my first bike and 1600 miles later I’m still alive, still loving it and absolutely no regrets! I just want to tell unfamiliar riders that despite Yam's mockery, the Versys is a fun bike! I'm not saying he would love it, but-dad bike or not-if he were to ride one he'd see they're at least a bit more exciting than he says, particularly in the twisties!* He's definitely correct that the engine doesn't sound inspiring (_especially_ with the stock can) but it is peppy and fun, and quite torquey for a 650.
*I should clarify that I do think that the current generation looks a bit generic and more sport-tour-y, so I'm speaking mainly about the pre-2015s, which are more minimalist--like a taller ER-6N/naked Ninja.)
Yeah despite the smack talking when you side-by-side it with the V Strom 650 The 2 are pretty much neck and neck, Yeah the V Strom wins out over all but not by alot.
@@mrspeigle1 For sure! I haven't personally ridden a V-Strom, but they seem very very similar. I remember seeing a shootout from the first-gen Versys where they said the Kawasaki was a little more "fun" feeling, though. Who would I be to call Ari Henning wrong? 😆 (Side note, I'd bet money that Yam would enjoy one more than the average Harley...though it might be challenging to admit, lol.)
