Which Futurama Series Finale is BEST? (SO FAR, apparently)

- Опубліковано 27 чер 2024
- Ya know, the recent series finale of 2020 got me thinking about series finales. More specifically, Futurama’s series finale, EVEN MORE SPECIFICALLY, the fact that Futurama had FOUR SERIES FINALES. One of the strange byproducts of Futurama’s on-again off-again relationship to our television screens was that the writing staff could never be certain if any given season would be the last. Fortunately the writers stayed on their toes, since they did NOT want Futurama to end with a fizzle, and always sought to give the series some sense of closure when a production cycle would end, just in case. And this vigilance is why Futurama actually had FOUR different episodes that were written and produced as possible series finales. That’s right, FOUR SERIES FINALES. Today, let’s talk about all of Futurama’s series finales and determine which one is the most effective Futurama series finale.

You neglected to mention the best part of the final series finale:
When they initially aired it, the pilot episode played right after.
O H M Y G O D
that’s actually amazing
hell, everytime i see the final finale, the pilot is right after

@@sillygooselol2757 right? It's awesome
that's actually extremely common for TV shows to do. It just happens to work perfectly in this case.
most shows have trouble giving us one satisfying series finally. futurama did it 4 times.
Five if you consider the fact that sting was originally written to be the finale, but fox gave them a 7 episode extension
Seriously they delivered so hard wow
Mostly because they were afraid of getting canceled and screwed over. It's kind of like how American Dad was originally supposed to end with that murderous hot tub musical episode, but when FOX renewed the show, it was turned into a non-canon episode (similar to those James Bond parodies they did). I guess you can also count that episode where Kim Kardashian played a furry alien and the whole episode turned out to be Stan reading a book about the entire FOX run of American Dad to his family as a final episode, but only if you preferred the FOX episodes of American Dad to the TBS ones.
Game of thrones: gosh, ending a show in a satisfying way sure is hard…
Futurama: hold my beer x4
I wish marriedwithchildren had as many series finales, as Futurama
Actually, the ending of "Meanwhile" is more than just HINTING at rewinding. Every time the episode airs, "Space Pilot 3000" airs right after -- and Comedy Central often removes the credits and has the opening scene of the first episode start right after Farnsworth presses the button.
I watched the series finale live when it first aired on CC and when they did that, my friends and I all thought it was extremely poetic. It made me wish that they would keep going through the entire series back to that same point again.
Damn good job
That's actually incredible. Props to whoever organized that.
Syfy dose that also
"Wanna go round again?"
"Okay."

I didn’t even realize overclocked was supposed to be a series finale when watching the whole show for the first time recently
Same, it kinda felt just like a normal episode.
i've watched the series several times and didnt realize it was supposed to be a finale either so take that how you will
Felt that way with the first ending
Same. The others had some finale type trends to them, but to me this one didn’t. I guess because by the time I saw it the series had already been renewed again but still...
I never realised it was supposed to be a finale either.
I loved the fact that when "Meanwhile" debuted as an episode that when it ended Comedy Central played the First Episode following that finale. Like wow. What a perfect send off and a perfect way to restart it all.
IVE WATCHED THIS SERIES 7 TIMES NOW AND I NEVER MADE THE CONNECTION OF THE WATERFALL FAMILY OH MY GOD
Welcome to the Elite Futurama Fan Club. He’s your golden membership card and your pass to tell anyone to kiss your shiny metal ass.
Really? Huh, tho tbh I didn't get it at first either
From the last movie I got 3 of them but I didn't know the "vegan" guy, and the penguin protector were part of the family
This is my first time realizing that the Enclyclo-pod even says, "Waterfall". Brilliant.
Then you didn't pay attention 7 times xD
Plot twist: all of them are good in their own way.
I like how not even the final finale is a "complete" resolution. It's not the classic ending where they just close every thread and shows you how the characters' lives will go. Instead, they gave a conclussion to the most important relationship in the show, but ends in a way that makes you feel like the show just went on.
I feel like Johnny made this video just so then he could express his love for Ken Keeler.
THE LEGEND
We should all have a new found love of Double Kay!
Ken Keeler was the best writer. He's not wrong.
Totally deserved tho
The best series finale IMO is the last one because it’s not a series finale, it’s a beginning. A beginning for everyone to go back and enjoy. It’s my favorite because it’s the start of the show, not the end.
WHAT.
@@jacobarmstrong5308 they left it open ended in a clever way by saying "you can go back and relive your life" and fry says to leela: "want to go around one more time?" and that invites u to watch the whole series again. and its especially good when he says "one more time" and you've watched the series more than once.
@@Cake-Goku CC did you one better: when the finale first aired, they went straight into episode 1.
I love it from the perspective of literature, what it says about the "when" of stories. On the other hand, time-loops give me existential discomfort! Like, I guess it's ok if the characters are fine with it, but...
@@pokedude720 That moment made me shed a couple tears because it meant that Futurama never truly ends and doesn't need anything else.
In regards to the Professor in Meanwhile, he took them back to before he created the time button so that he could stop himself from creating it and prevent time from being broken again. This means Fry wouldn’t use it to get a super wedding ring and mess up his watch leading to his suicide attempt; he would instead get a smaller ring (possibly stolen for him by Bender as his wedding gift to them) and the wedding would go as planned, unfrozen.
So they won’t be stuck in an infinite loop and he won’t be an idiot.
The dialogue says nothing about the professor stopping himself from creating it, only that time would rewind to the instant before he thought of the time button.
So it would still be an infinite loop because he would think of it again.
@@devinalario9987 It’s implied and it would make sense he’d want to stop himself from creating it so that time wouldn’t get broken over and over again.

'The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings' had a much more bittersweet and uncertain ending than episode 'Meanwhile'. I have nostalgic feelings watching it because at the time we thought that was the series finally for a while. Also the music from Fry's holophonor at the very end was moving. 'Meanwhile' ultimately though is the ending we all needed, it had more closure.
one thing i love about meanwhile is fry and leela deciding to do it all over again is presented very similarly to a wedding, just like how they started things when time first stopped. leela even says 'i do' followed by a kiss- its just perfect!
What I love about “Meanwhile” is that it makes me wanna start watching the show all over again. Most series finales I watched made me sad in terms of that a show I invested a lot of time and emotion in came to an (satisfying) end. But I get over and I might go on and watch it again every few years or so. When Futurama ends, I eventually find myself starting again with Season 1 right after “Meanwhile” and that's probably a trait only Futurama has. ❤️
"Meanwhile" has the built in excuse to start the series over from Ep 1 ad nauseum. So that's gets my "Best" vote for series finale. But I'm a bigger fan of the Fox run of episodes than I am the Comedy Central run, so Devil's Hands gets a nod. Plus I love seeing how disappointed the Robot Devil is when Bender cuts off his song.
Yeah I cut off his song what’s it to ya
You should do an episode on ‘stench and stenchibility’ it’s another, touching, heartwarming episode that really tugs at the heartstrings, especially the ending. I think it was a good way to end Zoidbergs character, letting him find love, rather than him being crapped on by other characters as he usually is in the series.
That was an amazing episode, and I'm truly glad that the show lasted long enough to make it. It works so well mostly because, in-universe, everyone hate Zoidberg, but ask the fans and he's constantly near the top of the list of characters. _We_ needed that ending for him almost as much as he did.
I wish we would have gotten to see Zoidberg and Marianne together multiple times living together so we at least get some more content out of that sadly unexplored opportunity
Another good Zoidberg episode is the one where we learn of his shared past with the professor when they went Yeti hunting. It showed why the professor keeps Zoidberg around despite his incompetence and general low approval of everyone else. Their genuine comraderie was actually really touching and it showed us that Zoidberg isn't actually completely incompetent at his job (just when it regards humans).
It was...the perfect ending. The true finale, id argue, would be the entire last season as a whole. They tied all the loose ends up, gave us new perspectives for the main characters and then told us that it would all be okay. Even though the show is ending, we can always go around one more time...
To quote Bender B Rodriguez,
“Once More Unto the Breach, Meatbags.”
The ending to Overclockwise is retroactively even better because of Meanwhile, since we can now assume that the ending of Meanwhile was predicted by Bender and read by Fry and Leela, and that's what they're reacting to in that scene.
It's like the staff of the ducktales reboot said. Write each season like it's your last
And no it actually is. So awful
Gonna have to remake this apparently 😅
not gonna lie, some of the scenes made some tears for me now
When they first aired the final finale it ends with the same graphic that started the first episode. Then comedy central aired the first episode directly after it, so it seamlessly transitioned from the last to the first. It was a beautiful way to show that the story never ends.
Futurama did the time button way better, Bojack definetly should have won
View from halfway down is the one episode of any show I can genuinely say made me happy, have a panic attack, feel empty, and feel warm inside all in a single episode. Literally an emotional Rollercoaster
The view from halfway down is a masterpiece, it’s such a shame it lost to rick and morty, which didn’t have a bad episode by any means, but it wasn’t even close imo.
stop comparing 2 distinctively different shows.
@@ileachoffeverything6535 They’re being compared because they were against each other in the Emmys, which served to compare them. If it weren’t for that context then yeah, we shouldn’t be comparing them, however, R&M won it when, arguably, Bojack should have.
@@ileachoffeverything6535 If they weren't comparable would they have been fighting for the same award?
I absolutely agree that Devil's Hands is the best of the bunch just as an episode, but Meanwhile works the best as a finale. When it premiered I put off watching it because I was so emotionally attached to the show and didn't want to say goodbye. But when I did watch it, instead of being sad about it ending, it made me wanna watch the whole show again. It makes it feel like the show never really ends, just starts over again.
"Meanwhile" is honestly one of my favorite episode
The first finale has one of my favorite visual gags ever at 5:51 when the robot devil throws the flash and then you see him running off down the aisle. It's tons of little things like that in the show that made it so great.
"The Devil's Hands Are Idle Playthings", obviously.
It ends with an opera. How could it not be the best?
There's even surgery!
Fun fact when the final Futurama episode was released on TV it was immediately followed up by the first episode. Implying that they went back in time to the year 1999 when Fry got frozen.
Meanwhile is definitely my favorite finale, followed by The Devil's Hands. Into the Wild Green Yonder has a bit that I like. When Leela quits Planet Express to protest what the Wongs are doing and expects Fry not to support her, he says he trusts her because "you're you." It's a fantastic moment of growth for Fry, who's been pretty clumsy in understanding or supporting Leela's feelings in other episodes. And it makes a nice callback when Leela says the same to Fry at the end.
I absolutely love every “finale” so so so much. It gives every season so much more meaning and power to it so much it makes it hard to choose which one I like most
My takeaway from this is that Futurama is never really going to be over. This gives me hope that Netflix or Hulu could one day pick it back up.
Nah Hulu wouldn't renew it 😏
the thing I loved the most about the series finale is that after Fry says "Want to do it again?" and goes through the portal we get the blue screen that then segwayed into Comedy Central replaying the very first episode next. Brilliant move by Comedy Central
I think this show gets buried easier then it should be. We’ve all heard about how it was good that it ended when it did, or that it shouldn’t come back. But that only comes to mind because of how beautiful the end episode is, and how it have some closure. Sure the show had poor rating later on, but I have no doubts that if Futurama did come back, it would definitely deserve its place.
Futurama wasn’t going to end up like the Simpson’s the crew behind it had much more ideas, adventures and more developments to be had with new and old paths to be explored. The only reason I think this idea has stuck around because we’re so used to burying things we think are dead.
This show got guillotined unfairly, and I wish it would come back.
Honestly, I think Futurama had a great run! It came back from the dead 2 different times and ultimately ran for almost 14 years. I’m sure they could still make great TV, but a lot of the writers have moved on, many are on Disenchantment. As someone who was a fan from the beginning, I’m grateful for how many times I was gifted a Futurama resurrection haha
@@Johnny2Cellos I don't disagree. Im just sad and mad that it got the chopping bored so easy from fox, which set up the rest of the issues that surfaced.
I couldn't get past the whole "V-giny" thing in one of the post-DVD episodes. It's like it was written by drunken fratboys rather than Futurama writers. It wasn't just poor in its later seasons, it was abysmal.
What's even weirder was the occasionally did a fantastic episode, like "The Late Philip J. Fry".

Let Futurama earn it's retirement and ending, it ended beautifully!
No need to revive it, we don't want a stale repetitive hollow shell of it's former self like Simpsons, Spongebob and Family Guy
@@Johnlindsey289 Id honestly love another movie
The fact of the matter is that Futurama is brilliantly written. The characters are all unique, funny, and you end up loving nearly all of them. The ones you hate all make you laugh. Brilliant show, and one loved it since the very beginning.
I can still see Hypnotoad in my dreams
DO NOT BLAME THE HYPNOTOAD IT IS OF YOUR *OWN* VOLITION
The Devil’s Hands is hands down my favorite of the potential endings.
All of them are great episodes (and a movie), but my absolute favorite finale is the one that actually ended up being the finale, Meanwhile.
My favorite will always be the robot hands one because I watched it when it came out, and when the series got cancelled I pretty much made my peace with it being the end of Futurama. So it will always hold a place in my heart as the original ending of Futurama. I always got emotional watching those final seconds... Still do.
Didn't even realise Overclockedwise was a finale
I remember watching Meanwhile when it premiered and as soon as it ended they played the first episode right after. It really cemented the episode as the finale for me personally.
Just want to say holy cow does Ken Keeler have some writing. When seen as a series finale it feels like something we can be satisfied by the end, but when seen as a continuation leading to the actual series finale it is kind of mind blowing
These two regardless of everything they encountered to keep them apart belonged together.seeing them old and totally willing to begin their journey again is a beautiful thing indeed.this show was a love story that came to a satisfying conclusion.

Can you make a video about Scruffy? He became a fascinating character to me after seeing his relationship with Washbucket-Amy in the body switching episode.
Scruffy's just awesome
Yup
Also wonderful video as always man. The work that goes into these is so detailed and analytic. I freaking love it.
I think with devils hands it works as a great personal ending to fry and Leela’s story without them ever officially being together. It also feels more like an unsure of the future ending, like the crew is unsure they’ll get more episodes. Whereas Meanwhile gives the definitive ending to everything futurama had to offer with the science fiction aspect and the deep connected stories plus Leela and Fry are actually together and you get to see the relationship play out.
I'd put Devil's Hands at the top of both lists (Meanwhile's ending just doesn't give me the waterworks in the same way as Hands does) but I don't begrudge your ranking.
I loved that final season, every episode acted as an end cap for some aspect of the show
I don’t understand why UA-cam is recommending this two days late. This is important to me 💕😂
Best show ever. Ive watched it since the beginning and my gf and I still cry because of Fry and Leela. We named our son Brannigan, we have multiple pieces of art around our room of Futurama. I will always love this show.

Pumped for the upcoming 5th finale... This series is able to stay relevant by only coming back when they have more to say... The seasons, and their constituent episodes, all pop with minimal drag... Unlike Goering's other major television offering featuring those wonderful yellow folks in Springfield...
I discovered and watched this show because of you. Thank you !!!
Rewatching all your videos since they’re all masterpieces
I like how the implication of the first one is that fry can actually play the holophoner from his own skill and knowledge but it’s humanly impossible to play which is why he needs robotic hands to play it perfectly.
It really shows just how much he cares about her, he learns and then does the impossible
The best part of the final final is that it ends with Zoidberg in a happy relationship.
I just found your channel and I absolutely love it. God I love Futurama so much
The Late Phillip J Fry is my favorite episode. The forward time machine concept is on par with the time button. Leela, even after Fry supposedly dies, still loves him after finding out it was the professor's fault. The fact that Fry traveled an unfathomable amount of time, yet he was on time for the one thing that mattered that night. It was the perfect way to wrap up an emotional trip on the level of this episode. In the future we see Leela in, the trio are though to have died in a nuclear accident at a party. After realizing the truth, she returns to the Cavern, hoping that Fry may see it one day, no matter how far into the future he may be. The message left at the old Cavern shows what Leela truly thought about her relationship with Fry, the best years of her life. Fry was ready to travel to the end of the universe, knowing that Leela's best years were because of him. He was ready to live on at the end of the universe, as no matter how many years separated them, Fry and Leela loved each other. It's like the 4th movie in that both Fry and Leela have their own stories, with only a few connections that tie the plots together in the middle of the episode. It has the qualities of a futurama finale, yet was never meant to be one.
I just noticed a fun little reference of futurama based entirely around a character from disenchantment.
In the intro for "Into the Wild Green Yonder", at 6:31 you can see a neon light of a guy taking off his hat revealing a third eye. Which is same with Odval from Disenchantment, as Odval takes off his hat, it reveals of third eye.
I don't know if that's just a coincidence or a genius reference.
The last one where they decide to go back and do it all over again makes me feel nice.

Devils hands is the best episode out of them, but meanwhile is the perfect ending to the series.
People seem to be acting like the last finale returned the series to the start. It didn't. Unless the Professor thought of the button around the start of the series, which is unlikely to be the intention.
But after the episode aired they aired the pilot again, definitely making it seem like that was the intention. I think regardless of what they intended, it's fine to read it that way. It's a nice ending
@@Johnny2Cellos Fair point.

Honestly i felt some emptyness after the meanwhile, i haven't paid attention to the Professor explanations and i that the series wasn't ready to end. But i think that a 8th season would be disastrous to the series, Futurama was getting tired at the start and the end of the 6th season, so it did in the mid 7th season.
