I couldn’t agree more, FOMO. The reason OLEDs have such a small market share is high prices. The average consumer will spend $800 on an 85 inch basic LED rather than $1,400 on a 65 inch midrange OLED. I offered my sister a 43 inch Sony with 4K, HDR and Google TV but my neighbor was giving away an older 55 inch HD TV. Even though I explained the advantages of 4K HDR to my sis, she took the 55 inch instead. OLEDs need to get bigger and cheaper in order to grab a bigger market share. If LG, Samsung and Sony keep treating OLED as a premium product, they will keep loosing market share to TCL and Hisense while forcing TV enthusiasts to pay more. Sony has a new trick to improve MiniLEDs but we all know it will never surpass OLED. The thing is, the average consumer does not care-they want bigger and cheaper.

I thought when Samsung entered the market with QD-OLED prices of all OLED would come down as they are not just competing with each other’s OLED but also losing LCD market share. For some reason they don’t seem to care and are staying the course while in LG’s case losing money. Meanwhile LG Display doesn’t use all of their OLED manufacturing in order to keep prices high.

I think if OLED's cross the line and push full 12 bit color as an exclusive it is OVER. But they have to commit. Your sis would bite as women in general notice color even more.

I@@XVa-uj8m there’s so much good stuff they’re willing to add their TVs as long as there’s a market for it-they won’t invest in new tech just to compete, they need to sell units. Sony is improving its LED tech to grab a bigger chunk of the growing LED TV market. It’s up to LG and Samsung to keep improving OLED efficiency till it reaches 4,000 nits, then there’s nothing left for OLED as a future tech. The next big push is for MicroLED-that’s where LG, Samsung, Apple and Sony are investing.

While I believe large TVs are where sales will be going forward, I disagree that premium LED TVs are going to drive this. I work PT selling TVs on the weekends, and I see a ton of low and mid-tier 75 and 85 inch TVs go out the door. Note, I consider Sony X90L or Samsung Q80C and similarly priced TVs (TCL QM8, Hisense U8K) to be the top of the mid-tier. In other words, the LED TVs that are priced similarly to OLEDs aren't part of that.
I understand that anecdote is not data, but a number of my colleagues see the same thing. Most customers are buying LED TVs because they are not as expensive. When you show a customer a demo on an OLED, and then on a Full-Array TV they don't think the picture difference is worth $1000 (for 75 inch) or $2000-$3000 (for 85/85 inch).

The problems for me with Vision Pro are: you have to wear a device, you have to have a device for everyone in the family if you want to watch together, it's going to feel like you're watching TV alone even when you're with everyone, difficult communicating with another person.
Bought the Sony A95L along with klipsch speakers and a new sony 7.2 AV receiver and the Panasonic UB820 so I just started buying 4K Blu Rays and really like the extra resolution. Just bought Gladiator and The Fifth Element. Looking forward to expanding my 4K collection.

Big OLED displays are way to expensive
65" costs ~1000€ good price for the size and the better PQ compared to LCD
77" costs >2000€ (40% bigger than 65" by area but costs 100% more) -> good price would be 1500-1800€
83" costs >3000€ (20% bigger than 77" by area but costs 50% more) -> good price would be 2000-2200€
For me to consider the bigger sizes the price would need to be at the lower end of the range but I think consumers would also accept the upper estimates but not really more as for the current price of a 77" or 83" OLED we can get a 98" TCL and the immersive *SIZE beats PQ* advantage of OLED
EDIT: just checked more premium TVs and the OLEDs compete well against Samsung, Sony & Philips premium LCDs at current prices but would need my "good prices" to compete with TCL that just provides incredible value and is definitely above the "good enough" threshold for consumers to care more about size and price than PQ

I currently have a plasma, WOLED, QDOLED and mini led tvs. Agree with your industry and consumer analysis. I think we are seeing the Hisense/TCL impact where for some of us consumers who are not videophiles, close enough in tech is completely fine if I can get a much larger screen. Inmho, manufacturers got caught up in the "perfect panel tech" chase where qdoled and the newer LG woled's live however mini led tech is still improving at a much lower cost allowing for affordable larger sizes. I am ok with a minimal amount of blooming and other minor issues if it means I can get a 98" that performs 90% of a 65/77" oled. Most consumers are looking for entertainment watching the shows not the black bars.

Fomo great episode! Samsung is not sold in Japan where I live. When I consider support Sony is the best option. I live in a 800 square foot apartment, and only one location for a TV, and 65 inch is the maximum size for the wall. I own near 2000 DVDs, and plan on upgrading to 4K. I have no subscriptions. I used AFN satellite TV, and Japanese broadcasting up to 4K. I have a 6.2.6 Sony sound system so I opted for the A95L, and I love the TV. Oh in Japan we can still rent DVD and Blu-ray like Blockbuster. The library also has DVD and Blu-ray to check out. We just watched 23 studio Ghibli movies. I went with the Hisense because I wanted a size upgrade within my budget and I knew I was getting a better picture than my 6 year old Qled. That is what kept me from going to OLED a few years ago, along with watching Sony LED and OLED side by side, yes the OLED was sightly better but not over a $1000 worth of better either. IMHO More affordable 27"-40" OLED TV/Monitors for PC and Console Gamers is a huge untapped market with pent up demand. Get em addicted to the small ones, folks will buy the big ones.

Adding WOLED to its Samsung product line will ONLY confuse consumers even more. Again, it goes to show that they don't really care about anything else other than money and profits. Amazon Prime video isn't all that great in general so not missing out on too much here. UHD4k Bluray players are too expensive for what they offer, and consumers have more options with digital content, so it's not a big surprise to expect loss of sales there. Apple Vision Pro's first version is ... just that, a first R&D version that they are making everyone pay; wait for the 2nd or 3rd version. I think the future is going to be a mix of both. I know for myself, I can only stand wearing a headset/goggles for a short period of time. Then, I prefer my sound system immersion and just my baseball cap on :)

If Samsung is betting on sales of TV's above 75" for their 2024 revenue targets they are already in very serious trouble. Sure, those TV's in that size make the headlines, but that's not where the VOLUME is. You know, the volume of sales that it takes for a company to actually hit their annual revenue targets? All you have to do is walk into any electronics store and watch what sizes of TVs actually go out the door each day. It's the 55", 65" and 75" models that make up the overwhelming majority of sales today. Sure, some 85" and 98" units go out the door too, but only a VERY small fraction the weeks sales volume is made up of those. Most stores might sell one 85" TV every four days, if that. They might sell one 98" TV every month. If Samsung thinks they are going to make their annual numbers on sizes above 75" in 2024 then they have already missed the mark. I don't care how much you discount those super-large screens, most customer simply do not have the room to put one of those in their house. And, even if they did, the woman of the house would very likely put her foot down and say, "Oh, HELL no! Not in MY house!"

I think the king of sports TVs this year will be Samsung 8K with their new motion AI and their 8K upscaling and MiniLED brightness. It likely will look really good watching NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA and so on. Because sports don't have any extreme contrast differences it's one APL and one "scene" with a lot of back and forth motion. So crystal clear image and excellent motion and bright image is absolute king in watching sports.
Other than that simple a giant TV is also great for watching sports.

OLED is at the point where getting any brighter rapidly increases the chance of burn in. LCD’s can keep adding more and more dimming zones and maintain higher brightness, making it still a great choice for dark rooms

its business man, these companies need to survive. you look at tcl and hisense and they are doing just fine selling "ok" large format LCD displays and making a profit. Like fomo said the 5 year deal with samsung and LG is to try and grow the oled brand. The hope of this is to grow the oled brand and make cheaper oleds more common to the average consumer. All in all you can make bigger cheaper and good looking LCD TV's that the avg consumer will buy...think about it sell a 85" or 98" lcd tv for $2000 or $3000 or a 65" and 77" oled for $1500 or $3000

Why have "good enough" image quality. I really don't like that type of thinking. That is like saying we don't need more CPU or GPU performance either or anything.
Progress in tech needs to always go forward.
Yes more nits does matter. 4,000 nits is only twice as bright as 1,000 nits. Also these 4,000 nits TVs are not really 4,000 nits. At D65 they drop quite a lot also these are still OLED so they cannot sustain high nits if the panel starts to heat up. Heat is the OLED killer.
Which is why Sony and I think even Samsung now have temp measurements in real time inside the panel and they use that for how to best operate it and when they ABL it etc.
The G4 is interesting but I don't think I will ever go with OLED. I don't like the drawbacks. I want IN-organic "O"LED.
MiniLED isn't perfect, but it's getting darn close to rivalling OLED even on it's own "turf" so to speak. Outside of that it's already better.

The economy is mediocre and paying 2k plus for an oled makes no sense when you can pay 500-1000 and get a nice big qled that looks great from hisense or tcl amongst others. I had planned on buying a new tv for the living room this year but money is tighter than usual and our q85a still looks fantastic. With streaming being such a shit show and being clamped down on so hard, whilst it's not making the companies as much money as they like, I'm not surprised selling 4K discs should be a valid option.
Sometimes they're greed gets the better of them, when just giving people something they can use works for everybody.
Vision Pro is great from a UI standpoint and it has great hardware, but you can get similar functionality for about a third the cost. I've been using VR headsets since the HMZT one theater on your face in 2011. It's amazing for cross talk free 3-D movies, but the Vision Pro has the same problems as all Apple devices do, namely being locked down

I’ll probably cancel it like I did HBO max. HBO isn’t worth 19.99 a month. I’ll get it again when house of the dragon season 2 comes out. These streaming companies are getting greedy and the best thing we can do is cancel our subscription when they want to charge more for less.

15% increase of 4k Disc sales in an overall shrinking physical media market is not very much. 4k for sure is the new milking cow. Oppenheimer 4k disc (bundle) is 25 Euros, Blu-ray is 16 Euros. Prices up. "Collectors" are a special kind of breed.. They buy editions and often dont even open them. If these are the new target customers it is for sure over with mass market blu-rays..

Samsung would really mess up if in the S90D they will have a panel lottery with lets say 55,65,77 of whether you get QD or WOLED panel. That would be an unmitigated disaster since they have huge discrepancy in performance.
Technically they should just do QDOLED in S95D series and WOLED in S90D series across the board. Simplicity and a clear performance difference. Same thing Sony does.

I think people are starting to realize how much OLED has convinced them to invest in a product that was plasma based, based meaning it was never meant to be improved on a vast level like standard LCD/LED was, and still is the average consumer is not worried about size. The average consumer is to read about how to invest their money properly in a technology that will not be limited in the next 3 to 4 years, this has happened before, with the first generation of Blu-ray, look like a weird floppy disc, Betamax, and so on, and so forth plasma TVs. They were hot for about a minute pun intended, I think OLED is about to be phased out as I have been predicting for the past 6 to 7 years, look at the example Sony is showing, Hollywood producers need a TV that can stab handle HDR at 1000 to 2000 nits at full field, not for 3 to 2 seconds as all lead tech does. It complicates the HDR reference when a TV cannot sustain the brightness, it needs, mini LED is the future, Sony will make sure of that, not a big fan of them but at least they’re waking up to the idea that OLED tech maybe only for the niche

I don't know, FOMO. It seems like any tech that requires people to wear something is doomed. 3D at home was so good at the end of its lifetime with lightweight, passive 3D glasses on an OLED screen, and the format still died. Not enough people will adopt VR or AR headsets, no matter how good, cheap, and lightweight Apple or other companies make it. I don't mind if I am eating my words in a few years, but at this time, I think it would be foolish to ignore history, and recent history at that. (3D was still being pushed hard less than 10 years ago!)

Dude obsessed with size much?? And the sentence you cherry picked the 75” or larger segment out of also contains the words QLED and OLED all part of the same message as they are separated by commas and the word “and” within the same sentence. I don’t disagree that you should buy the largest but also most practical TV for your own use case. Just having a 100-115” tv available doesn’t automatically make it the right choice though. I refuse to keep up with the Jone’s just for the sake of keeping up with the Jone’s. But then a couple weeks ago it was “4000 nits, 4000 nits, 4000 nits”, now it’s “bigger, bigger, bigger” . Always something new to FOMO about 😂😂

    @marcosvictor4935 4 місяці тому

Altough I do agree mostly with your point, I really think OLED users are more widespread than they seem and according to your points, that comes mostly because I don't agree streaming isn't a usecade that benefits from OLED. Not at all, in fact I know it most definitely does! Honestly I consider myself very critical of quality and people in my life comain about that because I'm always complaining about things not being as good as I think they should or messing with settings and installing new things to make what we already have look, sound or just work better. But I'm absolutely perfectly happy with streaming quality on most streaming platforms. I mean UA-cam is pretty bad but mostly I'm watching content creators with bright images all the time so the bitrates isn't usually a problem but really any movies and TV shows platforms have absolutely fine bitrates over streaming on TVs. I would only make a point against streaming from PCs that does indeed show compression artifacts on dark scenes but on TV apps it's absolutely fine. And TV shows and movies tend to have a Lot of dark scenes where the OLED benefit shines through, so people that like to watch series would be OLED consumers if they both new about the advantages and it was in their price range.

You asked our tv habits. Yea 4K Blu-ray’s are INCREDIBLE but!!…. Even when streaming it’s still a better picture on an OLED. Are you saying only buy OLED if your a Blu-ray fanatic otherwise it makes no difference at all??? That’s a really stupid statement and doesn’t help the OLED argument at all. Which makes me wonder, do you want to see OLED fail??? Also WAY easier to dim an OLED at night and still have the best picture. Dimmer screens at night boost melatonin levels. Which over years of NIGHTIME exposure can either increase or decrease your life based off measuring your true biological age.

  • @D8099.

You say drop price by dropping MLA, fine but can you please explain to use why they cannot compete with size for size??? What is it that’s makes it so hard to create bigger oleds? There’s no backlight so it’s already half the energy of led. And they have infinite contrast. I’ve been watching your videos and everyone else’s for years and have yet to hear an explanation why a 98 inch OLED is 30,000$. What are the profit margins on that tv? Most of us assume LGs taking home 60% profit margins and laughing all the way to the bank. That’s how our heads justify saying hell no although all of us would love to have that tv. But 30,000$ might as well be the 100,000$ microled. Especially on a budget. I was within 5,000 of my budget with my car and mortgage of being able to actually spend 25K for that tv and I tried and tried to rearrange the budget so I could take out anouther loan. Just wasn’t possible.
