  • Here is how you can safely refill the small propane bottle and how to fully fill the bottle. Not just halfway or freeze your bottle. Straight up fully filled.
    Note: When I say air it means propane vapor.
    The purging of the bottle release the pressure so the liquid can enter easily.

    You can get a full charge by burping the small bottles with a punch or drill bit for 4-5 seconds. do it with the bottle upright, depress the valve inside the threaded nipple, then fill again with the large tank. DO THIS OUTSIDE WITH NO IGNITION SOURCES NEARBY🔥, DO NOT MESS WITH THE VALVE ON THE BOTTLE ITSELF, it's a safety blow off valve that works opposite of the main valve. only do it 2 times, and weigh the bottle. it should be between 15-16 oz net, if its a little over, bleed it down with your punch.
    I use these 1lb bottles with a big buddy propane furnace, and it's nice to get a full bottle run without having to get out of a nice warm sleeping bag :o)

    This is essentially the way I fill my LP lift truck tank every morning at work. Only there it is on a much bigger scale, of course. Never had any issues filling in this method. Am able to get through an 8 hour shift without running out of gas. The LP tank on the lift has an actual valve you can hand-tighten and close when you start seeing the white vapors coming out of the safety valve. Then you know you're full. No scale required. So I personally say this is no more dangerous of method than any other. If you are in a vented area and away from a flame source, that's the main thing. There's a risk involved when filling these in having an accident just as much as filling the gas tank on your car. You should always use caution when doing either.

      Ya but you never have issues of breathing it in by accident based on the fact you never know when its going to shoot out the top the propane tank? And your always expelling a little to the air but again thats probably so minor that home hvac system probably expel more CO over a year then you doing this method. I once checked a small propane tank and got it spray up at me a little not on to my face or anything but it was a close call (out side but wind was blowing so may have breathed in a few fumes. Stupidly I had the valve stem perpendicular to my face at the time i pressed the valve down to check it (Not realizing the speed at which compressed cold can propane tanks shoot out even though it was mostly empty).... But learned quickly from it how to more properly check it by pointing it away from you and pressing down ...either way your still releasing some fumes and propane smells around you which is not good... for bigger tanks i imagine you just stand farther back and detach when you see the first signs.

      @sam111880 5 років тому

      Also thanks for replies i have one additional question is the valve stems that you can take out of the small propane tanks the same kind as tire or ac valve stems. Because i like to replace them if possible. Anyway i have an old propane small tank i want to uses as a crucible for melting metals so i had to research how to remove these valves to fill the tank with water so i could cut it in half.. This tank is not savable anyway but in general your filling method is super convenient for plumbing , wax sculpture making , portable grill camping ,,...etc.

    Transferring propane from one container to another is possible only when there is a difference in pressure in the 2 containers. The only way to safely transfer propane from the large tank to the smal tank is having the big tank at a warm temperature and the smaller tank at a lower temperature. For example, putting the small tank in the freezer at 25F will bring the vapour pressure of the propane down to 44 PSIG. Putting the 20# tank in hot summer air at, say, 90F will bring its vapour pressure to 150 PSIG.
    It is this difference in pressure which allows the propane to flow. The best and safest way is to just connect the 2 tanks together and not fool around with the main valve or the relief valve on the small tank. If you get only 3/4 Lbs in the small tank, so be it!

    • @Howie875
      @Howie875 8 місяців тому +1

      As an AC tech with a lot of experience with condensable gases, I disagree that is the only way. With non heated or chilled tanks, as soon as you hook the two bottles together soon both containers will equalize in pressure. However, liquid is denser than gas so if the empty bottle with gas is held down low, while the full one with liquid is held up high (inverted), gravity will transfer the liquid from the higher container to the lower while the gas will rise to the upper container. As an example of this, it would be the same thing as hooking two containers filled with water, one full and one nearly empty at atmospheric pressures. The water in the full upper container will drain to the lower partially full container and the air will rise to the upper container because pressure is equalized but the liquid is denser. Used to transfer refrigerant from one cylinder to another on job sites (before they put in non-refill fittings) and it worked great, with no heating or chilling needed.

      Because a scale will tell you that you a 1 lb refill. If you dont you're just guessing and you dont want to guess with gas, to dangerous. If the fluid is coming out the valve it maybe overfilled. A quick rough calculation puts the level close to 90% by volume. If he had a scale we would could compare weight vs volume. Way safer...

      Some places fill by weight, others by ambient temperature. The warmer ambient air is, the more propane can be added to the tank. Filling any propane tank, be it a big rig , a 20lb tank or a one pound can is properly filled by a chart using ambient air temp. Since the one pound bottles are sold everywhere in all temperatures, they are filled as if it very cold .(outside) that way if the ambient air warms up to say 100 degrees , the propane will expand and not engage the safety valve releasing propane . (Safety built in the amount the bottle is filled)

  • @sdharding7483
    @sdharding7483 3 роки тому +14

    By loosening (unscrewing) the relief valve to vent the 1 lb tank, you just changed the pressure that the safety relief valve will open. The pressure that the relief valve opens is set by the tension on the spring in the valve. The spring tension (and relief pressure) is adjusted by the amount the Schrader valve is screwed into the tank. Take the valve out of an empty tank and see how it works. Once you mess with the relief valve setting, the tank may either prematurely vent, releasing propane and potentially causing a fire, or prevent the tank from venting causing the tank explode.

    Safest way I've seen on UA-cam yet, but he has indeed overfilled it. Be sure to dump the excess weight before the tank warms up, cos a tank completely full of liquid will try to expand hydraulically when it warms...boom! You always need around 20% propane vapour in there at the top cos vapour WILL handle heating-up without fracturing the tank. Rick a professional rocket scientist.

    You should first weight the completely empty 1lb propane bottle with hose attached and tare out weight, then read weight again after filling propane bottle for an accurate 1lb propane only weight with hose still attached, a slight amount left in hose will add about 1/2 oz more than inside bottle.
    As you already know filling to exactly 1lb will leave a small void inside bottle as a safety prevention if hot weather causes propane liquid to expand inside and that safety valve you unthreaded is rated to release at 250 psi at 125F. (Propane is 110 psi at 70F and 177 psi at 100F)

    Just trying to completely understand the concept of how these tanks completely work.. The bigger ones have the safety on one valve like grill tanks have a float that raise so you cann't put in more propane over a desired pressure ... but the small tanks uses a car tire valve remover tool and schrader valves. It seems to be the same size as AC valves , and tire valves... but again not completely sure on this. So thanks for any extra explanation. Also schrader valve for propane tanks are they the same as schrader valve for car systems or do you get them at a special plumbing/gas supply store ?

    You don't have to worry about pressure or over pressurizing a container while filling it. If that problem occurs it will occur later. It is very important to weigh your tanks to make sure they are not over 80% capacity. A condensable gas like propane can expand and contract with temperatures and this can actually change the amount of gas cushion in the tank. Gas is compressible but liquid is not. If you overfill a container on a cold day, then later on a hot summer day the liquid may expand until no gas cushion remains, then an event called hydrostatic pressure occurs. This will induce a force of thousands of pounds and will rupture the container.

      Dennis S Agreed. The tank is designed to hold 1 lb of propane fuel. The tank's weight should be monitored as it is being re-fueled so it does not get over-filled. Over-filling the tank with extra propane makes it dangerous to explosion. The liquid propane needs room in the tank to expand and contract due to temperature changes.

    I like your method so far the best. But there is one thing you left out or i was unclear on. Why is relieving the second pressure valve stem necessary isn't it going to just let out propane into the air as you fill the small tank ? Because as i understand it, the second valve safety stem is if the propane tank builds up to much pressure for some ridiculous reason it will open to let out some propane gas so the tank doesn't become so pressurized it explodes. Normally this would never be an issue. But again if you didn't relieve the valve a little i would imagine you just not beable to fill your small tank up completely without some type of pump pushing more in???

  • @richardpharo2556
    @richardpharo2556 4 роки тому

    Propane Takes 177 psi Pressure to keep it liquefied. Since you do not have a compressor to compress the propane and the liquid itself remains under pressure and will keep it self liquefied as long as you keep it in closed. I don’t think it’s possible to pass the 177 pounds per square inch and less it was under extreme heat or you have a compressor to compress it into a small compartment

    Sorry to tell you but once fluid is coming out in the vertical position as you had it it’s way overfilled. You don’t mention a scale at all and that’s the only way to actually put the correct amount of propane in this tank. You really shouldn’t mess with the valve at all because you don’t need to. Put the bottle in the freezer for an hour and it’ll fill the 1 pound without messing with the valve or anything. Messing with the valve introduces all sorts of additional risks that are unnecessary. The hose idea is nice but again that tank you filled is overfilled and you have no idea because you didn’t use a scale. Thanks for sharing.

      Bill, that's not the biggest problem. Without enough space for the LP to expand into a gas, the pressure will be too high. Gas will then leak into wherever this is being stored and create an explosion potential. This guy has NO BUSINESS telling people to do this dangerous refill and then call it "safe" on top of it. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

      Lorinda Star - this isn’t the right way to do the refilling in my opinion but don’t be under the impression that a spark makes the entire disposable tank blow up in your face because it doesn’t. There’s no oxygen in the tank itself so the only thing a spark would do at the valve is maybe have a small poof. The main concern is not over filling the tank and only putting 80% propane liquid in it. You have to do that with a scale which he doesn’t mention at all

      It was leaking from the hose. You saw him release the remaining propane at the end from the hose by turning open the valve. Like a garden hose with a nozzle at the tip. If you close the nozzle at the end of the hose, there is still pressured water in the the hose. You turn off the water at the spigot ,then you release the water in the hose by opening the nozzle.

    No head space. Propane needs room for expansion. Never fill a propane bottle without proper room for expansion. Never fill a bottle past its rated value. Filling bottle and leaving no head space could cause the bottle to rupture and or explode when temperatures rise and the weather heats up.

      Wrong, his tank and all my one pounders have a safety pressure relief valve that like the name implies, is a safety relief valve. Regardless best and safetss not to overfill relying on safety device and if it relives its pressure in an enclosed space like your car trunk risks explosion.
      Though if your.. hmm.. smart you never store compressed Gas inside anything like your garage, house, trunk, back seat of a car.

    • @PitSmoke

      @@airgliderz Okay, the same thing. You explained it your way and I explained it my way. Heat causes expansion which causes the valve to relieve psi if it reaches that point which is compressed gas which is flammable and can ignite. I use 1lb bottles too. I use a scale. I make sure my empty bottles have no psi and are empty. I weight the bottle, tare the scale and put no more than 1lb into the bottle. THIS IS FOR SAFETY. I would NEVER fill a bottle without leaving headspace (room for expansion). SAFETY FIRST.

    When you go to a professional place to get them filled, the propane is kept pressurized so it's a liquid that is pumping into the container. When you try to do this yourself, as you let some flow into the second container there is less pressure in the system, this lets some of the liquid propane boil off into a gas. Then the gas is taking up part of the space in the container which is much less dense than liquid. So by venting it, your letting the less dense gas out and if you act fast enough, you hopefully get more liquid into it before it expands again and fills that space. So you're wasting a ton of product and will literally never be able to correctly refill this way. A (constantly) pressurized source tank is key to it working as intended. This is not only foolishly dangerous, but super wasteful. Every time to vent that container, you're just wasting money.

    • @daviddarby3738
      @daviddarby3738 4 роки тому

      A short venting super cools the liquid which drops the pressure down immediately allowing more liquid in. Very little waste.

    Please, good people, do NOT mess with those needle relief valves to vent gas. They can leak and may if messed with. Those green tanks are not designed to be refilled. DOT says the walls are too thin to be refilled. I think it's so they can be thrown away so one has to buy new ones at 5, 6, or more bucks each. They can be refilled if one doesn't go over 70 or 75 % of full. A full tank should weigh less than 28 or 29 ounces. The store ones weigh 1 pound 14.4 ounces, so you know they can stand a full 16. And the DOT has made it illegal to fill them and carry them off your property. Yeah, bureaucracy at its best. So, all you outlaws out there, just switch on your brain and BE FRIGGIN' CAREFUL with this stuff -- it can blow you up and burn your house down.
