I remember reading the comments back when Samsung released their new 2023 flagship TV model. Most of the comments were about Samsung not supporting DV like LG does and it's a "No DV it's a no buy for me". Netflix and DV put out an Interesting and educational literature for its consumers. DV on a high end TV at this moment only matters if you have pirated DV content instead of downloading the HDR10 version, because it won't play. If studios switch to grading for 4000 nits and TVs start to greatly exceed 1000 nits, then this will change. But for now, there is no need for dynamic tonemapping on a 1000 nits TV.

yeah, my research led me to think Dolby Vision was a deal breaker... ended up with 2 TVs I loath. (moved continents 2x, couldn't bring my tvs with me) Learned a lot trying new things.
like 240hz motion doesn't mean the display will work with anything above 60hz.
You need way more than 350nits to have bearable HDR experience. (I turn hdr off to play games)
VRR needs to be turned off otherwise I get tearing.
basically all the stickers on the box were to my detriment lol.
I'm not going to stray from the trusted brands again.

This is no surprise. DV presumably requires more data since it is scene by scene data rather than static data. It should be a no brainer it will require higher bitrate than HDR10 to look best.

If your tv brightness is above 1000 nits you honestly don't need to care. Dolby vision is great for tvs with low brightness / dynamic range since it dynamically tonemaps scenes or frames.

@@Michael.TalbotI agree to an extent, but DV is still available on high nit displays. DV still provides the best gamut mapping, tone mapping and encodes are typically better.
And as most of Hollywood prefers DV over HDR10, DV will continue to garner unwavered support. Disney is re-reeasing Avatar and Way if Water with new DV encodes(pysical and streaming). Aliens, The Abyss, and True Lies as well are all getting DV encodes on physical and streaming.
Wall-E through Criterion and Disney collab released a new version on disc with a all new DV encode.

@@TheCrucialQ Precisely.. I am not sure these graphs are telling the whole story! Dynamic metadata frame by frame will be better than static metadata for the whole scene. That is just a fact. Then why is there HDR10+ with dynamic metadata.

    • @Michael.Talbot
      @Michael.Talbot 6 місяців тому

@@TheCrucialQ Look DV at this point is just a licencing scam and the only reason why Sony added it to the A95L is because Sony and Dolby are both owned by the same people, now unless there has been a recent update the meta data is still broken. The A95L looks good because of the QD panel and Sony`s processing and not because of DV in fact it is holding the TV back because it is a standard.

If only they could have higher bitrates on streaming. Around 20 Mbps is really low. 80 Mbps at least would be good. But i get it that it would be expensive for the companies to implement that. But internet speeds are so high today and yet we don't utilize it.

Your TV also should have Gigabit Ethernet in order to take advantage of high bit rate content. Unfortunately, today’s TVs have 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet ports because that is what is built into today’s TV chipsets. At 80 Mbps raw data rates, adding required overhead like IP addresses so that routers know where to send the video pushes the required data rate for high bit rate content above Fast Ethernet’s 100 Mbps maximum speed. This means that you will have to cut your bit rate to fit Fast Ethernet or use Wi-Fi which means that you and your neighbors’ Wi-Fi networks can interfere with each other while you stream your high bit rate content, which can possibly get really bad if you live in an apartment with lots of close-by neighbors with their own Wi-Fi networks that will interfere with each other and your Wi-Fi network while your Wi-Fi network interferes with their Wi-Fi networks.

But I'm planning on moving to an bought apartment where 1000/1000 Mbit/s will be included. @@FHC1944I noticed that these TV sellers are selling tens of millions of televisions. The cost of a USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet controller and required 25 MHz crystal oscillator which supplies a 25 MHz clock signal is around $10 for the parts. If you already have a 25 MHz clock elsewhere, you can cut the cost to around $8 by reusing the clock. This also requires additional printed circuit board space, hardware engineering work, and software engineering work. If your chipset has PCIe, then you could use a PCIe to Gigabit Ethernet controller for $8. At those volumes, adding a Gigabit Ethernet controller and not raising the price to offset the costs means potentially missing on hundreds of millions of dollars in revenue.
As a consumer, I would happily pay $20 more and maybe more if needed for built-in Gigabit Ethernet in a flagship TV, especially since I live in an apartment since I move a lot due to my job, so I would like to avoid Wi-Fi interference with my neighbors’ Wi-Fi networks. Single family homeowners might not see much benefit from Gigabit Ethernet in TVs except when dealing with Wi-Fi dead spots since their Wi-Fi networks are unlikely to interfere with their neighbors’ Wi-Fi networks. Gigabit Ethernet makes no sense in low end TVs.
MediaTek is the third party TV SoC monopolist after allegedly using unfair antitrust law-violating tactics to drive Realtek out of the TV SoC market, and is being sued by Realtek for those alleged antitrust violations. MediaTek’s flagship TV SoCs include PCIe and USB 3.0 as expansion buses. Its more midrange chips only include USB 3.0 as an expansion bus. (Due to newer USB-IF rules and the revocation of the USB 3.0 standard, MediaTek can only get its newest products to be certified to various USB 3.x Gen 1 standards instead of USB 3.0, but they are functionally the same as USB 3.0.) Its lowest end chips only include USB 2.0 as an expansion bus. While USB 2.0 to Gigabit Ethernet controllers exist, they are limited to USB 2.0 speeds, but would be faster than Fast Ethernet controllers and are fast enough for today’s high bit rate 4K content. However, Gigabit Ethernet makes no sense for today’s low end TVs where every corner must be cut to break even or make a small profit on those. The only TV makers that I am aware of that don’t use MediaTek SoCs are Samsung and LG, who make their own SoCs.

About Dolby Vision vs HDR10... First, there is no clear video quality scale on the graphs, just "lower" to "higher", so there's no guarantee you can just overlay the two graphs to compare them. But even if we assume you can, the point of DV compared to HDR10 is tone mapping to the display capabilities when it's not capable of displaying the entire luminance range of the signal. Like you pointed out, the tests were made with an "ideal display" for the signal, thus eliminating the need for display mapping and making the comparison fair. The fact that DV requires higher bitrates because of its dynamic metadata, and so looks worse than HDR10 at the same bitrate is no surprise. Which is why Netflix optimization could be interesting to improve on that disadvantage while conserving the advantages of dynamic tone mapping metadata for contents that extend beyond the display capabilities. So the research didn't show that HDR10 looked better than DV as a whole, neither when the bitrate is not an issue nor when the display capabilities are limited anyway.

    • @chrisjfox8715

I think the whole point is that *because* the larger amount of data associated with DV is siphoning off bandwidth at lower bitrates, even a TV that would benefit the least from DV still suffers a perceived detriment when streamed at low bitrates. The more bandwidth siphoned then the worse *everything* about the signal suffers. The solution Netflix and Dolby provided is to compensate for that detriment such that it's no longer apparent, not necessarily to tone map a display that doesn't need it.
The ideal display having high luminance range likely intentionally serves as a means to ensure that there's no tone mapping affecting the solution, which can be seen as an algorithm intentionally masquerading as a gap fill of missing data. But key thing being that they're effectively protecting the integrity of the signal, not how effective Dolby Vision itself is or isn't at doing what it does.
That said, using ideal displays to develop it first makes sense to me for the reasons stated above...yet I would think that they would follow it up by then providing before and after test results on a variety of "non-ideal" TVs.

In a way it shows how small the QD-OLED market is for not just Samsung but also Sony. If the total "unit" (Panels from Samsung Display) was 890K. Well Samsung sold nearly 37 million TVs in a year.
That means their QDOLED sales amounts to less than 4% of their entire TV sales. Even less given that some of those 890K units went to Sony. So could be less than 3% of Samsung's sales.
So much for QD-OLED or OLED in general taking over the market like FOMO says, lol. Yet TCL and Hisense are LED and MiniLED and they are growing and 97% of Samsung sales are LED/MiniLED.
MiniLED has a more rapid evolution now and it's not going away.

I believe manufactures are starting to realize that they may not need dolby vision or dolby atmos. with google developing an open source atmos alternative, samsung working on their own atmos alternative and refusing to adopt dolby vision. it's just a matter of time before others start following suit. if netflix were to not continue using dolby vision that would be a major hit to dolby. there could be some revolt from the casuals and the hardcore from the home theater community, due to them having to potentially replace their audio equipment to work with the new standard 3d audio format.

The purchase of a 115 inch TV from China to USA is currently noticed on yuotube. At least three people werw necessary for assembly/montage. And the bigger the TV is, more pixels he has, more likely malfunctions are possible? And this 115 inch TV already has a dead pixel. More and more, calls for more errors? Or not? And power consumption? More nits, more power? Will this be not to much for us, regular consumers?

Technically, DV and HDR10+ are capable of going up to 12 bits per color channel, while plain HDR10 is limited to 10 bits per color channel. This could become more important with BT.2020 content that is not constrained to the DCI-P3 color space, where recent research shows that you need 11 bits per color channel to make neighboring colors indistinguishable to human eyes according to what I found on Wikipedia. For DCI-P3 content, 10 bits per color channel is enough. You can run DV and HDR10+ at 10 bits per color.
